Meet FVA Grantee "AYUDA"!
AYUDA, a nonprofit that helps El Paso area veterans with home repairs and modifications, was awared a $100,000 Fund for Veterans' Assistance grant this year. This grant will enable disabled veterans and their family members to stay in their homes. Do you know of a nonprofit anywhere in Texas, that could use grant money to help the veterans they serve? Breast Cancer Support Group
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, learn what you can about screening, diagnosis and treatment. Support groups are there for patients and survivors to meet and share their experiences. Virtual support groups allow individuals to share from wherever they are. Dianna Petrick, of the Breast Cancer Resource Center talks with, Sharron Stewart, Texas Veterans Commission Women Veterans Coordinator for South Texas about the support group offered by the Breast Cancer Resource Center. Women veterans, active duty and family members who have been diagnosed with breast cancer are invited to join the monthly support meetings, the second Tuesday of the month at seven pm. Register here.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month October 2022
Spreading the word about Breast Cancer; early detection, treatment and support is what this month is all about. The National Breast Council Foundation has a theme, RISE! "This year we RISE to ensure every woman has access to the screenings she needs and the support she deserves. When we RISE, we Rally in Screening Everyone." Texas Veterans Commission talked with two veterans who are also Breast Cancer Survivors. We discuss their diagnosis, treatment and their advice for others about early detection.

The PACT Act: Texas Veterans Commission is Ready to File your Claim
Veterans from the Vietnam War era to post 9-11 rejoiced when the PACT Act was signed into law. The PACT Act expands VA health care and benefits for veterans exposed to burn pits and other toxic substances, including Agent Orange and radiation. Since so many veterans are affected it would be wise to start your disability claim now. Mike Jaeger, our Southwest District Claims Manager has good advice for veterans and survivors about this new law, and how it affects previously denied claims and new ones too. New Law for DV Plates and Disabled Parking: How Not to Get a Ticket
A new Texas law is affecting motorists with Texas Disabled Veteran (DV) license plates. You now need to display the ISA symbol to use parking spots marked for the disabled. What is that? You may ask. Today we wrap up our 'Meet the Commissioner' series with a chat with Laura Koerner, Chairwoman of the Texas Veterans Commission. Previously we talked with Vice Chairman Kevin Barber, Commissioner Kimberlee Shaneyfelt, Secretary and Commissioners Mary Lopez Dale and Mike Hernandez. Appointed by the Texas Governor, these five people are dedicated to helping Texas veterans, their families and survivors. The Blue Water Navy (BWN) Vietnam Veterans Act
The Blue Water Navy (BWN) Vietnam Veterans Act of 2019 extended the presumption of herbicide exposure, such as Agent Orange, to Veterans who served in the offshore waters of the Republic of Vietnam between Jan. 9, 1962 and May 7, 1975. If that exposure led to any of the 14 VA approved service connected illnesses, these veterans are entitled to benefits. The VA has already paid out hundreds of millions of dollars to some of those veterans. We talked with the VA about this benefit and what eligible veterans should do to claim their share. Vietnam War Veterans Day 2021
On March 29, 2021, the nation will recognize and show appreciation for the military men and women who served during the Vietnam War. Over 2.7 million Americans served in Vietnam, less than 850,000 are alive today. We continue to give Texas Vietnam Vets a book that commemorates the 50th anniversary of that war. Vietnam Vet and former Texas Veterans Commission Chairman Al Cantu shares his feelings about the book and we'll also discuss why Vietnam Vets should file disability claims for exposure to Agent Orange.
