TCP Ep 56: Confronting America's Most Prolific Serial Killer with Jillian Lauren

TCP Ep 56: Confronting America's Most Prolific Serial Killer with Jillian Lauren

Tonight, I’m talking about serial killer Samuel Little with Jillian Lauren, author of “Behold the Monster: Confronting America's Most Prolific Serial Killer.”

Jillian Lauren

Jillian Lauren is a writer, storyteller, adoption advocate, rock-wife, and lousy kickboxer. She is the New York Times bestselling author of the memoirs EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED, and SOME GIRLS: My Life in a Harem, and the novel PRETTY. SOME GIRLS, which recounts her time spent in the harem of the Prince of Brunei, has been translated into eighteen languages.

She was the only journalist to extensively interview Samuel Little, the most prolific serial killer in American history. This experience is chronicled in Joe Berlinger’s hit STARZ documentary series, CONFRONTING A SERIAL KILLER, and in Michael Connelly’s podcast MURDER BOOK: The Women Who Brought Down Samuel Little. Her book BEHOLD THE MONSTER: Confronting a Killer is forthcoming.

Jillian has an MFA in Creative Writing from Antioch University. Her writing has appeared in New York Magazine, The New York Times, Vanity Fair, The Paris Review, The Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Magazine, Elle, Flaunt Magazine, The Daily Beast, Salon, and many others. Her work has been widely anthologized, including in The Moth Anthology, and True Tales of Lust and Love.

Jillian is a regular storyteller with The Moth and performs at spoken word and storytelling events across the country. She did a Tedx talk about adoption and identity at Chapman University in 2014. She has been interviewed on The View, Good Morning America and Howard Stern, to name a few.

Jillian is married to Weezer bass player Scott Shriner. They live in Los Angeles with their two sons.

Behold the Monster

Jillian Lauren had no idea what she was getting into when she wrote her first letter to prolific serial killer Samuel Little. All she knew was her research had led her to believe he was good for far more murders than the three for which he had been convicted. While the two exchanged dozens of letters and embarked on hundreds of hours of interviews, Lauren gained the trust of a monster. After maintaining his innocence for decades, Little confessed to the murders of ninety-three women, often drawing his victims in haunting detail as he spoke. How could one man evade justice, manipulating the system for over four decades?

As the FBI, the DOJ, the LAPD, and countless law enforcement officials across the country worked to connect their cold cases with the confessions, Lauren's coverage of the investigations and obsession with Little's victims only escalated.

New York Times bestselling author and lead of the Starz docuseries Confronting a Serial Killer Jillian Lauren delivers the harrowing report of her unusual relationship with a psychopath. But this is more than a deep dive into the actions of Samuel Little. Lauren's riveting and emotional accounts reveal the women who were lost to cold files, giving Little's victims a chance to have their stories heard for the first time.

TCP Ep 55: Missing Persons in our National Parks with Andrea Lankford

TCP Ep 55: Missing Persons in our National Parks with Andrea Lankford

Tonight, I’m talking about missing persons in our national forests with Andrea Lankford, former National Park Service Ranger and author of “Trail of the Lost: The Relentless Search to Bring Home the Missing Hikers of the Pacific Crest Trail.”
Andrea Lankford
Andrea Lankford is the author of Ranger Confidential: Living, Working and Dying in the National Park, a National Geographic "Top Ten Book About U.S. Parks,” and three trail guides. During her twelve-year career as a law enforcement ranger with the National Park Service, Andrea won several awards for her criminal investigations. After leaving the ranger ranks, the accomplished outdoorswoman thru-hiked the entire Appalachian Trail, kayaked from Miami to Key West, and was the first, with Beth Overton, to mountain bike the 800-mile Arizona Trail. Andrea is now a registered nurse living in Northern California.
Trail of the Lost: The Relentless Search to Bring Home the Missing Hikers of the Pacific Crest Trail
As a park ranger with the National Park Service's law enforcement team, Andrea Lankford led search and rescue missions in some of the most beautiful (and dangerous) landscapes across America, from Yosemite to the Grand Canyon. But though she had the support of the agency, Andrea grew frustrated with the service's bureaucratic idiosyncrasies, and left the force after twelve years. Two decades later, however, she stumbles across a mystery that pulls her right back where she left off: three young men have vanished from the Pacific Crest Trail, the 2,650-mile trek made famous by Cheryl Strayed's Wild, and no one has been able to find them. It’s bugging the hell out of her.

Andrea’s concern soon leads her to a wild environment unlike any she’s ever encountered: missing person Facebook groups. Andrea launches an investigation, joining forces with an eclectic team of amateurs who are determined to solve the cases by land and by screen: a mother of the missing, a retired pharmacy manager, and a mapmaker who monitors terrorist activity for the government. Together, they track the activities of kidnappers and murderers, investigate a cult, rescue a psychic in peril, cross paths with an unconventional scientist, and reunite an international fugitive with his family. Searching for the missing is a brutal psychological and physical test with the highest stakes, but eventually their hardships begin to bear strange fruits—ones that lead them to places and people they never saw coming.

Shadow Sanction

‘Brining war back to the war on drugs’

Lance Bear Wolf and his black-budget Shadow Tier operators must stop the rebirth of The French Connection and its terror funding connection to the Taliban. By any means necessary.

When the resurgent Sinaloa cartel attacks Wolf and his wife, Elle Parker, on the Crow Indian reservation, the safety of his people becomes Job One—until the president of the United States orders Shadow Tier to stop the Taliban’s opium trade. The president’s underlying message: The drug war is a failure. Fix this now, or your black funding disappears.

Torn between saving his people and the president’s demands for direct action, Wolf sends Shadow Tier’s Bravo Squadron to Afghanistan to infiltrate the Taliban drug organization. He sends Kieran Kennedy, his executive officer, to stand up and train a new international Charlie Squadron in the U.K. While Wolf bends the rules to protect the reservation on the home front, the squadrons track opium with a mysterious United Nations connection out of Afghanistan to a new “French Connection” in Marseilles, France.

The teams identify a likely distribution hub and its leadership. But going deeper will take initiative and innovation. Kennedy takes the dangerous decision to operate in the open … as a drug cartel. The operation yields results, but there is a piece missing. Parker and Kennedy believe a government contractor providing logistics flights into and out of the war zones is involved.

Plans are made by the fake cartel for a large shipment of heroin to go to the mafia in New York City, where wholesale arrests will be made if all goes as planned. As the data pours in from three continents, the heroin network unfolds and things to do not go as planned. The takedown of a multi-national drug production, shipment, and sales operation is unlike any operation Shadow Tier has attempted.

For the president, it’s a no-fail mission or his administration is doomed. For Shadow Tier, it’s time to bring the war back into the war on drugs.

TCP Ep 51: Margaret Press, Founder of the DNADOE Project

TCP Ep 51: Margaret Press, Founder of the DNADOE Project

Tonight, I’m talking to Margaret Press founder of the DNADOE Project.

To answer her burning question “How can investigative genetic genealogy help identify John and Jane Does?” Margaret Press co-founded the DNA Doe Project in 2017 with Forensic Genealogist Dr. Colleen Fitzpatrick. After months of work hunting down labs, experts, bones and donations, they tackled their first case in September 2017 and incorporated as a non-profit the following month. The subsequent success provided the answer: persistence, patience, and a team of skilled and spirited volunteers. That’s how it’s done.

Margaret grew up in Los Angeles, California where at age 15 she inherited a passion for genealogy from her grandmother. While working most of her life in software development, Margaret also fell into mystery writing. Two published novels set in Salem, Massachusetts were followed by essays and short stories, and a true crime book based on a 1991 murder in her own neighborhood.

When DNA testing redefined the genealogy landscape, Margaret joined the impassioned group of citizen scientists who would propel this new field to where it is today.

Margaret is a proud parent and grandparent, with descendants of her own to carry her mitochondrial haplogroup C1d and passion for genealogy down her family tree.

The DNA Doe Project was founded in 2017 as a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation with a simple humanitarian mission: to identify John and Jane Does using investigative genetic genealogy. On March 5, 2018, they solved their first case – Robert Ivan Nichols, the John Doe previously known as Joseph Newton Chandler III. On April 11, 2018, DNADOE joined local authorities at a press conference in Troy, Ohio to identify the young woman known as ‘Buckskin Girl’ as Marcia L. King – the first time in history that the world learned of the power of investigative genetic genealogy to solve cold case identifications.

To date they have solved a total of 212 cases.

TCP Ep 50: The Delphi Murders with Author and Host of True Crime Garage Nic Edwards

TCP Ep 50: The Delphi Murders with Author and Host of True Crime Garage Nic Edwards

Tonight, I’m talking to author and host of the wildly popular “True Crime Garage” podcast Nic Edwards about his new book:

The Delphi Murders: The Quest to Find ‘The Man on the Bridge’

On February 13, 2017, two Indiana teenagers, Abigail Williams, 13, and Liberty German, 14, went for a walk in the woods near the abandoned Monon High Bridge.

They never returned home.

Their bodies were discovered on Valentine's Day morning, sparking a torrent of news coverage and social media speculation that engrossed the attention of people around the world.

A grainy photo of the suspected killer walking across the bridge and a chilling cellphone recording of his voice saying "down the hill" captured the public's attention. Numerous possible suspects were brought to the attention of the authorities but dismissed, leaving everyone wondering who could have committed such a heinous crime.

Author Nic Edwards, host of the True Crime Garage podcast, was fascinated by the case and for years conducted his own extensive research and commentary. As such he was able to dissect the investigation that included an extensive list of possible suspects, such as a hatchet-wielding lunatic, a kidnapper with unusual tattoos, a murderous pastor, a rapist, and a father and son catfishing team.

Then in late October 2022, local pharmacy technician Richard Allen was charged with the murders. His arrest raised multiple questions about how he was able to evade law enforcement for so long and what motivated him to commit such a horrific crime.

In The Delphi Murders: The Quest To Find ‘The Man on the Bridge’, Edwards and his best-selling coauthor Brian Whitney (You Have a Very Soft Voice, Susan) provide a detailed account of the investigation from the day the girls’ bodies were found to the events leading up to Allen's arrest, and unique insight into the minds of the killer and those who worked tirelessly to bring him to justice.

He’s the author of To Hell I Must Go (2015) and A Slayer Waits (2017), and, Killing Women, which was the backstory for the True Crime Network documentaries I Survived a Serial Killer, and Making a Serial Killer. Tonight, we're going to talk about his newest book:

Grim Paradise: The Cold Case Search for the Mackinac Island Killer

When widow Frances Lacey was murdered in July 1960 on Mackinac Island, only a few meager clues were found by police, and the case soon turned cold. But more than sixty years later, will those same clues finally solve the mystery?

On July 24, 1960, the quaint charm and serenity of Mackinac, nestled between Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas, was shattered by Lacey’s brutal death. Despite a massive manhunt and thousands of pages of police reports, her killer was never caught.

Now, in GRIM PARADISE, true crime author Rod Sadler (Killing Women) delves into the secrets of one of Michigan's most perplexing murder cases. Offering an in-depth and suspenseful account of the long-standing mystery, he poses the question:

The Last of the Seven: A Novel of World War II

A spellbinding novel of World War II based on the little-known history of the X Troop—a team of European Jews who escaped the Continent only to join the British Army and return home to exact their revenge on Hitler’s military.

A lone soldier wearing a German uniform stumbles into a British military camp in the North African desert with an incredible story to tell. He is the only survivor of an undercover operation meant to infiltrate a Nazi base, trading on the soldiers’ perfect fluency in German. However, this man is not British-born but instead a German Jew seeking revenge for the deaths of his family back home in Berlin.

As the Allies advance into Europe, the young lieutenant is brought to recover in Sicily. There he is recruited by a British major to join the newly formed X Troop, a commando unit composed of German and Austrian Jews training for a top secret mission at a nearby camp in the Sicilian hills. They are all “lost boys,” driven not by patriotism but by vengeance.

In Washington, DC, Supreme Court Justice Charlotte Morehouse prepares for a trip to Alaska, unaware that a killer is waiting to take his revenge—by livestreaming her death to the world.

In Anchorage, Alaska, Deputy US Marshals Arliss Cutter and Lola Teariki are assigned to security detail at a judicial conference in Fairbanks. Lola is tasked with guarding Justice Townsend’s teenaged daughter while Cutter provides counter-surveillance. It’s a simple, routine assignment—until the mother and daughter decide to explore the Alaskan wilderness on the famous Glacier Discovery train. Hiding onboard are the Chechen terrorists, who launch a surprise attack. While they seize control of the engine, Cutter manages to escape with Justice Townsend by jumping off the moving train—and into the unforgiving wilderness.

With no supplies and no connection to the outside world, Cutter and the judge must cross a treacherous terrain to stay alive. Two of the terrorists are close behind. The others are on the train with the judge’s daughter—and they plan to execute her on camera. With so many lives at stake, Cutter knows there are only two options left: catch the train and kill them all . . . or all will be killed.

TCP Ep 45: Author and Podcast Host Jeff Clark

TCP Ep 45: Author and Podcast Host Jeff Clark

Hey everybody, tonight I’m talking to Author and Podcaster Jeff Clark

Jeff Clark is an author, and decorated leader having spent over 12 years on active duty in the Air Force and has continued his service with the military as a civilian ever since. His nearly 20-year career has seen him lead teams in logistics, operations, readiness & plans, business, and special programs for the US Air Force and US Space Force.

He’s worked with the US Army, US Navy, and US Space Force for joint ventures, including the standup of Space Operations Command, and multiple engagements for Operations Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and US Army NORTHCOM.

In his debut book, Hear These Truths, Clark outlines the crucial steps readers should take to design their own philosophy, or what he calls their algorithm, to rule the workplace and understand their leadership mission, vision, and goals.

"Approaching leadership without a strategy will bury you and slow your progress," said Clark, a coach, and mentor with certifications in Lean Six Sigma, technical training, and executive leadership. "The way an algorithm - a rule set for success - guides the content of a website, your school of thought on leading must do the same. It's the 'call to action.'"

Clark draws upon his experiences as an entrepreneur, as a retired Air Force logistician serving during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, and as a government civil service employee to lay out a clear plan for readers to win in the workplace.

This plan covers: defining leadership; distinguishing between power and purpose; being a servant leader; making smart decisions with confidence; becoming empowered and empowering others; effectively communicating and listening; and, accountability and its importance for leaders and teams.

In addition to his writing Jeff hosts the Course of Action podcast where he discusses military and spy thrillers and veteran issues.

Jeff lives in Oklahoma with his wife and three children, his oldest currently serving on active duty in the Air Force.

TCP Ep 43: Author Richard Maverick and the Our War Series

Hey everybody, tonight I’m talking to thriller author Richard Maverick about his Our War Series.

Our War (Losers Book One):

Imagine a small county where an hour's drive takes you from rural Amish country covered with grape vineyards through once-proud small towns now rampant with crime ending in an impoverished Native American Reservation. Imagine the plight of the law-abiding residents of the small towns suffering through having to pay for a metropolis 450 miles away as well as political tyrants failed policies. Imagine safe neighborhoods once full of beautiful, well-maintained homes becoming dilapidated ganglands. Imagine your children moving away to greener pastures and their places taken by thugs and druggies. Imagine the despair as the local economy dies while being smothered by astronomical taxes and unemployment as businesses fail or leave. Imagine having your Police vilified and defunded. Imagine trying to live your life the right way with morals and honor in a failing society. Imagine moving away from the failing towns to escape the crime and the smoldering ashes of a not so civil war being stirred to life. Imagine an unknown entity fanning those ashes into a raging fire, and your town, your county, your state, and your nation is at war with itself. Imagine being caught in the midst of unspeakable violence while just trying to get home to your family. Imagine having realized that something like this was coming, having prepared for it, despite being treated like a "loser" by the politically correct culture that caused this. Imagine leading a small band of like-minded armed patriots protecting friends and family in the face of daunting odds as the violence spreads to the rural areas. Imagine organizing a small community to be able to survive a harsh lake effect snow-filled winter while fending off marauding gangs. Inside these pages, you won't have to imagine.

TCP Ep 42: John Wesley Anderson and the Jon Benet Ramsey Case

TCP Ep 42: John Wesley Anderson and the Jon Benet Ramsey Case

It is good to be back. I had to take a break from the podcast so I could finish up edits on Ty Benhoff two. I also wanted to change some stuff around on the podcast so thank you for your patience.

Getting right back into it though, tonight I’m talking to John Wesley Anderson about his new book Lou and Jon Benet, an outstanding story about Homicide Detective Lou Smit, and his quest to find Jon Benet Ramsey’s killer.

John Wesley Anderson, MBA, is a published author, storyteller, and TEDx speaker. He enjoyed a 30-year law enforcement career and was twice elected Sheriff for El Paso County, Colorado (1995-2003). Prior to serving as Sheriff, John was employed with the Colorado Springs Police Department and retired at the rank of sergeant (1972-1995). After being term-limited as Sheriff, in 2003, John went to work for the Lockheed Martin Corporation, where he focused on corporate and homeland security initiatives and advanced technology development. In 2012, he retired from the corporate world to launch a consulting company, JW Anderson & Associates, LTD., allowing him the freedom to pursue his passion for writing, history and the arts. Although John has traveled around the world, including several adventures on a catamaran sailing the Caribbean, three corporate security assignments into a combat zone on the Horn of Africa, and landing on an aircraft carrier at sea in the Pacific Ocean, he remains most fascinated by the rich history and art discovered in his own backyard in the American Southwest.

John and a team comprised of retired detectives and the Smit family continue the hunt for Jon Benet’s killer. Please consider donating to their GoFundMe at: https://www.gofundme.com/f/JonBenet-Lou-Smits-family-searches-for-justice.

About Lou and Jon Benet.

On Christmas Night 1996, six-year-old JonBenet Ramsey was murdered in her family’s home in Boulder, Colorado. A ransom note was found in the home, but it was hours before her father, John, found her body in the basement. She had been strangled with a garrote and her skull was fractured.

The media sensationalized the tragic death of the “child beauty queen” and public speculation and rumors ran rampant. What followed was one of the most notorious unsolved murder investigations in American history.

Boulder police fixated on JonBenet’s parents as suspects. Needing investigative help, the Boulder DA brought in legendary homicide detective Lou Smit. However, he was soon disenchanted with law enforcement’s obsession with the Ramsey family as the primary suspects, excluding other possibilities.

Smit resigned but continued to work on his own time, and at his own expense, determined to find justice for JonBenet. He determined the Ramsey family was not involved in her death but died in 2010 before he could identify the killer.

Thousands of people attended his funeral service, including John Ramsey, and the detective’s lifelong friend and colleague, John Anderson. Along with a handful of retired detectives, Anderson and Smit’s family continue to pursue justice based on Smit’s work.

Now, for the first time in LOU AND JONBENET, Anderson tells the story of Smit’s investigation and why the Smit family team now believes that the killer can be identified.

Here we go everybody this is the TCP and I am John Stamp, with me is the ageless Tiger-dog who is asleep at my feet. I think he had a big night last night. Or he didn’t get enough out of his 4 naps today. Either way, he was out before we got started.

TCP Ep 34: Interview with Iowa State Auditor and true crime author Rob Sand

TCP Ep 34: Interview with Iowa State Auditor and true crime author Rob Sand

Hey, everybody, this is the TCP, and I am John Stamp.
First off did you guys see the artwork Jeff Hayes at Plasmafire graphics worked up for Wraith of Sheltermount. Wraith was my experiment in writing a fantasy novel. From the start, Wraith was going to be an indie title. I wanted to do the whole thing myself, so I hired the editor, and did the cover myself. I thought I did pretty good on the cover and it tested well but when I started working with Jeff to upgrade the covers on my other titles, I knew I had to do Wraith. And I was right, he knocked it out of the park. I’ll include it in the show notes. I already put it up on the socials.
Second, continuing my wholehearted thanks for your support for Brother’s Keeper, just released on Audible. Thank you for all the comments and compliments you’ve sent. I want to know what you want to hear next, Where Angels Sing, Spoilers #2, Wraith of Sheltermount, or Shattered Circle. Leave a comment.
Last, Wild Blue Press still has Blood Red Ivory on sale for $2.99. If you haven’t read one of my novels yet, Blood Red Ivory is a great place to start.
Tonight, I’m talking to Rob Sands,
Iowa’s current State Auditor and true crime author. As Iowa’s chief public corruption prosecutor, Rob uncovered the largest lottery rigging scheme in American history and detailed the case in his book, The Winning Ticket: Uncovering America's Biggest Lottery Scam. Both a story of small-town America and a true-crime saga about the largest lottery-rigging scheme in American history, The Winning Ticket follows the investigation all the way down the rabbit hole to uncover how one man was able to cheat the system, winning jackpots over $16 million. He went more than a decade without being caught—until Rob inherited the case.
The Winning Ticket is an inside look at one of the most complicated yet seat-of-your-pants financial investigations and prosecutions in recent history. Just as remarkable as the crime are the real-life characters met along the way: an honest fireworks salesman, a hoodwinked FBI agent, a crooked Texas lawman, a shady attorney representing a Belizean trust, and, yes, Bigfoot hunters.
That’s correct, I said Bigfoot hunters.
This was a fun interview.

TCP 31: Former Marine, Author, Podcaster Stan R. Mitchell

Not gonna lie I was a bit rusty on the production side of the house this week but, we are back on That’s Criminal with John Stamp!
I hope you guys had as much fun as I did over the holiday. December was a blur. Took the wee babes to the Big Island of Hawaii, and just like I did the first time I went there long ago, Red Five and the Big Guy did not want to come back. Three out of the four of us were all in favor of putting up a tent on the beach and never leaving. Thankfully, the brains of the outfit, the lovely wife Erica, talked us back to the mainland.
So, I’m back, had enough fun last year that I decided to talk to a bunch more really interesting people. I got a pretty great line up both in true crime and fiction coming up so I hope you continue to enjoy the show. I do have an announcement though; the boys picked a new logo. It’ll be in the show notes. And the new cover for the podcast starting next week.
Also, before we get into it, big thanks to all of you who have downloaded Brother’s Keeper on Audible. So far Alex and Charlie have been really well received. And, like he did with Spoilers, Chas Mandala nailed it with the narration. We both appreciate the support.
Alright, one more thing, don’t forget, like, subscribe, and rate the TCP and I send you a free ebook. DM me on IG @thatscriminalpodcast or email, john@johnstampwriter.com, and I’ll send you either Brother’s Keeper, Shattered Circle, or Wraith of Sheltermount.

TCP Ep 40: Interview with Author Steve Stratton

TCP Ep 40: Interview with Author Steve Stratton

Hey everybody this is the TCP and I am John Stamp, Tiger-dog has ditched me tonight. It is really nice out and he is laying outside under a tree.
Only one announcement tonight. Ty Benhoff 2 is a wrap. I’m thinking of a couple tentative titles, the one I’m
leaning on right now is Overmatch. Don’t know, the hardest part of this whole writing thing is A: coming up with a title and B reducing 100,000 words to a blurb on the back cover. It’s a work in progress, and now I’m editing, which is not my favorite part, but the big lift is over. Hopefully Overmatch, or
whatever I end up calling the second Ty Benhoff novel is heading your way before fall. We’ll see.
Oh, and like I kind of hinted at over time, Billy West did in fact steal the show from Ty. She turned out to be pretty awesome, a good contrast to Ty. She might need her own book at some point. At the least I need to figure out how to make her a recurring character. I’ll figure it out.
Anyway, continued thanks for the reviews and comments of not only That’s Criminal but the books as well. And yes I have gotten the message that many of you would like to see Alex and Charlie from Brother’s Keeper back, and yes I’ve been working on it. I just haven’t nailed down the right plot yet. A sequel to Brother’s Keeper isn’t a no. It’s a, to be determined at this point. Stay tuned.
Alright.
Tonight, I get to talk to Steve Stratton, Author of Shadow Tier, A Lance Bear Wolf Thriller
Steve Stratton is a veteran of the United States Army and former member of the Secret Service. He started his military career at the White House
Communications Agency supporting the needs of Presidents Ford and Carter, Vice Presidents Rockefeller and Mondale and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. His work took him around the world introducing him to new cultures, ways of thinking, and the various agencies tasked with projecting and protecting American interests abroad. The jump to the US Secret Service was an easy transition but after several years and an election campaign, Steve left for the commercial sector.
Steve was awarded his Green Beret in 1986. From the 80’s through 2000 he deployed with 20th Special Forces on counter-drug and training missions
in the SOUTHCOM region. His civilian contractor time includes support for USCENTCOM, USSOCOM, and several intelligence agencies. Today he develops cyber security products that support the warfighter and intelligence community. When he is not working, you can find him mountain biking, trout fishing, or hunting in Colorado.

Especially those first few episodes, Frank Stanfield, and Robyn Maharaj. You guys were really patient with the rookie host. In 2023 I’ll probably add a little more fiction in the mix. Speaking of, If you guys have any authors you want to hear from, pass them on, either DM me or email me at john@johnstampwriter.com. I’ll reach out and see if I can get them. I’ve got a tentative roster already planned, but there’s always room for more right. So, let me know who you want me to talk to and I’ll make it happen.

I also want to thank the other hosts who have been so supportive, helping me get the TCP off the ground. Emily Webb, Jason Piccolo, Lee Clemens, John Kozma, Patrick Faulkner, Pat O’Donnell, CJ Lopez, Scott Kafka, Ryan Permison. Hope I’m not missing anyone. Each of these folks helped get me off the ground with either technical advice, business advice, or tips for hosting this thing. Thank you, guys, I really appreciate it.

Finally, I mentioned this before but Brother’s Keeper is on its way to audible. Chas Mandala and I were so happy with the way Spoilers turned out, we decided to collaborate on bringing Alex and Charlie to the spoken word.

Coming early 2023.

Happy holidays everybody, and stay safe, and if you are still looking for the perfect gift for your book junkie, I have seven ideas for you. Check me out on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, wherever books are sold.

Big thanks to Crush Limbo for the music.

TCP Ep. 28 Marla Bernard, Author of By the Side of the Road: The True Story of the Kidnapping, Rape, and Murder of Ann Harrison

TCP Ep. 28 Marla Bernard, Author of By the Side of the Road: The True Story of the Kidnapping, Rape, and Murder of Ann Harrison

Tonight I get to talk to Marla Bernard, Author of By the Side of the Road: The True Story of the Kidnapping, Rape, and Murder of Ann Harrison. Marla is a passionate victim’s rights advocate, author, and public speaker. She is also a retired Police Sergeant, instructor, and contributor to national law enforcement publications. She was recently filmed for an upcoming true crime series in the United Kingdom for an episode based on her first book, Through the Rain.

About By the Side of the Road:

In the early hours of March 22, 1989, two friends – career criminals with violent felony convictions - drove around the eastern Kansas City area in a stolen car committing a series of crimes. The weather was mild for late March in Kansas City; the sky was clear, and there was the pale remnant of a Full Moon that bore the dubious name of Death Moon, the last full moon of winter.

A little before 7 a.m., 15-year-old Ann Harrison walked to the end of her driveway on Kansas City’s east side to wait for the bus to take her to Raytown South High School. Ten minutes later, she disappeared but no one saw what happened. As if waiting for her return, her belongings were still stacked carefully by the side of the road.

BY THE SIDE OF THE ROAD is the true crime story of the kidnapping, rape, and murder of Ann Harrison and the long journey forced upon her family who had to wait nearly three decades to see her killers brought to final justice.

You can find Marla at her website: www.scarlettinkwell.com

Also, gotta give a big thanks to Jen and Cheri, and Cassidy at Books at the Beach. Had a great time this weekend. Thank you to all of you who took a minute to tell me how much you're enjoying That’s Criminal and the books.

Tonight I'm excited to talk, again, to bestselling author of The Last Jewish Gangster trilogy David Larson.

Last time we talked to David we covered the early years of Michael Hardy. The god son of Bugsy Seigel, the son of one of the most prolific female associates of Murder Inc. Hardy’s life is like a modern day western. An almost mythical adventure through the invisible world of the mob and criminal underground. To summarize, Hardy is ignored by his mom, and has Gangsters for role models. Hardy just decides one day he was taking on that life. He was going to be a gangster. Robberies, heists, the drug trade, and other rackets right up to when he and mom get nabbed in Mexico facilitating a stolen car ring.

Hardy takes the wrap and does Mom’s time in one of the most notorious prisons in the world. La Mesa, The Devils Table, in Tijuana Mexico.

Today we’re going to talk about The middle years, volume two of the Last Jewish Gangster series.

Book two picks up with Hardy, now going under the alias of Richard Mandel being booked into La Mesa prison and it bounces from there to New York, Israel, California. Just like book one Michael Hardy’s story is like watching a Tarantino movie.

As always thank you for your continued support for Blood Red Ivory, available in e-book, paperback, and audiobook everywhere.

TCP Ep. 21 Bestselling Crime Writer Frank Zafiro

TCP Ep. 21 Bestselling Crime Writer Frank Zafiro

REMINDER: FREE EBOOK!

As a way of saying thank you for helping me get the TCP off the ground, anyone who likes subscribes, and rates the TCP gets a free e-book. Hit me up by   DM on IG @thatscriminalpodcast or email, john@johnstampwriter.com, and I’ll send you one of my titles either Brother’s Keeper, Shattered Circle, or Wraith of Sheltermount.

I'm excited to talk to bestselling author of multiple crime series, novellas, and short stories and Host of the Wrong Place, Write Crime Podcast Frank Zafiro.

Frank served in the U.S. Army from 1986-91 in Military Intelligence as a Czechoslovak linguist. In 1993, he became a police officer in Spokane, Washington. During his career, he worked as a patrol officer, corporal, and detective before entering into leadership roles, becoming a sergeant in 2002. He was fortunate enough to command patrol officers, investigators, K-9 officers (and their dogs!), and the SWAT team. He also commanded both the patrol division and investigative division of the police department at different points in his career.

Frank retired from law enforcement in 2013 as a captain to write full time and teach in both the Criminal Justice and Writing fields.

Frank primarily writes gritty crime fiction from both sides of the badge. This includes his River City series (an ensemble cast of police officers) and his SpoCompton series (a rotating cast of criminals). His storytelling creed is that the good guys usually win… but not always, and never without a cost.

He has two recent releases:

The Ride-Along (a police procedural in the Charlie-316 series) puts a police reform activist and a police officer in the same patrol car for a ten-hour graveyard shift. Sparks fly, ideas get argued, but these two good people also listen to each other…

All That This Life Requires is the second Jack McCrae Mystery. Jack “Mac” McCrae is a retired police officer. In this book, Mac’s mentor and hero has died. The man’s son comes to Mac with a letter that seems to confess to a vague misdeed. Mac must discover what it was, and upon discovering it, decide if justice was truly served.
