For this episode of The Alchemical Mind, I will be diving into Carl Jung's Seven Sermons To The Dead and discuss how this deeply Gnostic modern work helped lead Jung to his important revelations on the theory of mind and how psychology has been deeply influenced by the ideas of archetypes, shadows, and magic present in ancient traditions. Eastern Influence On The Christian Mystical Tradition And Knowing Through Unknowing
On this episode of The Alchemical Mind, I take a look at the Eastern influence on early Christian thought, and the similarities between mystical experience and the recognition of the divine and the self. We will take a look at the Kena Upanishad along with some of the writings of Pseudo-Dionysius The Aeropagite to make connections between these two traditions, and how the neti neti method - or agnosia as Pseudo-Dionysius called it - can be used to understand who we really are. Reality Isn't A Mystery
For this episode of The Alchemical Mind, I depart a bit from our recent discussion of Gnostic Christianity to dive into one of my favorite quotes, and one I use all the time, from Sufi mystic Ibn Ata Allah al-Iskandari - "the real is not veiled from you, rather it is you who are veiled from seeing it." Through this quote and the passage from which it is derived, I analyse the mystical experience, understanding how to acquire truth, and what ultimately prevents us from "getting it" - ourselves. This episode was originally supposed to be the first in the Symbology 101 series, but after a recent discussion, I decided to push it back until next week. Why that is, you'll just have to listen to the episode, but it does lead nicely into what we are discussing and that is listener stories! On this episode of The Alchemical Mind, I share a poem and a mystical experience by two amazing listeners which leads us into discussing critical thinking, mental health, fear-mongering, discovering truth, and so much more. Tribalism And Critical Thinking
On today's episode of The Alchemical Mind, I take a look at tribalism. Why do we create tribes, what are their purpose, and how can we be members of a tribe while maintaining critical thinking skills and not relegating our authority to them. While not necessary, it may be worthwhile listening to the previous episode, Understanding Open-Mindedness And The Quest For Truth, in order to grasp some of the points of this discussion. Understanding Open-Mindedness And The Quest For Truth
For this episode of The Alchemical mind, we dive into some practical theory with a look at open-mindedness. What is open-mindedness and why is it a prerequisite in order to properly analyze evidence and understand truth? This is a key episode in our understanding of some upcoming topics including understanding tribalism, memetics and mind viruses, cult psychology, fear, and more. Even if you believe yourself to be an open-minded person, this episode may have you rethinking whether you are truly open-minded or not. The Divine Feminine, Mystery Traditions, And The Exegesis Of The Soul
It's time to go deep down the rabbit hole on this episode of The Alchemical Mind as we look at the importance of the divine feminine within mystery traditions as we continue our exploration of Gnosticism with a look at The Exegesis Of The Soul. Through this text, and accompanying readings from Magdalene Mysteries: The Left Hand Path Of The Feminine Christ, we'll explore the importance of the feminine aspect of the divine through traditions stemming from John The Baptist to Simon Magus and why this forms the core of the teachings of various mystery schools through antiquity, the middle ages, and into modern times. This is an important milestone for the podcast as we start to break down modern misconceptions of language and symbolism, which will play a key role for the show moving forward. The Valentinians And The Gospel Of Philip
For this episode of The Alchemical Mind, we switch gears from the dark cosmology of the Sethians to the Gospel of Phillip and the Valentinians. Valentinus was educated in Alexandria and set up his school in Rome and was largely influential in early Christianity by introducing the original concept of a triune god. Apparently through his discontent of not becoming bishop of Rome, Valentinus set up his school with a curiously non-dual view of the nature of god that was deeply influenced by the Platonists, Hermeticists, and Eastern ideology. In The Gospel Of Philip, we learn about the Valentinian view of the nature of god, the sacraments, the divinity of Christ, the creation of the world, and most importantly, the importance of words and symbols and their interpretations. The Secret Book Of John, Part 2
As  we continue our deep dive into Gnosticism, I take a look at The Secret  Book Of John. This is part two of a multipart series on this important  Sethian text, as we look at the intricate Gnostic cosmology. On this episode, we'll go into how the universe was created according to the Sethians, what the nature of god is, how physical reality came to be, why there is an "evil" god in their cosmology, and how humanity can return to the Pleroma (or the fullness) of the one true god through the cultivation of our innate inner spark. This is a fantastic piece of the Gnostic puzzle, but be sure to listen to part 1 before diving in. Terrence McKenna On The Gnostics and Early Christianity
Before we dive into part 2 of The Secret Book of John and dive deep into Gnostic cosmology, I wanted to bring you a bit of commentary on Gnosticism and the early Christians from none other than audience favorite, Terrence McKenna. In the first part of this episode, McKenna talks about the influence of Rome on the development of early Christianity and how Eastern ideas, as well as various Western mystery schools influenced the development of Gnostic and Christian thought. In the latter half, McKenna of course dives into the sacred mushroom and how psychedelics have influenced mystery schools throughout history, all interspersed with a little commentary from yours truly. How To Find Out What Is True, Part 2
On this episode of The Alchemical Mind, it's time to look at some of the practical applications of finding gnosis as I take a look at how we can determine what is and isn't true. This is not some esoteric view of finding some sort of "ultimate Truth," but rather some simple things we can do to analyze information and weed out false information. In part 2 of this series, we begin by discussing the story about the fiery dragon in the garage from Carl Sagan's The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark before diving into some of the philosophical fallacies to watch out for when analysis information to be true. I conclude the episode with a fantastic bit from George Carlin on weasel words that wraps the discussion up nicely. If you missed part 1, you can listen to it here. The Secret Book Of John, Part 1
As we continue our deep dive into Gnosticism, I take a look at The Secret Book Of John. This is part one of a multipart series on this important Sethian text, as we look at the intricate Gnostic cosmology. The Secret Book Of John is key to understanding how the Gnostics view the idea of god (hint: it's very non-dual), what man's place in the universe is, and how the world was created by an evil, ignorant god known as Yaldaboath, Saklas, or simply as the demiurge, which leads into a discussion of the similarities between Gnostic ideas and those that we see among the Hermeticists, Platonist, Pythagoreans, and more. Alan Watts On Gnosis And Dogma
I took the day off from recording, but that doesn't mean you won't be getting a new episode of The Alchemical Mind! For this special episode, I bring you a great speech by Alan Watts on the early Christian thought, the importance of gnosis in the early church, and its similarities to similar ideas from Buddhism and Hindu traditions. Then, Watts ties it all together in a nice little bow by discussing how true gnosis and dogma are not necessarily mutually exclusive, even though they may appear to be and why the pursuit of spiritual truth does not need to be tied to ritualistic boredom. The Gospel Of Thomas
The Gospel of Thomas is a fascinating text from early in Christian history and one of the most accessible texts from the group that is generally dubbed as the Gnostics. On this episode of The Alchemical Mind, I begin an exploration of Christian Gnostic thought with a book that has fascinated me for many years. The Gospel of Thomas is unique from many other sacred texts in that it is simple a book of sayings - 114 to be exact. Let's dive into just who the Gnostics were (or weren't), what it means to be a Gnostic, the group's relationship with Hermeticism, and the influence of Buddhist ideas on early Christianity. The Hermetica and Mystery Traditions
Welcome back to another episode of The Alchemical Mind. This episode is part four of my deep dive into The Hermetica and since this text has inspired so much of Western esoteric thought, what better way to wrap this discussion up than by talking about mystery schools. What are mystery schools? What does Hermes have to say about the mysteries? Should knowledge be kept hidden? I'll dive into all this and more, as well as a brief reading from Manly P. Hall's The Secret Teachings Of All Ages to try to get a grasp on the subject. If you haven't subscribed yet, be sure to do so on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Terrence McKenna On Magic and The Hermetic Tradition
This episode of The Alchemical Mind serves partially as a departure from our discussion on The Hermetica, but also as an added bonus with additional information on the influence of this work and the traditions it is based on on Western theology and philosophy. I'm sure many of you know Terrence McKenna from his work with psychedelics, but he was also deeply knowledgeable in theology and philosophy, so for this episode, I bring you a speech from McKenna on the hermetic tradition, magic, and mysticism.  I will return on Monday with the final part of our discussion of The Hermetica as I dive into a discussion of mystery schools in preparation for what will serve as a basis for much of podcast for the month of September.  If you haven't subscribed yet, be sure to do so on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to The Alchemical Mind. This episode is part two of a three part deep dive into The Hermetica, one of the most powerful and influential sacred texts of all times. Its origins are a bit of a mystery, but its influence on Western philosophy, science, alchemy and religion are without question, even being partially responsible for launching the Renaissance in Europe. For part one, I dove into the creation and nature of god and the universe according to the text. On the next episode, I will be discussing the results of my solo meditation retreat so I hope you are looking forward to listening to that, as much as I am about sharing my experiences. Embracing The Shadow Self
Welcome to The Alchemical Mind. In part two of our series on the shadow self, I will be discussing how to embrace the shadow self through some simple exercises you can do at home and at your own pace. Shadow work is not easy, nor is it recommended if you do not understand the basics of personal development. I kick this episode off with some basic guidelines on how to do this type of work, but if you do not understand, go back and listen to previous episodes, or do some research on your own time. Then, I dive into three exercises of varying complexity that will help you integrate the hidden aspects of yourself. Understanding The Shadow Self
On this episode of The Alchemical Mind, i dive deep into understanding the shadow self. Just what is the shadow self? How is it formed? What is its purpose? How can we learn to integrate it into our conscious selves to become better, more complete people? This is part one of two parts in understanding the shadow self. In part two, I'll go over some exercises into how we can learn to integrate the shadow selves in preparation for an episode next week in which I'll finally share an amazing mystical experience. Introduction To Hemi-Sync
For this episode of The Alchemical Mind, I dive a little bit into the history of hemi-sync.  First developed in the 1950s by Robert Monroe as he experimented with sleep-learning, hemi-sync has been used for decades as an aid to mediation, sleep, and concentration, and interestingly enough, launched the concept of out of body experiences after Monroe's own experience with this technique. After a brief introduction, there is a 20 minute hemi-sync track which you can use in your own practice.  Warning, hemi-sync tracks are very powerful and you should do your own research before using it. The Monroe Institute has some great material available for purchase as well, so if you want to dive deeper, get more straight from the source. Understanding True Meditation
I have discussed meditation a lot on the podcast since its inception, but what is true meditation? How can we better understand the process of meditation and become better at it? On this episode of The Alchemical Mind, I go deep into the subject and the importance of focus and concentration in becoming better meditators. I start off by breaking down the different steps of meditation and how to use simple exercises to improve each aspect of the practice through simple concentration exercises. Then we bring it all together, and flip the practice on its side with a brief introduction to neti-neti. Finally, I wrap things up with a brief announcement about my solo meditation retreat. The Dive Manual With Anthony Tyler
On this episode of The Alchemical Mind, I am joined by Anthony Tyler, author of The Dive Manual: Empirical Investigations of Mysticism. In his book, Anthony weaves a fascinating story, part autobiographical, part fiction, of his journey into studying mysticism.  We dive into topics such as alchemy, Carl Jung and the science of the mind, why unexplained paranormal phenomena may just be an inherent property of ourselves and more. Of course, any journey into the mystical must include a discussion of authority, religion, philosophy, and psychedelics as well. I had a great time diving into these topics with a different slant from the usual discussion of the show, and I hope you enjoy the conversation as well. If you're interested in learning more, be sure to pick up Anthony's book. It certainly can be possible to find empirical evidence of the mystical realm through self-exploration. Beyond Hyperspace With Sean Cahill
On this episode of The Alchemical Mind, I am joined by retired U.S. Navy chief petty officer, Sean Cahill, that I feel really exemplifies just how connected alternative and mystical topics really are. Sean is more popularly known for his involvement in the first season of History Channel's "Unindentified: Inside America's UFO Investigation" and his personal experience with the Tic-Tac UFO event, but he is also a very grounded and deep thinker. Sean and I discuss the mystical experience quite a bit, and not just how it relates to the inner, spiritual journey, but its real world impact with events like UFO sightings, and other paranormal phenomena. We also dive into our own meditative and mindfulness practices, and of course, I had to ask him about his practice of wooden spoon making. Very zen indeed! If you have not done so yet, check out Sean's website, Minty Hyperspace, as well as his fantastic YouTube channel of the same name. Finding Your Mind Escape With Mike Mazzei
On this episode of The Alchemical Mind, I am joined by Mike Mazzei, half of the team behind the excellent Mind Escape podcast. We begin this episode with a discussion about the importance of balancing open-mindedness with a healthy dose of skepticism, before diving into the meat of the conversation as we talk about cognitive behavioral therapy.  Cognitive behavioral therapy (or CBT) is a tool that has proven invaluable to Mike in order to help him deal with changing certain harmful habits. Because of its close relationship with mindfulness, we dive a bit into how the therapy works, its relationship to the age old concept, and maybe even how you could try this as a practice to resolve some unwanted habits. If you're not subscribed to Mike's podcast, Mind Escape yet, you should. He and co-host Maurice dive deep into topics of ancient cultures, alternative views, mysticism, psychedelics, and more.  If you haven't subscribed to our show yet, be sure to do so on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. An Exercise In Silence
Silence is golden, says the famous proverb, but what exactly does this mean?  On this episode of The Alchemical Mind, I take a look at the importance of silence, not just on a philosophical level, but the actual real world effects of silence on our body and mind. I'll briefly discuss two studies which you can find in the show notes below, before diving into a quick, two minute exercise. Can you live in the moment for two minutes? What kind of emotions and thoughts arise from this exercise? Can you learn to stop acting and simply be? Let me know on Twitter, Instagram, or on the new The Alchemical Mind Facebook page.  Studies reference on this episode: Is silence golden? Effects of auditory stimuli and their absence on adult hippocampal neurogenesis Cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and  respiratory changes induced by different types of music in musicians and  non‐musicians: the importance of silence If you haven't subscribed yet, be sure to do so on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Escaping The Matrix With DJ Briggs
The Matrix is undoubtedly one of the most Gnostic movies of our times. Twenty years after its release, the themes discussed in the film are just as relevant as ever. On this episode of The Alchemical Mind, I am doing something a little different as I am joined by friend and listener DJ Briggs of The Bright Side Chat to discuss this seminal movie in Gnostic thought. While we use the movie as the foundation of our conversation, we focus more on its themes and how they relate to finding the True Self, escaping from the grasp of illusion, what it says about authority and consciousness, and so much more. We also dive into mindfulness and meditation and how they can be key tools to understanding these topics. We had a lot of fun with this episode, and I hope you will enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed recording it. I Am That I Am: Authority and Religion
Authority plays a large part in how we navigate our daily lives. On the last episode, I discussed the concept of authority and power, and why we choose to give our authority away. On this episode, I'll discuss the topic in relation to religious concepts and figures.  As you dive into this episode, remember that I use the term religion simply as a core set of beliefs guided by dogma so that we can discuss the topic in terms of science, politics, and religion. I do focus on what is more commonly referred to as religion and use several fantastic allegorical stories from Rumi, the Gospel of Thomas, and classic Zen Buddhism to illustrate some of the ideas in this episode. You Are It: Understanding That You Are The Ultimate Authority
What is authority? How do we gain our authority and why do we give it away? On this episode of The Alchemical Mind, I dive into the concept of power and authority and why you are the ultimate source of it. Why? Because you are IT, of course! By exploring the Sanskrit saying "tat tvam asi" (you are it) and the works of Rumi, Ibn Ata Illah, the Sermon On The Mount, and more, I dive into why there can be no authority but ourselves, why you are all that exists, and why you choose to deny it all for a sense of safety and temporary happiness. This is the first episode in a series in which I will dive into the concept of authority so give it a listen before diving into more specific examples as we go forward with the topic.  If you haven't subscribed yet, be sure to do so on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Knowing that you know nothing
"True knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing." -Socrates On this episode of The Alchemical Mind, I dive into an introduction to the mystical experience through a look at the 1884 book, "Flatland" by Edwin Abbott. What was originally supposed to be part of the upcoming "The mystical experience and psychedelics" episode, ended up becoming its own episode through a series of synchronicities that occurred to me this week.  Through the use a Carl Sagan clip on "Flatland", I talk about why the mystical experience is important, and why having these experiences should not be discounted. I also talk about falling into the trap of thinking the journey is over, confusing belief and knowledge, the neti neti method, and more. Knowing through unknowing may just be much more powerful. Finally, I wrap up with a beautiful story from Shaolin Master Shi Heng Yi, on not giving up on the journey. Your mind is like water: a mindfulness exercise
Mindfulness is a key part of meditation. When we are learning to meditate, we often hear phrases like "clear your mind" or "let the thought go." How do we do this? How do we stop our thoughts from clouding our minds? How do we stop them from taking control? The answer is simple: practice. On this episode of The Alchemical Mind, I discuss the important of trusting the universe and letting it go when it comes to a successful meditation practice. More importantly, I share a little mindfulness exercise I've been using for the past few weeks to help me come to center. How? By focusing on instinctual, simple behaviors like touching my face or scratching an itch. The applications of this small practice are broad and go beyond just "clearing your mind." Plus, how i learned to stop believing and began to understand "letting go," and some wise words from Terrence McKenna and Alan Watts. The mystical poetry of Rumi
Rumi was a thirteenth century Muslim poet and mystic who is often touted as one of the more famous mystics to ever come out of the Islamic world. His poetry has been read by billions of people over the past eight hundred years and with good reason. He is not only a master of language, but someone who truly understood the deep and mystical aspects of the universe. Rumi comes from the Sufi tradition of Islam, so I briefly discuss what that is before diving into the poetry and it's meaning. On this episode of The Alchemical Mind, I dive into the mystical aspects of his poetry by reading and analyzing a small selection. If you'd like to read more of his poetry pick up a copy of The Essential Rumi. Through Rumi's poetry, I discuss fear, embracing the darkness and the light, dealing with societal norms, and more. Even if you're not very familiar with Islam and Sufism, Rumi's work is well worth reading. Knowledge and understanding can come from every mystical tradition, and Sufism is a particularly beautiful one. If you enjoyed this episode, look for part two in the coming weeks. The kingdom of god is within you
"The kingdom of God is within you," says the famous quote from Luke 17:21. Yesterday, the president of the United States asked that all places of worship reopen to the public so people can worship God, as this should be an essential service. Is this true? Do we need to enter a "holy" place in order to gain some insight into the divine? Do we need to follow the words of some type of guru to gain any mystical insight? On this episode of The Alchemical Mind, I dive into this topic and how we have lost our personal relationship with the divine in the Western world. I dive into a beautiful quote from Rumi on the subject as well as reading a passage from the Gospel of Thomas that discusses how to find a connection with the divine and finding the kingdom of god. If you would like to read the Gospel of Thomas on your own, check out the following Amazon link. You can also read the full text of The Blind Men and The Elephant mentioned on this episode right here. After you listen to this episode, you may want to listen the last episode, Krishnamurti on meditation, authority, and fear, to prepare for a series of upcoming episodes on those topics.

Krishnamurti on meditation, authority, and fear
Krishnamurti was an amazing mystic and philosopher. He was born in India in 1895 and led a fascinating life as a member of Theosophy. He was brought into the organization at the age of 14 and regarded as the next World Teacher, a person born to usher in a new era for mankind, according to Theosophy. While it can be argued he lived a life of leisure as a result of his position, Krishnamurti rejected his mentors and followers and dissolved the Order of the Star of the East, an organization created to support the idea of him as the World Teacher. This episode of the podcast is something new. It is the start series serving to introduce you to people who truly understand what lies beyond the veil of illusion. For the first episode of this series, I have chosen one of my favorite speeches from Krishnamurti in which he discusses the true purpose of meditation, what authority is, why you give it away, why you give into fear, and so much more. This speech was chosen as an introduction to some deeply important topics I'll be diving into on the podcast over the next few episodes. Be sure to subscribe to get those episodes as they come out. It also serves as a bridge between some of the topics we have discussed over the last several weeks. Now that we have begun established some of the basics, it's time to dive in deep, so get ready. The Monkey Mind
As the world continues to deal with the current worldwide pandemic, you may find yourself filled with stress and worries which are beyond your control. You worry about washing your hands. You worry if you've washed your produce well enough. Will you be able to find toilet paper on your next visit to the store? This is an attitude that forms the basis for the monkey mind. Let's take some time to understand what the monkey mind is, how it arises, and why we allow it to be. You can find a full transcript of this episode at The Alchemical Mind.
