How Can I Stop Being A People Pleaser?

How Can I Stop Being A People Pleaser?

How Can I Stop Being a People Pleaser?

Have you recently come to realize that you are a people pleaser? Don't worry. This is a common revelation. But now that you've realized you are a people pleaser, it's time to stop being one for your own health and sanity.

Below are some ways you can learn to stop being a people pleaser.

Set Boundaries

The most important step to stopping your people-pleasing ways is to establish boundaries in your relationships. Of course, different relationships will have different boundaries, but they need to be there regardless. For example, if your significant other asks you to do something extra because they have a busy week ahead, this might be okay, but if your friend does this all the time, it might be time to draw the line.

Take Small Steps

Chances are, you aren't going to stop being a people pleaser overnight. Being a people pleaser has probably been ingrained in your mind since you were young. Therefore, you should start small instead of changing everything at once. To begin with, you can set some simple boundaries that shouldn't offend anyone. For example, let someone know you aren't available during work hours.

Set Goals For Yourself

It's important, as you stop being a people pleaser, that you have a clear direction for yourself to stop from sliding back into your people-pleasing ways. You should make goals of who you want to devote your time to and what you want to accomplish in life. It is common for people-pleasers to feel as if they need to please their parents to the point where they neglect their romantic relationships. If this sounds like you, your goal should be to devote more of your time to your significant other and less to your parents.

Engage in Positive Self-Talk

People pleasers feel good about themselves when they do something nice for someone else, and as you leave your people-pleasing ways, you will likely be missing this positive reinforcement. This is why you need to create it for yourself. Every time you establish a boundary and keep it, tell yourself you did a good job and that you are doing something good for yourself—because it may not feel as good as people-pleasing does at first.

Overall, the road to leaving your people-pleasing ways isn't going to be without struggle. But if you use the above tips, you'll find that you are actually enjoying doing something for yourself rather than people-pleasing all the time. Before you know it, your people-pleasing days will be nothing but a distant memory.

How Can I Prevent My Child from Becoming a People Pleaser?

How Can I Prevent My Child from Becoming a People Pleaser?

People-pleasing is a habit that can occur not only in adults but also in children depending on their particular situations.

It often happens in children due to a need they may not be getting from their parents, whether purposeful or not. There are, however, ways you can prevent your child from becoming a people pleaser.

Teach Them That Not Everyone Will Like Them.

Many people go into school thinking that everyone will like them and like the things they enjoy. It is especially true if they have never been to daycare or are an only child. It's important to teach them that it is okay if someone does not like them.

Encourage Them to Stand Out from the Crowd

Teaching them from an early age that it is okay to be different is an important part of preventing people-pleasing. If they know that it is okay to stand out and be independent, they are less likely to need the praise of others.

When Disciplining a Child, Do Not Make it About You

Children are going to make messes and mistakes. That is the nature of learning to be independent and growing up. When they make mistakes, be sure you are disciplining them for the behavior and not for intruding on your time.

Do Not Issue Threats

It is easy when a child is doing something less than good to threaten them about not doing it again. For example, "If you do that again, you will…." This action breeds people-pleasing behavior as they will learn that if they do not please you, they will get a punishment.

Praise Your Children, Just Do Not Go Overboard

Children need to hear more praise than they need to know when they have done something wrong. It is important to ensure that the praise is healthy and does not go overboard. Giving too much praise for the smallest things can turn them into people-pleasers who crave that praise.

Lead by Example

Children are naturally intuitive about the things they see and hear around them. Because of this, it is important to show them how to help others positively and healthily. If you sacrifice everything to help others, they will grow up doing the same things.

Overall, raising a child to be a kind, helpful, loving, and generous person is the primary job of a parent. It is also vital that you also teach them that while helping others is a good thing, they should also take care of themselves in the process.

5 Signs You Might Be a People Pleaser

5 Signs You Might Be a People Pleaser

5 Signs You Might Be a People Pleaser

Has someone told you that you are a people pleaser? It might be true, but it's a good idea to get a second opinion if you aren't sure. Below are 5 signs that you might be a people pleaser - consider these to be your "second opinion."

1. You Can’t Say No

Your friend has asked you for a favor for the 10thtime. Your boss just asked you to stay late again. Both of your divorced parents want to see you for the holidays. A people-pleaser says yes to all of these people because they can't seem to say no to anyone.

Not saying no means you are definitely a people pleaser, especially when you say yes to things that you know aren't going to work out.

2. You Constantly Wonder What Others Think

Are you always worried that your friends might hate you? Or that your significant other doesn't see you in the way you want them to see you? These anxious thoughts are a sure sign of people-pleasing behavior. Thoughts like these cause you to please others before taking care of yourself.

3. You Feel You Never Have You Time

Self-care is important, and most people-pleasers find they simply don't have the time. Mostly because they are too busy saying yes to everyone else. Take a look at your schedule. Do you have time penciled in just for you? If not, you're probably a people pleaser.

4. You Feel Bad Saying No

Okay, so maybe you can say no, and you have before. However, did you feel bad or guilty when you said it? You have every right to say no, and you shouldn't feel bad doing it. If you do, this is another sign that you are a people-pleaser.

5. You Constantly Apologize

Are you always apologizing for everything, even stuff that may not be your fault? This isn't healthy and means that you are probably a people-pleaser. People-pleasers want people to like them no matter what, which can lead to them apologizing for things they didn't just to make sure they stay in the person's good graces.

Did you find that three or more of these things described you and how you feel? If so, you are likely a people pleaser. If you don't want to damage your own health pleasing others, it's definitely time to accept that you are a people pleaser and begin looking for help to overcome your people-pleasing ways.

3 Things That Happen When You Stop People Pleasing

3 Things That Happen When You Stop People Pleasing

3 Things That Happen When You Stop People Pleasing

If you have ever been, or are currently a people pleaser, then you know how hard it is to break the habit of putting others before yourself all the time.

As much stress and anxiety pleasing others cause you, it can get worse when you choose to stop - at least initially. This is because of the guilt and shame that come into play when you start saying "no."

Making the decision to stop people-pleasing is an important step towards your freedom. You should know that three important things happen when you stop people-pleasing.

1. Discover Who Your Friends Are

Unfortunately, there will always be people who only want to hang out with you for what you can do for them. You cannot change these people as much as you want to. When you stop trying to please them and begin saying "no" sometimes, you may find that they suddenly do not have time for you.

2. Make Time for Yourself

When you stop giving all of your time and attention to everyone else, you tend to have more time for yourself. This means that not only are your needs met, but you may also have time to spend time on things that are important to you. Keep in mind that you may end up feeling guilty that you have time for yourself, at least in the beginning. Eventually, you will get used to it, though.

3. You Gain Confidence

The common trait most people-pleasers possess is low self-esteem. This is why you may prioritize the needs of others over yourself. When you stop people-pleasing, you begin to feel more confident in your actions. The more times you say "no," the surer of yourself you become.

You need to understand that you are not responsible for other people's thoughts or happiness. When you realize all of the stress and anxiety you feel because you are constantly doing for others is not worth it, then you will truly be able to move past your people-pleasing behavior.

At the end of the day, while some of the outcomes of stopping your people-pleasing habits may be unpleasant, keep in mind that eventually, you will feel better. The unpleasant feelings will pass at some point, leaving you feeling a sense of pride and peace that you may not have otherwise felt.

This usually occurs when you realize that your needs are just as important as others.

Self Hypnosis For Anxiety

Self Hypnosis For Anxiety

Anxiety is at an all time high especially after the year the world has just encountered.  I've dealt with anxiety all of my life.  At a time when the professionals really didn't call it 'anxiety' I had all of the classic symptoms from racing heart, the shallow breathing which often led to hyperventilating, sweating profusely, and at times having full blown panic attacks when it felt like the world was going to end.  Over the years, I felt forced to search for alternative ways of coping with anxiety.  There were times when I did try anti-anxiety medications, but I'm just not a compliant pill taker.  Breathing exercises, trying to tame my mind from racing, and self hypnosis have been a huge help with my personal anxiety.  I am sharing some of my self hypnosis scripts that were taken from a book called, "Help Yourself Heal With Self-Hypnosis" by author Linda Mackenzie.  The book was written some time ago back in the year 2000, but the scripts are still all very powerful.  She has scripts for many ailments.  I record a few scripts onto my phone and play them each night before going to bed.  I can even recall being on a plane during a business trip with my headphones on and playing them to keep me calm.  It's not a get better quick fix, but rather a subtle change that will start to snowball into making you feel better-at least that is what happen with me.

Take a listen as I will feature a few of these self-hypnotic scripts in hopes there is someone out there listening that it could help.

Until next time.

The Dark Woods Fable: A Story About A Beaver With Conviction

The Dark Woods Fable: A Story About A Beaver With Conviction
Peer pressure isn't always a comfortable thing - we want to be liked by our friends, but sometimes we just have to make those tough decisions and and not buckle under pressure. You're unlikely to get into trouble when you avoid following the crowd and think for yourself instead.
Self-Reflection Questions to ponder:

When you're with your friends, what do you do when they suggest an activity that you'd rather not do?
What does your internal self tell you about what you should do in those situations?
How does it feel to think for yourself and not follow the crowd?

The reason I've chosen to recite short stories is because for some individuals it's a lot easier to digest the concept. I like quick - hope you do, as well!

Ahh....fears. Everyone has them - but, they can be overcome. Although you may fear failure, believe in yourself and you, too, can soar like an eagle!

A few self-reflection questions:

  1. Do I allow fear to overcome me and prevent me from following through with trying something new?
  2. What are some things I want to do that I am avoiding because I'm afraid to fail?
  3. What is the worst that could happen if I tried these things?
  4. How can I give myself credit and recognition for making an effort in the face of my fears?

Yes, indeed it's true - beauty IS in the eye of the beholder. Sooner or later, someone who appreciates your beautiful traits will come along. Believe.

A few self-reflection questions:

  1. Do I depend on the opinion of others to feel worthy?
  2. Are my decisions based on what I need or what I think others want from me?
  3. How can I increase the confidence I have in myself?

The Utter Chaos - A Short Story About Searching For Truth In Chaos

The Utter Chaos - A Short Story About Searching For Truth In Chaos

It's easy to get caught up in situations that may appear larger than they really are.  Stay calm, even in chaos, to find the truth, as things are not always what they seem.

A few reflection questions to ponder:

  1. Have you ever found yourself in a panic over something that later turned out to be nothing?
  2. How might you have changed the outcome if you had stopped to think first?
  3. How can you help yourself stay calm in stressful situations?

Hurry Up And Wait - A Short Story About Patience

Hurry Up And Wait - A Short Story About Patience

Hurry Up And Wait - A Short Story About Patience

We've all been there - wanting something SO badly and right NOW that we try to do things to speed up the process to get it!  I think patience is a tough 'virtue'. Some may be born with it - others need to work at it. For me, it has taken a lot of practice!

A couple of self-reflection questions to ponder:

1. Are my goals realistic?

2. Do I often achieve what I set out to do in a reasonable timeframe?

3. Would I have a higher success rate if I would allow myself more time to complete my goals?

The reason I've chosen to recite short stories is because for some individuals it's a lot easier to digest the concept. I like quick - hope you do, as well!

Season 1 Episode 1 - Find Your True Calling And Life Purpose. In a world of conflict and contradiction, we are encountering loads of manipulation and corruption. Most people spend their lives defending what they do or how they think only to be criticized or put on the defensive. One way to overcome is to reach a state of complete inner peace.

  • Are you doing work that makes you want to jump out of bed every morning?
  • Does your work fulfill a deep need inside you so you can express yourself, your talents, your values, your unique and precious gifts?
  • Does you work allow a balanced life?
  • Are you doing what you love to do?

I personally found my life was being lived according to what 'others' thought I should be doing. First, it was my parents. Then my spouse. Now - I am doing "me". I am still learning and will always be learning. And, I have a deep desire to help others. So, that is what I am going to do my friends-help others.

Listen to this first debut podcast. It is only meant to be a precursor to get the juices flowing - to get you to start to 'think' about your life purpose. There will be similar episodes on this subject and many complementary episodes to follow.
