The Bullock Garden Project, Inc. (or BGP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping schools and organizations grow gardens & garden-based learning programs for children. We’ll be chatting about our journey from non-gardeners to nonprofit and having tons of laughs while we do it!
The holiday season is in full swing and while there is joy, there can also be a lot of stress associated with this time of the year. Sonya and Mer are joined by BGP Board Member, Onna Jones to have a candid discussion about self care during the holidays and dive deeper into ways to really look out for yourself. Show notes: SAMHSA Treatment Referral Helpline, 1-877-SAMHSA7/National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, 1-800-273-TALK (8255)
Green industry communicator, author, & BGP Bestie, Brie Arthur, join Mer and Sonya for a fun filled podcast discussing all things organic and Brie's new book, Gardening With Grains. Brie shares the importance growing grains in your landscape/foodscape will have in increasing soil health, overall ecological health, and personal health along with the importance of introducing gardening to children. She touches on how she fell in love with gardening as a child and how she transformed into the #CrazyGrainLady.

Newly appointed Chief Financial Officer, Christina Dickson, joins Meridith and Sonya for this podcast! The Dickson family is amazing and they're all motivated and inspired to be involved with the Bullock Garden Project.
The Dicksons love to grow their own food (they were the first ones to introduce Sonya to Cucamelons a few years ago) and work hard to be good stewards of the planet. Christina is a foodie so naturally there's a lot of chit chat about food!
Have you ever pickled Cucamelons (Mexican Gherkins)?
Last week Sonya and Mer discussed the collaboration between BGP and The Sacred Seeds. This week they’re thrilled to introduce listeners to Samuel Snyderman, Community Outreach Director for The Sacred Seeds. Learn about Sam, how he got involved with the Ruth Street, Kensington Project and why we need YOUR help to #GrowtheFuture. 💚❤️💚 Mentioned in the podcast: The Sacred Seeds - https://www.thesacredseeds.org/ Ashley Scott Designs - https://www.ashleyscottdesigns.com/links
November has been busy but amazing thus far! In this episode Sonya and Mer focus on one particular day, Saturday, November 2nd.
Highlights include: #GrowTheFuture with The Sacred Seeds and the Mushroom Cap Half Marathon Relay
Join in the chit chat and let us know what you're doing in November that makes you feel AMAZING.
For episode three Sonya and Mer chat (very long distance) with Dr. Kate Neale, from Southern Cross University in Australia. Dr. Kate is a phenom in the study of therapeutic benefits of gardening, and wrote an incredible garden education curriculum for ages 3-5, helping children grow self-empowerment along with their own food.
Dr. Kate has been featured as a guest blogger on the BGP blog, Seedlings, where she shares her thoughts on gardening for wellbeing. Do you have any questions OR a gardening joke/pun for Dr. Kate? Find us and use the hashtag #BadGardeningJokes

This week Sonya and Mer are joined by dynamo, Shawna Coronado. Her story of living with chronic pain and learning how to take care of herself through an anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle is one that we think will resonate with many listeners. Shawna's passion for what she does shines through, which is evident when listening to her speak. She's written many books, the latest being Stacked with Flavor (hence the name of this episode), a cookbook and guide you'll want to check out ASAP!
Enjoy listening to the conversation and let us know which recipe you're going to try first.
It's time to turn #Yuck2Yum! An idea is born as Sonya, Mer, and BGP board member, Christina, challenge each other and friends to try fruits, veggies, and... herbs, to which they might not be partial. Will opinions change? Will faces be made? Will they decide they'd rather not have any part in this and donate money to the Bullock Garden Project, Inc. instead?
We shall see!
Meet Onna Jones! Onna is BGP's Chief Operating Officer, is a brand new mom and the guest for this episode of Growing with the Bullock Garden Project. She is a mover, a doer, and always looking to take the Bullock Garden Project to the next level. She has a passion for helping others and helping low income families.
Onna shares some interesting information about what she's currently doing in regards to the Bullock Garden Project, including partnering with a huge home improvement company to help school gardens flourish.
You get to hear some little baby Dahlia squeaks, the official BGP baby and a couple of snuffles from Oscar the pup! The conversation leads to how life has changed for Onna and her husband, Dylan. She talks about self-care and how important it is to find a healthy balance, especially as a new mom.
Sonya and Mer also scout out Onna's yard and see the perfect spot for a home garden. Do you want to see the home gardens/yards of our BGP Board Members? Leave a comment and let us know!

Our hosts, Mer and Sonya, are pleased to host Teresa Brown during this episode. Teresa is the Environmental Specialist for the Bullock Garden Project, Inc. and is involved with many great projects!
The ladies chat about Teresa's front yard garden (be sure to check out the BGP social media accounts for pictures) and also the exciting plans Teresa has in regard for BGP full sensory learning.
Something special to listen for is an idea the Bullock Garden Project is really excited about: WORKSHOPS for those who are local (or those who want to travel). Coming up in late 2019, early 2020, we're looking to share the full sensory learning with the masses.
The episode rounds out with our hosts and Teresa chatting about some of the elements from her job and also the National Geographic Bee, or GeoBee for short. Enjoy!
Lucky episode 7 finds Mer and Sonya wishing they were in the mountains of Colorado with their guest, Jenn Perez. (Although they'd be chugging water to stave off the altitude sickness.)
Jenn lives in the mountains and her yard is often visited by moose, bears, and other critters so you won't find a garden outside of her home (there are plans in the works to chat about indoor gardening). She is a Sustainability Coordinator at Ball Aerospace and while things might seem a bit daunting in the world we live in today, Jenn breaks things down and shares some great tips with listeners including fashion, food sources, car choices, and being aware of local and state environmental issues.

During episode 5, Meridith and Sonya invited Ana Soley to join them at the BGP Studios to discuss what life was like going from apartment living in North Jersey to 1/4 acre to 16 acres in South Jersey over the past 10 years.
Whether it’s raising children or chickens (Ana does both these days) it was such a treat to talk to her and discuss her homesteading movement. Also discussed: the differences between North and South Jersey... and does Central Jersey truly exist? (The answer is yes, it does.)

This episode finds Sonya & Mer discussing Sonya's recent trip to the National Children & Youth Gardening Symposium, which took place at the University of Wisconsin in Madison (NO, she didn't bring back cheese OR Badger gear), where she presented on ways to integrate garden education into the general education curriculum. This way teachers can have an easier time incorporating garden-based learning through literature, while teaching across the curriculum. The two also dig deep into their health journeys which heavily influenced their passion for helping children across the globe live healthier lives through gardening.
