The Butterfly Effect

By Tali Orad

The Butterfly Effect podcast digs into stories of expert and regular people that make a difference with the planting of trees. Just like the butterfly effect theory which suggests that a minor change such as a flap of a butterfly wing can create a phenomenal change, this podcast will share the stories of communities; individuals supporting Mother Nature and the environment as well as the stories of trees. Hosted by Tali Orad, she will be giving the voice to all those stories, voice to the trees. Each episode will feature a special guest from the different industries. For more 1treellion.org

This butterfly is excited to be speaking with Shubber Ali.

Shubber Ali is the CEO of Garden for Wildlife, a program that began within the National Wildlife Federation. Shubber has spent the last three decades helping companies in the consulting and software industries solve problems through innovation. It was while Shubber was one of Accenture’s Global Leads for Digital  Innovation that he worked with the NWF to launch Garden for Wildlife as its own for-profit e-commerce company.

Garden for Wildlife allows people to make a difference for the environment by shipping plants native to their zip code that support local wildlife. Their team of experts has thoughtfully utilized 50 years of experience, science, and data to curate plant collections that support wildlife and benefit local ecosystems in every season. And for every plant GFW sells, they reserve one plant for donation to a community garden or public space.

Shubber is incredibly passionate about innovation, nature, and wildlife, and is on a mission to get as many people as possible to help save the planet, yard by yard. In 2023, GFW shipped over 62,000 plants across 38 states and 2,900+ cities in America.

In this episode, you will hear about his journey, rain-friendly gardens, what’s the value of buying native species, our lawns, pollinators, and more.

Episode 56 / The Butterfly Story of American Forests Hosting Jeffrey H Ryan

This butterfly is excited to be speaking with Jeffrey H. Ryan.

Jeff is passionate about the outdoors and the conservation of public land, whose work has been cited in Forbes, USA Today, and other notable publications. He is the author of Appalachian Odyssey (2016), Blazing Ahead (2017), and a new book This Land Was Saved for You and Me: How Gifford Pinchot, Frederick Law Olmsted, and a Band of Foresters Rescued America's Public Lands that came out in September 2022 tells the story of how America’s public lands—our city parks, national forests, and wilderness areas—came into being can be traced to a few conservation pioneers and proteges who shaped policy and advocated for open spaces. Some, like Frederick Law Olmsted and Gifford Pinchot, are well known, while others have never been given their due.

Jeffrey Ryan covers the nearly century-long period between 1865 (when Olmsted contributed to the creation of Yosemite as a park and created its management plan) to the signing of the Wilderness Act of 1964. Olmsted influenced Pinchot, who became the first head of the National Forest Service. In turn, Pinchot hired the foresters who became the founders of The Wilderness Society and creators of the Wilderness Act itself. This history emphasizes the cast of characters —among them Theodore Roosevelt, Bob Marshall, Benton MacKaye, Aldo Leopold, and Howard Zahniser—and provides context for their decisions and the political and economic factors that contributed to the triumphs and pitfalls in the quest to protect public lands. In researching the book, Ryan traveled to the places where these crusaders lived, worked, and were inspired to take up the cause to make public lands accessible to all.

In this episode, you will hear about the history of American forests, what he learned about Olmsted, Pichot, Jeff’s hiking experience, and more.

Niyanta is the founder and CEO of Rainforest Partnership, an impact-driven international nonprofit that uses the power of community-centered collaboration to protect rainforests—critical components in the global climate crisis—in some of the most critical places on Earth for biodiversity and climate.

Founded in 2007, Rainforest Partnership works to solve the challenge of deforestation by centering the needs of those on the front lines of the rainforest—Indigenous peoples and local communities. The organization builds collaborative relationships with rainforest communities as a trusted partner, developing comprehensive, ground-up solutions and economic responses that create effective and long-lasting conservation outcomes. In 2021 alone, RP’s efforts led to the durable protection and restoration of 1.16 million acres of rainforest in Peru, Ecuador, and along the Peru-Brazil border.

Powered by a powerful and passionate global team that seamlessly blends a compensated team, volunteers, and partners, the organization achieves high-value outcomes for forests through its own work, but also by its thought leadership that enables others to advance their impact more effectively.

A native of Tanzania, Niyanta attended boarding school in India. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from The University of Texas at Dallas and a Master of Public Affairs in Environmental Policy from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin. Prior to founding Rainforest Partnership in 2007, her career path included work at the first lobbying firm in London, leading a management consultancy, and working with Texas environmental agencies as part of a legislative agency. She chaired a chamber of commerce, served on the Austin Planning Commission, and served on the board of a US national health advocacy organization.

Episode 52 / The Butterfly Story of Making a Greener World Hosting Job van Hooijdonk

Episode 52 / The Butterfly Story of Making a Greener World Hosting Job van Hooijdonk

This butterfly is excited to be speaking with Job van Hooijdonk.

Job is co-founder of Regreener, an Amsterdam-based startup focusing on regreening the world. Before founding Regreener. He studied corporate law and worked as an M&A lawyer for an international law firm for several years. Being a millennial, he then started thinking about switching careers in order to be able to make an impact.

Looking at existing climate change fighting solutions, he noticed three things: (1) Most solutions were too complicated, (2) there was a major lack of transparency, and (3) almost all solutions were focused on the negative side of things. This finally resulted in the core values of Regreener: simplicity, transparency, and positivity. This means that Regreener is focused on simple solutions whilst focusing on providing its community with all the information about impact, finance, etc. and all is done in a positive way, meaning that the focus is on the green impact.

Regreener offers consumers and businesses the opportunity to plant trees, protect rainforests and offset carbon through carbon certificates. Furthermore, they are focusing on building check-out solutions for webshops, providing end customers with the opportunity to plant a tree.

In this episode you will hear about his work, transparency in “re-greening”, green projects, green in business, carbon credits, and more.

Episode 23 / The Butterfly Story of Climbing Trees Hosting Tim Kovar

Tim Kovar is a Master Tree Climbing Instructor with 30 years of teaching experience. His love and respect of nature, coupled with his wanderlust spirit, led him to metaphorically and literally take the vertical path less traveled. A path that has led him into the remote jungles of the world in pursuit of his vision to help connect others to our natural world.

In 1993, Tim began his career at Tree Climbers International in Atlanta, Ga., where he helped develop the standardized curriculum being taught around the world. Today, he continues to work closely with TCI, serving as their international instructor and ambassador, ensuring the integrity of the organization’s high standards. In 2005, the old growth forests of the Pacific Northwest lured him to Oregon where he co-founded Tree Climbing Northwest, which was operated by New Tribe. In 2010, he branched out on his own and founded Tree Climbing Planet.

In pursuing his vision, Tim has had the opportunity to work with many passionate people. He has worked extensively with canopy researchers stationed around the world, including ornithologists in Indonesia, primatologists in Uganda, entomologists in Ethiopia, and herpetologists in India, and students in Central America.

A true believer in sharing his knowledge, Tim consults with eco-tour operators and budding entrepreneurs wishing to plant their own schools.

In this episode you will hear about what it means to be a professional tree climber, the values in tree climbing, the does and don’ts, and much more.
