S3E010 Finding Truth In Fiction - Interview with S.C. Jensen

S3E010 Finding Truth In Fiction - Interview with S.C. Jensen

S.C. Jensen is a Canadian fiction writer, sci-fi and horror enthusiast, and literary advocate. She lives with her husband, children, and various fuzzy friends on an acreage in The-Middle-of-Nowhere (a.k.a. Northern Saskatchewan). She spends most of her days crafting stories about ordinary people forced to act in extraordinary situations and is perpetually rooting for the underdog.

That’s because she used to be the underdog in her own story.

Since quitting drinking on August 31, 2018, she’s come into her own as a sober creative and hopes to share her experiences with fiction lovers from all walks of life.

Jensen dabbles in horror, thriller, mystery, and contemporary literary fiction but her first reading and writing love has always been science fiction. Recently, she’s attempted to mash all these interests together—drawing from American pulp noir detective fiction of the 1930s-1950s and from cyberpunk sci-fi of the 1980s—to create a pulpy sci-fi thriller series called Bubbles in Space.

She’s used this series to play with all the toys in the genre fiction sandbox, dress archetypes up in the wrong outfits, flip tropes upside down, and generally make a mess of conventions and expectations. One big trope she’s decided to do away with is that of the alcoholic detective.

As a sober writer, it has become a personal goal for Jensen to focus on telling the stories of sober characters—both those in recovery and those who maintain abstinence for other reasons—as a way to normalize abstinence, sobriety and recovery in pop culture. She wants her books to be a safe, validating place for members of the sober community.

Bubbles Marlowe, a sober cyborg detective, marks Jensen’s first foray into writing sober characters, and she’s been extremely well received. Readers agree that Bubbles in Space is an absolute rollercoaster of fast-paced action, irreverent humor, larger-than-life characters, and plots that keep you guessing until the very end. But above all, they’re rooting for their favorite underdog, Bubbles.

S3E007 The Radio Rockstar - Interview with HUGGIE

Radio Personality and DJ, Dan Amsden, aka Huggie, thrived on boldness, charisma, and intensity on and off the mic when it came to his radio career of 10 years to DJing as 'TVTV.' To keep up the momentum and party life, he turned to cocaine which eventually led him to rehab.
After a year of being clean and sober, Huggie is grounding his creative passions by leaning into music, producing, and keeping an open mind towards what makes him grow into 'the artist way' of living while inspiring others around him to recover out loud.

Calvin Robinson is a singer/songwriter and owner of @superdupersoberclothing with 26 months, clean & sober, dedicated to sobriety, and working at the Rehab Center that he graduated in detox.

He didn't straighten up until 2018, after his life went downhill by doing meth & cocaine. He got caught on a warrant in October 2018 and stayed in the county jail until December 25th. The judge allowed him to go to rehab, where he got sober and graduated. CALVIN dropped his Album "The Prince of R&Bay," on March 13th, 2020. S2E003 Circle of Trust - Interview with Ben VanBuskirk + Blackout Orchestra Single "Nothing But Blue Skies"

Blackout Orchestra mastermind Ben VanBuskirk was going through a transitional period after years of ups and downs. At the end of a troubled relationship, he found himself two musical projects (the critic-approved death-obsessed shoegaze-pop band The Dearly Bereft, and feminist grunge provocateurs Green Girl), and at the end of his rope. Depression, anxiety, and alcoholism had him metaphorically, and on one night, literally, staring down the tracks at the lights of an oncoming train. He wasn't sure he wanted to get out of the way, but he did, and with the help of some close friends, he started to manage these issues that once seemed unsolvable. He got sober, he got counseling, and he started writing.

With the time and money no longer spent inching closer and closer to the floor of local dive bars and rock venues, he started writing songs, recording them on the only tools available to the self-professed Luddite — a guitar, a cheap Yamaha keyboard, and his BlackBerry cell phone. Instead of learning to bake bread or crochet, he spent his quarantine learning music production and putting together an album documenting the fall and rise of the last months and years.

S1E011 Sober Women of Rock Series: Interview with Alexx Calise + Single "Rise"

S1E011 Sober Women of Rock Series: Interview with Alexx Calise + Single "Rise"

Alexx Calise's personal statement is, "I don't feel sorry for being who I am." Delivering a sound that is both fresh and uniquely her own, Calise combines crunchy rock riffs with probing lyrics and hooky pop melodies.

Told throughout most of her career to not play guitar as much or at all, and to pursue a more “proven” musical direction, Calise instead chose to focus even more so on her instrument, practicing some 5-6 hours a day, and follow the only direction she knew how to—her own.

Countless film and TV placements and millions of Youtube hits later, Calise has proven that her torchy vocals, impressive guitar chops, and heart-and-soul lyrics are enough to make an incredible international impact, even as a completely independent artist.

Calise's hit song "Cry"--which became a web phenomenon almost overnight (spawning hundreds of covers, tributes, and dance routines) after it appeared on the Lifetime show “Dance Moms”—-has gone on to sell hundreds of thousands of downloads independently, and charted at #64 on the iTunes rock chart. Its official video features Sia's muse, Maddie Ziegler, who danced to the song in several episodes of the show. Calise also performed "Cry" on an episode of Dance Moms along with Nia Sioux and Kendall Vertes, and she performed on an episode of "Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition" with Maddie Ziegler.

Ever-growing and ever-changing, the effervescent Calise is continuing to make waves one small step at a time, currently penning songs for her band with Dennis Morehouse, Batfarm, and her other music project with Rob Johnson, Sensitive Robot. She is also a freelance writer for a variety of publications including Music Connection and Guitar Girl, a host for Guitar World magazine, an accomplished model and actress, and a small business owner.

Alexx has been walking the path of sobriety for the last 36 months, learning to navigate through the rock and roll environment, thriving in creativity, and staying true to who she is.

Calise’s music has appeared on a multitude of different shows such as “Dance Moms” (Lifetime), "Dance Moms: Miami" (Lifetime), "Last Call With Carson Daly" (NBC), "The Voice" (NBC), Audrina” (Vh1), "Tough Love" (Vh1), “NY Ink” (TLC), “Next” (MTV), "10 on Top" (MTV), “One Tree Hill” (CW), "Texas Women" (CMT) and in the feature film, “LA, I Hate You” starring Malcolm McDowell and William Forsythe.

She has become a festival favorite at eclectic live events and gained the attention from brands like Stetson, Wrangler, and Tecovas Boots, all of which have signed her on as a model/spokeswoman.

She mostly hits the road accompanied only by her truck, Wanda. Still, she has also supported legends like Hayes Carll, Ray Wylie Hubbard, James McMurtry, Lisa Marie Presley, Marty Stuart, Paul Thorn, Jesse Winchester, Colter Wall, the late Delta bluesman T- Model Ford, and Leon Russell. She is an internationally recognized tunesmith placing first in the International Songwriting Competition, the Unsigned Only Music Competition, and the John Lennon Songwriting Contest.

Her lyrics weave vivid imagery of a life lived with authenticity and grit with a Faulknerian Southern-Gothic storytelling style, always paying homage to her Delta roots. Her television appearances include PBS' Sun Sessions and NBC's The Voice - Season 4, where she represented Team Blake. Since Jan. 1, 2018, Askew has written and live-streamed a new original song daily for her loyal Facebook and Instagram followers. This date also markers the day she decided to get sober.

S1E009 A New Kind of Alive - Interview with Amanda Thompson

S1E009 A New Kind of Alive - Interview with Amanda Thompson

Amanda Thompson is a sober (but not boring) artist and creative entrepreneur from Brighton in the UK at her Studio in the Sky.  She has been creative as far back as she can remember and has been keeping sketchbooks for 30 yrs, while completed daily drawings for 3 consistent years. In 2018, Amanda lost her way and was unsure what to do with all her art and patterns. She then started to work with a business mentor, Ali Mapletoft. Things began to change for her when she set up Creatively Curious, which brought out a range of luxury sketchbooks and notebooks. She decided then to get sober when she fell in love with building her brand rather than a pint of lager. On September 1st, 2019, Amanda stopped drinking and experienced the next 14 months to be life-changing. She described her creativity as on another level and grew her passion for inspiring women to make changes in their relationship with alcohol with creativity. Amanda's The Sober Artists Club is a new way to socialize without alcohol.

S1E02 Healing Through Art - Interview with Alli Bratt

Alli Bratt is a mixed media artist, whose mediums include painting, drawing, and collage incorporating reclaimed materials. Originally from California, Alli received her BFA from Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. She has lived and made art in Portland, Oregon, for eleven years. Alli’s work has been shown, both individually and in group shows, in various coffee shops and galleries. Inspiration in her work stems from the natural world, working through grief and depression, and now finding new meaning in her art and life through sobriety. A long-time lover of nature and the environment, her work shifted from more traditional painting styles and techniques to implementing reclaimed, found, and discarded items that minimize the environmental impact of her work.
