By The Family

At The Family, we believe that anyone can become a great entrepreneur.

Why? Because information is accessible, tools are cheap and capital isn't as necessary as it used to be years before, especially when you start.

So, if you want to build your own startup, all you need is... to get your hands dirty and work on your ambition!

This Podcast is made exactly for that, to help you learn and take action ;)

#33: Fundraising 101 by Oussama Ammar, Co-founder at The Family

Anyone asking you to work on a business plan while you’re still searching for a virtuous business model isn’t an investor you want. Who you raise money from is a key question - not every dollar is the same 💵  Good money comes when you can reverse the balance of power. Raising funds is like a mix between playing poker and buying a house. You need to go all in with your own cards. But you can’t keep a poker face in front of the landlord, because it could be a long-term relationship, and that should be based on honesty 🃏

#32: Behind the scenes of the Payfit growth machine with Firmin Zocchetto

#32: Behind the scenes of the Payfit growth machine with Firmin Zocchetto

What happens when you live with your co-founder, first employee and your girlfriend for 3 years? You apparently end up with one of the fastest growing companies EVER! 😁 If anyone ever told you that giant companies don’t come out of Europe, well PayFit is on the verge of changing that! Since their launch PayFit grew to 200 employees in just 3 years, moved from 40m2, to 200m2, to 2000m2 offices and raised more than €$100M Million🔥

And if you’ve ever seen somebody in love, thats how VCs look like when you mention serial entrepreneur, and CEO of PayFit, Firmin

Only 26 years old Firmin is tackling one of the fastest and most convoluted industries - HR. According to Forbes the HR market is expected to be worth $30bn by 2025, and at the heart of all the incredible innovation is PayFit. 🚀

If that didn’t pop your eyes out 👀, here is another insane fact: to realise the insanity behind PayFit they invented their own programming language Jetlang. 👾

Harry Stebbings, partner at Stride and founder of The Twenty Minute VC joined us on stage to interview Firmin about his journey. Hope you enjoy it.

#30: Why am I the CEO by Oussama Ammar, Co-founder at The Family

#30: Why am I the CEO by Oussama Ammar, Co-founder at The Family

There is only one CEO. And the CEO isn’t necessarily the smartest person in the room 🧠

It’s also not necessarily the person who had the idea: ideas have no value. The CEO is the person who you all agree has the ultimate responsibility, the person who is making the final decision.  People like the title of CEO but there are downsides as well: You have to be an excellent manager, and that’s hard. It’s hard to nourish all of the relationships within the company, to have open conversations when things aren’t going well, to personally handle the most difficult times in the life of a startup.

So one piece of advice: Always make the most sensible person on your team the CEO 👐

#28: Build a virtual world with a community by Mundi Vondi, CEO & Co-Founder of Klang

Picture this 👉 earth is on the verge of extinction, in order to survive you travel with the remaining human survivors to an inhabitable planet. 🌍 There you need to build a new community and start a new life.  It seems quite probable, no? Don’t worry we are not there … yet. 😉

But for Mundi Vondi, CEO and co-founder of Klang, this scenario is not just a lingering thought. Together with his team, he has built a game called Seed, that would allow us to virtually live out this story. 👾  We are very excited to have Mundi at The Family. 🙌 He will share with us what it means to create games using new technology that allows for more players to exist in the same world, way beyond what has previously been possible.  Amongst other things, he will also discuss with us the structuring of the politics inside of Seed and what it means to build a virtual government. 🤓

#26: Building trust when you are a nobody by Sophie Chung, Founder of Qunomedical

#26: Building trust when you are a nobody by Sophie Chung, Founder of Qunomedical

When you’re starting out, no one knows you, yet you have to convince your customers, employees, investors to believe in you.

Everyone’s expecting you to step up, or fail!

So how do you build trust?

Meet an entrepreneur who's cracked this problem in one of the toughest industry to start with: Health.

Dr. Sophie Chung is the CEO and founder of Qunomedical, a digital health platform that is providing patients worldwide access to high-quality affordable healthcare.

In this talk, she shares the story and the mindset it required her to grow her startup from 0 to +4,000 patients per month across 25 countries.

The secret to their early success?  Customer CARE. It's that simple.  From day 1, her approach was to move slow to move fast! When you’re small, you can afford to be true to your mission every step of the way. Qunomedical limited their offer to ensure they were providing the highest quality possible.

Dr. Sophie Chung is the CEO and founder of Qunomedical, a digital health platform that is providing patients worldwide access to high-quality affordable healthcare. After earning her MD degree from Medical University of Vienna, Sophie gained first-hand experience in treating patients as a doctor in Australia and provided access to healthcare whilst working at an NGO in Cambodia. Prior to founding Junomedical in 2015, Sophie worked at digital health startup Zocdoc in New York, and for McKinsey & Company in Berlin.

#25: Your startup's first 100 days by Oussama Ammar, The Family

ABOUT THE EPISODE:

Going from 0 to 1 isn’t an achievement on its own, but nailing it from the beginning is necessary for greatness. Starting a company can take various forms and diametrically opposed directions. What are the first steps you should have in mind when you start? What are the right reflexes in terms of mindset and decisions to adopt from day 1 in order to maximize your chances of success?

You may have heard of booming startups such as Algolia, Payfit, Heetch or Agricool - well, Oussama has known them from their very first days. He also saw a lot of failures and tells us more about the key things he noticed that can be game changers at the very beginning of a startup.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Oussama Ammar is the Co-Founder of The Family. He got his first taste of the startup world when he was 12 years old and launched one of the first web agencies in France. He spent a few years working on it with multiple spin-offs and independents platforms, including one of the first online antique shops. In his early 20’s, after a quick detour through the social sciences, law, logic and philosophy at La Sorbonne, Oussama created Hypios that became, in less than 3 years, one of the few open innovation leaders in the world. Angel Investor for over 2 years with 21+ active deals (most of them Silicon Valley-based).

#21: Surviving your first 24 months as a startup by Fred Destin, Partner at Stride.VC

ABOUT THE EPISODE:

Toxicity is everywhere, and your capacity to avoid it during the first two years of a startup matters a lot. When you don't focus early on on the things that actually provide value to your company like talking to your customers and building your product, you lose time. This loss and the lack of intensity associated with it can kill your dynamics and jeopardise your chances of success. Focus on the right stuff & choose wisely your investors.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Fred is a rockstar in the VC industry and a Partner at Stride.VC. He has been a board member for companies including Dailymotion, Deliveroo and PriceMinister.  He’s led many rounds and observed startups from early stages to global expansion. #19: A Brief History of Leverage and Power by Oussama Ammar, The Family

#19: A Brief History of Leverage and Power by Oussama Ammar, The Family

ABOUT THE EPISODE:

Being truly powerful has always involved masterfully exploiting leverage. Leveraging means using borrowed capital, labour or networks to increase the impact of one’s investments, financial or otherwise.  For most of human history, leverage was only accessible to those with physical force, or land, or networks, or capital. But leverage has never been as accessible as it is now.

Social media, software and the commoditization of capital have meant that one’s thought, one’s work and one’s financial investments can now be leveraged at essentially no cost. Write an article on Medium and within a day it can be read hundreds of thousands of times for free. Create a new SaaS product, and it can be sold to hundreds of clients, with almost no additional work.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Oussama Ammar is the Co-Founder of The Family. He got his first taste of the startup world when he was 12 years old and launched one of the first web agencies in France. #17: Advertising & Branding in the 21st century by Ian Leslie, Author

#17: Advertising & Branding in the 21st century by Ian Leslie, Author

ABOUT THE EPISODE:

Businesses depend more and more on the multitude of consumers they address. They MUST build great products, and ads can’t cover up as much as they used to. Take Tesla: Lots of trendy & successful companies aren’t using any traditional advertising.  Advertising is becoming more of a business and less of an industry.

It’s now the playing field of people driven by efficiency, not just creativity. Consumers are seeing images made just for them, based on their data and precise targeting. But targeting narrows perspectives, it takes away shared stories, and doesn’t expose companies to mass markets. And critically, it leaves the door open to messages optimized for interactions, where extreme content rises to the top.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Ian Leslie worked for many years as a strategist in advertising agencies before starting a career as an author & journalist. In the past several years, he’s written two super successful books: Curious and Born Liars. Advertising & branding have no secrets for him: How the advertising world is evolving; how one must think about advertising for their own startup in this new age; how does this new world impact the work entrepreneurs do on branding?

#16: Startup Ideas 101 by Oussama Ammar, The Family

ABOUT THE EPISODE:

Don’t fall in love with one single brilliant idea. As an entrepreneur, you’re fighting against a problem, you’re not worshiping ideas. Problem first, idea second.  You’re about to dedicate all of your time & energy to tackling this problem, so make sure it’s a good one. A good problem is real, you can clearly acknowledge and define it, and it’s getting worse every day.  Leave your ideas behind and concentrate on the problem that obsesses you 👾

#15: Learn to learn by Oussama Ammar, The Family

ABOUT THE EPISODE:

One of the things we’ve noticed amongst ourselves at The Family is that the entrepreneurs who impress us the most are the ones who have the steepest learning curve, the ones who have the most to learn and who are able to push that curve upwards as fast as they possibly can.

Learning quickly is about believing wholeheartedly that you are able to do it, focusing on what you are good at & trying to learn all the time. Plus, if people understand how to look for answers in today’s world, their rate of learning can go way up.

#11: Founders, don’t fuck up your cap tables by Oussama Ammar, The Family

ABOUT THE EPISODE:

Are you trying to raise €250k to start building your company? Stop everything and listen to this podcast.

Your cap-table (% of ownership of your company between founders, investors, employee) is one of the most important asset you have. Don’t fuck it up. Why?  Because if you’re raising money without leverage (traction, previous exit), you’ll most likely get a bad deal. You’ll end-up raising money from Angels that will take 15 to 25% of your company. Then your nightmare starts. We’ve seen it over and over again at The Family. One of our obsession is to keep our companies virgin. Because fucking-up your cap-table % is like getting a face-tattoo when you’re drunk. It’s an irreversibly bad idea.

Oussama Ammar is the Co-Founder of The Family. He got his first taste of the startup world when he was 12 years old and launched one of the first web agencies in France. #10: Lessons learned from Flickr, Etsy & Yes VC with Caterina Fake

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Caterina Fake is an investor at the American fund Yes VC. Going through her amazing career would take HOURS, but the highlights were being the cofounder of Flickr (the photostorage website, acquired by Yahoo) and on the board of both Etsy and Creative Commons. What is really impressive about her path is that she never let herself be constrained by her environment. With a background in art & literature, she is always able to reinvent herself & learn new things to achieve upcoming milestones 🏆

ABOUT THE EPISODE:

This Silicon Valley figure is a role model, an example of dedication & creativity, able to enter and master the tech world both as an accomplished entrepreneur and now as an investor. Her curiosity and pragmatism constantly shine through, like with her latest podcast: Should This Exist? We were super excited to welcome her on stage with our Director Mathias Pastor. They talked about her journey from the early days of the web, Himalaya, homeschooling, the future of technology... A lot of ground has been covered here!

#9: Inside Zalando: From Startup to IPO in 6 years by Boris Radke, ex. CCO at Zalando

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Boris Radke joined Zalando at an early stage when the startup was hitting the ground running to stay ahead of its hyper-growth. With no prior experience for this size of project, he was assigned to build the logistics footprint from scratch. He is now the Chief Information Officer of ProSiebenSat. 1 where together with his team, he is taking care of the technical and digital infrastructure, and transforming the enterprise application landscape for the entire group.

ABOUT THE EPISODE:

From its launch in 2008 as a small Rocket-backed startup, Zalando grew to become Europe’s #1 e-commerce platform and a €10B publicly-listed company... in 6 years.  And it did so rather quietly, keeping a low profile on its internal operations. So what's the story behind this huge success? Awesome no? What’s even more awesome is that Ada raised $69.3M to push full steam ahead and influence the health system for the better.

We are overly excited to have had Dr. Claire Novorol at The Family for a fireside-chat lead by Balthazar De Lavergne, Director at The Family. She is the Founder and Chief Medical Officer of Ada and shared valuable insights with us.

#1: European toxicity by Oussama Ammar, The Family

#1: European toxicity by Oussama Ammar, The Family

ABOUT THE EPISODE:

Europe is toxic for entrepreneurs.

Does that mean nothing can survive? Nope. It means some startups that should succeed don't.

People think that creating accelerators and incubators can create another Silicon Valley. But those things weren't the cause of Silicon Valley's success - they were a consequence of it, a way to allow people that work hard and have the right mindset to be really close to each other.

Europe isn’t Silicon Valley, and trying to copy it without really understanding it is a waste of time. And yes, in Europe we like to waste time. But as an entrepreneur, there are three things that you need: capital, talent, and time.

So what about all those incubators and accelerators across Europe, created to help entrepreneurs but that just...don't?

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Oussama Ammar is the Co-Founder of The Family. He got his first taste of the startup world when he was 12 years old and launched one of the first web agencies in France. He spent a few years working on it with multiple spin-offs and independents platforms, including one of the first online antique shops.
