Episode 45 - You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzfah

Episode 45 - You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzfah

The Sandler schmucks are back, this time considering 2023s "You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzfah."

This family picture stars Adam Sandler's daughter Sunny as a young Jewish girl, somberly reflecting on faith and Jewish identity in a world that seems hellbent on challenging these things. Why, God, must you throw such pitfalls in our path, us, your humble flock? How can we hold onto our belief in you when you curse us so? Actually, I might be getting this movie mixed up with the Coen Brothers film "A Simple Man." I think one of them had a pretty good period joke in it.

Conversation topics include the vulgarity of youth, getting older and NOT losing touch, goddammit, and just where did all these wacky religions come from anyway?

Episode 44 - Airheads

Episode 44 - Airheads

Your favorite Sandler slackers have returned, with this much requested (by Chris) episode in which we air out "Airheads". In this 1994 comedy, Brendan Fraser, Steve Buscemi, and Adam Sandler play a band of heavy metalers determined to get their demo on the air. But is this movie a slam dunk of goofy rock n roll comedy, or more of an airball?!

Discussion includes: the meaning of counter-culture! Justin doesn't really like Brendan Fraser (sorry folks)! And is it possible to make good art over 30 (not a chance)?! All this and much much more!

Episode 43 - Murder Mystery 2

Episode 43 - Murder Mystery 2

The Sandler sleuths return to solve "Murder Mystery 2," a sequel to the hit Netflix feature from 2019. Here we ponder the important questions in life, including: Is it possible to make a good sequel? And is it possible to make a good Spider-man movie that isn't an origin story? (And yes, we also talk about the Terminator in this one).

Brief spoilers between 10:15 and 10:35

Episode 42 - Hustle

Episode 42 - Hustle

The Sandler Sports Fans talk 2022's "Hustle," basketball, and reminisce on their own somewhat fair weather sports fandoms. This Netflix distributed drama does not feature any funny voices, but it does have a lot of NBA players in it. Justin can't seem to stop summarizing the movie. So tell me: Do you love this podcast? Are you obsessed with it?

Episode 41 - Hubie Halloween

Episode 41 - Hubie Halloween

Your Sandler Specters are back in this special Halloween episode of the Fourth Adam Sandler Podcast! In this episode the boys hash over "Hubie Halloween," a 2020 Netflix film that's chock full of tricks, treats, mysteries, barn parties, werewolves, escaped mental patients, and flatulence. But is this just a shameless nostalgia cash-in for those ol days of looking for Milky Way bars 'round the neighborhood, or a is this one a true graveyard smash?!

Episode 39: Murder Mystery

Episode 39: Murder Mystery

Your Sandler Sleuths try to crack the case of 2019's "Murder Mystery," the second pairing of Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston.

In this tribute to classic who-dun-its, Sandler plays a wannabe police detective who, along with Aniston, his mystery-loving wife, get wrapped up in a real caper straight out of Agatha Christie (but with our boy's beloved Happy Madison humor firmly intact). But will our amateur detectives get a clue before its curtains for them? And will Chris and Justin ever stop making jokes about severed hands?

Spoilers for the "solution" start around 40:00.

Episode 38: Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation

The spooky Sandleroonies return once more to the monster-filled world of Hotel Transylvania, a series they have so far been somewhat hot and cold on. But could this gag filled voyage to the depths of Atlantis finally be the one that wins them over?

As a bonus we also go into an extended discussion of the rapidly expanding dominance of Disney over all of pop culture. Spoiler: we're not that into it!

Episode 35 - Sandy Wexler

We're back after a bit of a hiatus for your, uh, summer episode of the Fourth Adam Sandler Podcast! This time we're talkin' "Sandy Wexler," Adam Sandler's third straight to Netflix picture, a star studded vehicle based loosely on Sandler's old talent manager. What's next, a cartoon about his caddy? A musical about his make-up artist? Just kidding folks, it's all good.

Our rambling conversation includes new thoughts on Adam Sandler's appeal,  Margaret Atwood's time capsule novel, and the literally dozens of cameos in the movie.

Note: One of the best jokes in the movie is spoiled at 57:50 so if you're at all inclined to watch it, I advise you to skip to 1:05:38

Episode 34 - The Do-Over

Episode 34 - The Do-Over

The Sandler dudes "do" the Do-Over, Adam Sandler's second direct to Netflix feature, in which Adam Sandler and David Spade depict a daring duo determined to get a "re-do" on their dull day-to-day. But is this a diamond in the rough or just a disappointing dud?

Digressions include Elon Musk and "vacation country music."

Episode 32: Hotel Transylvania 2

The Sandler sleuths scrutinize the second Sandler sequel, 2015's Hotel Transylvania 2. But is this spooky satire a soaring success or just another case of subpar sequilitis?

Digressions include self-aware fantasy films, theorizing about the Sony hack, the the continuing mystery that is Allen Covert and much much more!

Episode 31: Pixels

Episode 31: Pixels

The Sandlernistas pontificate about Pixels, starring Josh Gad, Peter Dinklage, Kevin James, and of course, Adam Sandler. But is this Chris Columbus directed special effects romp an arcade king, or waste of your three lives? (Hint: We save our long eps for the classics, friends.)

Discussion covers Tim and Martin Hirlehy, new and familiar faces, Jimmy Carter's brother, nerds, Adam Sandler's attractiveness, the directorial touches of Chris Columbus, conspiracy theories, and more!

Episode 30 "The Cobbler"

Episode 30 "The Cobbler"

Those got-dang Sandler boys dig their chops into "The Cobbler" a film by "Spotlight" director Tom McCarthy featuring Adam Sandler as a shoe cobbler with a very special, um, cobbling machine.

Discussion includes turning invisible and ethics (and Plato), cameos, racist depictions and problematic plot points, making good and bad art, and just what exactly are you supposed to use this power for anyway?

This was the last episode we recorded in 2020, our most productive year ever!

Episode 29 - Men, Women & Children

Episode 29 - Men, Women & Children

In this very special episode of the Fourth Adam Sandler Podcast, our boys review a movie that is only nominally Adam Sandler related, the 2014 Jason Reitman directed comedy-drama, "Men, Women, & Children," a movie that explores the ever tumultuous relationship between human connection and technology in a series of overlapping narratives. But is this a poignant look at how people strive to connect, or a somewhat heavy-handed morality tale about the perils of internet addiction?

Discussion includes the liminal state of being a teenager, death anxiety, the Pina Colada Song, being the "edgy" kid in high school, and the timely question: is technology here to destroy us?

Also Joe Biden is gonna be President now. We talk about it.

Episode 28: Blended

The Sandler stans are back with a look at "Blended", the third pairing with Drew Barrymore, and another new location, this one an African resort! We talk about what exactly "blending" refers to, Shaq cameos, the dead wife trope, the experience of being a tourist, the early 90s Tom Hanks film "Joe vs the Volcano", and a whole lot more!

Episode 26: Hotel Transylvania

Your favorite Sandler sleuths book a room at the Hotel Transylvania, a spooky hotel hosting many of the usual suspects, and directed by animation wiz-kid Genndy Tartakovsky. This is Adam Sandler's first animated film since Eight Crazy Nights, but is this a new animated classic or does it just kinda bite (I'll see myself out).

Featuring: Covid-19 updates, a fairly long discussion of Samurai Jack, getting dropped into stories in the middle, cameos (of course), Miley Cyrus, colonized people, women in refrigerators, parody films, vampire “rules” and much more!

Episode 25: That's My Boy

Episode 25: That's My Boy

The raunch of Sandler’s early comedy finally makes its proper big screen debut in this team-up with fellow SNL alum Andy Samberg. Sandler stars as Donnie Berger, a washed up Z-list celebrity famous for knocking up his teacher in middle school in a hilarious and/or quite problematic depiction of child abuse, who, through various plot happenings, must reconnect with his long lost son just before the estranged offspring’s wedding. Beers, bodily functions, cameos, you name it, it’s all here. Looks like raunch is back on the menu boys!

Note, this episode was recorded before the recent Black Lives Matter protests of the past month or so, but obviously we support it 100 percent. Black Lives Matter, always.

Episode 24: Jack and Jill

Episode 24: Jack and Jill

Uh oh! In this romp, it’s double the Sandler trouble as he plays a set of twins - a brother and sister! Our own duo of Sandler dilettantes discuss one of the most notoriously bad Sandler films of all time. A winner of 10 Golden Raspberry Awards and panned by critics, but does it deserve the drubbing? Or is there a little bit of “twin magic” to be had here? Also featuring a stellar performance from Al Pacino (the movie, not our podcast.)

Episode 23: Just Go With It

Episode 23: Just Go With It

Our intrepid Sandler sleuths investigate Just Go With It, the first Adam Sandler match-up with Jennifer Aniston, and an adaptation of a (presumably) classic French farce called Fleur de cactus (and 1969 American film, Cactus Flower). Adam Sandler routinely uses the deception that he is married to sleep around, but what happens when a woman (who just might be the one) calls his bluff? An escalating series of lies culminating in a trip to (where else but) Hawaii, and some classic Happy Madison high jinx. Is this a hidden gem of the Adam Sandler filmography, or did Chris just drink too much wine when he watched it on Easter Sunday?

May 04, 202001:18:52
Episode 22: Grown Ups

Episode 22: Grown Ups

In this Special Quarantine Episode, the Sandler Sports discuss the merits of one of the most famous movies of Adam Sandler’s “second act:” Grown Ups. Often criticized by online movie critics even more famous than we are, but is there more than meets the eye with this star-studded celebration of adulthood?

Apr 03, 202001:17:29
Episode 21 Funny People

Episode 21 Funny People

Our two Sandler scoundrels take a look at Funny People, the Judd Apatow directed tour de force featuring Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, and a whole bunch of other people. A long film that looks at friendship, heartbreak, mortality, stand up comedy, dick and fart jokes, and, perhaps, the strange need for connection that drives one to become one of the so-called “funny people.”

Featuring a special extended appearance by the neighbor’s puppy! Neither host dare acknowledge him, but dear listener, let his pervasive barking remind you of the interconnectedness of all things!

Mar 19, 202001:23:05
Episode 20: Bedtime Stories

Episode 20: Bedtime Stories

The two Sandler Stooges discuss Adam Sandler’s first expressly family friendly movie, a collaboration between Happy Madison and Disney. We only get all SJW-y for a little bit at the end Thank God!

I (Chris) also have to issue a correction: Rob Schneider is, indeed, one of the “grown-ups.” Congratulations Rob!

Episode 19: You Don't Mess With the Zohan

Episode 19: You Don't Mess With the Zohan

The intrepid students of Sandler discuss “You Don’t Mess With the Zohan,” a delightfully whimsical movie about an Israeli counter-terrorist who becomes a hairdresser, a story that is completely apolitical and cannot be connected to any sort of extremely volatile or controversial real world issue.

Episode 18: I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry

Episode 18: I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry

Kevin James marries Adam Sandler! Rob Schneider plays a Japanese man! Allen Covert is in this movie! And we piece together a few more pieces of the larger puzzle that is the “Sandler-Multiverse.” It’s all part of the wacky world of “I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry."

Feb 03, 202001:22:55
Episode 17: Reign Over Me

Episode 17: Reign Over Me

Just like a 90s cereal munching dinosaur, we’re back!, this time coming at you with a discussion of 9/11 inspired dramady Reign Over Me. Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle play two former buds who begin rekindling an old friendship. But while Alan (Don Cheadle) seems to be using it as an excuse to recapture some of the whimsy of his semi-recent youth, Charlie (Adam Sandler) is dealing with a deeper trauma, one that is totally not political, unless it is in-fact totally political.

Is this a decent enough examination of friendship and trauma in the modern age with a few laughs and some good performances? Or a careless cash-in of a national tragedy that, like Don Cheadle’s character, doesn’t seem to know what it really wants?!

Episode 16: Click

Episode 16: Click

The Soggy Sandler Boys watch another Adam Sandler film. This one’s about a guy who gets a remote that’s really out of this world! That kind of makes it sound like it’s from space. It’s not from space. I don’t think it is anyway.

Episode 15 The Longest Yard

Episode 15 The Longest Yard

Your rambling boys of Sandler touch tackle another football feature, this time with the lighthearted and not at all depressing twist that it all takes place in a brutal Texas penitentiary. Featuring all your favorites: flubs, long-winded digressions about masculinity, probably a football pun or two.

Episode 14 Spanglish

Episode 5 The Wedding Singer

The fifth episode of the Fourth Adam Sandler Podcast, in which the fellows discuss the much loved RomCom classic “The Wedding Singer.” Is it really that romantic though, or are we all just lost in a haze of lovesick 80s MTV classics, riding that nostalgia wave into a dayglo sunset…. Also discussed: what is nostalgia, and where may I get some?

Episode 4 Bulletproof

Episode 4 Bulletproof

A different kind of movie altogether. Does Bulletproof belong in the pantheon of classic buddy cop action films? Or chucked into the overpass like all of Mel Gibson’s empty Foster’s cans?

Episode 3 Happy Gilmore

Episode 3 Happy Gilmore

A deep dive into the character study “Happy Gilmore,” about a man who expresses the ever-present struggle between man and society by swearing at golf balls.

Discussion includes Star Wars comparisions, talk of the increasing consistency of the Sandler universe, the proto-typical Sandler hero’s contradictory relationship to the film’s subaltern and fond reminesces of a pornographic nu metal disc one of the hosts had.

(There’s a lot of headphone bleed on this one. I tried to clean it up as best as I could.)
Aug 20, 201801:13:56
Episode 2 Billy Madison

Episode 2 Billy Madison

Perhaps the true start of the “Adam Sandler Cinematic Universe.” Widely regarded as a comedy classic by people on your school bus, does it hold up? Is Billy Madison a well-observed distillation of Sandler’s already popular stand-up and SNL stint, or a grotesque Frankenstein’s monster of different parts, later to be disassembled as raw material for the rest of Adam Sandler’s roles? Is it actually a commentary on the corrupt and ineffective inheritance system present in America’s business class? Will that *&$%ing chair ever stop squeaking?!
Aug 20, 201801:16:22
Episode 1: Going Overboard

Episode 1: Going Overboard

First episode, first Adam Sandler movie! A lively discussion of where this movie fits into the broader scope of Adam Sandler’s oeuvre. Is this even an Adam Sandler movie? Is this an “undiscovered gem?” Or something more similar to what your cat leaves you when you leave the house for too many days? There’s only one way to find out! Well, two if you count watching the movie yourself.
