068 - Tomer Kantor: El Salvador, Bitcoin & The IMF

Bitcoin, El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, Education, Dollarization, China, Singapore, IMF, Hope, Bond to Unbind.

Timothy Allen talks with Tomer Kantor.

I’ve got my final Bitcoin film festival despatch for you today.  I’m talking with the director of the film “Bond to Unbind. Bitcoin & El Salvador".

Tomer’s film is a deep dive into the fascinating story of contemporary El Salvador. Spearheaded by its phenomenally popular president Nayib Bukele,  El Salvador took the bold approach of not only passing the world’s first ever Bitcoin legal tender bill in 2021, but also of actively rallying against El Salvador's traditional relationship with the IMF, including ignoring their pleas to rescind the Bitcoin law.

In the words of Fortune magazine:

“The International Monetary Fund’s board urged El Salvador to strip Bitcoin of its status as legal currency due to its large risks, highlighting a major obstacle for the nation’s efforts to get a loan from the institution.”

Seemingly unperturbed by the IMF's passive aggressive threats, El Salvador’s so-called Volcano bonds, which are the governments Bitcoin-backed bonds also got regulatory approval at the end of 2023.

We discuss all this and more in the pod as well as a talking about both of our personal experiences visiting the country since the law was passed.

Enjoy the conversation.

In this conversation we talk about political risk management and the broader subject of geopolitics in the context of what is known as the Fourth Turning… listen on to find out what that is if you don’t already know.

We also talk about Free City vulnerabilities, monetary reset and dive into a few of the more prominent conspiracy theories involving world governance.

064 - Massimo Mazzone: Ciudad Morazán. The Blue-Collar Free City

Libertarianism, Ciudad Morazán, Honduras, ZEDEs, Legal Battles, Passion Projects, Morazán's Urban Plan, Blue-Collar Free City, Special Economic Zones.

Timothy Allen talks with Massimo Mazzone.

On today's show I’m talking with somebody who I consider to be one of the key individuals in the Free Cities Movement.  He is the incredibly successful entrepreneur who is both the brains and the finance behind Ciudad Morazán, Honduras’s so called blue-collar Free City.

Massimo is a life-long Libertarian who saw an opportunity to create a unique passion project when the Honduran government passed its ZEDE legislation back in 2013.  The ongoing result is Morazán, one of the world’s flagship Free City projects, but one that you probably know the least about since Massimo is not in the business of either self-promotion or promoting Morazán to potential investors.

Massimo’s dreams for Ciudad Morazán are big as you will hear in the conversation and I hope that you will also pick up on the genuine enthusiasm he has for both Honduras and its people. I came away from the discussion feeling very optimistic, even after hearing about Morazán's current legal battles which are somewhat stifling the project in the short term.

Enjoy the conversation.

Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto, Film, ARTE, Blockchains, Authoritarianism, CBDCs, Social Credit Scores, Cypherpunks, Privacy, Freedom, The Satoshi Mystery.

Timothy Allen talks with Rémi Forte.

Rémi is a film director who created what I would call one of the most influential Bitcoin films ever created. 'The Satoshi Mystery' has been viewed officially more than 8 million times.  It's a 6 part film series which, in my opinion explains the 'why?' of bitcoin incredibly well using interviews and documentary footage and a narrative revealed by an animated Satoshi Nakamoto character, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin.

I spoke with Remi at the Bitcoin Film Festival in Poland and we go into the importance of the cypherpunk origins of Bitcoin and why it is one of the most significant tools for freedom in these current times of burgeoning states, oppressive central bank digital currencies and social credit scores.

Enjoy the conversation.

062 - Tatiana Bugrova: Buying Land in Montelibero, Community & Montenegro

Moving to Montenegro, Montelibero Community, Libertarianism, Permaculture, Digital Nomadism, Lockdowns, Russia.

Timothy Allen talks with Tatiana Bugrova.

Tatiana is an active member of the Montelibero community who has bought a plot of land at 'MTL City', their fledging libertarian community site.

I caught up with her at the MTL clubhouse in Bar, Montenegro and we discussed her motivations for moving to Montenegro along with her hopes and expectations for the project.

If living in a libertarian community in Montenegro strikes a chord with you then I will point you to two other episodes from our Montelibero series.

Firstly, Episode 029 with Jose Birkin is a two hour deep dive into the community as a whole including an overview of their blockchain token system used for land ownership and community decision making.

Secondly, there is Episode 042 with Kosta & Albina, a digitally nomadic couple who have bought one of the newly built apartments in Montelibero. In a similar vein to this conversation with Tatiana, we discuss living nomadically and the draw to settle in a community of likeminded people.

Enjoy the conversation.

Timothy Allen talks with Vít Jedlička.

Vit is the founder and president of the Free Republic of Liberland, a new micronation formed in 2015 which claimed an uninhabited parcel of disputed land on the western bank of the Danube, between Croatia and Serbia.

This was my first time discussing the project on this podcast and, as a result my questions are quite rudimentary. Liberland’s story is absolutely fascinating and if this is your first exposure to it, you should definitely use this interview as a springboard to investigating the whole thing much, much further.

057 - Joe Quirk: Seasteading, Evolutionary Psychology & The Surveillance State

Seasteading, Flotels, Aquapreneurs, Evolutionary Psychology, Climate Change, Burning Man, Surveillance State, Distributed Problem Solving, Underwater Hotels.

Timothy Allen talks with Joe Quirk.

I really enjoy my conversations with Joe. The first time I met him was at our conference two years ago when I interviewed him for a film and it was instantly obvious that he is a great orator and overall extremely interesting guy.

This is a light hearted conversation about Seasteading. Joe is the president of the Seasteading Institute and extremely knowledgeable on the subject. I mean, from who else could I learn exciting new words such as flotel, coralcrete, aquapreneurs and seavilisation? If you listen to this podcast regularly, you’ll know how much I love new words.

However, this conversation is also about the human condition and how best to use our innate ingenuity to stay as free as we can as individuals.

I really enjoyed this discourse and in particular,  Joe’s takes on the world. He makes fascinating observations about this particular moment in history and I sincerely hope that they can help you understand your own path forward.

I wish you all a very wonderful Christmas if that’s something you are choosing to celebrate in the coming days.

Enjoy the conversation.

056 - Marthinus Grobler: Free City Design, Fiat Architecture & New Urbanism

Urban Design, Modernism, The Elite Class, Progressivism, Fiat Architecture, Central Planning, New Urbanism, Dubai & The Emirates.

Timothy Allen talks with Marthinus Grobler.

Todays’ show is an episode about architecture & Free City planning with Marthinus Grobler.

Marthinus is the chief architect at Tipolis, a company that I would describe as being at the forefront of planning, building and operating Free City projects throughout the globe.

I loved talking to Martinus.  Not least because he let me rant about one of my personal bugbears: Modernist architecture. However, during our discussion we also touch upon subjects such as urban design, progressivism, central planning, new urbanism, fiat architecture and I get Martinus’s opinion on what he thinks of the way that the design of the modern Emirates have evolved as a possible case study for urban planning in the future, something that has left me wondering whether skyscrapers and high rise buildings are a good idea at all.

Enjoy the conversation.

Abandoned villages, Agorism, Galicia, Spain, Free Commune of Panadexo, Governance.

Timothy Allen talks with Marnix Van Suylekom

I know that many of you, myself included, have secretly dreamt of buying an abandoned village and turning it into the utopia of your dreams.  Well today’s guest has embarked on one such project and I sat down with him recently in Prague….

Marnix Van Suylekom has a grand plan to apply Agorist principals to the rejuvenation of an abandoned hamlet in a picturesque valley in Galicia, Northern Spain.

In this conversation we discuss the lessons Marnix has learnt so far on his journey to source, buy and now begin renovating his abandoned village called Panadexo.

There are lots of great insights and info here on his bottom up approach to the project as well as some chat about life, raising kids and generally finding freedom in your life.

Island of Sark, Repopulation, Independence, Channel Islands, Move to Sark, Investment in Sark, Sark Masterplan.

Timothy Allen talks with Christopher Beaumont & Swen Lorenz.

On today's show I'm in discussion with two gentlemen involved in the self-governing island of Sark which is located just off the coast of Normandy.

Christopher Beaumont, the 23rd Seigneur of Sark and Swen Lorenz, a Sark immigrant who helped revitalize public interest in the island by creating the hugely successful 'Move To Sark' repopulation campaign, sat down with me in the Czech Republic and we talked everything Sark.

This is a fascinating conversation with these two Sarkees who are deeply involved in creating a long-term masterplan for this little-known Crown dependency. We discuss the past, present, and future of Sark in a thoroughly informative conversation.

Thanks to Christopher and Swen for taking the time to not only speak to me on the podcast, but also for presenting the project to the Free Cities audience at our annual conference.

Timothy Allen talks with Adam Bartha.

Today I’m releasing a conversation that I recorded just over 6 months ago.  It's worth noting that deciding which show to air each week is by no means an exact science and this episode has been near the top of my list for many weeks but it just kept getting bumped aside by interviews that had content that was more time sensitive. At any one time I have a pool of episodes to choose from since we record all our podcasts in person in batches at different events and gatherings that I attend.

So, as you are listening to this, bear in mind that the conversation was recorded in April. Nevertheless, there are still plenty of timeless insights and lots of up to date information plus some interesting predictions about the economy that turned out to be quite prophetic.

My guest is Adam Bartha who is the director at Epicenter, The European Policy Information Center which is part if the Institute of Economic Affairs.

As a gentleman who roams the political hallways of Brussels, I had a lot of questions for Adam about the E.U. and international politics in general which is something that both fascinates and infuriates me.  Alongside that we discuss topics such as freedom, social media, Brexit, open borders, city gentrification,  inflation and the impending battle between Bitcoin and CBDCs.

Enjoy the conversation.

050 - Titus Gebel: Free Private Cities Book Update

Timothy Allen talks with Titus Gebel.

Today we have Titus Gebel back on the show.  This time we’re talking about the update to his classic book ‘Free Private Cities: Making Governments Compete for You’.

What’s new?  What’s gone and what lessons have we learnt since the last edition was published just over 5 years ago.

Of particular interest to me were questions that I had about the preferred architecture and design of Free Private Cities along with culture, ethics and a run down of the main innovations that have emerged since the last book.

We end by discussing the COVID pandemic and how Titus predicts that a Free Private City operator would respond to something similar in the future.

If you’re interested in the other 2 podcasts I’ve done with Titus, Try episode 036 for a deep dive into medieval city states and episode 034 for a broader discussion about the movement in general.

049 - Natalie Danelishen: Twitter, Homeschooling & Ending the Fed

Timothy Allen talks with Natalie Danelishen.

This week on the podcast I’ve got another episode for you from Liberty In Our Lifetime and it's a light hearted chat I had with one of the newest additions to the Free Cities Foundation's team, Natalie Danelishen.

I need to confess something before you listen. When we originally arranged to record this conversation a few weeks ago, the only free slot Natalie had in her busy conference schedule was the 2 hour window immediately after she arrived in Prague, so she ended up coming directly to my studio from the airport and from, what had turned out to be a rather long and sleepless 28 hour journey from the USA.

Between the bouts of propping her eyes open with matchsticks, we did eventually manage to home in on a number of topics in our chat.  From Ron Paul, the Mises Institute and her mission to end the Fed, to homeschooling, inflation and how to win on Elon’s new Twitter platform when, like her you’re trying to spread ideas of freedom and liberty.

It was lucky for me that Natalie’s such a good sport.  If truth be told, most other people I know wouldn’t have been so polite on that little sleep, so thanks for coming on and I look forward to part two some time in the not to distant future.

Lastly, just to remind you all that the Free Cities Foundation has published three new books in the last few weeks.  There’s an updated version of Titus Gebel’s book Free Private Cities that has six new chapters including updates and lessons learnt from the movement so far. There is also Alex Voss’s new book Strategies for Liberty: Free Cities and Bitcoin and finally, Calvin Dukes's Entrepreneurial Communitites - An alternative to the State.

All of these books are a fantastic read and can be find on our website and Amazon.

Enjoy the conversation.

048 - Mason: Free Cities at Sea, Atlas Island & Seasteading

048 - Mason: Free Cities at Sea, Atlas Island & Seasteading

Timothy Allen talks with Mason Leschyna.

Today I have the first episode recorded at 'Liberty in Our Lifetime' 2024.

I had a number of conversations on my bucket list for the conference and one of those was speaking to somebody about Seasteading, something that I was fortunate enough to do on two separate occasions. One of those was with Joe Quirk, the President of the Seasteading Institute and the other was with today's guest Mason Leschyna, the brains behind Atlas Island, a project planning to create sovereign cities at sea.

Now, I feel that I should pre-empt this show with a small plea to please forgive me for thinking out loud a fair bit on this episode.  Those of you that follow the pod will know that my preferred style of investigation is very much to find out about things in real life from real people, something that I believe allows you the listener to join me as I work this stuff out in real time.  So, if you’re a hardened Seasteader then there may not be anything new for you here, but if, like me you had a very specific set of beliefs about the viability of Free Cities in the ocean then I invite you to join me as I get me mind well and truly educated.

Mason is a great ambassador for both Seasteading and the Free Cities movement as a whole and I can guarantee you that this is the first conversation of many as this project evolves in the coming months and years.

Enjoy the conversation.

047 - Nik Oraevsky: Bitcoin Predictions, CBDCs & Global Citizenship

Timothy Allen talks with Nik Oraevsky.

Today I have a fascinating show for you about monetary and personal sovereignty with Bitcoin Reserve CEO, Nik Oraevsky.

Nik wasn’t always a Bitcoin OG but his background in traditional finance has helped him to navigate the perilous regulatory environment surrounding the foundation and running of a Bitcoin company.  As a result he has excellent insights into the emerging world of cryptocurrency and freedom tech and indeed how to best isolate yourself from the barriers to freedom that he sees coming.

In this conversation we discuss, Bitcoin regulation, the war on cash, the impending bifurcated economy, carbon scores and CBDCs, universal basic income, A.I., prepping, digital nomadism, global citizenship, emerging governance models… and I get to ask an expert in the field:

”Is Bitcoin necessary for a Free City to thrive?"

Spoiler alert: Nik’s answer might not be what you expect.

Enjoy the conversation.

046 - Daniel Prince: Choosing a Parallel Life, Self-Directed Education & Bitcoin

Timothy Allen talks with Daniel Prince.

Todays guest on the show is the long time Bitcoiner and friend of the Free Cities Foundation Daniel Prince.

Daniel is the host of the Once Bitten Podcast which is one of the biggest and best known in the Bitcoin space. He is also going to be the MC at our Free Cities conference this year so I thought it would be a good idea to drop an episode in which I got to pick his brains for a couple of hours before you all get to meet him in person in Prague next week.

In this episode we dive down a number of rabbit holes, but most notably we discuss the education system, vitamins, niacin, homeschooling, unschooling, nutrition and since we are both family men, there’s also a fair bit of banter on the subject of bringing up well adjusted kids and travelling with your family.

Enjoy the episode.

045 - Patrick Lamson-Hall & Nuria Forques: Designing a Free City from Scratch, Dreamers vs Pragmatists & The Future of Urban Planning

Timothy Allen talks with Patrick Lamson Hall and Nuria Forques.

Patrick and Nuria are a husband-and-wife team whose firm, 'Fitted Projects,' was commissioned to design the Honduran ZEDE community of Ciudad Morazán, the second ZEDE established in Honduras after Próspera. While Próspera primarily focused on technological innovation and connecting Honduras with international business, Morazán was designed as more of a 'blue-collar ZEDE,' targeting working-class and middle-class residents primarily from Honduras.

Patrick and Nuria have much to share about the design, implementation, and future of Free City projects. It was phenomenal to sit down with two individuals who possess such in-depth, hands-on experience in manifesting these innovative ideas in real life.

This conversation was recorded during the 'New Cities & Network States' weekend at Zuzalu, the so-called pop-up city gathering in Montenegro. With many of the talks and presentations fresh in our minds, we ended up dissecting various projects within the Free Cities ecosystem and discussed how the movement as a whole might best progress in the coming years.

044 - Josh & Zach Harvey: Homesteading, Low Time Preference & Moving to Portugal

Timothy Allen talks with Josh & Zach Harvey.

Today's show is a conversation I had in Portugal with a couple of Bitcoin OGs by the names of Josh and Zack Harvey.

The two brothers were responsible for creating the first ever prototype bitcoin ATM way back in 2013, an endeavour that has given rise to their market leading company Lamassu, currently supplying Bitcoin ATMs all over the globe.

More recently they have embarked on a inspiring regenerative agriculture project in their adoptive country of Portugal and this conversation helps to reveal some of their motivations and inspirations for not only moving across the world to a foreign country but also for immersing themselves in an experimental farming project. Something that is made all the more unusual by the fact that neither have any previous experience in that field at all.
There’s plenty of advice here if you are thinking about embarking on a food sovereignty project of your own or moving to Portugal which as you will hear has many benefits for those looking to move countries in search of a better life.

Enjoy the conversation.

043 - Pavol Lupták: Global Opportunists, Parallel Societies & Crypto Anarchy

043 - Pavol Lupták: Global Opportunists, Parallel Societies & Crypto Anarchy

Timothy Allen talks with Pavol Lupták.

Pavol is someone who I’ve been trying to talk to for quite a while… so many people have mentioned his name to me but he had thus far proved to be a pretty elusive guy on account of the fact that he is (amongst other things) a perpetual traveller.  Fortunately for me I bumped into him at BTC Prague where his company Liberation Travel had a stand next to the Free Cities Bureau, and I managed to sit down with him for a couple of hours to delve a bit deeper into his fascinating life.

Pavol has been involved in the crypto anarchy scene in Prague for many years.  As the founder of both an ethical hacking IT security company and Prague’s Paralelni Polis, arguably one of the world’s most infamous Bitcoin and crypto anarchy hubs, he has a unique perspective on the ins and outs of creating parallel systems and opting out of mainstream structures.

In fact Liberation Travel’s sole purpose is to help freedom minded people to leave oppressive situations and relocate to a better jurisdiction or become what Pavol calls a ‘Global opportunist’.

Interestingly, something I didn’t know before this conversation was that Pavol has been visiting intentional communities and Free Cities projects for quite some time already, conducting personal research on different  governance models.    Look out for a couple of interesting projects mentioned in this conversation that I’d never heard of before and don’t forget that you can meet Pavol and all our other speakers in person in Prague in few weeks time at 'Liberty in Our Lifetime'.

042 - Kosta Korenkov & Albina Tokarchuk: Buying an Apartment in Montelibero, 10 Years as a Digital Nomad & Russian Libertarians

Timothy Allen talks with Kosta Korenkov & Albina Tokarchuk.

This week's show comes from Montelibero which is a fascinating project that resides firmly within the ‘intentional community’ band of the Free Cities spectrum.  For the most part, comprised of Russian libertarians, Montelibero has a tight knit community with land and buildings in Montenegro as well as its own currency and decentralised governance system.

If you want to take a deeper dive into the project you can check out our free communities directory at free-communities.org or pop on over to episode 29 of this podcast for a 3hr conversation with one of Montelibero's longer standing members.

Back to today and I am speaking to a digitally nomadic couple who have taken the plunge and bought one of the newly constructed apartments in the so called 'MTL City' which is Montelibero’s initial block of building land.

Kosta Korenkov & Albina Tokarchuk have been digital nomads for over 10 years and this conversation is not only an interesting look into the motivations of people who choose to join an intentional community but also a fascinating peek into the lives of two traveling software developers.

We discuss the process of buying property in Montelibero, as well as setting up with visas, bank accounts and internet along with Kosta and Albina’s tips for setting yourself up as a digital nomad…  What are the best jobs to get and where are the best countries to base yourself?

All in all this was an excellent conversation full of useful information and inspiration that might help you to vote with your feet and find the jurisdiction that will be best for you.

Enjoy the conversation.

041 - Niko Laamanen: Leaderless Organisations, Moving to Madeira & Bitcoin Adoption

Timothy Allen talks with Niko Laamanen.

This week it's another dispatch from my recent visit to BTC Prague. My guest is Niko Laamanen, a Finnish gentleman who left an unfulfilling life as a construction engineer to start a publishing house specialising in the dissemination of content promoting ideas of freedom and liberty in all its myriad forms, or in Niko’s own words, “Stuff you don’t really learn at school but maybe you should.”

Konsensus Network, as it is called, is a project that was born out of the emerging Bitcoin movement and has grown and evolved in a way characterised by the traits of what is known as a 'starfish organization', which is essentially, a leaderless, open-source network of collaborators... more on that, of course, from Niko in our conversation along with discussions about digital nomadism, ‘escaping the matrix,’ the importance of books and content curation, as well as Niko’s views on the progress of worldwide Bitcoin adoption and why he chose to move to the Portuguese island of Madeira, which has become somewhat of a Bitcoiner hotspot in recent times.

040 - Casey Given: Heterodox Thought Leaders, Free Cities PR & Young Voices

Timothy Allen talks with Casey Given.

Casey is the president and executive director of ‘Young Voices’ which is a non profit agency that aims to cultivate the next generation of libertarian thought leaders in policy, journalism, and academia, or as Casey himself describes it, "A talent agency for heterodox thinkers".

Casey has an interesting connection with the Free Cities movement through his undergrad student days and UC Berkley where he hosted a number of prominent seasteaders at the university's libertarian club which he founded.

In this conversation we discuss Young Voices’s strategy for creating change in the media, both the legacy version and the new media landscape of soundbites and social influencers.  I’m also lucky enough to get some excellent advice from Casey on the best way to get the Free Cities narrative out there in the mainstream.

All in all this is a grreat conversation if, like me, you are sincerely interested in having a direct impact on hearts and minds.  Many thanks to Casey for being so candid and accommodating with his time.

Enjoy the conversation.

039 - Rahim Taghizadegan: Bitcoin Citadels, Geopolitics & CBDCs

Timothy Allen talks with Rahim Taghizadegan.

Today on the pod I have for you a very interesting conversation I had at BTC Prague with the Free Cities Foundation’s chief economist Rahim Taghizadegan.

Rahim is an Austrian economist who is actually from Austria, which was a first for me, but he is also a physicist (specialization in nuclear physics and complex systems), philosopher, investor and entrepreneur who has written more than a dozen books.

In this conversation we begin by investigating the historical significance of citadels and in particular their modern day incarnation as the Bitcoin citadel meme.

From here we take a tour through many topics such as government inefficiencies, military technology, geopolitics, CBDCs and the collapse of the fiat system.

All in all, I think that the whole discussion could be summed up quite nicely with Rahim’s statement ‘How not to live in a dystopian world'.

Enjoy the conversation.

038 - Raphaël Lima: Radical Ideas, Brazilian Free Cities & Digital Nomadism

Timothy Allen talks with Raphaël Lima.

Today we have a conversation with one of our FCF esteemed ambassadors by the name of Raphael Lima.  Raphael is what I would call a Libertarian Influencer.  In his home country of Brazil, his daily youtube show “Ideias Radicais” has over 650k subscribers. He is also the founder of both the Free Market Institute in Brazil and settee.io which is a company that in their own words 'helps our customers to live and do business without borders’... in other words they help people move around the globe to jurisdictions that treat them better.

In our discussion we touch upon all aspects of Raphaël’s work in promoting the ideas of Libertarianism, anarcho-capitalism and Free Cities.  From the importance of getting your ideas out there at a grass roots level by telling relatable stories to the common person, to having a robust plan to bring ideas of liberty in to the political mainstream in Brazil, a country which, I have heard from a number of people recently, currently houses the biggest Libertarian movement in the world.

This is one for the digital nomads amongst you as well since I get to dive into Raphaël's list of top places to relocate to in 2023.

Enjoy the conversation.

034 - Titus Gebel: Breaking the Political Cycle

Timothy Allen talks with Titus Gebel.

It's another of my discussions from Montenegro again this week and this time it’s part one of two conversations I had with none other than the founder and president of the Free Cities Foundation himself,  Titus Gebel.

Now, since most of you will know who Titus is I will keep this intro brief. Obviously he has done many interviews before so I tried my best to keep this conversation away from the usual Free Private Cities talking points and delve a little deeper into the history of different city state models and their modern day incarnations.  I also got to probe a little into Titus’s own history and motivations as well as some of his predictions for the future of the idea that government should be a service.

We recorded together on two separate occasions and part 2 of this conversation will be a deep dive into medieval city states which is a discussion I’ve been pining to have for many months now, so look out for that one over the next few weeks.

Enjoy the conversation.

033 - David D. Friedman: Asteroid Colonies, Medieval Cooking & Romani Law

Timothy Allen talks with David Friedman.

Today's guest needs no introduction…  He is an esteemed economist, legal scholar and libertarian thinker who has for many, redefined their understanding of individual liberty and the dynamics of human society.

But did you know he was also a connoisseur of medieval cooking? Well, you’re about to find our as I sit down for an hour with David Friedman.

As you would expect our conversation makes many twists and turns and we cover a fair bit of ground.

From the intricacies of Romani legal codes and the judicial system in 10th century Iceland to the conversational faux pas one might encounter in a 21st century Bardic circle and even, 'What are the most feasible governance models that could be employed on an asteroid colony?'.

Plus, as you will hear, David is quite candid when it comes to expressing his concerns with the Free Cities model.

This podcast was recorded in  a room full of people, so listen out for cameos by David’s daughter Rebecca and FCF’s Peter Young.

Enjoy the conversation.

032 - Andreas Baumgartner: Negotiating With Governments, Lifestyle Zones & Digital Nomadism

Timothy Allen talks with Andreas Baumgartner.

We’re back in Montenegro again this week with a conversation I recorded at the so-called pop up city of Zuzalu.

I’m talking with a gentleman who has very deep ties to the Free Cities movement, working as he does in the economic development space.   His name is Andreas Baumgartner and he has spent the last 25 years working in the political and legal side of the space with the likes of the Metis Institute, Tipolis and Praxis to name but a few.

Andreas has a wealth of practical knowledge on the nuts and bolts of actually negotiating with governments during the establishment and running of Special Economic Zones and semi autonomous  jurastictions etc which is somewhat of a rare occurrence in my experience due to the emerging nature of the whole Free Cities ecosystem

In our conversation he is keen to emphasise the importance of trying to work with host governments and highlights the strategies he has learnt to employ when approaching them as well as commenting on the current limitations faced by the movement with particular regards to the process of incentivising different demographics to move to new jurisdictions.

This is a fascinating and informative discussion. The first of many I hope as this movement continues to evolve.   Andreas doesn’t just talk the talk, he very much walks the walk as well and I appreciate that about him very much.

Enjoy the conversation.

031 - Thomas Walker-Werth: Free City Planning, Frontier Governance & Colonising Outer Space

Timothy Allen talks with Thomas Walker-Werth.

Today’s show was one of my favourite interviews from our recent trip to LibertyCon in Lisbon. Thomas is an associate editor at The Objective Standard, and as a former town planner in the UK he has much to say about the designing and organising of Free Cities.

In this conversation, we take a deep dive into the reality of what its actually like planning towns as well as making some predictions about the prospect of designing places to live in outer space, particularly mars. Thomas has uniquely informed opinions on the morality and practice of governance in these future frontiers which, prior to our conversation was not something I had ever thought about before.

Other topics covered include: New urbanism, 15 minute cities, post modernism, flying cars, environmentalism, collectivism and we discuss the role that Elon Musk might play in the future of alternative governance models.

Enjoy the conversation.

029 - Jose Birkin: Montelibero, Libertarian Governance & Tokenomics

Timothy Allen talks with Montelibero community member Jose Birkin.

This conversation was my first in Montenegro within the Montelibero community.

Montelibero is an intentional community of mostly Russian speaking libertarians that appears in our
free communities directory.  Myself and Peter Young traveled there last month on a fact finding mission to see what kind of progress is being made in their quest to become 'a role model of liberty in practice in Montenegro'.

Due to it’s decentralised nature, there are no spokespeople as such who can speak on behalf of the community as a whole but one individual who goes by the name of Jose Birkin (not his real name of course) stepped up to answer my questions about the ins and outs of running a start-up intentional community such as this.

A quick word of warning before you dive in.  For an hour or so we ended up talking quite intensely about the blockchain tokenomics system that the community uses to transact internally, track ownership of land titles and make community decisions etc, and this part of the conversation may become a little tedious for some of you since I was not of the opinion that one needs to use a blockchain in this situation. As a result I did rather labour the point somewhat in order to get the whole thing straight in my head.   Long and short of it is…. whilst I still think that their solution is not necessarily a good long term one, I now understand their reasons why they chose it.

Other than that we talk about the history of the community, the pros and cons of building in Montenegro and how the community functions without having any one person in charge. I also get to ask the question “Who will build the roads?”  which is always a pleasure, so look out for that one and look out also in the future for more interviews that I conducted whilst I was there with further residents of Montelibero who have either bought land or property there.

Montelibero is an exciting experiment and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and I would like to offer another big thank you to the community who welcomed us with open arms during our time in the country.

Enjoy the conversation.

024 - Matt & Terry Kibbe: Liberty & The New Media Landscape

024 - Matt & Terry Kibbe: Liberty & The New Media Landscape

Timothy Allen talks with Matt & Terry Kibbe.

Matt and Terry Kibbe are the founders of ‘Free the People' which is an educational foundation charged with the mission of tuning in the next generation to the core values of personal liberty and peaceful cooperation.

I met them both in Lisbon where they were speaking at LibertyCon and were it not for both of our incredibly strict schedules over that weekend I would have happily spoken to them for much longer since they have such a wealth of experience in the worlds of both legacy and new media.

In our conversation we mainly discuss the current media landscape and what might be the best tools and strategies for communicating our message to the hearts and minds of people in today’s highly volatile world.

The marketplace of ideas has never been more universally accessible than it is at this time in history and Terry and Matt are most certainly amongst those at the sharp end of the wedge when it comes to communicating ideas of Liberty and freedom.

021 - Nikos Sotirakopoulos: Life is Not Suffering, Culture Wars & Ayn Rand

Timothy Allen talks with Nikos Sotirakopoulos

Nikos is an author, senior lecturer in social sciences at York St John Universtity and director of the European Ayn Rand Institute.

Now, i have a problem with this conversation… namely that it is too short… Nikos is a busy man and I had a strict hour with him in Warsaw.  However we managed to get through a fair bit in that hour…. brutalist architecture , collectivism vs individualism, the culture wars, Ayn Rand's philosophy, martial arts, what Jordan Peterson gets wrong, Joe Rogan and the medium of podcasting, political correctness and anti capitalism.. to name but a few of the subjects covered.

Nikos is an excellent orator…  this kind of conversation leaves me not only well informed but also rejuvenated and I hope that you get to have the same experience too.

Enjoy the conversation.

00:10 Introduction to this episode. 05:40 Why I like Brutalist Architecture. 7:40 Does collectivism have a place at any scale? 13:37 Why is the public sphere so toxic?. 19:37 Why do political parties end up not standing for anything? 22:16 Is tribalism a political strategy or innate? 27:09 Socialism and the morality of sacrifice. 32:22 Ayn Rand's philosophy 101. 36:12 The difference between happiness and meaning. 41:34 What is enthusiam? 47:43 The power of discussion. 52:52 Why podcasting is a radical revolutionary way of passing ideas? 56:21 Lifestyle Activism vs. The New Left. 1:02:58 Let’s disagree on issues but agree on truth.
