Ep. 9 (Season 4) | Running through Mile 21 as an Eagle, feat. Brody Whetzel and Caroline Driscoll

This week, hosts Elizabeth and Kathy speak with two guests, Brody Whetzel and Caroline Driscoll. Brody is a sophomore from Salem, Ore. studying transformative education and applied psychology and human development, while Caroline is a freshman from Milton, Mass. studying communication and economics. Brody will be running the 128th Boston Marathon in support of the Special Olympics Massachusetts, an organization that engages kids with intellectual disabilities in sports activities. Caroline will be running the marathon in support of Martin W. Richard Charitable Foundation, an organization that promotes sportsmanship, inclusion, kindness, and peace through civic action community programs.

Ep. 8 (Season 4) | Regaining Masti’s Recognition at ALC Showdown 2024, feat. Suhani Gupta and Amogh Sriranga

This week, hosts Elizabeth and Kathy speak with Suhani Gupta and Amogh Sriranga, the co-captains of the Masti dance team at Boston College. Suhani is a sophomore studying human centered engineering, while Amogh is a junior studying economics with a minor in finance. Masti, which was established in 2003, is BC’s only Bollywood Fusion dance team. The group competes annually in the AHANA Leadership Council’s Showdown competition. Last year, the group won first place at Showdown and chose to donate their winnings to South Asian Americans Leading Together, a charity that strives to achieve racial justice for South Asian people in the United States. This year, the group performed at the annual SASA Culture Show, where they demonstrated their energetic and unapologetically cultural routines.

Since its establishment in 1990, the McMullen Museum focuses on faculty research across all disciplines and exhibits a diverse range of artistic forms. The museum hosts various events throughout the year and rotates through unique exhibits. Past exhibitions include the Gateway to Himalayan Art, Landscape of Memory: Seven Installations from the Barjeel Art Foundation, and American Alternative Comics.

Next, they speak with Katie Diasti, founder and CEO of Viv for Your V, a feminine care company designed to protect the environment with eco-friendly products. Finally, Kathy and Elizabeth speak with Matthew Barron, co-founder and CEO at Cariina, and Pedro de Almeida, co-founder and CTO at Cariina. Cariina is an online management system for schools with a focus in the transportation, extracurricular, and attendance sectors.

This week, host Kathy speaks with Benedita Zalabantu, a junior studying political science and international studies. She is currently a UGBC student representative, helping voice BC student opinions and advocating for improvements in campus policies, facilities, and services. She is also a poet and recites her experiences as a Black woman in the United States. Her poetry performances can be found on Vimeo under the channel name ‘The Telling Room,’ a nonprofit writing center for young adults in her hometown, Portland, Maine. She also presented her work at various on-campus events, including last year’s “Living In Color: Spoken Word Poetry Night” event that highlighted Black poets at BC.

This week, hosts Elizabeth and Kathy speak with Ella O'Kelly-Lynch and Ryan O’Connor, two members of The Common Tones of Boston College. Ella, a senior studying Economics and Public Health, serves as the president of the group, overseeing general club operations such as rehearsal times and concert dates. Ryan, a junior studying Political Science, History, and Music, is the Tones’ music director, overseeing rehearsal facilitation and song arrangement.

The Tones are BC’s first and only service-based a cappella group. This past school year, the group was featured in various on-campus performances, including Acapalooza, their annual Fall Cafe, and CAB’s Art Showcase. Most recently, their “Carol of the Tones” TikTok attracted 73 million views and the attention of the Grammys’ TikTok account, who commented asking the group to create a mashup of the songs nominated for Song of the Year.

She was also an undergraduate research fellow for the Boston College English Department. At BC, she studied the 19th century feminist movement. Christine graduated from BC in 2023 with a degree in philosophy and English literature, and will be pursuing a J.D. from BC Law this fall.

She recently wrote a magazine article for The Heights called “Building a Home Away From Home: An Exchange Student’s Guide to Living with a Roommate,” in which she highlighted her experience moving from England to Boston, Mass., where she had to adjust to an entirely new living environment. She also provided tips for fellow and incoming exchange students on ways to adapt to living with a roommate in communal housing at BC. She is currently studying theology.

This week, host Elizabeth speaks with Brian Taff, co-anchor of Action News at 4 p.m. and anchor of Action News at 6 p.m. in Philadelphia. After earning a degree in communication from Boston College, Taff began his journalism career at WVII-TV in Maine and later became a reporter and anchor at Capital News 9 in Albany. He later became editor and anchor of the news show Capital Tonight, where he won the Associated Press Award for Best Interview two years in a row. His journalism roles have sent him on journeys around the world, including trips to Rome to cover the election of the Pope and to the White House to interview former president Barack Obama.

Kelly is best known for his role as the co-host of What Not to Wear, TLC’s longest-running prime time reality show. He appeared in more than 300 episodes of What Not to Wear between 2003 and 2013, with over one million people tuning in to the popular makeover program every week for 10 years. Since then, he has continued to work as an entrepreneur and private style consultant and has published several books. He was also a co-host on The Chew from 2011 through 2018 and won an Emmy for his role on the show. Before becoming a household name, Kelly received a master’s degree in Journalism from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree in Communications from Boston College.

She is majoring in management and leadership and minoring in international studies and has been a columnist since her freshman year at BC. She recently wrote a piece titled “A Letter to My Freshman Year Self: Senior Year, Post-COVID Edition,” highlighting the unique experience of beginning college from behind a screen. In the episode, Liv quotes Theodore Roosevelt in saying, “comparison is the thief of joy.” She applies this mindset to things like social media and job recruitment, which require confidence in one’s self and personal milestones, not anyone else’s.

Kotzen, MCAS ’24, studies biology and classical studies on the pre-med track and previously served as the policy coordinator for UGBC’s Council for Students with Disabilities and as the Student Assembly Intersectionality Committee chairperson. Heckelman, LSEHD ’25, studies applied psychology and political science and served as the director of Student Initiatives for UGBC before becoming vice president.

Christie is currently the vice president of Haitian Association, a Black Women Matter retreat co-leader from the Women’s Center, and the AHANA+ Legacy Programmer for ALC.

She has been inspired by MLK since childhood and is committed to living out his legacy after college. Tune in to hear about how Christie is combining her interests in medicine and advocacy to pursue a career as an obstetrician. She will focus her career on quality care for low-income families, combating the higher birth mortality rates for Black mothers as opposed to white mothers in the U.S., and shedding light on high childbirth mortality rates in Haiti.

This week, hosts Isabella and Elizabeth speak with Nicole Eaton, an associate professor in the History Department with an interest in Soviet history, World War II, and the inner workings and cultures of the European cities whose urban spaces were redesigned during wartime. On March 14th, she released her new book, German Blood, Slavic Soil, which examines how Königsberg, a 700-year-old German port city, became one of Hitler’s most significant military bases, only to become known as Kaliningrad in 1945 and fall under Stalin’s regime. Professor Eaton describes the work as “a history of everyday life, violence, occupation, and urban transformation of one city on the Eastern Front before, during, and after the Second World War.” 

Tune in to learn about Professor Eaton’s extensive research into German and Soviet history, the complex connections between rulers, and how one city can be a lens through which we can better understand the rise and fall of empires.

Dr. Altindis' recent publication concluded that a gut microbe may contribute to developing type 1 diabetes.

In this episode, Dr. Altindis discusses the effects of the microbe “parabacteroides distasonis” and its relationship with type 1 diabetes, his experiences testing the microbe in clinical trials, and the increasing rate of type 1 diabetes diagnoses in the future.
