The Science of Behavioural Change
In this episode Mat chats with Dr Dalton Combs about the science of behavioural change, its influence in the digital space (such as social media), and how that expertise can be used for good (rather than evil).
He has channeled his passion for understanding the causes and consequences of human behaviour as a tech startup founder applying cutting-edge neuroscience thorough his company, Temper - a business committed to helping people master their metabolism.
Dalton is the real deal, first as a neuroeconomics Ph.D. researcher at the University of Southern California, and then as the author of ‘Digital Behavioral Design’.
In this fascinating conversation, Dalton explains how Temper harnesses the unrivalled understanding of the brain, the future of technology, and the interaction between the two. He offers some simple, free practices that anyone on the planet can employ immediately, anywhere, anytime.
On The Unleashing Potential Podcast, we interview progressive individuals who are unleashing their potential on the world around them. We take a deep dive on how they got to where they are, what lessons they have learned along the way, and how their experiences can impact us all.
If you’re ready to shift your thinking, to think of yourself as a collection of habits, and to discover how you can change some of the automatic behaviours you have, you know what to do! Open your mind, plug in, and be ready to be confronted.
And as always, if you like it, feel free to share it.
Solving Insecurity
In this episode Mat chats with Jaemin Frazer, the founder of The Insecurity Project and a coach who specialises in helping entrepreneurs, leaders, and business owners eradicate insecurity so they can show up to life unhindered by doubt, fear, and self-limiting beliefs.
This conversation led to some profound insights being shared by Jaemin about how underneath all patterns of human dysfunction lies limiting and disempowering beliefs about ourselves.
Jaemin walked step-by-step through why he believes insecurity is a soluble problem and that our fears about not being good enough, not being worthy of love or acceptance or somehow being inadequate cause us to either run or hide so that we are never ‘found out’.
He also took a mini-dive on the 7 essential practices for overcoming insecurity from his book, Unhindered. The reality is, opinions are the lowest form of not knowing anything, and running or hiding from insecurities always leads us to live in a way that is completely separated from the life we’d hope for.
On The Unleashing Potential Podcast, we interview progressive individuals who are unleashing their potential on the world around them. We take a deep dive on how they got to where they are, what lessons they have learned along the way, and how their experiences can impact us all.
This episode feels a little bit special.
Put your limiting beliefs and prejudices to one side, plug in and be ready to be confronted.
And as always, if you like it, feel free to share it.
Be Happier; Channel Your Inner Child
A child can find the purest of joy in just a puddle of water whereas most adults see it as something to ‘avoid’...
In this episode, Mat chats with Dr. Hitu Jugessur from Canada and learns how The Art Of Living Foundation has helped over 200 million people around the world reduce stress, increase their energy and live happier life.
Dr. Jugessur has spent a lot of time in many war-torn parts of Africa supporting the women and children left behind. It is her observation that whilst the situations may be different from those in the Western world, the personal struggles remain the same.
Increased anxiety, depression, suicide, and domestic violence are symptoms of a mental health epidemic that presents itself across the globe, regardless of geography or socioeconomic status.
The good news is that we can all be united by (re)connection with ourselves and those around us. Mindfulness can be a powerful daily intervention and lifestyle. Breathwork and meditation are available to us all and, once experienced, have the power to help us feel happier and be healthier.
On The Unleashing Potential Podcast, we interview progressive individuals who are unleashing their potential on the world around them. We take a deep dive on how they got to where they are, what lessons they have learned along the way, and how their experiences can impact us all.
Dr. Jugessur has a knack for lowering any stigmas or prejudices that exist around the subject of spirituality. In fact, there is a wonderfully simple analogy used to explain the distinction between religion and spirituality. It involves a banana…
So get ready to peel back the layers of adulthood and learn to channel your inner child for a happier and healthier life.
As always, if you like it, feel free to share it.
Taking Control Of Your Limiting Beliefs
In this episode Mat chats with Bianca Thomas, a clinical mental health counselor specialising in cognitive behavioral therapy and a life coach who helps ambitious people uncover limiting beliefs holding them back from their true potential.
This is a wonderfully candid conversation where Bianca offered a level of vulnerability that is rare in today's society.
As a gay, Middle Eastern woman Bianca has an extensive background in helping others understand and embrace their own identity, live in alignment with their highest values, change their limiting beliefs and create radical transformations in their lives.
Mat and Bianca walked what Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is and how she has used it to reconcile her own journey of feeling like the black sheep of the family growing up, struggling to find her place in the world and, more recently, her relationship with her family when they discovered that she was gay.
Bianca was generous with sharing how she helps her clients; approaches such as reciprocal determinism, thought recording and so much more. She demonstrates the power of CBT techniques for anybody on the planet who is willing to “get in the mud a little and dig around”.
On The Unleashing Potential Podcast, we interview progressive individuals who are unleashing their potential on the world around them. We take a deep dive on how they got to where they are, what lessons they have learned along the way and how their experiences can impact us all.
Bianca is the co-founder of a hugley successful podcast, Evolve Ventures which is listened to in over 50 countries. If you like what you hear in this episode then you’ll love Bianca’s conversions where she and her co-host, Emilia Smith take state-of-the-art research, experience, and data-backed methodologies to evolve the old version of themselves.
Kick back, plug yourself in and enjoy! And as always, if you like it, feel free to share it.
How To Reverse Engineer A Growth Mindset
In this episode Mat chats with Anne O’Neil, a former All-American Division 1 Basketball Player turned management consultant and growth mindset expert.
There’s no doubt that Anne’s successful sporting career transferred into her career in leadership, performance psychology, and organisational performance. In this conversation, she breaks down how she applies the same concepts of reverse engineering to her business life as she did when she was 13 years old and being drafted in the WNBA.
It’s this devotion to a ‘big’ goal, and breaking it down into bite-sized pieces that afford the opportunity for ‘mini wins’ along the way and keep the intrinsic motivation levels pumping. As you’ll hear, Anne is the real deal and has continued to employ these methods throughout her life to great success.
Mat and Anne also talked about viewing the world in 3D and the associated power of making aspects of your life bigger than yourself - attaching a higher purpose to even mundane activities. The example of paying for calls at Lifeline Australia for the delegates of The Impact Project served as the perfect example of this.
On The Unleashing Potential Podcast, we interview progressive individuals who are unleashing their potential on the world around them. We take a deep dive on how they got to where they are, what lessons they have learned along the way and how their experiences can impact us all.
If you want to learn how to consistently default to a growth mindset (versus the more common fixed mindset) then this episode is for you. Whether you’re looking for a huge transformation or simply seeking to fine-tune the dials, this is the liquorice allsorts episode - something for everyone.
And as always, if you like it, feel free to share it.
Pioneering Conscious Leadership
In this episode Mat chats with Neil Seligman about the evolution of leadership and how conscious companies are outperforming the competition. Neil is a London-based mindfulness advocate and conscious leadership pioneer who has authored two books; 100 Mindfulness Meditations and Conscious Leadership.
In his late twenties, Neil had a moment of insight when he decided to abandon his career as a Barrister (Trial Lawyer) and set off in a new direction. It has taken a while but he now feels fully aligned in his work. He loves inspiring people to make powerful decisions for themselves and to take care of their wellbeing and happiness along the way.
On The Unleashing Potential Podcast, we interview progressive individuals who are unleashing their potential on the world around them. We take a deep dive on how they got to where they are, what lessons they have learned along the way, and how their experiences can impact us all.
In this conversation Mat and Neil discuss the role emotional intelligence plays in the journey of self-mastery and how the evolution of conscious leadership is helping companies outperform their competition.
As a special treat, Neil guided a short meditation practice that centered around one of the most commonly cited challenges our clients' report; lack of time. This ‘live’ practice served to demonstrate the power of mindfulness and how accessible it is to every person on the planet.
This is a fascinating and ‘flowy’ conversation that will deepen your perspective on the important role mindfulness can have in your professional and personal life. Chuck in your earbuds and give it a listen - if you like this episode, please share it.
The Fear (And Joy) Of An Alcohol-free Life
In this episode Mat chats with Sarah Connolly about the ingrained fear but unlimited joy of living a life without alcohol. Sarah is a certified Grey Area Drinking and Mindset Coach who helps her clients find the freedom to live an uncompromised (alcohol-free) life.
Sarah has been super successful in business, raised 2 young boys, and navigated life in Australia. But she knew her drinking habit was getting out of hand, and it started getting in the way of her living in a way she was proud of.
This is a conversation about flourishing without alcohol, about choice, about ingrained societal cultures, and how to take control of how you live your life.
This is not a conversation that demonises alcohol. It’s the chance to reframe the relationship many people have with alcohol and how life can be even more amazing by shifting the priorities of the grapes and the grain.
On The Unleashing Potential Podcast, we interview progressive individuals who are unleashing their potential on the world around them. We take a deep dive on how they got to where they are, what lessons they have learned along the way, and how their experiences can impact us all.
She’s all about providing support to people not ‘bad enough’ for rehab or not cut out for AA but are ready to make some changes.
It’s a raw, honest, and compelling conversation. Chuck in your earbuds and get ready to at least question the role alcohol plays in your life. If you like this episode, please share it.
Think Of Work As A Game You Play For Money
In this episode Mat chats with Luke Chao, Toronto's most trusted consulting hypnotist who makes hypnosis make sense.
As well as a shared passion for matters of the mind, Mat and Luke share an audience of people in leadership roles, business owners, and those looking to unlock more of their potential.
Let’s face it, leadership roles can feel quite isolated and lonely. This often leads to second guessing decisions, doubting your own performance, and hitting the inevitable glass ceiling, the performance plateau.
Luke shares what we can learn from elite athletes in the way that they talk to themselves and how it affects their performance. He also shares the difference between self-talk and affirmations - it turns out there’s a huge difference!
Luke is a hypnotherapist focusing on naturalistic, results-based approaches. His training is based on detailed, feedback-driven processes: flowcharts, not scripts.
As an example, Luke shares how he has evolved over the years and now sees better results, faster by teaching his clients to think as someone who doesn’t have a problem rather than diving backwards to dig out the root cause of it.
On The Unleashing Potential Podcast, we interview progressive individuals who are unleashing their potential on the world around them. We take a deep dive on how they got to where they are, what lessons they have learned along the way, and how their experiences can impact us all.
This a Liquorice Allsorts of a conversation - there’s something for everyone! You know what to do next - open the mind, plugin and give it a listen. And as always, if you like it, feel free to share it.
Hiding In Plain Sight With Mental Illness
In this episode Mat chats with Melanie Gibson, author of the book ‘Kicking And Screaming - a memoir of madness and martial arts’ who lives in the USA and shares her life of hiding in plain sight with mental illness.
Whilst the conversation initially followed the obvious path of linking Melanie’s return to Taekwondo and the associated benefits of focus, physical and mental stimulation, community; the discussion shifted and dove down the rabbit hole of eating disorders, something Melanie labels a ‘mental illness’ and has lived with since she turned 13 years old.
As one reviewer commented, “Melanie's book is not a martial arts story. It’s the terrifying tale of a beautiful soul at war with itself.” As you’ll hear, Melanie gave Mat permission to discuss any subjects related to her journey, and such candidness requires courage.
On The Unleashing Potential Podcast, we interview progressive individuals who are unleashing their potential on the world around them. We take a deep dive on how they got to where they are, what lessons they have learned along the way, and how their experiences can impact us all.
Mental Health is a subject that touches the lives of almost everyone on the planet at some stage. The Impact Project is an active supporter of Lifeline Australia, the nation's suicide prevention service. In addition to helping to pay for calls to support those in their darkest moments, it is our hope that we can extend our reach through sharing these conversations.
So throw in the ear-buds and listen to Melanie as she shares her experience of hiding in plain sight with mental illness.
And if you like it, we’d love you to share it.
Making Alcohol Insignificant In Your Life
On this episode of the Unleashing Potential Podcast Mat chats with Karolina Rzadkowolska, a certified alcohol-free life coach and Amazon bestselling author. Karolina describes herself as working with dreamers and doers who want to see what they are capable of without alcohol weighing them down and holding them back from realising their full potential.
Mat and Karolina discussed how alcohol has achieved such an ingrained level of normalcy within most Western societies and the social stigmas that perpetuate the drinking culture.
This is not a conversation that seeks to demonise alcohol. It’s a conversation that takes a deep dive into the psychology of drinking alcohol and seeks to redress the balance of our neurochemistry so that we can find euphoria in so many other pursuits.
On The Unleashing Potential Podcast, we interview progressive individuals who are unleashing their potential on the world around them. We take a deep dive on how they got to where they are, what lessons they have learned along the way, and how their experiences can impact us all.
Katrina demonstrated her depth of knowledge in an unassuming and disarming way. She generously provided a step-by-step approach for gently challenging your own relationship with alcohol and has certainly lowered the barrier to entry for these discussions. More information can be found at her website - the links are in the show notes.

Movement Is A Lifestyle
On this episode of the Unleashing Potential Podcast, Mat chats with Ben Reuter, PhD, about the importance of ‘movement’. Ben is also the host of ‘Moving2Live’ podcast, a platform on which he interviews a range of health and medical professionals on the subject of movement being a lifestyle.
In their discussion, Mat and Ben help to break down the stigmas that surround the traditional concepts of ‘fitness training’ and, instead, talk about practical ways that you can use movement to enhance both the quality and duration of life.
Ben talked about his Top 5 takeaways, so far, from the amazing range of professionals he has interviewed. As will be obvious to anyone listening to/watching, Ben’s passion for the subject of movement meant that his Top 5 was closer to Top 6-8 but, they‘re invaluable knowledge bombs and are perfectly positioned to appeal to anyone on this planet!
Ben’s Top 5(ish) subjects included the following:
What's the best type of exercise?
- Don’t over complicate it…

Is Your Excellence Killing You?
In this episode, Mat chats with Debra Sunderland and learns how a competitive cyclist suffered a brain injury yet felt grateful for almost dying.
Debra is living proof that there is innate power in choosing to shift from the relentless pursuit of excellence to one of genius-ship.
Following her brush with death, Debra discovered her true genius is creating a clear vision for CEO's and their teams - helping to make their visions a reality. She challenges leaders by inviting them to create a collaborative, vibrant, responsible, and joy-filled culture, which fosters highly desirable results.
She knows first-hand that those who achieve the most usually suffer the most. Traditional leadership is so often filled with limiting beliefs, unconscious biases, and sabotaging behaviours. Instead, why not choose a sustainable level of excellence and self-awareness in all aspects of your life.
On The Unleashing Potential Podcast we interview progressive individuals who are unleashing their potential on the world around them. We take a deep dive into how they got to where they are, what lessons they have learned along the way, and how their experiences can impact us all.

From Aspirational Success To Attempted Suicide
In this episode Mat and his guest, Simon Stephen talk about how the way in which we work has changed forever. From his side, Simon previously spent 25 years in the corporate world working for some of the biggest names in the industry.
On the face of it, he was very successful and had the kind of life most would dream of - earning huge amounts of money, big houses, cars, holidays, a beautiful wife, and all the trappings of a life revolving around materialism and corporate reward.
But this kind of increasing demand on employees to perform at the highest levels for prolonged periods is far in excess of what would be deemed healthy by medical professionals. And as Simon learned first hand, this trend has led to an inevitable increase in work-related stress, physical and mental exhaustion, emotional breakdown, and tragically, suicide.
Simon shares how he was suffering in silence underneath a facade of ’success’ - addicted to prescription painkillers, drinking heavily, behaving callously and selfishly towards family, friends, and colleagues, hurting other people who didn't deserve it, and on a path of self-destruction that led to him forcing open a hotel window in London and attempting to take his own life.
Thankfully, that moment changed his life trajectory, and whilst shame played its part in giving him the willpower to take responsibility for previous wrongs, he realised that the sincerest apology he could give is to exhibit a consistent change of behaviour and make kindness his default.
He loves talking about the massive, fundamental changes he has made to his life to help him get out of his suicidal state. Moving overseas to a remote hill farm in Portugal, starting a winery, growing Olives, getting fit and healthy, creating his well-being brand, and moving into a career dedicated to helping others.
His 'brand' is called Intorcida (Intorcida: IN - TOR - SEE - DA, Verb [slang]: To Un-Twist yourself) which provides services geared towards helping people recognise, understand, and counter the stresses of corporate life.
On The Unleashing Potential Podcast, we interview progressive individuals who are unleashing their potential on the world around them. We take a deep dive into how they got to where they are, what lessons they have learned along the way, and how their experiences can impact us all.
This is a candid, ‘no holds barred’ deep dive into a person's darkest moment and bouncing beyond to lead a life of gratitude and service. Simon needs no sympathy, nor does he ask for it. He has sought forgiveness from those around him during his difficult years and is now on a path of real meaning and, some would say, real success.
So chuck in your earbuds and, if you like what you hear, remember to share the love by sending the link to someone you think would also benefit from hearing this.
Why Sleep Matters
This is a bonus episode of the Unleashing Potential Podcast that focuses on a topic that could be the single most important lifestyle behaviour that’s stopping you from performing at your peak at work and in life.
It’s also a topic that could be having a hugely detrimental impact on your health and life expectancy.
And that’s not hyperbole!
The subject is sleep and this conversation focussed on WHY sleep matters. Mat Lock had the opportunity of talking with Filipa Bellette and the conversation quickly took a deep dive into the physiological implications of not getting enough sleep each and every night.
Filipa is one of Australia’s leading Functional Medicine practitioners who is passionate about helping her clients improve a range of important lifestyle related behaviours, of which sleep is one. She generously shared some key takeaways for ‘why’ we sleep and then a tangible, real-life walk through the ‘HOW TO’ of improving sleep hygiene.
On the Unleashing Potential Podcast, we interview progressive individuals who are unleashing their potential on the world around them. We take a deep dive on how they got to where they are, what lessons they have learned along the way and how their experiences can impact us all.
This is a great conversation for anyone who is not regularly getting 7-8 hours of sleep every night. Mat shared some of his realties around sleep and was treated to an ‘in the moment’ coaching session that was as valuable for him as it will be for every listener of this episode.
So, reframe the idea of ‘pillow talk’ and get ready to be guided through a ‘sleep 101’ mini masterclass with one of Australia’s leading experts. Throw on your headphones and, if you like what you hear, remember to share the love by sending the link to someone you think would also benefit from hearing this.
What Motivates People To Perform At Their Peak?
Today we have something a little different for you.
In this episode you’re going to listen to an amazing interview from our workplace wellness program. It’s actually an extracted weekly webinar from our Wellness Warriors program when Mat chatted with Ross Hastings, someone with vast behavioural science expertise who helps us understand what leads people, and groups of people to perform to the peak of their potential.
Ross is a psychologist who keeps himself on the cutting edge of coaching psychology and positive psychology to pursue his passion for exploring human potential. He also has a sporting background and he, too, believes we can transcend the world of sport and business to understand and optimise the potential of teams.
It’s common that people in business consider their world to be significantly different than that of a sporting world. This is not in fact the case and in many ways, the systemic elements of sport mean that it’s a perfect case study for the application of what we know about teams, high performance, wellness, and wellbeing.
No doubt, the modern business environment is infinitely more complicated, and it can be harder to apply those principles, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try.
On The Impact Project Podcast, we interview progressive individuals who are unleashing their potential on the world around them. We take a deep dive on how they got to where they are, what lessons they have learned along the way and how their experiences can impact us all.
This is a fascinating subject and Ross makes it easily digestible and relatable for everyone on the planet.
So, invest in yourself and enjoy the next 30 minutes of wisdom that Ross shared. Chuck in your earbuds and, if you like what you hear, remember to share the love by sending the link to someone you think would also benefit from hearing this.

She is an advocate for Lifestyle Medicine which is an evidence-based medical specialty that Alka likes to call TLC (Therapeutic Lifestyle Change). As the name would suggest, at its core, it's about promoting healthy lifestyle changes so as to reduce or avoid the need for pharmaceutical intervention.
This is a ‘must listen’ for everyone on the planet. It’s that time, throw in the earbuds and listen to Alka as she simplifies the complex and paves the way for meaningful change in our own life.

Max Cathcart - Habit-based Coaching
In this episode Mat Lock again chatted with Max Cathcart, a nutrition coach from Alberta, Canada whose clients are often busy professionals and business owners.
As nutrition is only part of the story for optimising human performance, Max has adopted a Habit Based Coaching approach where he fosters better mental habits and teaches the benefits of focusing on the majors before the minors.
As will become evident when you listen to this episode, Max is incredibly pragmatic and practices what he preaches. Alongside his nutrition coaching, he is building a business that designs, manufactures, and installs high-end gym equipment solutions.
He’s a busy guy and is able to impart some of the tips and tricks that help him succeed - all the time maintaining a (very) healthy mind and body.
As always, if you want to share the love with a mate who would also enjoy this episode - you know what to do!

Real Food v Supplements - Max Cathcart
In this episode Mat Lock chatted with Max Cathcart, a nutrition coach from Alberta, Canada.
Max chose to focus on his health and fitness during his college years rather than chugging beers and partying. His love of hockey was a passion that fuelled his competitive nature but he went on to discover the world of lifting weights. In his early years Max worked for Popeye's, a Canadian supplements company and soon became fixated on anything that could provide an edge in performance.
Over time Max came to realise that there was a better way. A more natural way. Max talks about his training and supplement regime 'then', versus 'now'. They are very different and these days Max coaches his clients about the benefits of healthy lifestyle behaviours such as eating real food, managing stress and sleep hygiene.
Max is very generous and balanced with his advice, all of which is underpinned with his own experiences. If you're looking for some 'feet on the ground' advice to help you navigate a busy life whilst optimising your health, plug in and give this a listen!

In this episode Mat chats with Coach Cam from Houston in Texas. A former American football player turned head coach, after several Final Four and Super Bowl appearances, was called by USA Football and offered the role as Master Trainer. Coach Cam was born.
This discussion centres around how Coach Cam has used the same structured approach to coaching football to his life as a leader. His coaching style naturally focussed on strategy and looked to optimise each and every member of his team. The same is true in life also.
Coach Cam is one of the worlds good people. He is driven and passionate to serve others, as evidenced by his philanthropic endeavours in his home state. Urinary Leakage // Women in Sport
This episode is an extract from a Bay Games Get Together that focusses on a subject that is often considered a little taboo... what are we talking about?
Urinary incontinence. It affects many women who participate in sport and exercise. It does not discriminate with regard to age, and it affects younger athletes and older athletes alike. Mat's introduction to this issue occurred during a functional fitness competition when two of my female mates mentioned they were going to change their shorts because the next workout included Double-unders. Who knew? Every woman participating in high impact sports, that's who!
Enter Courtenay Polock - an exercise physiologist from Sydney who is on a mission to make women pee-free! And it's not just about convenience... This is a physiological condition that deserves remedial treatment and in this chat Mat and Courtenay explain why that is!
Feel free to share this episode with your training buddies, mates or colleagues who you think would be interested.
Meanwhile, let’s get into it – enjoy the show and, as always, be kind to yourselves, be brave, have fun and lead by example.

Feeding The Plant Based Gorilla - Jacob Hohua
In this episode we again chat with Jacob Hohua, the Plant-based Gorilla, but this time we take a deep dive into what his diet looks like.
Jacob shares how he fuels and recovers using a diet that is free from animal products. At 113kg’s of ripped power Jacob certainly ‘walks the walk’ in terms of demonstrating what's possible. This is a conversation that resonated with Mat who has been plant-based for 8 years already. Together they tackle the common question of, "Where do you get your protein from?". (spoiler alert - it's easy)
If you want to hear Jacob dispel some of the myths around diet as they pertain to performance then plug in your earbuds and listen to this relatable account of how one man is leading by example. As in nature, this human gorilla is as plant-based as the real thing...

5 Life Stages of a Female Athlete
This is the first part of a monthly Bay Games Get Together that focussed on what could be described as being 'for the ladies' but if you're a guy, it's actually for you too.
And if you're a Personal Trainer or Coach, you too need to know this stuff. Whilst what Mat Lock and Ed Morrison talked about with Courtenay Polock and Will Henke had a bias toward physiological considerations for that of female athletes much of it is important regardless of sporting endeavours.
Because the continuum of a person’s life can be divided into several stages, each characterised by certain features. Accompanied by considerable hormonal changes, the physiological life stages for female athletes matter greatly and those are what was talked about. This was a great conversation and paves the way for future educational pieces around these traditionally taboo subjects that impact the lives of over half of the global population.
Enjoy the show and, as always, be kind to yourselves, be brave, have fun and lead by example.

Disclaimer: "I may sound crazy when I say PTSD is a blessing. My perspective - I can’t run from it. It will always be a part of who I am now - so I had a choice. Let my emotions drive me or learn how to use those emotions to drive me towards my goals. I wouldn’t know how far I could push if I didn’t have all that pain for fuel. So to me that is a blessing as it’s made me who I am today."
