Ep. 66 - Five Minute Friday: Think Others First!

Ep. 66 - Five Minute Friday: Think Others First!

In this episode, I share what it means to have the HEART of a leader, and that is to "Think Others First".  During this difficult time, we have an opportunity to lead by giving of our time, talents, and resources to assist those who are less fortunate or in need of an encouraging word.

This concept was taught to me by Randy Gravitt with Integreat Leadership - for more information, check out the following link:  https://integreatleadership.com/

Also, I've been inspired by so many "Impact Show" contributors providing FREE resources!  I know there's probably more people putting out great content (and don't worry, I'll continue to share as I see them!), but here are just a few I wanted to point everyone to at this point:

If you have any other resources to share or have a story of someone you know who is "Thinking Others First" and having an impact in their community, I want to hear about it!  Please email me at mdiener@fca.org and I'd love to share with all of our listeners.

Thanks so much!

Dr. Parker was named the Director of Athletics at California Baptist University in 2009.

During his 10 years at the helm, the Lancers have had an unprecedented run of success, leading to Parker being named The Press-Enterprise Most Influential Sports Figure in the Inland Empire in 2015. Parker has led the Lancers from NAIA to Division II and Division I. Ep. 50 - David Jack on "Magnifying the Good" and Why Motivating with Joy Always Wins

David Jack One of the world's most recognized sports performance and conditioning coaches, David Jack creates experiences that help people discover, co-create, and activate the greatness that lies within them. "I believe that as we use our strengths; physical, mental, emotional and spiritual, to serve, we are given more. Fitness has been relegated to 6 pack abs, a faster 40, a bigger bench, a better Fran time. Goals are good, and they matter. But if all we train and prepare for is to improve our fitness metrics, or look better for others that judge us, then that’s all we get. But as we cast our Eyes Up, and choose to Rise Up, acting out of inspiration with intention for purposes greater than self, amazing things begin to happen. When great people, places and things come together to create the change they seek in the world, the positive effects cascade forever. This is my mission, my activprayer: To use my God given gifts, talents and passions to inspire, connect, teach and share with others in an effort to change the way we look at fitness, ourselves and those around us. To help people get ready to be ready when they are called upon, becoming the who THEY were created to be, in order to do the WHAT ONLY THEY CAN DO." – David Jack

Ep. 42 - Anthony Renna on Running Your Own Race

Anthony Renna was one of the first guys to put out a podcast focused  on strength & conditioning.  The Strength Coach Podcast featured  Mike Boyle and a host of other great professionals, and Anthony helped  usher in an era of podcasts in our industry.

Since then, Anthony has created several other podcasts as well as  Strength Coach TV where he goes all over the country to bring us video  tours of strength & conditioning facilities.  He has gotten so busy  with his media enterprise that he barely trains any more, yet he is  making a huge impact on the profession.

Anthony’s approach has always been “the man behind the man,” but as  I’ve gotten to know Anthony, I’ve really been able to see how he’s  making a difference.  In this episode of The Impact Show, I talk to  Anthony about his path and we go into depth on the impact he’s making.

Ep. 41 - THE IMPACT SHOW - The Art of Sports Science with Fergus Connolly

Ep. 41 - THE IMPACT SHOW - The Art of Sports Science with Fergus Connolly

Sports science has become one of the hottest topics and trends in the  world of strength & conditioning.  It seems like everyone is trying  to find the holy grail of athlete monitoring or how to utilize sports  science to find the key to athletic success.  Millions of dollars have  been poured into technology designed to enhance our understanding of  athletes so that coaches can make better decisions about training and  practice.  Unfortunately, it does look like those dollars have had much  of a return on investment for most programs yet.

This could be due to many factors:

  • Coaches not knowing how to take advantage of the technology
  • Coaches not making decisions based on the technology
  • The technology not giving coaches the most important information necessary
  • Information overload
  • Coaches not knowing what to do with all of the information

It could also be that technology can’t tell us everything that is  going on.  It can’t account for the human factor in sport, so coaches  still need to make instinctive decisions and athletes still need to make  plays.

Director of Sports Science & Operations for the University of  Michigan Football Program, Fergus Connolly Ph.D., has a unique  perspective on the sports science trend.  While Connolly is fully  educated on the technology, he also has a deep understanding of the  human element present in sports.  In his new book, Game Changer – The  Art of Sports Science, he goes into great depth on the ways teams win  games.

At first, this seems like just another book on winning, but it’s not.   Instead, it’s an in-depth study of sports at both the macro and micro  level that makes you think about sports from a unique perspective.

In this episode of The Impact Show, Jim & Fergus discuss the  impact that sports science is having on sports and how we can use it to  truly make a difference.

Ep. 40) - THE IMPACT SHOW - Making a Difference From the Inside with the Power Athlete Guys

Ep. 40) - THE IMPACT SHOW - Making a Difference From the Inside with the Power Athlete Guys

Sometimes you see a problem and you complain about it.  Other times,  you see a problem and you do something about.  But, making a change to  an existing structure or organization is not easy.  That’s why it’s so  impressive that the gang at Power Athlete – John Welbourn, Tex McQuilken  and Luke Summers – has been able to influence the way CrossFit boxes  around the world approach training.

After a very successful career in the NFL, John Welbourn was asked to  create a CrossFit program for football players.  He knew that a  traditional CrossFit program was not appropriate for football players,  but instead of saying no, he saw an opportunity to make a difference  from the inside.  He embarked on a mission to teach CrossFit trainers  the difference between traditional CrossFit and a systematic and  progressive training program for athletes.

Of course, this was met with resistance, but that did not deter John  from spreading his message.  Over time, he was able to show coaches all  over the world the light and his Power Athlete programs are now a part  of CrossFit boxes all over the world.

Along the way, Tex McQuilken and Luke Summers joined John on the  mission and helped speed up the process and create more momentum than  ever.  Together, these guys are a colorful band of characters with a  serious mission and strong educational background.

In this episode, we get to hear how these guys are making a  difference from the inside.  They discuss all of the struggles with this  approach as well as the successes and how they are making a difference.   We also talk about how difficult it can be to change peoples minds,  especially when their education is somewhat limited.

Power Athlete is about to embark on a new journey as they open a new  facility in Texas, so we also get to hear their thought process on this  move from California and what they’re doing to prepare for it.

For more information on Power Athlete programs, visit PowerAthleteHQ or listen to Power Athlete Radio on your favorite podcast platform.

Ep. 39 - THE IMPACT SHOW - How to write a book and launch a product

Over the past few months, I’ve been spending a lot of time talking  about how to write a book or launch a product.  The reason for this is  the recent release of the new IYCA book Principles of Athletic Strength & Conditioning.  This project took months of hard work from a lot of people to make happen, and the process has been amazing.

I want to share this process with you because I know there are plenty  of people out there with a book or product stuck in their head and you  just don’t know what to do with it.  No matter what some people might  try to tell you, this is not an easy process, so why should you  re-invent the wheel when I can help shorten your learning curve?

Even if you don’t care about how to write a book or launch a product,  listening to the thought process that went into this project can help  you think about other business opportunities in a slightly different  way.  Seeing holes in the market and building relationships are things  that are valuable no matter what kind of business you’re in.  Finding  the right contributors, editors and designers may be specific to this  book, but marketing, utilizing a team, setting up your web site and  e-commerce are all applicable to just about any project these days.

I already understood the process of how to write a book from writing  them in the past, but this one was a collaboration of 17 strength &  conditioning professionals so it was a different kind of animal than  doing most of it on my own.  I hope you enjoy hearing some of the  process I used and everything that went into this.  If you are thinking  about a product or want to know more about how to write a book, I’d love  to help in any way I can.  Shoot me a message at jim@iyca.org and I’ll try to give you what I can.

Ep. 37 - THE IMPACT SHOW - Brett Klika on Selling Out Your Summer Program

I had Brett Klika on the show a while back to talk about Youth  Training concepts, and he was fantastic.  I recently had him speak at  the IYCA Summit, and he was great!  People loved his presentation, but  they loved his hands-on work even more.  He also joined us at the Sports  Performance Business Academy, and I quickly realized that his loves  talking about business topics just as much as youth training.

After several more conversations, we decided it was time to have him  back on the show to talk about Selling Out Your Summer Program.  In the  episode, Brett delivers incredible ideas on how to grow your business,  and it’s not just about your summer programs.  The tips he gives will  help you grow all aspects of your business, and his concepts aren’t  exclusive to youth sports training.  Everything he talks about would  work in just about any business setting with minor tweaks based on your  products and customers.

Brett is like me in many ways – he loves training, he loves making a  difference and he loves business development.  He’s pretty much a living  example of everything the IYCA stands for and I think you’re going to  love this episode.  Get ready to take some notes – I have multiple  pages!

Ep. 36 - THE IMPACT SHOW - Evolving as a Coach

This edition of The Impact Show is all about Evolving as a Coach, but  it can go deeper than that.  Your evolution may also include progress  as a parent, spouse, friend, businessperson or simply becoming a better  version of yourself.  In Part 1 of the show, I explore some of the ways I  have evolved, and I talk about a great live event I recently attended  that was hosted by two young coaches in my area – Dan Allison and Mike  Coval.  Just being there and being a part of this informal mastermind  got me thinking of new ideas and generated a lot of items on my  even-lengthening To-Do list.

Part 2 of the show features our friend Red Wakeham from Michigan  State University talking about he has evolved as a coach, and what that  process has meant to him.

Ep. 35 - THE IMPACT SHOW: Brett Bartholomew on Conscious Coaching

Brett Bartholomew is one of the top young strength coaches in the  industry.  He has worked as a college S & C Coach at University of  Nebraska, spent several years at API/EXOS and he has recently written a  book titled Conscious Coaching, that is destined to be a best-seller in  the world of strength & conditioning, sports performance, fitness  and sports coaching.

I had a chance to spend some time with Brett at the PLAE USE  conference in Indianapolis, and as we got talking, we decided that we  just NEEDED to record a podcast.

My voice still sounds pretty bad from being sick and losing it last  week, but Brett sounds great.  Haha.  He even does an incredible “movie  trailer voice” impersonation that you’re going to love.

If you’re not familiar with Brett Bartholomew, this podcast pretty  much sums him up.  Smart. Witty. Well-spoken.  Down to earth.  And a  great coach.

If you ARE familiar with Brett, you’re going to love this conversation, and you’re going to love his new book.

Ep. 34 - THE IMPACT SHOW - Brett Klika on Youth Development

Brett Klika is a leading authority on youth development and how  coaches can assist in this maturation process.  He worked for  world-renowned trainer Todd Durkin for several years, heading up his  youth development program.  Eventually, Brett co-created a program  called SPIDERfit Kids that teaches coaches, trainers and educators the  intricacies of helping young people become more physically literate.

Brett breaks this process down into 9 distinct segments:

Body Awareness:  Understanding the parts of the body and various ways they can move.

Directional Awareness: The ability to understand the  directions of the body (right, left, up, down, etc.) and to be able to  move in all planes of motion.

Spatial Awareness:  A concept of how much space the body occupies in relation to the surrounding environment.

Temporal Awareness:  The sense of timing, rhythm, and precision.

Vestibular Awareness:  An internal sense of the head and body’s position in relation to gravity.

Proprioceptive Awareness: The ability to interpret  the internal sense of where the body and specific joints are in space  and in relation to each other, and how much force/velocity they are  exerting.

Tactile Awareness: The ability to appropriately respond to touch, in addition to differentiation of objects by size, texture, and shape.

Visual Awareness:  The ability to visually focus, track, and take in broad fields of view.

Auditory Awareness: The ability to accurately interpret and respond to sound.

If you work with children, have children or think you might be  interested in working with young people at some point, I think you’re  going to love listening to Brett Klika on this episode of The Impact  Show.

You may also want to check out the awesome program SPIDERfit Kids that  Brett Klika created for coaches and trainers.  This incredibly-thorough  program walks you step-by-step, how to create and organize  developmentally-appropriate programs for young kids.

Ep. 33 - THE IMPACT SHOW - Getting More Done & Business Mistakes

People interested in making an impact are busy.  It’s important that  we get a lot done in a limited amount of time.  I’m often asked how I’m  able to maintain a high level of productivity, but I wish that I could  accomplish even more each day.  I truly believe that productive people  always feel that way.  Many of the most productive people I know  constantly talk about how they wish they had more hours in the day.   They are always interested in getting more done.

Because I’ll never get more hours in the day, I’ve figured out how to  maximize my time by using some very simple, yet effective, strategies.   In the first half of this episode, I talk about some of the strategies  I’ve learned to apply in my career.

The second half of Ep. 33 includes a familiar guest – Ryan Ketchum –  to offer up his thoughts on what he considers the most common business  mistakes.  Ryan is a very efficient businessman, and he always presents  ideas in a way that allows you to apply the knowledge.

If you’re interested in getting more done and avoiding common business mistakes, this is the episode you’ve been waiting for.
