As April is the time to start new things in Japan. Let’s start our season 6 with something a little bit different than what we usually do. In this episode, we will explore the complex world of romantic relationships in the young generation. Zay, a talented songwriter and singer slash love songs expert, will share his stories and insights with us to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges in navigating love and relationships. In episode 9, we welcomed a very special guest, our beloved Spanish teacher, Professor. Victor! We discussed living and working in different countries from various subtopics, cultural differences, future plans, etc. The host is curious about his international experience and asked questions by imagining their future. Where do you feel like home? How is having life in different countries? The guest gave us some advice from their lessons for you willing to take on the world in the future. Please enjoy!

Decision-making is in itself a hard process and, as young adults, we experience that in our day-to-day lives as well. After-graduation plans require an even more rigorous thinking process. To alleviate our student-life concerns  a bit and to assist the decision-making processes all of us go through, we talked to two of our senpais, got to know their experience, challenges, lessons and asked for their advice . In this episode, we discussed matters ranging from finances to post-graduation options, from a bigger picture view on after-APU life to small nostalgic moments at APU. In Episode 7, hosts and guests talked about friendships. In this episode, guests were asked to answer questions about their friendships in advance, and hosts asked guests about the answers. At the end of the episode, there is a section that the guests answer questions about relationship problems from host's friend. You can listen to a lot of opinions from a variety of angles. In this episode we continued this month's theme of pride with conversations in English. This episode is especially special because it is a collaboration episode with Equal APU, a circle in APU that works towards spreading awareness about  pride and providing a safe space for open discussion. We have two very special guests who have joined us for this episode, Samara from Equal APU and Raz from our very own Kaiwa Podcast team. Together we talked on topics related to gender fluidity, Gender in Japan, Gender and APU and a lot more. We were able to create a comfortable space without judgement. We also hope that all our listeners are able to find their own version of comfort through our conversations :)

6月はプライドマンスということで、ゲストにかりんをお迎えしてジェンダーについて話し合いました！今回の私たちの目的は、このプライドマンスは、LGBTQIA+の人達だけが関係あるのではなく全ての人にとっても関係があることを伝えたかったからです。また、自分たちの性にも目を向けるためにも私たちのジェンダーに関するアドバイスではなく一個人の意見として経験を話しました。主に日本のジェンダーや同性婚について話しました。ぜひ聞いてみてください！！

June is Pride Month, and we are having Karin as our guest to discuss about gender! This episode purposes to let people know that the Pride Month is not only relevant for LGBTQIA+ people, but for everyone. We also shared our experiences as an individual's opinion, not an advice, in order to arouse your thoughts about your own gender through our episode. 今回のエピソードは3人の新しいホスティングメンバーをお迎えし英語と日本語でインタビューをしました。日本人のあやねは地元である東京と別府を比べての生活の違いを話してくれました。ネパール出身のルビーとウズベキスタン出身のルクソラは、日本に来て実際に体験してみて予期していなかったこと、文化の違いについて話してくれました。世界から仲間が集うAPUだからこそ話し合うべき、彼らから見た日本を知ることができました。このエピソードを聞いていろんな国の生徒と話す機会を作っていただけると嬉しいです！

This episode we welcomed three new hosting members and interviewed them in English as well as in Japanese. Ayane, who is Japanese, talked about the differences in her life compared to her hometown of Tokyo and Beppu. Purbi from Nepal and Rukhsora from Uzbekistan talked about what they did not expect when they came to Japan and about the cultural differences they experienced. We were able to learn about Japan and the University from their point of view, as they gave us an international perspective to APUs multicultural environment.  We also discussed how APU is a place where we can make friends from all over the world and also experience Japanese culture to the maximum. I hope this episode gives you a chance to talk to students from different countries as well !

Being a student comes with a lot of responsibilities and pressure to perform well. Performing well requires you to be organized, productive and self-motivated. At APU, it’s easy to want to do it all - perform well academically, join circles, participate in events, and have a fun social life. But we all know this is easier said than done. In this episode, four APU students gather to share their thoughts on productivity, laziness, difficulty of staying focused online, imposter syndrome and more. 今回のエピソードでは今年の春にapuを卒業したまきこさんにインタビューしました。まきこさんがapuに入学しようと思った理由、オススメの授業、楽しかった行事、卒業してからの計画についても聞き出しました。なかでもコロナ禍で混乱している後輩たちのためにオンラインで受講する授業を手助けする団体を立ち上げたことに驚きました！彼女のapuを思っての名誉ある活動は素晴らしいです。彼女のパワーあるメッセージと共に盛り上がることができました！お楽しみに！

In this episode, we interviewed Makiko, who graduated from apu this spring. We find out why Makiko decided to enroll at apu, what classes she recommends, what events she enjoyed, and what she plans to do after graduation. Among other things, we were surprised to learn that she started an organization to help juniors who are confused by the Corona disaster to take classes online! It is wonderful that she is doing this honorable work with APU in mind. We had a blast with her powerful message! Enjoy!

Spring breaks are usually a time of relaxation and travel for many college students in Japan. With the vacation coming to an end, Sulli, Shasta and guests Rayhan and San share their spring vacation stories; being surprised with Okinawan culture, unexpectedly getting stuck in Hokkaido and travelling 18 hours by train amongst many other fun memories. For the last episode of season 3, all 4 hosts came together and reflected back to season 3 of the Kaiwa Podcast. All the hosts share things about the semester. Each host is currently experiencing a phase of their APU lives, with two members almost ready to graduate, one in the middle of the journey and one just starting out. The conversation led to different places with both our academic and personal topics being put out on the table. The episode was very chill and laid back so please tune it to check out our last episode for this season and we will be back next semester!

Episode 9 is all about African braids. Host Dorcas chats with guests Bénédicte and Salome about the history and cultural significance of braids as well as the difference between cultural appropriation and appreciation. They also have an unfiltered conversation about their respective experiences having braids in Japan. If you’ve ever wondered even the slightest about braids for African hair in general, this episode is for you.

In episode 8, Ririko and Karin and Urara, who are guests, discussed musical movies. We introduced our own recommendations of musical movies and what is different from musical movies and other styles of movies and the most attractive point of musicals. One of the interesting points is that the perspective of musical movies is different from each other even though we love musicals. Everything is Art, they say. But is it really? What makes Art, Art? And what makes Art political? Does the audience play any role in Art and its politicization? They also spotlight ArtLords, an organization in Afghanistan that is using art to promote peace and freedom in the nation's capital, Kabul.

In this episode, Ririko talks about Korean music with Xion, who is from Korea. We discussed beautiful music which plays with Korean traditional instruments and what is popular Korean music for teenagers. Episode 2 of The Kaiwa Podcast is a ball of conversation on sports! APU alumnus Ashane Francis and final year student Dwithi Hariharan chat with host Dorcas about their experiences playing Water Polo and Volleyball respectively. They talk about why they play and how playing sports has helped them become more grounded. They also share their thoughts about the limited media coverage for women in sports.

We put out our final episode earlier this week but we bet you didn’t think we would leave you without a bonus episode. In this episode, we talk to returning guest Maria about discriminatory experiences she has had during the application process for English-teaching part-time(arubaito) positions. Here in Japan, many English language schools require native English nationality as a point of eligibility for a part-time applicant to apply for the position. This is a problem. Host Dorcas and Maria share their thoughts on why this is a problem and where it may have originated from. Maria also drops some gems for non-native English students and others to find opportunities despite the barriers that may exist. Do listen for more!

In this episode of The Kaiwa Podcast, host Tomoka talks with APU student and guest Kaito WAKABASHI about insects-eating(entomophagy). Entomophagy has been around for a while, but why is it that some consider it a source of nutrition? In this conversation, Tomoka and Kaito talk about Japanese Entomophagy, how it is spreading worldwide, and what the connection is between sustainability and entomophagy.

This episode commemorates Pride Month by bringing together three students from the LGBTQIA+ community to share snippets of their experiences. Maria (India), Temi (Nigeria), and Raphael (Switzerland) join host Dorcas to have an organic conversation about everything from coming out stories to the difference in their experiences here in Japan and their home countries, as well as how heterosexual folks can be better allies to their LGBTQIA+ friends.

Have you ever had a question or thought that frequented your mind? If yes, what action did you take towards exploring that question or thought?  In episode 5 of The Kaiwa Podcast, host Yuri talks to Chika Suzuki, a second-year student at APU, who is actively taking steps towards addressing complex questions and challenging herself every now and then. Chika is truly an inspiration, and there is a lot to learn from her numerous experiences contributing to projects to help address issues in different parts of the world. Even our host Yuri mentions that the conversation has opened her eyes to be more intentional about how she lives her life. Warning: You may feel the same after listening to this episode!
