Football: Ohio State’s Saturday game against Maryland canceled

Ohio State will have to wait at least another week to get to 4-0.

The Saturday game against Maryland has been canceled after the Terrapins paused football activities due to an outbreak of cases. The game will not be rescheduled.

“The health, safety and well-being of our student-athletes is our main concern,” head coach Ryan Day said in a release. “Obviously, we are disappointed at not being able to compete this week, but I am incredibly proud of our team and the way they have handled themselves throughout this entire pandemic.”

Big Ten rules establish that a team will be eligible for the Big Ten Championship if a team has participated in at least six games.

Ohio State is set to host No. 10 Indiana Nov. 21.

Podcast: Inside the 2020 Ohio State Football Schedule

The Big Ten released the full conference schedule July 30, laying out 10 games for Ohio State, which included moving the usual season finale against Michigan up by a month.

The season kicks off Sept. 3 at Illinois. In this episode, we highlight the biggest takeaways from the release including a tough October stretch, the Oct. 24 matchup vs. Michigan and the potential timing for games as current times are to be determined.

While the Big Ten hopes the season runs smoothly with no game cancellations, we dive into the implemented “flex time zone” and why the idea is integral for the conference’s hopes of finishing a full season.

Although the Big Ten is operating as if college athletics will be played, players in the conference followed suit of players in the Pac-12 conference in unifying to demand better safety protocols amid COVID-19. We discuss the necessity of these unifying groups as safety and thorough protocols should be paramount to the NCAA.

Podcast: Who gets a ticket?

Podcast: Who gets a ticket?

Ohio State athletics has announced its plan to fill 20 percent of Ohio Stadium if college football is played this fall.

The pressing question for Buckeye fans is who gets a shot at the 20,988 available tickets? Should all tickets go to the students, non-student fans or an even split?

We survey the best options from fairness, economic and safety standpoints as athletic revenue is already looking at a large deficit in 2020.

As one of the only universities to publicly announce its attendance plans, we discuss the potential issues for home-field advantage and whether consistency should be paramount for the Big Ten regarding stadium capacity.

There are plenty of complications and questions regarding this decision, but we clear things up and navigate the best avenues for Ohio State here in the latest episode of the Lantern Sports Podcast.

Gene Smith emphasizes flexibility and control behind conference-only decision

Gene Smith emphasizes flexibility and control behind conference-only decision

In a time of uncertainty, the Big Ten looked to gain some control ahead of the college football season.

After the Big Ten announced Thursday that it would be switching to a conference-only schedule, Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said that the change allows for more flexibility to move games around due to possible disruptions from COVID-19.

“The biggest thing for us was the opportunity to have September and create some flexibility,” Smith said. “If we’re able to play in September and something occurs in late September or early October, we can pause. We can hit the pause button and provide a window of opportunity for student-athletes to not be put at risk.”

The decision opens up the previously scheduled dates of Sept. 5, 12 and 19 for the Buckeyes to potentially move conference match-ups, if need be. Smith also said that the Week 0 game, played on Aug. 29, would also be available for a potential game.

The first three weeks of September were originally set aside for games against Bowling Green, Oregon and Buffalo. Smith said that he talked to the athletic director of each team about the Big Ten’s decision — one which is not news to the Pac-12 and MAC conferences.

Podcast: The recent Ohio State lineage with the Washington Redskins (feat. John Keim)

Podcast: The recent Ohio State lineage with the Washington Redskins (feat. John Keim)

John Keim, ESPN NFL reporter for the Washington Redskins, joins the show to discuss the Ohio State lineage of Dwayne Haskins, Terry McLaurin and Chase Young.

The bond between these three Ohio State alumni continues to be strong in the next stage of their career in Washington, D.C. Keim discusses their relationship and how their upbringing as Buckeyes has elevated them not just as players, but as leaders and role models on and off the field.

For McLaurin and Haskins, they shared plenty of memorable moments as Buckeyes. Last year, as NFL teammates, they connected for a 75-yard touchdown in Week 15 against the Philadelphia Eagles with their former coach, Urban Meyer, looking on. Keim details the strength of their connection as they develop as teammates.

The third of the Ohio State trio in D.C. is new to the league but his work ethic and character radiate the aura of a seasoned veteran. Chase Young is described as a “generational talent,” but Keim explains how Young’s Ohio State legacy and future in the NFL is built on far more than just athletic talent.

Three of the most impactful players in the recent history of Ohio State football have taken the next step of their career, but they’re doing it together. It’s a trend that doesn’t happen often, and we’re here to examine the eminence of their bond and their growth as players who all came through Ohio State.

The revolving door of Ohio State athletic transfers

The revolving door of Ohio State athletic transfers

As highly touted players leave Columbus, Lantern Sports dissects the transfer landscape at Ohio State after recent moves have revitalized the conversation.

More than 10 million people across the country watched Ohio State transfer and former LSU quarterback Joe Burrow get drafted No. 1 overall by the Cincinnati Bengals April 23. A week later, former four-star running back Jaelen Gill departed from Columbus to start a new collegiate journey. Add in the surprising transfers of Luther Muhammad, D.J. Carton and Alonzo Gaffney from the men's basketball team and Kierstan Bell and Janai Crooms from the women’s basketball team, and each of Ohio State’s major sports programs have had a fair share of roster shake-ups.

Ohio State isn’t in deep trouble though, as the transfer cycle isn’t just an outflow of players leaving the school, but rather a revolving door. As certain players leave their respective programs, new players make their way to Columbus because of the Buckeyes’ athletic history and legacy as a flagship university in the Big Ten.

From players who have departed to those who have arrived, we dive into the reasoning and implications of the ever-revolving door of Ohio State transfers.
