MMP Ep 165: Stephanie Young on Raising a Child Who’s “Differently Wired”
This week, Laura sits down for a chat with Stephanie Young, who shares her beautiful, real, and raw motherhood experience. Like many of us, Steph is working to find the elusive balance between full-time work, young kids, and self care. But for her this also includes navigating the unfamiliar terrain of raising a child who is “differently wired”. Steph’s son, Bailey, was diagnosed with high-functioning autism when he was just turning 3, and after reaching out in hopes of bringing this conversation to the podcast so that more moms might feel solidarity through similar journeys, Steph so graciously and openly agreed to come share her own. Steph is not a trained expert in the field of neurodiversity; she is here to share her empowering and ever so real story and offer her perspective to help others who may feel lonely in this experience. This podcast is a safe space to share, and I have found that the most learning and solidarity comes from real mamas sharing real stories. In this episode, Jess sits down with Tracy Wilson, the host of the Melanated Mom Podcast to talk about the concepts of anti-racism, allyship, and how we can begin to change the world in our hearts and homes, starting with our children. This is a hard and necessary conversation that just begins to scratch the surface of how we live with unconscious bias, how we can participate in overt and cover racism, and what it's like to be a Black mother in the world today.  This was one of the most important topics we've ever covered on the podcast, and we would be honored if you tuned in to hear Tracy's wise and truthful words. “WARNING: this episode is about the heartbreaking loss of still birth. While we know this is an incredibly important conversation that needs to happen, we also want to be sure to let you know before reading the show notes or tuning in, in case this might be a triggering topic. We are so grateful for this open, loving community and for Sydelle for sharing Bostyn’s story.”  In this episode, Laura sits down with Sydelle Tungsvik for an incredibly important, moving, inspiring, but also inexplicably hard episode. Sydelle shares the story of her daughter Bostyn's birth. Thank you for listening, for supporting, for loving like this community does best. We are so grateful to Sydelle for sharing Bostyn's story and for all of you. Sydelle is a pediatric nurse and wife to Jt who is a police officer in our home city. They were both born and raised in the PNW. MMP Ep. 107: All About Cycle Syncing with Zesty Ginger
In this episode, Jess sits down with Megan and Alex of Zesty Ginger to chat all things cycle syncing!  This episode is full of amazing insight into what's happening during a woman's cycle, how to work WITH not against your cycle, and to embrace the natural rhythms, strengths, and needs of our feminine cycles.  We chat about how you can adjust your movement, foods, tasks and supplements to feel your best, and work with your energy at every phase of the cycle.  You will absolutely be blown away by this episode! Alex (M.D.) and Megan (Health Coach & Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner) work with pre-menopausal women in an online group format.  We focus on balancing hormones and supporting detoxification by teaching women to use the phases of their menstrual cycles to their advantage.  The natural ebb and flow that happens to our hormones, organ systems, and bodies overall as women is there to renew and strengthen us. When we work with the natural cycles of our bodies, we allow ourselves to heal and recover on a level that few of us ever reach when we operate within the “rules” of the hectic modern world. Even the alternative medicine world has lost its connection to how the female body operates. Most protocols and health programs out there show no regard for the cycles that govern the flow of our bodies as women. By focusing on different activities, elixirs, foods and rituals each week of your cycle we can help the body to detoxify naturally.  Download their guide to cycle syncing HERE.   Join the PMS Project HERE and get 20% off your enrollment fee by using the code MODERNMAMAS. MMP Ep. 105: Listener Melissa Nicolai guides us on how to create your own organic home garden
In this episode, Jess sits down with listener Melissa Nicolai, a budding novice organic gardener to chat all about how to create your own organic home garden from a layman's perspective.  This episode is incredibly relatable, and a must for anyone dipping their toe into the topic of growing their own food.  We not only cover doable, easy, actionable steps to create your own garden, but we delve into deeper topics concerning conventional gardening and farming, the overuse of glyphosate, and the larger global impact of growing your own food. Melissa Nicolai lives in Southern California with her husband, Blake and 13 month old daughter Abigail.  In an effort to holistically address some health concerns she began examining many areas of her life and discovered that one of the biggest ways to impact her health was making some adjustments to what she was eating. After reading Eating on the Wild Side by Jo Robinson she told her husband that she wanted to start an organic garden in the backyard and start growing her own food. She examines how different ideals of gender, motherhood, and employment are embedded in these policies, and how they shape the daily lives of working mothers in these countries. Her book based on this research called Making Motherhood Work: How Women Manage Careers and Caregiving was recently published by Princeton University Press. Caitlyn is a 2019 Nancy Weiss Malkiel Scholar (Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation) and a 2018 Work and Family Researchers Network Early Career Fellow.
