MMP Ep 165: Stephanie Young on Raising a Child Who’s “Differently Wired”
This week, Laura sits down for a chat with Stephanie Young, who shares her beautiful, real, and raw motherhood experience. Like many of us, Steph is working to find the elusive balance between full-time work, young kids, and self care. But for her this also includes navigating the unfamiliar terrain of raising a child who is “differently wired”. Steph’s son, Bailey, was diagnosed with high-functioning autism when he was just turning 3, and after reaching out in hopes of bringing this conversation to the podcast so that more moms might feel solidarity through similar journeys, Steph so graciously and openly agreed to come share her own. Steph is not a trained expert in the field of neurodiversity; she is here to share her empowering and ever so real story and offer her perspective to help others who may feel lonely in this experience. This podcast is a safe space to share, and I have found that the most learning and solidarity comes from real mamas sharing real stories. MMP Ep 164: Tracy Wilson of The Melanated Mom Podcast
In this episode, Jess sits down with Tracy Wilson, the host of the Melanated Mom Podcast to talk about the concepts of anti-racism, allyship, and how we can begin to change the world in our hearts and homes, starting with our children. This is a hard and necessary conversation that just begins to scratch the surface of how we live with unconscious bias, how we can participate in overt and cover racism, and what it's like to be a Black mother in the world today.  This was one of the most important topics we've ever covered on the podcast, and we would be honored if you tuned in to hear Tracy's wise and truthful words. MMP Episode 158: Sustainability and Health Benefits of Responsibly Sourced Seafood with Randy Hartnell
In this episode, Jess sits down with Randy Hartnell, CEO and founder of Vital Choice Wild Seafood and Organics, a company that we know and love well!  It was such an honor to have him on to speak on the creation of Vital Choice and the state of sustainability in the seafood industry.  We covered what's going on in the seafood industry to promote environmental sustainability, how to responsibly source your seafood, the difference between farmed vs. wild seafood, the health benefits of regular seafood in your diet, and concerns of purity and contaminants in certain kinds of seafood.  IT WAS MINDBLOWING.  I personally haven't been so enthralled by a topic in a long time!  We have always loved seafood, and after learning more, we make an effort to have some sort of Vital Choice seafood or supplement in our diet multiple times a week! Randy Hartnell is CEO of VitalChoice.com, the leading online seafood company he and his wife Carla founded in 2001. Randy loves helping his customers live healthier lives by providing reliable access to safe, sustainable seafood, and educating them about the far-reaching impact of their seafood choices on our health, society, and the environment. Prior to founding Vital Choice, Randy spent more than twenty years as an Alaskan commercial fisherman. He has a degree in English Literature from UC, Berkeley. MMP Ep. 119: Bostyn's story
“WARNING: this episode is about the heartbreaking loss of still birth. While we know this is an incredibly important conversation that needs to happen, we also want to be sure to let you know before reading the show notes or tuning in, in case this might be a triggering topic. We are so grateful for this open, loving community and for Sydelle for sharing Bostyn’s story.”  In this episode, Laura sits down with Sydelle Tungsvik for an incredibly important, moving, inspiring, but also inexplicably hard episode. Sydelle shares the story of her daughter Bostyn's birth. Bostyn was born still at 38 weeks, and it is an honor to share her story, the immeasurable impact she's had on her parents' lives, and the many ways she lives on in light through her parents and the work Sydelle is doing with The Baby Steps Foundation to speak openly about Bostyn and connect with other mamas who've experienced the heartache of loss.  This is an episode we all need to hear. 1 in 160 mothers experience a birth of a still baby, and this conversation and the support for these mamas isn't what it needs to be. Thank you for listening, for supporting, for loving like this community does best. We are so grateful to Sydelle for sharing Bostyn's story and for all of you. Sydelle is a pediatric nurse and wife to Jt who is a police officer in our home city. They were both born and raised in the PNW. Their world has been flipped upside down after their daughter Bostyn died at 38 weeks from a true knot in her cord in February. Since then she has been trying to figure out how to make sense in life all while honoring her daughter.  Links and Such: Follow @sydelle_t and @raysandrainbows on Instagram.  Learn more about the Baby Steps Foundation: babystepsfoundation.org  Grab your own Bostyns Beads: bostynsbeads.com  Get 15% off Beekeeper's Naturals products with code: modernmamas Get 15% off Four Sigmatic products with code: modernmamas  Connect with us: Modern Mamas – @modernmamaspodcast Laura – @laura.radicalroots Jess – @jess.holdthespace Laura’s website – http://myradicalroots.com/ Jess’ website – https://www.jessgaertner.com/
