Lesson Walkthrough: An Outcomes-Based Grade 6 Invasion Games Lesson

šŸ‘€ Understanding how to align lessons to curriculum outcomes not only helps teachers maximize the impact of their instruction, it also helps them approach their teaching with as much confidence and clarity as possible! In this episode of The #PhysEd Show Podcast, I'm going to walk you through a purposeful physical education lesson that I recently had the opportunity to share with teachers here in Nova Scotia.

The lesson was designed to help students reach the following learning targets:

  • I know a variety of offensive tactics that help create space.
  • I can use a few (2-3) offensive tactics to create space in invasion games.

As you listen in, pay attention to the way the lesson's design constantly invites students to reflect on where they are going, where they are now, and how they close the gap. I had a lot of fun putting this one together, so let me know if you would like to hear more lesson walkthrough episodes in the future!

Rest Like A Rockstar: Creating The Conditions To Finding Momentum In Your Teaching

šŸ„ā€ā™‚ļø Momentum is one of the absolute best feelings we can experience as teachers. It allows us to get more done, feel that we're on top of all of our tasks, and bring new and exciting ideas to our teaching. However, as teachers, we tend to be horrible at creating the conditions required to experience momentum in our work. This contributes to the feelings of overwhelm that are all too familiar to teachers and that can lead to stress, anxiety, burnout, and/or depression.

So, how do we create the conditions for momentum in our teaching? This is the questions that we'll explore in this week's episode of The #PhysEd Show Podcast! Ā

Andy Vasily is the host of The Run Your Life Podcast, a celebrated instructional coach, an incredible physical education, and one of my good friends.

In today's episode, we dive into Andy's transformation towards becoming an autonomy-supportive PE teacher at the start of his career, the impact that providing students with opportunities to exercise their voice and choice in physical education can have on their learning, and where teachers can start should they wish to shift their teaching towards pedagogies that support autonomy.

Co-Constructing Success Criteria In Physical Education

Co-Constructing Success Criteria In Physical Education

šŸŽÆ Using success criteria in your teaching is a high-leverage practice that has a significant effect on student learning. By building success criteria in partnership with your students, you can help increase student ownership, motivation, and engagement.

That said, how can we bring this practice into a physical education setting? What are the steps to follow and how can we adapt them to meet the realities of teaching physical education?

These are the questions that I do my best to answer in this week's episode of The #PhysEd Show Podcast!

Here is the recording from our latest #PEChat Radio Hour! For this episode, #PEChat host Elyse Loughlin interviews Joey Feith (that's me!) on Twitter Spaces.

This episode focuses on what physical educators can do to help support the development of a growth mindset within their students. In the episode, we explore:

ā€¢ The differences between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset.

ā€¢ How mindsets affect our meaning systems and behaviours.

ā€¢ How teachers can design physical environments that support a growth mindset.

ā€¢ How peer attitudes and behaviours affect the development of a growth mindset.

ā€¢ The different ways that teachers communicate their belief in a growth mindset and how that can affect students.

ā€¢ Simple, evidence-based growth mindset interventions that work.

Unpacking Student Motivation In Physical Education

Unpacking Student Motivation In Physical Education

ā€œIf you donā€™t do the work, then you donā€™t get the grade.ā€

The saddest part about that cringe-worthy sentence is that Iā€™ve said it to students before. Early on in my career, I had no idea how to motivate students in my teaching. Iā€™d do my best to plan fun lessons, but Iā€™d resort to a ā€œcarrots and sticksā€ approach when dealing with unmotivated students.

The problem is that controlling students with rewards and consequences only leads to higher levels of anxiety, boredom, or alienation.

It robs students of their natural love for learning and the feelings of joy, enthusiasm, and interest that once came with it. Knowing this impact, how can we best support student motivation in our lessons?

Self-determination theory looks at human motivation and tries to understand the factors that push or prevent people from wanting to learn and grow. The theory argues that intrinsic motivation is sustained by satisfying three basic psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness.

In this episode, we will take a look at how we can use self-determination theory to increase student motivation in P.E.

I did my best to tie theory to practice and I'm convinced that you will have a few new strategies in your tool belt after listening to this podcast.

Thanks for tuning in! Happy Teaching!

What Physical Educators Can Learn From Norwayā€™s Olympic Success.

What Physical Educators Can Learn From Norwayā€™s Olympic Success.

The 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing are underway and - as I write this - Norway is at the top of the medal standings.

Again.

Norway is a bit of an anomaly: it's a relatively small country at 5.3 million people (which ranks it #119 in the world based on population size), yet somehow it is an Olympic beast.

Prior to the games in Beijing beginning, Norway had 368 medals at the Winter Olympic Games (132 gold, 125 silver, 111 bronze). That count ranks them in the number one spot in all-time medal winners at the Winter Olympics, ahead of the United States (305) and Germany (240).

So what's going on here? What makes Norway so successful at the Olympics and what can we - as physical educators - take away from their approach?

In this episode, I'll be breaking down Norway's philosophy of "The Joy Of Sport For All" and sharing what PE can take away from the nation's approach to create safer, friendlier, more meaningful experiences for our students.Ā

Skills, Knowledge, and Understanding in Physical Education

Skills, Knowledge, and Understanding in Physical Education

Physical literacy is the foundation of physical education.

As physical educators, it is our job to nurture our studentsā€™ physical literacy through meaningful, effective learning experiences. However, there is a common mistake that many PE teachers make that can severely hamper the impact of their teaching:

They focus too much on the physical domain of physical literacy.

Physical literacy exists across four domains: physical, cognitive, affective, and behavioural. Therefore, we need to look beyond the physical aspects of learning in order to best serve our students.

It took me a while to realize this in my own teaching. However, that realization is what led me to eventually start focusing on three key areas of learning: skills, knowledge, and understanding.

In this episode, I'll be breaking down the difference between the three and walking you through how they can help you maximize the impact of your teaching!

#PEChat Radio Hour: Adventure Education with Mark Friedrich

#PEChat Radio Hour: Adventure Education with Mark Friedrich

Here is the recording from our latest #PEChat Radio Hour! For this episode, I connected with Mark Friedrich on Twitter Spaces.

Mark Friedrich is an Adventure Education and Health Education teacher at Millburn High School in Millburn, New Jersey. Mark has been a member of Millburn's Health & PE Department for 16 years. During those years, he has created an Adventure Education program that is not only one of the largest in his state, it's also the envy of many educators out there (this guy included).

Mark was named the 2016 NJAHPERD Secondary Physical Education Teacher of the Year and he was also the recipient of the 2021 SHAPE America Joy of Effort Award, which honors individuals who, by performance and style, have personified the concept that the effort made to enrich the goals and objectives of health and physical education, physical activity, dance, and sport is a labor of love, inspired by commitment and dedication.

When he's not helping students through high-ropes courses, chasing snakes out of his teaching space, or participating in Tough Mudders, Mark travels across the US to present to local, state, and national organizations on the topics of teambuilding, icebreaker activities, problem solving, trust building, and adventure games.

It was an absolute honour to have Mark as our guest for #PEChat Radio Hour and I'm so glad he got to melt our faces - or at least our ears - with his incredible passion for Adventure Education.

šŸ™ A huge thank you to Mark for taking time out of his schedule to help us get fired up about adventure education! Also, thank you to the follow teachers for getting involved during our Q&A session:

#PEChat Radio Hour: Social & Emotional Learning with Karl Mercuri

Here is the recording from our first-ever #PEChat Radio Hour! For this episode, I connected with Karl Mercuri on Twitter Spaces.

Karl Mercuri is the Social and Emotional Learning CoordinatorĀ at The Priory School and a private SEL consultant across schools here in the Greater Montreal area. Originally from Melbourne (Australia), Karl actually started his career teaching physical education there. Earlier in his career, Karl was a facilitator of Kidsmatter (now Be You): a Mental Health and Wellbeing Framework that is implemented throughout Australia. He has dedicated his career to supporting effective social and emotional learning in schools. From studying challenging behaviours, to being trained in positive psychology, to completing courses in emotional intelligence and - more recently - training with The Mehrit Centre in self-regulation: Karl has an absolute wealth of knowledge and experience that he can share with the world and I am so excited to have him on the show.

šŸ™ A huge thank you to Karl for taking time out of his schedule to help us better understand the role of social and emotional learning. Also, thank you to Dan (@gym_stover) for getting involved during our Q&A session!

Health Month - Bringing Your School Community Together Through Health

Health Month - Bringing Your School Community Together Through Health

For the past 10 years, I've used the month of May to bring my school community together through a variety of health-based programs, challenges, and advocacy pieces. I call the whole initiative "Health Month" and it honestly helped transform the way my school focused on health and wellness.

Health Month is an opportunity for you to boost your program's visibility, strengthen partnerships and relationships with families, engage your faculty, and - most importantly - create fun, memorable, learning-based experiences for your students!

The initiative can be broken down into five parts:

šŸ—“ Month-Long Challenges

šŸ’Ŗ Physical Activity Week

šŸ§  Mental Health Week

šŸŽ Nutrition Week

šŸ˜“ Sleep Week

Although I cover each of these parts in the podcast, feel free to check out the five blog posts I wrote to complement this episode to see some of the visuals I created and find even more details on Health Month's different resources and challenges. Just click the links above to jump to each blog post!

The version of Health Month that I share in this episode is the product of ten years of tinkering, designing, listening, and evolving. That said, you can access all of the resources I've created for Health Month (including the email templates I sent to parents) in the Health Month Teacher Pack.Ā

This year has been incredibly tough on schools and their communities (not to mention their physical education teachers!) I know from experience that Health Month has the power to unite your school's community all while positioning you as the healthy school champion who makes that happen. I hope that this episode - in combination with the Health Month blog post mini-series and the Health Month Teacher Pack - provides you with everything you need to bring Health Month to your school and give your students, faculty, admin, staff, and families something to cheer about!

As always, thanks for listening and happy teaching! šŸ™Œ

The Seeds We Sow: Our Teaching Beyond Teaching

The Seeds We Sow: Our Teaching Beyond Teaching

Here's a different kind of episode! Think of this as "Story Time with Joey".

I recently got to hear my friend/mentor Artie Kamiya share a story he called "The Boy, The Rope, & The Truth". The story touched on the lasting impact that teachers can have on the lives of the students they teach.

For today's story time episode, I wanted to share a few stories from my teaching that highlighted the role of our work as educators and how it goes beyond just standards and outcomes.

I hope you enjoy it! Thanks for listening, subscribing, and sharing!

Assessment, Program Goals, & Colleagues: My First Listener Q&A!

šŸŽ‰ Here is my first-ever Q&A episode!

After hesitating on doing one of these forever, I finally decided to dive in and give this a go. In this episode, I do my best to answer the following three questions (and shout out to the three awesome listeners who shared!):

1. What are your favourite forms of assessment? (submitted by
Hector/@hrico90 from Chicago, IL)
2. What are the main skills a student should have when they finish a #physed programme? (submitted by Liam/@olivertwist_2 from the UK/Malaysia)
3. How have you successfully developed meaningful and productive professional relationships with non-H/PE teachers? (submitted by Daniel/@superdanpe from Lexington, KY)

I'll be answering additional questions that were submitted in future editions of this Q&A series! If you'd like to submit a question yourself, you can do so here: https://t.co/VpvVIxzIYx?amp=1

My 2020 Tech Stack

My 2020 Tech Stack

I oftentimes have to resist the urge to spend time talking about tech. I could waste hours and hours on sites like Product Hunt and YourStack where professionals share insights into the apps they include in their workflows (their tech "stacks").Ā

That being said, it's January and I was looking for a fun way to shake the last remaining holiday vibes and get my mind back into content creation mode. I decided now would be a fine time to sit down and share the apps, tools, gadgets, and gizmos that I made the most use of in 2020.

Be sure to check out the blog post I typed up to complement this episode of The #PhysEd Show Podcast in which I share links to everything I mentioned!
