Episode #064 - How to Revive a Failing Facebook Campaign - Matt Mason
It’s Monday morning. I just sat down with my favorite cup of coffee and opened up my computer. I’m about to dive into my weekly reports, ready to count the pennies I’ve gained over the past week from my Facebook campaigns. I notice that seemingly overnight, our spend and conversion numbers have dropped off. I panic, but it’s cool because at least it isn’t Friday afternoon at 4:30, am I right? As I dig in, I notice the drops in both metrics are primarily coming from one campaign. Not just any campaign. My most trusted, go-to, evergreen campaign. Has this happened to you? It’s happened to me several times over the course of this year. I’m convinced that if you do enough Facebook advertising, you’ll run into this exact scenario at some point. It happened to me with one of my larger B2B lead generation clients, and it happened fast. Tune in as we dive into: - Matt's story of how he made the switch from financial retirement specialist to running Facebook ads at an agency - His method and tactics for thinking about targeting audiences on Facebook - And why he's adapted his strategy to focus on consistent conversion volume rather granular audience If you have run a Facebook campaign and saw results tank over night then this is an episode for you.

Google Rolls Out Booking Buttons to More Local Businesses Previously available only to some local panel results, such as salons and spas, the “Reserve with Google” booking feature is now open to more service categories. Google Launches a New Way to Pay on Mobile Devices The “pay with Google” option ties all your saved cards on file together in a single interface. The larger idea here is to make checkout speedier for mobile users and increase conversions for retailers. Facebook officially launches Explore Feed on desktop to boost Pages’ posts This week, Facebook officially launched a new feed on desktop that presents people with posts from Pages they don’t follow and posts that aren’t likely to show up in their regular news feed. It’s called Explore Feed and subtitled “top posts for you from across Facebook.” The company rolled out the alternative News Feed on mobile earlier this year. On both mobile and desktop, the Explore Feed can be found within the “Explore” menu that lists similar non-News Feed feeds, such as Trending News and City Guides. Facebook Acquires Rising Social App tbh to Quell Competition Tbh, which stands for “to be honest,” is an anonymized polling app that allows people to share how they feel about friends. Linkedin Is Rolling Out Autoplay Video Ads LinkedIn will start selling video ads to a test group, planning to eventually bring them to all advertisers. The ads will look like other LinkedIn videos that users can watch in their feed, and will autoplay without sound. Twitter Introduces a New Video-Centric Ad Format Twitter has unveiled a new ad format called the Video Website Card, “ a creative format that combines the power of video with the ability to drive users back to a site to learn more or take action in the moment.” Instagram Redesigns Call-to-Action Bar Instagram is tweaking ads’ call-to-action bars to better blend in with an ad’s photo or video. Instead of blue, the bar will dynamically change to the main color contained in the ad’s photo or video. Instagram may be able to insert more ads — and relieve Facebook’s ad-load pressure, which is expected to decelerate the company’s ad-revenue growth this year — without overdoing it. AdWords “Days to Conversion” Shows How Long it Takes Users to Convert A new report in Google AdWords will show advertisers roughly how long it takes users to convert after clicking on an ad. This data should help advertisers to better optimize their campaigns and ad units. Google AdWords’ days to conversion segment can be applied to reports in both the regular and new AdWords experience. Report: More Marketers Seen Boosting Amazon Ad Budgets Compared To Google, FB North American marketers are more likely to increase their marketing budgets for Amazon in the next year than they are for Google, Bing, Facebook or Twitter, according to new research. A study by ClickZ Intelligence, produced with GroupM search shop Catalyst, has found that 63% of companies advertising on Amazon are planning to increase their Amazon budgets over the next 12 months, compared to 54% for Google, 53% for Facebook, 27% for Bing and 23% for Twitter. The report also found that only 15% of marketers agree they are using Amazon Marketing Services (AMS) to its full potential, while only 17% say they have a fully defined AMS strategy. UK government considers classifying Google and Facebook as publishers The internet groups are considered conduits of information rather than publishers under UK law, meaning they have limited responsibility for what appears on their sites. However, the chairman of the media regulator Ofcom said on Tuesday she believed the likes of Google and Facebook were publishers, raising the prospect that they could eventually face more regulation. Bradley said she was wary of labelling internet companies publishers but that the government wanted to find a balance between harnessing the benefits of the web while making it safe for users and protecting intellectual property. “I am looking into this. I am not sure the publisher definition in UK law would necessarily work in the way that people would like it to work. I think it would end up being very restrictive and make the internet not work in the way we want it to work."

The Week In Ad Tech Headlines (Oct 2-6th)
Google Doubles AdWords Budgets and Advertisers are Unhappy Google has made a significant change to the way AdWords budgets can be used, and the advertising community is not the least bit happy. Campaigns are now able to spend up to twice their average daily budget. The means on high traffic days, costs could soar as high as double the budget you have set. Shopping on Instagram is Growing with Shopify Shopify merchants continue to benefit from the powerful integration between Shopify’s online store and Facebook’s product catalog. Once selected, merchants can choose to connect this catalog in Instagram without any extra effort. Facebook Partners with ZipRecruiter As It Ramps Up In Jobs Facebook will now integrate with ZipRecruiter — an aggregator that allows those looking to fill jobs to post ads to many traditional job boards, as well as sites like LinkedIn, Google and Twitter — to boost the number of job ads available on its platform targeting its 2 billion monthly active users. LinkedIn's Adding Snapchat-Like Geofilters for Conferences and Events Yes, LinkedIn is also copying Snapchat - though their use-case is a little different, and does make a lot of sense. As part of their new native video tools, LinkedIn’s giving conference attendees the opportunity to add dedicated event frames to the videos they create while attending such functions. Snapchat to Launch Augmented Reality Art Platform Snapchat plans to launch a new augmented reality art platform featuring pop artist Jeff Koons and others. It will allow art to be pinned to specific locations in augmented reality so users can see it when they hold up their phones in the right spot. Now Hashtags Work on Pinterest! Starting today, when you include hashtags in the description for a new Pin, Pinners can visit a feed of all the Pins that share that hashtag. Whether those Pins are promoted or not, the freshest Pins will always appear right up top. [CHART] Search Marketers Shift Gears as Consumer Habits Change Search ad spending continues to grow robustly in the US, largely due to mobile. Mobile growth is so strong that overall spending increases are in the double digits, despite declines in desktop-based search ad outlays. Twitter to launch in-stream video ads in the UK Twitter plans to announce the launch of in-stream video ads in the UK at its session tomorrow for IAB Digital Upfronts. Twitter first launched in-stream video ads in the US in April this year as it ramped up its investment in video and content. The offering allows brands to have in-stream ads around premium content. Now, Twitter just needs to prove users want to watch these kinds of shows. How Amazon is readying its blitz on the ad industry Amazon continues to make serious inroads into the advertising business. Its latest move: a new office in Manhattan that it says will bring 2,000 jobs, mostly in advertising, to the city — and closer to Madison Avenue. Multiple media agency executives in New York said they’ve been hearing more from Amazon reps who are trying to sell them and their clients on Amazon advertising. Another executive said he’s hearing from Amazon more, and Amazon has hired programmatic specialists from his agency in New York. Yahoo Gemini Gets New Features

The Week In Ad Tech Headlines (Sept 25-29)
Twitter Doubles Character Limit to 280 We understand since many of you have been Tweeting for years, there may be an emotional attachment to 140 characters – we felt it, too. But we tried this, saw the power of what it will do, and fell in love with this new, still brief, constraint. Facebook Adds a New Messages Ad Objective to Drive Messenger Business Facebook's introducing a new messages objective for ads which will help businesses raise awareness of their Messenger presence (and bots) and directly connect more users to the option. Custom Affinity Audiences & Video Ad Sequencing Coming to Youtube Ads Custom audiences are most valuable when paired with creative that is relevant to them. But personalization at scale can be difficult—new video creative is pricey and takes time to make. Bing Ads & LinkedIn Graphs Integration Underway What that means practically for advertisers remains to be seen, but as both graphs currently power the ad targeting capabilities of each platform, the natural assumption is that advertisers will be able to harness data from both graphs and use it in campaigns across Bing Ads and LinkedIn. On Monday, van der Kooi announced that Microsoft is integrating the LinkedIn Graph with Microsoft’s Audience Intelligence Graph. = better targeting 2 Million Monthly Advertisers on Instagram (Doubling in 6 Months) Our business community has grown to two million advertisers, up from one million advertisers back in March. People come to Instagram every day to share their passions and connect with what matters, and they are spending more time than ever on the platform producing and exploring content, especially mobile video. Target and Pinterest Are Teaming Up On An Exclusive Partnership Instead of typing “modern crib” into a text search bar (and sifting through thousands of results), you simply snap a picture of your Snapchat launches sponsored 3D World Lenses, starting with Blade Runner Snapchat is taking its World Lenses augmented reality feature and opening them up to brands. Snap’s Imran Khan just announced the availability of the new advertising product on stage at Advertising Week New York, along with launch partners Warner Bros and Bud Light, both of which will be debuting branded 3D World Lenses as part of marketing campaigns. Domino’s is starting to see pizza orders come through Amazon Alexa Domino’s is letting people order pizza through voice-controlled devices, and the early results are promising. One in five customers who can order a pizza with one click through the pizza chain’s Easy Orders option has asked Amazon Alexa instead, two months after making the feature available there, said Nick Dutch, head of digital for Domino’s UK.

The Week In Ad Tech Headlines (Sept 18-22)
This week on The PPC Show, Paul and JD break down the top 9 headlines and trends in ad tech and digital marketing for the week of September 18-22nd. 1) Facebook Removes 4 Ad Targeting Options of Profile Details To help ensure that targeting is not used for discriminatory purposes, Facebook is removing these self-reported targeting fields until we have the right processes in place to help prevent this issue. As people fill in their education or employer on their profile. the 4 categories are people’s employers, schools, fields of study and job titles. Psyche! We added them back! 2) Facebook Launches Dynamic Creative Tool Facebook has a new trick up its sleeve. It’s called “dynamic creative,” and it’s a tool available in Power Editor and the newly updated Ads Manager. Here is what it does, how to use it, and why. It does so by taking components like images, videos, titles, descriptions, CTAs, etc. and runs them as different combinations across audiences. While the total asset number is 30, you can use a maximum of 5 titles, 10 images or 10 videos, 5 bodies of text, 5 descriptions, and 5 CTAs. Also note that you can use images OR videos, and can’t mix in the same ad set. 3) Pinterest Grows to 200 Million Monthly Active Users Pinterest has reached a new milestone of 200 million users. The platform reached 175 million users back in April, and now, Pinterest has announced that their community has expanded to 200 million MAU – up 40% year-over-year. 4) Pinterest’s interest-based ad-targeting options swell to more than 5,000 Pinterest is increasing the number of interest-based ad-targeting options offered to advertisers from roughly 400 to more than 5,000, thanks to the social network/search engine’s updated index of more than 100 billion pins. Last year the company acquired mobile ad-tech firm URX Taste Graph For example, if someone uses Pinterest to research kitchen remodeling ideas, that user may not want to continuing seeing organic and paid pins related to home decor long after the remodel is completed. Rolling end of October 5) Ring in the Holidays with New Google Merchant Center Tools Luckily, getting your product data in shape has never been easier with new Merchant Center tools. The new feeds experience and Opportunities are here just in time for you to win this holiday season. The Week In Ad Tech Headlines (Sept 11-15)
Show Notes 1) Facebook Announces Major Updates to Ads Manager The updated Ads Manager interface is designed to feel familiar without sacrificing any capabilities advertisers enjoyed from the old Power Editor or Ads Manager. “By focusing our efforts on improving a single platform, we hope to bring greater efficiency to our advertisers.” 7 Major Updates for Facebook Advertisers 2) Twitter is Reportedly Working on a 'Tweetstorm' Feature This, reportedly, is an in-development Twitter function which would enable you to type streams of content, beyond 140 characters, which the tool would then separate into numbered tweetstorms, without you having to do so yourself. Need features for news users, not power users. Cons: Flat 328M MAU while FB increases (+2 b), LinkedIn (500 million) Pros: 74% of users use Twitter as a news source 3)Pinterest crosses 200 million monthly active users In April, the company said it hit 175 million monthly active users, so it seems it’s been able to grow pretty methodically in the past year or so. That’s going to be a good sign for the company, which set some very ambitious targets in early 2015 but has since had to recalibrate it. Pinterest recently raised a $150 million financing round at a $12.3 billion valuation. With that financing round, Pinterest was making a full-court press into visual search, which it is trying to pitch as its core competency. More than 75% of sign-ups are coming from outside the U.S. now as it makes a big push internationally. More than half of its users come from outside the U.S., and impressions for the app grew 50% year-over-year. 4) New AdWords UAC Feature: The Creative Asset Report We’re also excited to tell you about a new feature in UAC called the Creative Asset Report. This feature will let you understand what creative assets are working with your audience. Add assets like text and videos and Google tells you what is working. Would be cool if they did this for text ads. You write a headline and copy and give sitelinks and they mix and match. They kinda do this with dynamic ads? 5) Display Advertising Stats 2017: SEMrush Study Whether you are tentatively planning your first display advertising campaign or can already create one in your sleep, you will still need data to come up with an effective action plan. Leaderboard - spend your time optimizing that ad size. 6) [Chart] How Marketers Are Deciding Where to Put Their Media Dollars More than three-quarters of survey respondents said that they look at the channels that best reach their target audience when determining media budget allocations, per the report. 36% channels that our mgmt trusts Cross-channel (digital & traditional): 21%; TV: 20%; Cross-device (online & mobile): 19%; Online advertising (desktop/mobile): 16%; Mobile advertising & apps (13%); and Other traditional media (11%) 7) New Ads Reporting Feature in Quora Ads Manager Many of our advertising partners have been asking for a way to receive ongoing performance reports for their ad campaigns. To start addressing those needs, we've launched a new feature that will enable you to receive a one time or ongoing scheduled .csv file of daily campaign data at the individual ad level. This will enable you to leverage the most granular data we can provide in any analysis tool of your choice to better understand how your campaigns are performing. You can effectively slice and dice the data how you'd like, to understand your campaigns better. Check out the feature on the new "Email Reports" tab of your ads manager. The feature does not currently provide the ability to aggregate campaign data higher than the ad level, but you can filter down to only receiving the daily ad level data for a given campaign, ad set, or ad.

Gartner is predicting that by 2020, 85% of our relationships with a company will be managed without human communication. 2) Digital personal assistants are becoming the new browser and what does that mean for advertisers? 3) AI is really the brains behind it all and how we can better use it to understand our audiences. Episode #057 - Quora's Laser Focus on Advertiser ROI with Sarah Smith
This week on The PPC Show we're joined by Sarah Smith, VP of Sales and Operations at Quora. Fun Fact: She's the 45th user on Quora and a former music teacher from Wisconsin. Four big highlights from this week's show. 1) The benefits of investing in Quora. 2) Sarah talks types of advertisers seeing success with Quora Ads today (diversity of verticals - B2B SaaS, Consumer, Education, Recruiting, startups and public companies). Facebook is great for the top of funnel marketing, but there is no intent, and at the bottom of the funnel, AdWords is great to capture the last click. Quora is the only platform that can be used to influence buyers during the evaluation/consideration phase of the purchase process with relevant content and ads. 3) We discuss latest features released and how to get started - recently launched website retargeting in addition to topic based targeting which captures high intent. 4) Quora's laser focus on advertiser ROI - In addition to offering a conversion pixel from the very early days of the platform, advertisers are seeing meaningful results. For example, Winnie has seen 4-5x better conversion rates than other platforms and AdStage has seen roughly 2x lower CPAs than other platforms.
