Exploring Rudy Lyle's Impact on the Banjo and Bluegrass Music with Max Wareham
As a banjo player, Max Wareham is captivated by the formative events that led to the prominence of bluegrass music, and the impact of the artists who came before him. One of those artists is Rudy Lyle, a banjo player who performed with early Americana and bluegrass luminaries, including Bill Monroe, Patsy Cline, and many more. Max explores Rudy's influence on those artists -- and on the decades of bluegrass and Americana music that followed -- in his new book, Rudy Lyle: The Unsung Hero of the Five-String Banjo. A Highly Seductive Quinn Spinn History Lesson (ft. The OG Quinn Spinn Family)
The OG family has been traveling a bit, but that doesn't stop the crew from getting together and recording a highly seductive episode of The Quinn Spinn! The Quinn visits Scotty and L at The New Doghouse in New York, while JD joins remotely from vacation in Ohio. We hear about Scotty's latest encounter with Coach McQuakes, explore the fried wonders of the Minnesota State Fair, and share nine years (and maybe more) worth of Quinn Spinn memories. Also, L returns with an Inappropriate Word, and Something For Your Ears contains a tidbit about Dirty Heads' new album, 'Midnight Control.' Cheers to 9 Years (Solo Mission #15)
Nine years ago today — August 17, 2013 — everything that Underground Music Collective has come to be began in my childhood bedroom with nothing more than an idea; a desire to create an outlet, separate from the rigors of corporate America. Unbeknownst to me, The Quinn Spinn — a spiritual successor to my slapstick college radio show of the same name — was our point of singularity. I had a blue Dell laptop, and I went out the next day and bought a USB microphone from Best Buy. I had never tried starting a podcast before, and admittedly, it felt strange to be committing to and investing in something new. I didn’t know where it would lead, or even how long it would last. I’m glad I pushed through that initial resistance — not to mention, all of the resistance I’ve encountered in the years since. Nine years later, we’re still standing, and this means of escape from corporate America has gone on to reach countless thousands of musicians, creatives, and human beings the world over. We’ve reached this point with perhaps more optimism for the future than ever before. As we honor where we’ve been, let’s take a look at where we’re going on today’s special 9th Anniversary Solo Mission of The Quinn Spinn. Shirtless Scotty and Getting Real About Mental Health (ft. The OG Quinn Spinn Family)
The real question is not whether Scotty does this episode shirtless. It's how many members of the OG family spend the episode partially nude -- and on 6/9, no less! 8 Years Later: Thoughts on the Creative Journey, Its Challenges, and Creating Abundance
After a majorly transformative summer in my personal and professional life, I felt compelled to use The Quinn Spinn's 8th anniversary to share some revelations that have come to me as a byproduct of my own creative journey. That journey began with this podcast and the desire to have an impact -- the desire to feel as though I am contributing something to the world, beyond checking society's boxes. This road-less-traveled has brought forth so many incredible moments. At the same time, it has brought about unique challenges that appear at the intersection of the hustle and my presence in other areas of life. As I've ridden those waves, I've come to a point where I understand what it truly means to create and spread abundance, and how that serves life's bigger picture. It's been an amazing ride to this point, and there is still much more to come. Thank you for being along for the journey. -G The Quinn Spinn is recorded and produced at Helping Our Music Evolve (H.O.M.E.), Nashville, TN. Taylor is also a musician with a number of projects in and around Nashville, as well as an avid Yankees fan. We touch all of that and a whole lot more on today's Quinn Spinn! Hard Work and Worldly Perspective: The Southern Gothic's Connor Christian
The Southern Gothic released their six-song EP, Burnin' Moonlight, this past Friday, December 4. Before the release, we sat down with frontman Connor Christian to learn about the record, his favorite moments, and the difference between crafting a release in the studio, as opposed to on the road. We go much deeper than that. We discuss Connor's well-traveled youth, spent in locations all over the world. In addition, we hear the band's story of consistent hard work that took The Southern Gothic from an Atlanta-area cover band, to a versatile juggernaut that has opened for the likes of Willie Nelson, ZZ Top, and many more! Thankful for 2020? (QuaranTimes #8)
We know, we know... everybody has their dirty laundry to air about 2020. But, what if we paused instead, and took this opportunity to count all of our reasons for gratitude? That's what we do on this edition of QuaranTimes. We discussed what we've learned -- about life and ourselves -- to this point in the year, and our reasons to give thanks. And, if you're looking for something more lighthearted, we also discuss Scotty Rock's ambitions to compete on Supermarket Sweep, we have a rather invasive Stupid News, and generally speaking, there's plenty of inappropriate humor to go around! A Family Reunion, Done the Old Way!
Thanksgiving is a time to reconnect with family and friends. For us, that means reuniting part of our original Quinn Spinn family. Over the summer, three of the on-air personalities from our original 2013-15 run -- The Quinn, Scotty Rock, and L -- got together to catch up. The end result of the hang? An impromptu episode of The Quinn Spinn, recorded on our old, 12-channel Peavey mixer, that we've been saving for a special occasion just like this. Join The Quinn, Scotty Rock, and L as they chat about personal growth, the grind of the independent creative, and maybe even a little piece of Stupid News. Happy Thanksgiving!
