Ep.104: Iowa's Slaughterhouse

Ep.104: Iowa's Slaughterhouse

Dove Horror Story Alert!  First let's learn about Iowa's meat packing union and then learn how capitalism killed it.  Iowa's meat packing union understood the importance of racial solidarity and workers' rights, it not only secured strong wages for its workers but desegregated the town as well.....but then along comes big business..... A new packing plant, tough working conditions, all leads to the workers either moving away or quitting the job.  Either way, big business brings in replacement workers, many refugees from other countries.  When Covid hits, this little town becomes one of the biggest hot spots for infection disproportionately affecting the meat packing workers because........the business did NOTHING to prepare for Covid even though they knew it could happen fifteen (15) years before Covid-19 struck the town.  Listen, learn then activate!

Ep.102: Susan La Flesche Picotte

The Red Dove honors Indigenous Peoples Day with this Dove Tale all about the first Indigenous woman to become a doctor.  Susan was born in 1865, at a time the Omaha Indigenous people were "assimilating" into white American culture, she would later write about walking a tightrope in between honoring her culture and assimilation.  Susan attended U.S. government schools, college and medical school.  Upon receiving her medical degree, Susan moved back to the Omaha Reservation and spends the rest of her life caring for her people.  In 1913 Susan's life goal was achieved when she built a hospital for her people.  Susan died in 1915, but her legacy as "Dr. Susan" to her people remains alive today.  Presently, health care services is still an issue for the Omaha people but they also broke ground on both an $8.3 million expansion of the Carl T. Curtis Health Education Center in Macy and a new clinic in Walthill.  We close out the episode with a reading of one of Susan's essays depicting the conditions, trials and tribulations Susan face on the daily.  Listen, learn then activate!!!

Ep.86: Donna's Juvenile Justice - Part 2

This is the second, and final. part of our horror story about Judge Donna's juvenile courtroom and detention center.  The cops have entered the elementary school building, poised to arrest four Black female students (4th and 6th graders) for a crime that doesn't exist (but they don't know that yet!).  The arrests could not have gone more poorly, resulting in all the students being detained in Lynne's "filter system" and experiencing more trauma.  However, the parents rise up and fight back against Chrystal Templeton and the whole county.  We conclude with a "Where are they now?" of Donna, Lynne, Chrystal, Amy and Sherry, wrapped in a deep discussion of America's juvenile court system, Donn's juvenile "justice" in particular.  Listen, learn then activate!

Ep.79: The Combahee River Collective

Ep.79: The Combahee River Collective

The Combahee River Collective was created in 1974 by Demita Frazier, Beverly Smith, and Barbara Smith.  The Collective's name refers to a resistance action by Harriet Tubman in 1863 in South Carolina, the Combahee River Raid. Tubman freed more that 750 slaves in this unique military campaign, the only one in U.S. history conceived and directed by a woman.  They experienced much disillusionment with the second wave of American feminism from the 1960s along with the civil rights, black nationalism, and Black Panther movements. Thus they wanted their new platform to include struggles against racial, sexual, heterosexual, and class oppression.  Equally dismayed by the direction of the feminist movement, which they believed to be dominated by middle-class white women, and the suffocating masculinity in Black-nationalist organizations, they set out to formulate their own politics and strategies in response to their distinct experiences as Black women.  The Collective believed that if Black women were successful in their struggles and movements, they would have an impact far beyond their immediate demands. As they put it, “If Black women were free, it would mean that everyone else would have to be free since our freedom would necessitate the destruction of all the systems of oppression.”  Listen, learn then activate!
