By The Rewind Movie Podcast

Drawing on a decade-plus friendship whose roots stretch back to their film-obsessed student days, Gali and Devlin cast an eye backwards to the movies that kickstarted their love of film. In their Throwback series, each will take turns picking a title that they consider seminal to their youth, and watch again to determine whether they wasted their precious childhoods sitting in the dark with these VHS tapes, or if their movie touchstones still hold up today.

Basic Instinct (1992) - Episode 30

Basic Instinct (1992) - Episode 30

He got off before he got offed! We’re revelling in the excess of Paul Verhoeven’s 1992 erotic thriller Basic Instinct, as once again Matt joins Gali and Devlin in the interrogation room.

Trigger-happy ball of machismo Detective Nick Curran (Michael Douglas) gets himself in way over his head when the investigation of a mid-coitus murder leads him to icy blonde heiress Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone) and down a dangerous path of sex and death. Hitchcockian twists abound as Nick’s psychologist/on-off girl Dr. Beth Garner (Jeanne Tripplehorn) also becomes embroiled in the affair.

We discuss Douglas’ admirably sleaze-heavy career, Stone’s star-making turn, Verhoeven’s euro-smut brilliance and the demise of the major studio sex movie as we dare to revisit the film that we went to great lengths to hide from our parents. We were even allowed to have the volume turned up and everything.

Almost Famous (2000) - Episode 29

Almost Famous (2000) - Episode 29

We're flying high over Tupelo, Mississippi with the hottest band in America...and we're all about to die. Today's film-chooser Gali is joined on the road by Devlin and Patrick to revisit Cameron Crowe's OSCAR-winning rock 'n roll bildungsroman Almost Famous.

15 year old aspiring rock journalist William Miller (Patrick Fugit) catches the break of a lifetime after a chance encounter with one of his favourite bands coincides with an offer from Rolling Stone magazine and he takes off to cover Stillwater's 1973 tour. With some sage, albeit cynical words from hero Lester Bangs (Philip Seymour Hoffman) ringing in his ears, William finds himself drawn in to the world of charismatic guitarist Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup) and enigmatic "Band Aid" Penny Lane (a star-making turn for Kate Hudson), much to the dismay of his well-meaning but fierce mother (Frances McDormand).

Sharing the only true currency that means anything in this bankrupt world, our uncool hosts dive back in to their own wide-eyed teen years and check in 20 years later to see if their now crow-feet riddled, thirty-something eyes can still well up with joy when Tiny Dancer hits.

Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991) with Richard Jackson - Episode 28

Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991) with Richard Jackson - Episode 28

DINNER’S OVER, WORM DUDE. Bill S. Preston, Esq. and “Ted” Theodore Logan return from their travels across time in Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, with our heroes seemingly no closer to fulfilling the prophecy that Wyld Stallyns' most excellent music will unite the world and lead to a glorious, utopian future.

In fact, they are stuck in a run-down apartment working for nothing but pretzels and cheese. And things take a turn for the worse when a pair of evil robot doppelgangers turn up and throw them from a cliff to their deaths. Not that this is the end – after giving Death himself the slip with a severe Melvin, they set out on a race against time to save the future from the villainous gym teacher Chuck De Nomolos.

On this episode we are delighted to be joined by Richard Jackson, of the YouTube review channel Val Verde Broadcasting. Along with co-hosts Gali and Devlin we discuss personal hells, Nerf-dart couture and illicit 1990s cable pornography as we witness more strange things afoot at the Circle K. STATION!

Memoirs of an Invisible Man (1992) - Episode 25

Memoirs of an Invisible Man (1992) - Episode 25

It's lonely, isn't it, when you're a freak? On this Throwback episode we look at the John Carpenter-directed Chevy Chase sci-fi-romance-thriller Memoirs of an Invisible Man.

Laconic stocks analyst Nick Halloway comes to regret the hungover nap he takes while skipping a lecture at the mysterious Magnascopics Institute, when an industrial accident renders the building invisible with him trapped inside. Pursued by a hostile intelligence operative (Sam Neill) intent on acquiring this invaluable asset as a spy or killing him if he refuses, Nick hides out in a beach house and runs into the beautiful stranger (Darryl Hannah) he met the night before befalling his fate.

Marrying Hitchcockian suspense to droll, noirish narration and groundbreaking visual effects, the film was meant to be Chevy Chase’s gateway to serious acting success. Financially it didn’t play out that way, but are Devlin’s nostalgic and positive memories of the film still intact? Were new viewers Gali and Patrick as unimpressed as ticket-buyers in 1992? Join us as we discuss the career paths that led to the unusual pairing of Chase and Carpenter, rewatch one of his least heralded films, and relive Devlin’s cringeworthy night at the theatre with the venerable Mr Chase.

Lawnmower Man 2 : Beyond Cyberspace (1996) - Episode 21 BARGAIN BIN

I’VE BECOME THE CHIP! Gali and Devlin are jacking in again for a second dip in to the Bargain Bin virtual world of Lawnmower Man 2: Beyond Cyberspace/Jobe’s War!

Following the bonkers original, Cybergod Jobe Smith is now a bafflingly recast, surgically repaired double amputee played by Matt Frewer, indentured to a mean-spirited techno institute to become the architect of a new digital world using the magical Chiron Chip. The Chiron’s creator, brilliant scientist-turned-dread locked hippie weirdo and blouse enthusiast Dr. Benjamin Trace (Patrick Bergin), is enlisted by returning child star Austin O’Brien’s Peter to help save his friend from another round of power-mad mania.

Join us in this inexplicable futurescape of technobabble, pre-teen pandering, hyperactive improv, and superfluous vacuum cleaner tubes, as we try and make sense of this aggressively bizarre sequel.

The Lawnmower Man (1992) - Episode 11 BARGAIN BIN

CyberChrist on a bike! A second dip in to the Bargain Bin yields the 1992 virtual reality trip THE LAWNMOWER MAN, starring Pierce Brosnan and Jeff Fahey.

Improbably named scientician Dr. Larry Angelo is using this latest technology to increase intelligence, and has the perfect subject in naïve, developmentally challenged stereotype Jobe Smith, a local lawnmower whose new-found powers quickly grow out of control.

Murder chimps, shirtless diarising, inconsistent pronunciations of the word “Fahey”, and excessive evaluation of the world’s first cybersex scene: Gali, Devlin and Patrick are strapped in to their gyroscopes and ready to jack in to the neural net.

Demons (1985) - Episode 5

As the dark nights draw in and autumn clamps its icy jaws around the last squirming remnants of summer, Devlin reminisces about his first brush with an actual horror movie: Lamberto Bava’s Italo-splatter mainstay Demons.
A mysterious masked stranger invites a motley selection of viewers to a grand picture-house for a free movie screening they’ll never forget, as the infernal shenanigans on screen spill out in to the auditorium itself and turn the assembled audience in to murderous, possessed…well, demons.
Soft rock punks scraping cocaine out of car upholstery, the world’s saddest anniversary night out, Chekov’s samurai sword and Berlin’s best pimp. What will first time viewer Gali make of this hot nonsense? Will Devlin find his childhood memories popped like a giant green hell-pimple? It’s all in this episode of The Rewind Movie Podcast!

Predator 2 (1990) - Episode 3

Predator 2 (1990) - Episode 3

In this sequel to the beloved Arnie classic, Devlin becomes the hunter and baits Gali into a potential rant as they find Predator 2 in their crosshairs.

The Predator is doing some sight-seeing in LA, and Danny Glover is somehow the only one who can stop him.

This has it all: sun, sweat, gangs and Gary Busey. Before Jack Black in 'I Still Know What You Did Last Summer', Predator 2 held the trophy for the most ridiculous depiction of a Jamaican character.

The door swings both ways- how will Gali and Devlin rate this film now that they are no longer 8 years old?!

Lets go Back to the Future (1997) and see the lions, tigers and bears, oh my.

Scarface (1983) - Episode 2

Scarface (1983) - Episode 2

This time out, Gali has picked Brian De Palma's classic 1983 gangster movie, SCARFACE.

Al Pacino inhabits one of his most iconic roles as the ambitious Cuban immigrant Tony Montana. We follow as he scales the drug trade in Miami, from lowly enforcer to gilded kingpin.

Put on your dancing shoes, turn up the neon, and rush rush to the yeyo: with ethnologically questionable casting and a killer soundtrack, will Gali and Devlin get high on their own supply, or grab the chainsaw and cut the movie to pieces?

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1994) Episode 1

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1994) Episode 1

With the first pick, Devlin chooses Kenneth Branagh's Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Hot on the heels of Bram Stoker's Dracula, we examine this obstensibly faithful adaptation (hence the authorial namecheck!)

Genius young physician-in-training Victor Frankenstein (Branagh himself) uses personal tragedy as the catalyst for his quest to defy death itself, by creating an entirely new life, but soon finds that there are consequences to dabbling in the realms of the gods.

Featuring floppy dancing, quasi-incestuous relationships, John Cleese's giant teeth and Robert De Niro as Sloth from the Goonies's angry older brother, will Gali and Devlin find a jolt of pure electricity, or just a table full of decaying meat parts?
