Over the summer, high school students created a club to address menstrual inequity and menstrual stigma. We spoke with members of the club, called PERIOD, about their mission to provide access to affordable menstrual products and be a forum for period education.

Anna Welsh, Marin Hunter, Chethan Chandra, Abby Sable and Helene Aandal asked students, “If you could add a class to the high school, what would you add and why?”

In the beginning of the school year, the Shaker School District gave students in grades five through twelve a Chromebook. We talked to students, administrators and teachers about the first semester of the one to one Chromebook policy.

The first issue of the Shakerite’s 90th volume is out now. Inside, stories discuss events and developments in Shaker Schools and the city as a whole, including elementary school tracking, athletic scholarships and the city of Shaker’s sustainability plan. We spoke with the Shakerite editors and reporters whose articles are featured in the issue about their experiences researching and writing their stories.

This fall, three high school sports teams competed in state level competitions. We spoke with athletes from the boy’s soccer team, girl’s field hockey team and the cross-country team about their experiences this season and hopes for the future.

The Shaker Schools Alumni Hall of Fame Assembly honored eight men and women who talked about their accomplishments with students. We spoke with Journalism I students who reported on the assembly about the inductees’ accomplishments, their messages to students and what the reporters learned about each inductee.

We spoke with a high schooler from Goslar, Germany who travelled to Shaker Heights as part of an exchange program with the high school. He talked with us about his experiences in the United States and the differences he sees between the United States and Germany.

Last year, fifth grade teacher Chante Thomas self-published two children’s books. We sat down with Thomas and two of her former students to discuss how being an author has impacted Thomas and her students.

The Class of 2019 graduates on June 5th. We spoke with graduating seniors about their favorite memories of the high school and their paths for next year.

Our investigatory podcast was influenced by the recent death of Aisha Fraser whose estranged husband is on trial for her murder. After completing our research, we decided to focus on Ms. Fraser’s murder in addition to the murders of high school students Lisa Pruett in 1990 and Penny Chang in 1999. We learned that the conversation about domestic violence is much bigger than one certain case or one law; that domestic abuse is a constant conversation that everyone must be educated about, so that we can take further strides to stop it. 

We submitted this podcast to the 2019 NPR Student Podcast Challenge on March 31. 

The second issue of the Shakerite’s 89th volume is out now. Inside, the stories respond to and investigate complaints raised at the November 8th community meeting. In our ninth episode, we speak to Shakerite editors and reporters about their experiences researching and writing their stories.
