English Translation

I saw the Beloved within the pupil of my eye.
Everywhere I looked, I saw the Beloved.

I circumambulated both the K’abah and the temple.
I found no one there and only saw You.

I looked everywhere to seek the truth.
But saw God’s home within the home of my heart.

To be a beggar at Your threshold is worthier than any kingship.
I realized that authority over the two worlds comes when desires are relinquished.

Goya, I’ve heard this calling ever since eternity.
That the summit of the world in the Origin.

“What I did not expect was the amount of growth and learning that happened in the off-hours. Just sitting around in the Langar hall talking to Sikhs from very different walks of life or late night jam sessions in the Diwan hall learning different styles of Kirtan. All of that stuff I didn’t really expect because I had this image of this being a conference, we’re going to sit in the workshops and we’re going to exchange contact info.”

Sidaker, Ivraj Singh, discusses the power of Sidak and its impact on his life with Sidak Facilitator, Jasleen Kaur. They explore the boundless opportunities for growth and unexpected areas of enlightenment that come from the Sidak experience.

Sidak is designed as an adult learning experience. This means that there are many activities you will be asked to participate in, including organizing a cohort group, presenting group thoughts and ideas, leading a discussion on a given topic, listening to content delivery, and expressing new solutions to old problems. This style requires that you participate but, more importantly, that you grow as a leader. Your facilitators will monitor and present skills and knowledge needed at every level of learning. They will facilitate and help you learn, but real learning is up to you.

1’s Identification
Why do you need to Identify with 1?

Devagandhari Sovereign 10
No one can be saved without Hari’s Nam, 1’s Identification.
That 1 who controls the fourteen worlds, where can you run away from That 1? Pause-reflect.
Rama and Rahim can not ferry you across whose names you are repeating.
Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, the sun, and the moon are all under the control of death.
All wisdoms of Vedas, Puranas, and Quran call That 1 infinite.
Indra, Sheshanaga, and great sages intensely concentrated for eons, but they still could not concentrate on That 1.
Whose form and color can not be recognized; how can That 1 be called Shyam-Krishna?
You will only be free from the death-web if you cling to the feet of That 1.

Divine Creator
How do we recognize The One?

Devagandhari Sovereign 10
Do not mark any other except The One.
That Divine is ever capable of destroying and carving, recognize That as the Creator. Pause-reflect.
So what if the stone idols are worshiped in many ways with great love and consciousness?
Hands are tired of touching the stone idols, but there is no power in hands.
Rice, incense, and lamps are offered; the stone idols do not eat anything.
O ignorant! What power does a stone idol have that it can grant you a boon?
Reflect in mind, speech, and action that if a stone idol had any life, it would have given you something.
There is no liberation in other ways except in the refuge of The One Owner.

Creator Ruler
What is the Ruler?

Kalyan Sovereign 10
Do not accept anyone else created as the Creator.
Consider the First, the Unborn, the Unconquerable, and the Imperishable as the Supreme Ruler. Pause-reflect.
So what if many came as incarnations in this world, so what if Hari-Vishnu-Krishna killed ten or so demons?
Proclaimed himself to be brahma-creator after showing many plays.
The Divine is ever capable of destroying and carving; how can that 1 be shown and measured?
This is why no one can save themselves from the strike of the sword of All-Death.
O ignorant! Listen, how can the one who is drowned in the world-ocean ferry you across?
When you take refuge in World-Source, only then will you be free from the noose of death.

What is the Divine?

Sorath Sovereign 10
O Divine, You protect my honor.
You are Nilkantha, Narhari, Narayana, Nilbasan, and Banvari. Pause-reflect.
O Supreme Being, Supreme Ruler, Owner, Auspicious, Air-Consumer,
Madhava as the Great Light, Madhu-killer, Mandhata, and Mura-Killer as the Emancipator.
Vice-free, age-free, sleep-free, poison-free, hell-savior,
Ocean of compassion, seer of three-tenses, destroyer of bad-deeds.
Bow-wielder in hand, patience-possessor, earth-embracer, vice-free, sword-possessor.
I, of bad intellect, take refuge in Your feet; hold my hand to save me.

Who is the best mentor?

Ramkali Sovereign 10
O being, attach to the feet of the Supreme Being.
Why are you asleep in attachment’s sleep? Awaken sometime to be attentive! Pause-reflect.
O animal-like, why do you preach to others? You are not attached to the teachings.
Why are you collecting the poisons? When will you renounce the flavor of poisons?
Realize performing only the deeds as an illusion; love the principled deeds.
Always collect the remembrance, run away from the great sin.
Such that you don’t submit to the pain and the sin, you must confront the death-web.
If you always want all kinds of comforts, then drench yourself in the flavor of Hari-1.

The unique contexts and subversions these compositions reveal are a treat for those who yearn to get to know Guru Gobind Singh Sahib and those who yearn to celebrate Guru Gobind Singh Sahib.

In the second composition of the “Sabad Hajare Patisahi 10” (popularly Shabad Hazare Patshahi 10) series, Guru Gobind Singh Sahib emphasizes union with the 1. Guru Sahib disrupts fixation on yoga for union and offers developing the love for the 1 and feeling the identity of the 1.

In this third podcast, Harinder Singh and Jasleen Kaur explore what it means to earn union in comparison to transactional relationships with the divine. They also discuss what it means to sing as waves of love and deep knowledge arise from within, in comparison to the one-noted concentration of the yogis.

Yoga Disrupted
What kind of Yoga?

Ramkali Sovereign 10
O mind! Earn the union by this method:
Consider Truth as a horn, non-deception a necklace, and ascend ash of contemplation. Pause-reflect.
Control inner-self as holding a one-string instrument, and Nam-Identification as a support to receiving alms.
Experience the essence of Hari-1 as the sound of supreme strings; that's where melodious musical modes emerge.
Wave of color-love arises from melodic improvisations and compositions of songs of deep knowledge.
Gods, demons, and sages witness in amazement; those riding skies are in happiness.
Control inner-self as the instruction; practice self-restraint as garb; and unrecitable recitation as the recitation.
That’s how the body always remains golden; the fear of death doesn’t affect it.

Sabad Hajare Patisahi 10 - Sabad 01: Renunciation Redefined | The Sikh Cast | SikhRI

Introducing Sabad Hajare Patshahi 10, new translations and commentaries of Guru Gobind Singh Sahib's composition. Harinder Singh (Innovation Director) and Jasleen Kaur (Research Associate) discuss their learnings and challenges while engaging with the words of this composition. The unique contexts and subversions these compositions reveal are a treat for those who yearn to get to know Guru Gobind Singh Sahib and those who yearn to celebrate Guru Gobind Singh Sahib.

In the first composition of the “Sabad Hajare Patisahi 10” (popularly Shabad Hazare Patshahi 10) series, Guru Gobind Singh Sahib redefines everything yogic. Yoga is reframed as the original idea of union or the connection with the 1. Guru Sahib disrupts yogic rituals with practical things an everyday person can do, including those in the family.

In this second podcast, Harinder Singh and Jasleen Kaur explore the context of Indic paradigms, rituals, systems, and popular understandings that the Guru addresses in his reframing of renunciation and non-attachment. We also discuss translation decisions and challenges.

Renunciation Redefined
What kind of renunciation?

Ramkali Sovereign 10
O mind, adopt this kind of renunciation:
Consider all houses as the forest; remain non-attached within the mind. Pause-reflect.
Sexual restraint is matted hair, connection with the 1 is pilgrimage bathing; daily commitment is growing nails.
Wisdom is the Guru; let it instruct the inner-self, apply the ash of Nam-Identification.
Consume less, sleep even less; consider compassion and forgiveness as the love for the body.
Always be gentle and content; transcend three prescribed Indic virtues.
Do not bring lust, anger, pride, greed, stubbornness, and attachment into the mind.
Only then can inner-self envision the essence and realize the Supreme Being.

Ep65 - “On the platter are placed three things...” | Sabad of the Week

On the platter are placed three things, reflect on the Truth and the Contentment.
Ruler’s Immortal Nam1 is also placed on it,it is the support of all.
If someone eats it, if someone savors it,that one is emancipated.
This thing cannot be forsaken, daily, daily, keep it in the heart.

About the Series

Sabad is Infinite; we are very finite. This is our understanding at the moment, which was different yesterday and may evolve tomorrow, as we deepen our relationship with the Sabad. In this trans-creation, we have chosen to keep the repeating words in the Sabad same. We aspire to learn and retain the Divine attribute as used in the original Sabad and avoid terms like God or Lord.

Nam: Divine Identification | The Fragrance of Bhai Vir Singh

Join us as we delve into Bhai Vir Singh’s epic poem “Rana Surat Singh.” The poem unveils mystical love’s mysteries via 14,270 lines in thirty-five cantos. Mystical love is helical and circular in its workings. The poem artistically presents a passionate vision of a world beyond the divisions of time and space. It is a lustrous recollection written by the one who has gazed upon the mystical experience.

The poem begins with the hero’s death, Rana (King) Surat Singh, and its profound and shattering effect on his young widow, the Rani (Queen) Raj Kaur. At the onset of the poem, the poet makes us aware that the Rani’s love for the Rana was at a physical level. So immersed was the Rani in her love for the Rana that it blinded her to his illuminated and enlightened self. As much as the Rana wanted her to be a part of his spiritual journey, the Rani could not see him beyond his physical self.

As we become immersed in the poem, we witness the transformation of her physical yearnings into spiritual ones. We journey with her through the various stages of her inner development, from the Realm of Principle to the Realms of Knowledge, Effort, Grace, and Eternity—the final abode. Guided by a Guru-inspired being, the Rani is introduced to the “Love Path.”

In the fourth and final podcast, we discuss:
What is Nam-Divine Identification?
How is one to recite Nam?
Does Nam aid in one’s journey towards becoming a Gurmukh, Guru-oriented?

Several new South Asian nation-states were born as the British Raj ended in 1947. The Panjab of the Indus Valley civilization (3300-1300 BCE) and the Sikh Rulers (1710-1849) was annexed by the British in 1849 and partitioned by their Radcliffe line in 1947. Akalis have been representing the Sikh political consciousness since 1920.

Why are the significant sections of Panjabis and the Sikhs feeling estranged?
What are the historical, cultural, geopolitical, trade, and economic contexts and realities?
How can those mentioned above be addressed, given the current trends?

English Translation

Such is our deep connection with You,
That only with Your arrival, there is exuberance in the world.

In Your pathway, I have spread out,
My eyes and my heart—the only worthy possessions I could offer.

Have some compassion for the Divine’s faqīrs!
So that you may find bliss in this world.

Direct your heart towards the Divine at all times,
So you can cross the bridge of Sirāṭ with ease.

No one is at ease under the ever-turning sky,
So Goya, just move through this worn perpetual caravanserai.
