The Sikh funeral ceremony is crucial to Sikh culture as it emphasizes the belief in the impermanence of life, the significance of commemorating the departed with affection and admiration, and establishing a connection with IkOankar (the Divine). Death is essentially the end of human life; the rites and customs related to it are included in the funeral ceremony. The primary aim of this ceremony is to return the body to the natural elements from which it is formed by fire, water, soil, etc. Featuring: Sukhmann Kaur (https://sikhri.org/people/sukhmann-kaur) #GuruGranthSahib #GuruGranthSahibJi #Sikhism #SikhCommunity #Sikhs

Alahania is a mournful or sorrowful Panjabi folk song. When a person dies, friends and relatives usually visit the deceased’s family to share their sorrow and memories of their loved one’s life and deeds. Expressing such feelings creates the core of the folk poetic form Alahani. The Alahania composition revealed by Guru Nanak Sahib redirects and transforms the sorrow and grief of death and separation from loved ones into a serene state, urging the being to embrace the will of IkOankar (the Divine). I saw the Beloved within the pupil of my eye.
Everywhere I looked, I saw the Beloved.
I circumambulated both the K’abah and the temple.
I found no one there and only saw You.
I looked everywhere to seek the truth.
But saw God’s home within the home of my heart.
To be a beggar at Your threshold is worthier than any kingship.

Explore Sadd | The Guru Granth Sahib Project
Revealed to Baba Sundar, the great-grandson of Guru Amardas Sahib, Sadd holds great significance in the Sikh funeral ceremony and is recited during final rites.
In this composition, Baba Sundar records the last instructions from Guru Amardas Sahib for the Sikhs to observe when the Guru departs. These instructions cover spiritual and social guidance, interwoven with a historical narration.
'Sadd' refers to an invitation, a call, or a heartfelt cry, particularly within the Panjabi culture, where it invokes the imagery of calling out loudly to a loved one. When Guru Amardas Sahib (1479-1574 CE) realized that the time had come for him to leave the earthly realm, he sent an invitation to his family and disciples, conveying the message of his departure as per the call from IkOankar (the Divine).

In the Sikh faith, is God a man? | Ask SikhRI
In Sikh ideals, preference is not to use the term "God" as it often carries gendered imagery. Instead, we embrace ੴ pronounced as IkOankar, the genderless and transcendent Being. IkOankar is not just gender-neutral; it transcends gender. "Ik" signifies the 1, "Oankar" represents the creative and pervasive Force – so it’s the 1Force.

Is the Sikh religion called Sikhi or Sikhism? Does it matter? | Ask SikhRI
"I think it matters because what is our indigenous term? And what is the term which those who were studying us in the last hundred years started calling us? Our native term is Sikhi. Sikhism is something which was born out of the study of religions. “-ism” also implies that there is not a unity of doctrine, that there is too much multiplicity."

What does “Sikh” mean? | Ask SikhRI
When we look at the two meanings as they existed at the time (in Sanskrit and in Pali) and incorporate them into what we now call Sikhi, it actually means learners who are of the Guru.
Guru is a mentor, Guru in Sikhi is Perfection. A Sikh then becomes someone who is modelling their life as the Gurus lived it on earth.

Why does it seem that only men lead Sikh prayer services? | Ask SikhRI
In Sikhi (commonly known as Sikhism), women's fundamental equality exists in both private and public spheres and within personal and corporate relationships. Women possess the freedom to lead in any capacity without predefined roles. Nevertheless, despite these core principles, there are often observable disparities between theory and practice. This disconnection can be attributed to the influence of cultural factors and personal biases perpetuated by the broader hegemonic culture.
It's important to emphasize that these issues are not intrinsic to Sikhi. In Sikhi, there should be no restrictions or disempowerment based on gender. Instead, these issues are rooted in cultural and personal biases that hinder empowering individuals of all genders.

Sabad Hajare Patisahi 10 - Sabad 10: 1’s Identification | The Sikh Cast | SikhRI
Introducing Sabad Hajare Patshahi 10, new translations and commentaries of Guru Gobind Singh Sahib's composition. Harinder Singh (Innovation Director) and Jasleen Kaur (Research Associate) discuss their learnings and challenges while engaging with the words of this composition. The unique contexts and subversions these compositions reveal are a treat for those who yearn to get to know Guru Gobind Singh Sahib and those who yearn to celebrate Guru Gobind Singh Sahib.
In the tenth composition of the “Sabad Hajare Patisahi 10” (popularly Shabad Hazare Patshahi 10) series, Guru Gobind Singh Sahib declares that identifying with the attributes and existence of the 1 eliminates fear. Guru Sahib disrupts the practice of identifying with deities and celestial bodies, for only the 1 who is beyond the cycle of birth and death eliminates fear.
In this eleventh and final podcast of the series, Harinder Singh and Jasleen Kaur explore Guru Gobind Singh Sahib’s utterances on the 1’s Identification. They discuss the context around the Guru’s references to various Divine names, smaller deities, and sages, as well as various religious texts. They then discuss the Guru’s emphasis on the vastness of IkOankar through his description of the One as infinite, formless, and colorless. Finally, they offer closing personal reflections on the series.

Divine Creator
How do we recognize The One?
Devagandhari Sovereign 10
Do not mark any other except The One.
That Divine is ever capable of destroying and carving, recognize That as the Creator. Pause-reflect.
So what if the stone idols are worshiped in many ways with great love and consciousness?
Hands are tired of touching the stone idols, but there is no power in hands.
Rice, incense, and lamps are offered; the stone idols do not eat anything.
O ignorant! What power does a stone idol have that it can grant you a boon?
Reflect in mind, speech, and action that if a stone idol had any life, it would have given you something.
There is no liberation in other ways except in the refuge of The One Owner.

That One is recognized as the finest among the finest; That One is labeled as the greatest among the greatest.

Only that person is free from the noose of death who takes refuge in Hari-1.

What kind of Yoga?
Ramkali Sovereign 10
O mind! Earn the union by this method:
Consider Truth as a horn, non-deception a necklace, and ascend ash of contemplation. Pause-reflect.
Control inner-self as holding a one-string instrument, and Nam-Identification as a support to receiving alms.
Experience the essence of Hari-1 as the sound of supreme strings; that's where melodious musical modes emerge.
Wave of color-love arises from melodic improvisations and compositions of songs of deep knowledge.
Gods, demons, and sages witness in amazement; those riding skies are in happiness.
Control inner-self as the instruction; practice self-restraint as garb; and unrecitable recitation as the recitation.
That’s how the body always remains golden; the fear of death doesn’t affect it.

Renunciation Redefined
What kind of renunciation?
Ramkali Sovereign 10
O mind, adopt this kind of renunciation:
Consider all houses as the forest; remain non-attached within the mind. Pause-reflect.
Sexual restraint is matted hair, connection with the 1 is pilgrimage bathing; daily commitment is growing nails.
Wisdom is the Guru; let it instruct the inner-self, apply the ash of Nam-Identification.
Consume less, sleep even less; consider compassion and forgiveness as the love for the body.
Always be gentle and content; transcend three prescribed Indic virtues.
Do not bring lust, anger, pride, greed, stubbornness, and attachment into the mind.
Only then can inner-self envision the essence and realize the Supreme Being.

Ep65 - “On the platter are placed three things...” | Sabad of the Week
On the platter are placed three things, reflect on the Truth and the Contentment.
Ruler’s Immortal Nam1 is also placed on it,it is the support of all.
If someone eats it, if someone savors it,that one is emancipated.
This thing cannot be forsaken, daily, daily, keep it in the heart.
Nanak: Cross the dark-ignorant world-ocean in feet-surrender, all is the Supreme Cosmic’s expanse.
Divine Identification
Guru Arjan Sahib Mundavani | Guru Granth Sahib 1429
About the Series
Sabad is Infinite; we are very finite. This is our understanding at the moment, which was different yesterday and may evolve tomorrow, as we deepen our relationship with the Sabad. In this trans-creation, we have chosen to keep the repeating words in the Sabad same. We aspire to learn and retain the Divine attribute as used in the original Sabad and avoid terms like God or Lord.
