April 24: Temple Sustainability Progress

The Office of Sustainability has released its 2022-23 Sustainability Annual Report, which includes the progress made on its goals from the 2019 Climate Action Plan. With 25 of the 44 goals being met 19 of the goals are still in progress most notably in the categories of energy and operations. Managing editors Sarah Frasca and Julia Merola go in depth about what progress has been made and the challenges the university has faced. 


In the past 2 months, there have been 4 incidents of children and teenagers gathering in large numbers on main campus typically around Cecil B. Moore Avenue and Broad Street. At these gatherings, there have been incidents of fights, firing guns, and throwing rocks at police present at the scene. News editor Sidney Rochnik talks about how police respond to these meet-ups and what is planned to do to engage kids in more positive ways.

March 27: The Future of IH

In mid-February IH department director Heath Fogg Davis sent an email informing IH adjunct professors that fewer class sections will be available for adjunct faculty to teach.  Recently another IH administrator wrote that all adjuncts who want to teach are being offered classes in the Fall semester. News Editor Sidney Rochnik talks about the job security of adjunct faculty in Temple’s Intellectual Heritage department and what they have done to advocate for themselves. 


The basketball season has come to an end with historic results from both the men’s and women’s sides. The men’s side defeated UTSA, SMU, Charlotte, and FAU in four days, securing the most wins in a single AAC tournament. The women’s side earned a regular season conference title with the most wins from the Owls since 2017. Sports Editor Declan Landis grades both of the teams seasons and gives insight into what to expect for the future.

March 13: How accessible is the Board of Trustees?

Temple stakeholders believe the university would benefit from the board of trustees being more accessible and transparent. The board acknowledges the need for improvement but questions if the public is actually interested in their operations. Editor-in-chief Fallon Roth talks about what the board does and what they plan to do to be more accessible. 


Two unions at the Fox Chase Cancer Center have reported Temple Health to the National Labor Relations Board for an alleged labor violation. News editor Sidney Rochnik talks about what this means and gives an update on the TAUP negotiations.

Sitting at 17-10 Women’s basketball is first in the American Athletic Conference. While the men’s team is 10-17 and 3-11 in conference play, sitting near the bottom of the AAC. Despite these stark differences in performance promotional events and other activities favor Men’s Basketball in contrast to Women’s Basketball. Editor-in-Chief Fallon Roth and Sports Editor Declan Landis talk about the history of inequality in sports and what can be done. 

 

Temple Libraries surveyed Temple students in the Spring and Fall 2023 semesters in collaboration with Affordable Learning PA on their feelings and experiences with purchasing course materials for classes. Temple students were shown to be more concerned with the extra costs of taking classes than state and nationwide students. News Editor Sidney Rochnik talks about the burden that Temple students have faced.

In August 2023 Morgan Dining Hall was closed down leaving J&H Dining Hall to be the only buffet-style dining hall on campus. During this time the dining hall has faced several challenges and has recently made some changes. News editor Sidney Rochnik talks about the challenges J&H has faced and how they have improved.


On Jan. 24, Temple announced it would discontinue the Diamond Dollars program at the end of the Spring 2024 semester. The program has been a go-to payment method for Temple students since 1999. Features editor Molly Fiske talks about how students, parents, and vendors have reacted to the decision.

In June 2023, the Pennsylvania House passed legislation that would increase the minimum wage to $11 at the start of 2024, $13 in 2025, and $15 in 2026, but the bill was unsuccessful. At Temple, pay for student workers starts at $7.25. News editors Oliver Sabo and Kayla Bryan talk about how student workers feel about the wages they are paid.


As Temple deals with an enrollment decline student leaders have felt the decline as they struggle to recruit new members to join their student organizations. Features editor Molly Fiske talks about why student organizations are seeing decreased participation and how they are dealing with it.

Sen. Bob Casey and Temple University announced a federal grant to provide renovations to Broad Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue. Roughly two weeks ago Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro proposed about a 1.8 percent state increase to Temple for state funding compared to the 5 percent increase that former Gov. Many Temple students struggle to have access to menstrual products and experience period poverty. Moreover, roughly 60 percent of students have struggled or have known someone who has struggled with period poverty.
