The Truth Behind the U.S. Territories

In order to start the exploration of what it means to be part of a U.S. territory in the present, we need to look at the past. In this episode, we dive into how Hawaii became a state and how Saipan, part of the territory of the Northern Mariana Islands, ended up as a commonwealth. With special guest Zane Yamamoto, a Japanese-American whose family has lived in Hawaii for generations, we tackle what cultural assimilation looks like in the 50th state and discuss what it means to be from a place so culturally diverse from mainland U.S. culture.
