Time Management and Juggling Multiple Careers with Cyber Alvarez

Hi everyone! I'm Kwame Violet Taylor, a non-binary, gender-agnostic data scientist new to the field. Today I discuss consistently managing yourself and what you do with my partner and fellow scientist, Cyber Alvarez (he/him).

Corrections: In the episode when I said that I study for 1 hour or less, I meant to say I study 1 hour or 2 hours less a day than I did while I was in school. Lol. I definitely do not only spend 1 hour a day studying, because I'm a huge nerd. 🤓 I'll update the audio to correct that asap.

More detailed show notes to come after I get some sleep. 😴

Transcript: Hi everybody, my name is Kwame Violet Taylor is this is The Violet Method: Black Grrrl Data Science. I’m a data scientist newly entering the field, and I love all things data. On the first episode today, I’ll be introducing the podcast and discussing what you can expect to hear about on here. First up, is the first ever segment of Fast Facts, where I’ll share a tip, quick quip, or interesting information about data science each episode. Did you know that, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of roles for Data Scientists has grown by 650% since 2012? And about 11.5 million jobs will be created by 2026. This is a wild time in the Wild Wild West of data. In a discipline that is younger than the average age of the U.S. workforce, it will be interesting to see how the rise of data science positions will change things. I think we will see the job of “data scientist” potentially start beginning broken down into more specialized roles. Right now, data scientists are responsible for having a wide range of interdisciplinary skills, knowledge of multiple languages, and use of many, many tools. Maybe one day instead of applying for a data scientist position, you might be applying to be a Data Scientist dash Data Preparation or Data Scientist dash EDA. Well, that’s it for fast facts today. Now I’ll talk about the podcast. The Violet Method is podcast for data scientists and the people who love us, or at the very least, put up with us as we talk for hours about data tidying or get excited over the latest news in GANs. I came up with the name, The Violet Method, from one of the many names I go by, Violet. I mostly go by Kwame in the workplace, but my partner and many of my close friends call me Violet. As a non-binary person (I use they/them and she/her pronouns, by the way), having two names is super important to me and I love them both. They both make me, me. I hope to run this podcast for a long time and eventually get a weekly schedule in place for episodes, as well as have interview guests on The Violet Method. As for content, I plan to talk about the field of data science from the perspective of someone who is just starting out as a data scientist. I recently quit my job as a Freelance Graphic Designer to pursue Data Science and am soon to graduate from a 22-week data science bootcamp called Codeup, which is located near my home in San Antonio, TX. Although we are remote right now, haha. I’m very excited to enter the field officially and am so grateful for all the many things I’ve learned in the past 6 months. I’ve been a coder for over 15 years, and a total computer nerd since I was just 1 year old, so I’m definitely more interested in the development side of things. I also have used data for a long time in my personal life, and owe a lot of my success to agile-style project management skills and tools like Kanban, which I’ve been using before I even knew it was something related to software development. I’m really excited to talk about things ranging from anomaly detection and how I’m often tagged as an analogy by technology such as TSA body scans, to what tools I use to maximize productivity, to APIs, to best practices pondering. I hope you all will choose to subscribe and listen along to my data science journey, and thank you for listening to episode 1 of The Violet Method.
