A Satisfying Recovery with Jim Frawley | The Way Out Podcast Episode 383

A Satisfying Recovery with Jim Frawley | The Way Out Podcast Episode 383

In this rendition of The Way Out I’m pleased to bring you my interview with Founder of Bellwhether Executive Development Firm, author, podcaster, and person in long term Recovery Jim Frawley. Jim shares with us his journey to and through recovery to this point and his individual pathway which on the surface may appear to be unconventional in that Jim didn’t follow any particular pathway per se nor does Jim consider himself a member of any recovery organization or group. Despite these surface level differences to those who do follow a defined recovery pathway like the 12-Steps or SMART Recovery, as is so common among us who identify as persons in recovery, there’s far more that unites us in our shared experiences prior to Recovery and in our individual Recovery journeys. One overarching message that comes through Jim’s story is summed up in his favorite quote “It is hard to be satisfied with life, if you’re never satisfied with yourself.”. In other words, the journey starts with us and for Jim it was a process of becoming increasingly satisfied with himself so he could then create and sustain meaning and purpose in all facets of his life and ultimately experience the satisfaction of a sober life well lived so listen up.

First, the only true bottom in addiction is when we stop digging, and we don’t need to hit proverbial rock bottom in order to achieve a meaningful, enduring and rewarding recovery. Second and of equal importance, there are many ways to recover, and they are all worth elevating and celebrating, like the therapeutic pathway of Recovery Jonathan followed so listen up.

How Duncan Bhaskaran Brown Got Over Indulgence | The Way Out Podcast Episode 380

In this edition of The Way Out I’m pleased to bring you my interview with Sober Coach, Podcaster, Researcher, Author, and person in long term sobriety Duncan Bhaskaran Brown. Duncan shares a bit about his journey to and through sobriety with us and a whole lot about how he helps folks reckon with their relationship with alcohol and other substances and behaviors and ultimately move through them to experience all that life can be on the other side of a life that includes problematic substance use and problematic and counterproductive behavior patterns. Duncan does a tremendous job of calling out alcohol specifically for what it is, a known carcinogen, toxin and central nervous depressant. We are not anti-alcohol crusaders here on The Way Out Podcast, rather we aim to illuminate the spectrum that substance use and abuse exists on, and elevate all of the pathways we possibly can to help you Recover and indeed discover the person and life that is waiting for you on the brighter side so listen up.

How Dean Anderson Found Himself Sober | The Way Out Podcast Episode 379

In this edition of The Way Out I’m pleased to bring you my interview with husband, father, person in long term recovery and Author of the book Finding Myself Sober, Dean Anderson. Dean shares his journey to and through Recovery to this point with us with genuine humor, humility and an unmistakable wisdom that can only come from doing the work and practicing certain recovery principles on a daily basis. Dean’s story is proof positive alcoholism and addiction doesn’t discriminate. As we demonstrate often on this podcast, having an idyllic childhood is no guarantee against developing alcohol or substance use disorder despite the high prevalence of trauma and mental health disorders among those of us who identify as persons in Recovery. Dean’s story and his book bring to light key Recovery principles that underlay the 12-Step program of Recovery that are in fact universally applicable to all of us whom are looking for a practical way to implement positive change in our lives as we progress in our individual recovery so listen up.

The Cost of Living High with Greg Greene | The Way Out Podcast Episode 378

In this rendition of The Way out Co-host Jason sits down with person in long term Recovery, Greg Greene. An additional word of caution, this episode contains subject matter that may be disturbing, including graphic discussion of drug use and suicide. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please call or text 988 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Greg shares his story with us from a very open and vulnerable place. A former IV meth user, stints in jails and prisons, and a suicide attempt survivor, he pulls no punches in his sharing, and he even got Jason to share some pretty hard stuff for anyone admit on the air. Indeed, it was a fine opportunity for a couple of men in Recovery to connect and get gut level honest about how some things affected their mental health, as well as how drugs diminished their moral code. As Jason said about this interview and I quote:  “I don't know the last time I said ‘you're telling my story’ to someone so many times!” We hope you come along for the ride as we get to know Greg and see how far he has come on his recovery journey and we’re convinced you'll be glad you did so listen up.

A Highly Sensitive Recovery with Halima Anderson | The Way Out Podcast Episode 375

In this edition of The Way Out I’m pleased to bring you my interview with Sober Living Coach and person in long term recovery, Halima Anderson. Halima shares her journey to and through recovery to this point with us with an infectious humor and frankness that is both relatable and inspiring. A case in point is Halima’s willingness to share that she identifies as a Highly Sensitive Person, which based on my experience on this here podcast is not an uncommon occurrence with those of us who are in Recovery, and understanding this about ourselves can be helpful in understanding why we may feel emotions so intensely, and understand, just like with our addictions, we don’t have to be alone in that experience anymore if we don’t want to and we can in fact turn it into a real asset if we so choose. Halima is proof positive that there’s more than one way to recover and that our collective recoveries have much more common than we may realize so listen up.

A Son's Substance Use Disorder & A Mother's Anguish with Susan Bartz Herrick | The Way Out Podcast Episode 374

A Son's Substance Use Disorder & A Mother's Anguish with Susan Bartz Herrick | The Way Out Podcast Episode 374

In this rendition of The Way Out I’m ecstatic to bring you my interview with Recovery Advocate and Author of the soon to be released book entitled Slow Dancing with the Devil: A Son's Substance Use Disorder, A Mother's Anguish, Susan Bartz Herrick. I’ve learned that often in life less is more, and this is one of those times. Susan’s message that Substance Use Disorder is not a moral failing, it’s a legitimate and diagnosable disease and Recovery is absolutely possible comes through in such powerful and enlightening fashion that anything I could say on the front end would only serve to diminish her quite salient, much needed, and incredibly well articulated message. So without further ado, Susan shares her and her son’s journey with substance use disorder and recovery, including the heartbreaking death of her Son, who was under no uncertain terms, poisoned as you’ll hear firsthand in the compelling and necessary Recovery discussion that is about to unfold before your very ears so do be sure you listen up.

Recovery Brings Love & Light with Muhannah Kakish | Episode 372

Recovery Brings Love & Light with Muhannah Kakish | Episode 372

In this edition of The Way Out I’m honored and humbled to bring you my interview with Certified peer recovery specialist, Certified Peer specialist, forensic peer support specialist, Host of the Rise up Hour at WFNU Frogtown Radio, WRAP One facilitator, person in long term recovery, and my friend and brother in Recovery Muhannah Kakish. Muhannah sincerely, openly, and unflinchingly delivers us his journey to and through Recovery to this point and his accompanying message that Recovery from substance use disorder and compulsive gambling is possible and totally and utterly worth it. An additional word of warning, this episode contains discussions of sexual violence, self-harm and suicide. If you or a loved one are experiencing a mental health crisis, please call or text 988. One of the most instructive elements of Muhannah’s story is his experience with compulsive gambling after being in Recovery from substance use disorder for a considerable length of time. Many of us have or may encounter a problem with another substance or behavior, whether that be a substance use disorder with any variety of substances or a behavior like problem gambling. My own recovery has been a process by which I first eliminated alcohol and other mood-altering substances, then, and not right away, I eliminated nicotine, then, and also not right away, I reckoned with my unhealthy relationship with food and the evolution will surely continue as others surface or resurface. It can be extremely difficult to address these, especially if we are in Recovery already from something else as feelings of shame can arise as we feel like we’re not being honest and authentic in our Recovery. Muhanna’s Recovery journey is proof positive there need be no shame in experiencing secondary, cooccurring, or subsequent dependencies and that when we address them as they present themselves we can experience greater freedom, greater love of ourselves and others and bask in and radiate increasingly brighter light so listen up.

Alex Peacock & Nolan Wright are Purposefully Making Recovery Fun | Episode 371

In this rendition of The Way Out, I’m ecstatic to bring you my interview with two persons in long term recovery and the co-founders of Recess Games, Alex Peacock and Nolan Wright. The mission of Recess Games is to pair those in the community with people in recovery who are seeking healthy avenues to have good clean fun while building a meaningful and purposeful life. The mission of Recess Games is near and dear to our hearts here at The Way Out, as we know how essential connection, community, purpose, and fun are to promoting meaningful and sustainable Recovery. Nolan and Alex each share their respective journeys to and through Recovery to this point with us in the inspirational and candid fashion, which is just the way we like roll here on The Way Out Podcast. Their respective experiences both prior to and in Recovery share much in common and perhaps most instructive is what is unique about their experiences as they entered and traversed their early Recovery. Nolan had a spectacular spiritual experience followed by a profound conviction to do whatever it takes to Recover. Alex experienced a far more gradual awakening, and in the beginning didn’t especially want to even be in Recovery, but the more distance he put between him and his last use the more he found himself changing and truly wanting Recovery. Each no less powerful and each no less meaningful than the other, both just transformational, both just as meaningful, and both proof positive that Recovery is not just possible, but unquestionably worthwhile especially if you’re having a lot of fun along the way which is unquestionably what Nolan, myself, and Alex had in the tremendous recovery discussion that’s about to unfold before your very ears so listen up.

Navigating Family Life in Recovery with Casey Arrillaga | Episode 370

Navigating Family Life in Recovery with Casey Arrillaga | Episode 370

In this edition of The Way Out I’m pleased to bring you my interview with Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor, person in long term recovery and author of several books on addiction and recovery including his newest offering, Mommy's Getting Sober: A children's picture book that also includes a caregiver's guide to talking to kids about addiction Casey Arrillaga. Casey shared his journey to and through recovery in greater depth and about his prior book on an earlier episode of The Way Out, which turned out to be a phenomenal interview so do check the show notes for a handy link to the aforementioned episode. Casey’s newest addition to his recovery literature repertoire fills two important gaps in the quit-lit space. First, it’s a children’s picture book with an accompanying caregiver’s guide that aims, as Casey so eloquently puts it, to aid families in interrupting harmful generational patterns resulting from addiction and alcoholism. Second and as impactful, is that the book aims to create empathy between the caregivers journey in Recovery and Child’s journey so each can have a better understanding of what the other is going through, and lends helpful vocabulary to articulate their respective experiences to each other. It will indeed then be no surprise that this here interview with the one and only Casey Arrillaga is is a particularly articulate discussion on the often thorny and uncharted territory that is family life in Recovery so listen up.

Courtney Andersen Brings Sober Vibes | The Way Out Podcast Episode 369

In this edition of The Way Out I’m pleased to bring you my interview with Podcast Host, Sober Coach and Author of Sober Vibes: A Guide to Thriving in Your First Three Months Without Alcohol, Courtney Andersen. Courtney shares her journey to and through Recovery to this point with us in inspiring fashion, which makes sense for a woman who hosts a recovery podcast, wrote a recovery book and started the national sober day movement. Courtney’s book fills a key gap in the quit-lit space in that it focuses on the first 90 days of sobriety, a critical time for anyone who’s beginning their sobriety journey. Her book is very much a field guide and how to manual for your first 90 days, which is all about action, and action my fellow brothers and sisters is what gets us and keeps us sober and of equal importance, well. Actions saved my life in the beginning and keeps me well today, not my brain which was sabotaging me for far too long. CC Lives a Choice Recovery | The Way Out Podcast Episode 366

In this rendition of The Way Out I’m ecstatic to bring you my interview with person in long term recovery and loyal listener of this podcast, CC. CC shares his journey to and through Recovery to this point with us with an enthusiasm and candor that’s as relatable as it is inspiring. As most of you well know by now, we here at The Way Out Podcast are tireless advocates that all pathways to Recovery are valid and worth elevating. CC recovered through Smart Recovery, which as we learn has many parallels to the 12 Steps and indeed other recovery pathways. One of the biggest recovery truths that came out of CC’s recovery story is that in many ways we have a relationship with our substance of choice, one that in one way or another starts out at least in part beneficially. Maybe we like the way we feel when we use it better than when we don’t. Maybe it numbed emotional or physical pain or both. For some, like yours truly and certainly CC and maybe you too, the relationship turns toxic and the pain and suffering it inflicts upon us becomes increasingly greater than any benefit we are able to derive from using the substance or engaging in the addictive behavior. As instructive is CC’s mantra that we indeed have a choice not to drink today, a choice to live in recovery today, a choice to live happy, joyous and free – just like CC has chosen to do as you’ll hear first hand in the tremendous discussion that’s about to unfold before your very ears so listen up.

These services fill a critical space in the continuum of wellness and recovery services that are not addressed by formal substance use disorder treatment organizations, otherwise known as treatment centers and exists along side mutual aid groups like 12 Step & Smart Recovery meetings. Relationships and Recovery | The Way Out Podcast Episode 362

Relationships and Recovery | The Way Out Podcast Episode 362

In this rendition of The Way Out co-host Jason and I, along with person in long term recovery and past guest of The Way Out Nick Warnke tackle a whopper of a Recovery Power Topic, Relationships and Recovery. As we mention in the discussion to follow, we did an episode on relationships in recovery, episode 114, back in December of 2018. Now five years later we’re taking a fresh look at this subject in a very different light from three people in long term recovery in unique current situations regarding our relationship statuses. Jason is in a romantic relationship and has been for more than three years. As he says it’s not perfect, but it’s a good relationship, so good in fact he’s engaged to be married. Jason, bless his heart, was the perfect person to balance out the yin and yang of where Nick and I are at with our relationships. I just got out of a serious, long term 5-year relationship, my first relationship in Recovery and in many ways it felt like a first for many reasons. What was also a first for me, is that this time I knew I didn’t have to revert to counterproductive thought and behavior patterns like self-sabotage, isolating, retaliation, and controlling behavior – and I didn’t – and as a result, I didn’t harm myself or her or my son and I was able to walk away from the relationship hurting but without causing additional and unnecessary harm, and that my friends is growth. Nick, is in the uncertain and ambiguous middle where he is very unsure of the status of his current relationship, and as many of us can relate, uncertainty strikes at the very core of our desire to control people, places and things and can be most difficult to endure for any length of time. Nick even shares with us his ayahuasca experience, which was amazing indeed. We all get real about where we’re at with our romantic relationships and we also broaden out the discussion and discuss the importance of our relationships with our respective Higher Powers, the ever-important relationship with ourselves, and our important relationships with other people both romantic and otherwise and how important these relationships are in our individual Recovery journeys so listen up.

How Ben Tuff Swam Himself Out of a Bottle | The Way Out Podcast Episode 360

In this rendition of The Way Out I’m pleased to bring you my interview with Person in Long Term Recovery and Ultra Marathon Swimmer Ben Tuff. Ben shares his journey to and through recovery to this point with and about his new documentary, Swim Tuff: How I Swam My Way Out of a Bottle and about his work with Clean Ocean Access as well. The epic swim the documentary centers around is also a perfect metaphor for his Recovery and I dare say recovery at large for a variety of reasons, perhaps most strikingly is the fact that Ben literally didn’t even know how to swim upon entering Recovery and now he’s swimming ultra marathons. Just like in Recovery, where we have no idea how to live a meaningful life without addictive substances and/or behaviors, but if we put in the work and are willing to learn, make mistakes, persevere through adversity, connect to ourselves, our spirituality and others we can achieve meaningful and enduring recovery and have opportunities to help others by Recovering Out Loud like Ben does on this here episode so listen up.

Deryl Glaze is Speaking Life into You | The Way Out Podcast Episode 359

In this edition of The Way Out cohost extraordinaire Jason had the pleasure of interviewing person in long term recovery, Deryl Glaze. Deryl is an Inspirational Addiction and Recovery Expert and Speaker, Motivational Coach, and Ordained Minister. Over the last twenty years interacting with recovering addicts and substance abusers in a variety of capacities, Deryl observed that the ones who didn't have any dreams, any "Big Whys" beyond abstinence, were far more likely to relapse or have a recurrence of their substance use disorder, than those who did. As a result Deryl developed a workshop to help those who are in Recovery find purpose or their “Big Why’s”. Now Deryl speaks, runs workshops, and is the Head Certified Recovery Coach at Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge. No matter what hat he's wearing, his message is that many folks find they need a goal bigger than merely abstinence to motivate themselves achieve meaningful and enduring recovery. You don't want to miss the tremendous message Deryl has for you, so listen up.

A Dominating Recovery with Alex "King Roach" Montanez | The Way Out Podcast Episode 358

A Dominating Recovery with Alex "King Roach" Montanez | The Way Out Podcast Episode 358

In this rendition of the Way Out I’m extremely excited to bring you my interview with person in long term Recovery and Producer and founder of Global Domination Productions Alex “King Roach” Montanez. Alex has been Recovering Out Loud with his Blog, Dominate the Glob since his Recovery began over a year ago and now he’s Recovering Out Loud with us by sharing his journey to and through recovery to this point with us in a distinctly frank and compelling manner, and in a way that brings in stark relief hallmarks of addiction and alcoholism that are worth highlighting. Of particular import, is the common feature of active addiction that can be described as bargaining with ourselves, which we’ve discussed more than a time or two on this podcast. This is the act of restricting or changing the amount, frequency, type, environment, or manner of the problematic substance or behavior, which and this is key, invariably fails. As important to understand, is that we don’t have to do this with other things we like, but don’t have a problem with. It’s the difference between liking strawberries, and being addicted to alcohol. As instructive in Alex’s story is the manifestation of his Ego and how inextricably linked it was to his alcoholism. As he describes it, and so many of us can relate, alcohol was the key ingredient in perpetuating the persona he felt he needed to maintain, and without it, he was not able to be the person he wanted to be, and alcohol at the same time was destroying Alex and everything he held dear, which led to a crisis that ultimately produced perhaps an unlikely and most definitely an inspiring Recovery. An imperfect recovery that’s a work in progress, but one that is proof positive that Recovery is worth every bit of effort we put in, and this phenomenal interview is worth every minute of your time so do be sure you listen up.

How to Begin Again with Gary Menkes | The Way Out Podcast Episode 357

In this edition of The Way Out I’m absolutely delighted to bring you my interview with fellow Recovery Podcaster and person in long term Recovery, Gary Menkes. Gary Recovers Out Loud with us and shares his journey to and through recovery with the remarkable insight and candor that only comes from a person that has experienced the depths of despair that alcoholism and addiction can bring, followed by an enlightening and inspiring recovery. A recovery that was not linear, and indeed imperfect, which makes it all the more inspirational. Equally as inspiring, is Gary’s decision to help others Recover Out Loud with The Begin Again Podcast, of which our amazing cohost Jason and I were able to be on recently, and the episode featuring Jason and I is now available for your listening pleasure, a handy link to that episode is in the show notes for your convenience so give it a listen, won’t you? Ashlee Herget Shares How South Metro Community Services Empowers the Recovery Community | The Way Out Podcast Episode 355

In this edition of The Way Out I’m beyond honored to bring you my interview with President of Operations of South Metro Community Services and person in long-term recovery, Ashlee Herget. South Metro Community Services, is a 501 (C3) Nonprofit Recovery Community Organization. They strive to connect individuals with substance use disorder to vital resources tailored to each persons unique needs, and they fight to empower autonomy and decrease stigma. Ashlee shares a bit about her journey to and through recovery this point, and if you you’d like to hear her entire story, I highly encourage you to check out episode 184 for Co-host Jason’s outstanding interview with Ashlee, both of whom I am a complete and unabashed fan. What makes up the lion’s share of what turned out to be a truly stellar discussion is illuminating what a Recovery Community Organization or RCO is, how they fit into the Recovery services landscape, what specific services South Metro Community Services provides the Recovery community, and perhaps most importantly why it all matters. At their core, RCO’s fill a crucial gap in the recovery services landscape, specifically addressing the needs of individuals with substance use disorder that are not addressed by the treatment industry. Often this happens before treatment, such as to help get folks into treatment or after folks leave treatment but RCO’s provide services at any point in a persons recovery journey. To invoke Ashlee’s analogy that she uses to explain what an RCO is, South Metro Community Services serves as a vital bridge for those with substance use disorder with services like Peer Recovery Coaching, Tattoo Removal, and a clothing boutique, all at no cost along with community services like Naloxone training. Whether you find yourself in place where you could benefit from services like these or you in a position where you can support the tremendous work South Metro Community Services, you won’t want to miss a minute of the phenomenal Recovery rap session with the one and only Ashlee Herget that’s about to unfold before your very ears so listen up.

Bamboozled: An Interview wtih Ken Middleton | The Way Out Podcast Episode 352

Bamboozled: An Interview wtih Ken Middleton | The Way Out Podcast Episode 352

In this edition of The Way Out I’m delighted to bring you my interview with person in long term recovery, wellness advocate and author of the book Bamboozled: The Guide to Getting EVERYTHING You Want in Life by Giving Up Alcohol, Ken Middleton. Ken shares his journey to and through sobriety to this point with us in an exceptionally enlightening and inspiring fashion. For Ken, getting sober wasn’t born out of debilitating alcoholism leading to an ultra-low bottom of despair and hopelessness. No, Ken reckoned with his relationship with alcohol, despite not having severe internal or external consequences and essentially asked himself one big question. What would life look like if he didn’t drink? Out of that question an experiment was born, and Ken realized that though Alcohol wasn’t destroying his life in the classic crash and burn style, what ken discovered was all the things alcohol was preventing him from being and doing. Said in another way, Ken had a remarkable realization: Alcohol was limiting him and was nothing short blocking him from being the best version of himself. Ken’s story is proof positive we don’t have to be in the depths of addiction in order to benefit from abstinence, sobriety, and recovery. We can ask ourselves questions similar to what Ken asked himself, such as what could life be like if like if I didn’t drink or use for a period of time? Ken suggests 90 days, but you choose the amount of time and then do something we talk often about on this show, run the experiment, and see what happens. You may find you were more dependent on it than you thought and your drinking or use was no mere habit, or you may find that though perhaps you weren’t dependent on it, alcohol or substances were acting like a governor on an old school muscle car and keeping your potential pent up, or you may find out something all together different. The only way you’ll find out is by running that experiment yourself, and might I suggest you take it in 24-hour segments at a time saying “Self, I’m not going to drink and/or use today”. Then start engaging in a recovery and/or wellness program and begin building a meaningful life filled with purpose as you become increasingly closer to the person you feel called to be. To that end, you’ll find plenty of practical tools, insight, and inspiration in Ken’s story, which about to unfold before your very ears so listen up.

Diary of a Fat Girl with Lisa Sargese | The Way Out Podcast Episode 351

In this rendition of The Way Out I’m pleased to bring you my interview with Professor, author, and person in long term recovery Lisa Sargese. Lisa shares her journey to and through Recovery from compulsive overeating as well as physical and emotional trauma in a way that cuts to the case and gets down to the heart of the matter, which for her was that her compulsive overeating was inextricably linked to an unwillingness to tolerate very specific dark emotions, which is what Lisa refers to them as and is rather apropos to what negative emotions feel like. This revelation for Lisa didn’t come easy, in fact it came at quite the high cost, an experience many of us can relate to. Understanding her triggers was just the beginning for Lisa, as she then leaned into 12-Step Recovery, Qi Gong, mindfulness, and a daily spiritual practice to build a happier, healthier life. As Lisa so profoundly states and I paraphrase, if you earnestly connect to your spirituality in a way that is meaningful to you every day, you will change which indeed has been my experience and the experience of many that have shared their recovery journeys on this here podcast just like the one from none other than Lisa Sargese that’s about to unfold before your very ears so listen up.

Recovering from the Co-Crazy of codependency & addiction with Dr. Sarah Michaud | The Way Out Podcast Episode 347

Recovering from the Co-Crazy of codependency & addiction with Dr. Sarah Michaud | The Way Out Podcast Episode 347

In this rendition of The Way Out I’m ecstatic to bring you my interview with psychologist, author of the new book Co-Crazy One Psychologist’s Recovery from Codependency and Addiction: A Memoir and Roadmap to Freedom, and person in long term recovery Dr. Sarah Michaud. Dr Sarah shares her journey to and through recovery from addiction and codependency to this point with us in a way that really helps us understand both in an extremely beneficial way. On its face, addiction and codependence appear to be polar opposites of one another. Addiction involves the compulsive use of a substance or behavior to change one’s feelings, or default state of mind and body. Codependency on the other hand, is on its surface, about trying to change the addict or alcoholic. Underneath this behavior, however is a compulsion that is precisely the same but looks very different on the surface. Co-dependent behavior ultimately is about trying to change others in order to change one’s own feelings. It often manifests like this: I feel a compulsion to fix or save a loved one from pain or discomfort. This seems like a straightforward act of love and helpfulness, however the driving force behind this act is not about them. In reality, it’s about me. My inability to sit with the discomfort and dis-ease of watching a loved one experience pain or adversity. Ultimately, the desire to control people, places and things is about trying to change others so I can change my feelings. The good news is, just as the root of codependency and addiction are strikingly similar, so are the principles and practices we adopt to recover from each affliction Dr. Sarah’s message about the truth of addiction and codependency, how she found The Way Out, and how you can too is instructive, enlightening and downright inspirational so listen up.

George Gatski Gives Back to Stay Well | The Way Out Podcast Episode 346

In this edition of The Way Out I’m pleased to bring you my interview with person in long term recovery and CEO of Desert Hope Treatment Center, George Gatski. George shares his journey to and through recovery this point with us with the refreshing candor and insight we’ve come to know quite well here at The Way Out Podcast and the fashion in which Greg shares his Recovery journey is a shining example of a Powerful Recovery story that is ultra relatable and extremely illuminating. Especially enlightening and instructive in George’s story are the following messages: first is the exceptionally common experience of our drug of choice being an instant answer to our problems - as George phrases it, like a key in a lock and equally important to understand is most folks don’t feel that way when the drink or use substances. Second, and we’re fierce advocates of this message, there are no rock bottoms in addiction. The only true rock bottom is when we’re dead. Anything short of that is when we stop digging. Instead, there are very often windows of opportunities or bottoms if you will which afford us a chance to enter into Recovery and to make a decision to begin to make the changes we need to make in order to launch our Recovery in earnest. Last but certainly not least, George’s message that we’re not bad people getting good, instead we’re sick people getting well helps us understand that we can shed the shame and guilt wrapped up in our past which is consistent with much of the work that is embodied in the 12 Steps and many other pathways of Recovery. All of this is to say that George’s story is a tremendous listen and is jam packed with spiritual and recovery truth so do make sure you listen up.

The Fruits of Recovery with Tim Moon | The Way Out Podcast Episode 344

The Fruits of Recovery with Tim Moon | The Way Out Podcast Episode 344

In this rendition of The Way Out, I’m over the moon about having Teacher, Author and person in long term recovery Tim Moon – see what I did there – back on the show to share about his newest book, Tomato Fields which at once has nothing to do with Recovery while at the same time has everything to do with Recovery. Tomato Fields is on it’s face an action/mystery/horror/adventure work of fiction that isn’t about recovery at all, and a very good one at that, yet the only reason this book exists is because of Recovery, specifically Tim’s recovery. It is in fact, a fruit of Tim’s Recovery and a phenomenal example of what Recovery and spirituality can enable us to do when we lean in and do the inside-out work we need to do to Recover and get out of our own way in an increasingly meaningful way which allows the opportunity to become ever closer to the people we feel called to be. Because I stopped believing in coincidences rather early in my own Recovery as one of the fruits of my spiritual experience it’s no coincidence that our conversation had little yet everything to do with his new book. Our spiritually charged exchange largely centered on Recovery and God, and a bit less on the book itself, yet I go back to the reason that Tomato Fields even exists is as a result of Tim’s spirituality and recovery. Similarly, the only reason this podcast and indeed this here episode that’s chalked full of spiritual and recovery truth exists is because of the totality Tim and I’s collective spirituality and recovery so listen up.

The Power of Recovery Theater with Bob Lo Bue | The Way Out Podcast Episode 341

The Power of Recovery Theater with Bob Lo Bue | The Way Out Podcast Episode 341

In this edition of The Way Out, I’m absolutely honored to bring you my interview with President of Visions of Recovery Inc, Director and Author of Visions Theater, and Person in long term recovery Bob Lo Bue. Bob shares his journey to and through recovery to this point with us with unbridled honesty and a refreshing humor that makes it all the more enjoyable when we are taking in the rather poignant spiritual and recovery wisdom that is embedded within it and all the more inspirational when we learn what Recovery has enabled Bob to do as a result. Namely the divinely inspired Visions Theater which is a play by and for people in Recovery that depicts various iterations of two of our most defining shared experiences as people in Recovery – our moment of reckoning, followed by our entry into Recovery. This powerful performance has the power to do what all good recovery stories have the power to do, and that is to break through our denial and terminal uniqueness and inspire within us the idea that Recovery may in fact be possible and worthwhile for us. Stories afford us an opportunity to see ourselves in others that have felt like we felt, did what we did, thought like we thought and have gotten better, and these stories contain a road map and medicine to help us find our own Way Out. Bob truly believes we who experience addiction are but lost souls who are desperately seeking our way home, and once we do find our way often we embrace life with an uncommon vigor that enables us to reclaim and discover our gifts, talents, skills and abilities and use them for the greater good of humanity, and in the process we become increasingly closer to the people we feel called to be, and this here episode is proof positive so listen up.
