Episode 14 - Twisted

Twisted: The Untold Story of a Royal Vizier is a musical with music by A. J. Holmes, lyrics by Kaley McMahon, and book by Matt Lang, Nick Lang, and Eric Kahn Gale. The musical parodies the 1992 Walt Disney Animation Studios' film Aladdin, and The Walt Disney Company in general, telling the story from the point of view of Ja'far, the Royal Vizier. It has several nods and homages to the musical Wicked, which similarly retells a popular story from the villain's point of view.

Whether you have ADHD or not, we're gonna be here chatting and laughing for a while, riding the waves of random topics as they float in. You can always listen intently to our rants on which ramen flavor is truly the best, or you can just play our strong opinions on what time signature Memories from CATS is actually in in the background while you clean your kitchen. Episode 13 - Wicked

“No One Mourns The Wicked”

Wicked is a Broadway musical, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Winnie Holzman. It is based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, itself a retelling of the classic 1900 novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum and the 1939 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film The Wizard of Oz. The musical is told from the perspective of the witches of the Land of Oz; its plot begins before and continues after Dorothy Gale arrives in Oz from Kansas, and includes several references to the 1939 film and Baum's novel. Wicked tells the story of two unlikely friends, Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Galinda (whose name later changes to Glinda the Good Witch), who struggle through opposing personalities and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love-interest, reactions to the Wizard's corrupt government, and, ultimately, Elphaba's private fall from grace.

Episode 12 - Little Shop of Horrors

“On The 21st Day in the month of September…..”

Little Shop of Horrors is a horror comedy rock musical with music by Alan Menken and lyrics and a book by Howard Ashman. The story follows a hapless florist shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on human blood and flesh. The musical is loosely based on the low-budget 1960 black comedy film The Little Shop of Horrors. The music, composed by Menken in the style of early 1960s rock and roll, doo-wop and early Motown, includes several well-known tunes, including the title song, "Skid Row (Downtown)", "Somewhere That's Green", and "Suddenly, Seymour". The musical premiered Off-Off-Broadway in 1982 before moving to the Orpheum Theatre Off-Broadway, where it had a five-year run. It later received numerous productions in the U.S. and abroad, and a subsequent Broadway production. The musical was also made into a 1986 film of the same name, directed by Frank Oz, starring Rick Moranis and Ellen Greene as Seymour and Audrey.

She currently serves on various committees at The Newtowne Players, and is the host for their bi-weekly podcast called “The Green Room.” A “jack of all trades,” she is excited and grateful for the return of live theater after such a long hiatus. Stacy lives on the shore of the Chesapeake Bay in an empty nest with her husband Bill and their furry menagerie. She is grateful for her talented children Ashley, Kylie, Madelyn, and Bradley who have helped fill her life with music and excitement. She is also VERY grateful to Kenny for the opportunity to guest on his fabulous show, and encourages everyone listening to support the arts however possible. Become a member, an audience member or a sponsor, because Community Theater doesn’t exist without the COMMUNITY, and without the arts, the world is a MUCH less beautiful place to be.

Episode 11 - Green Day’s American Idiot

Green Day’s American Idiot is a sung-through rock musical based on the 2004 concept album of the same name by punk rock band Green Day. After a run at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in 2009, the show moved to the St. James Theatre on Broadway. Previews began on March 24, 2010, and the musical officially opened on April 20, 2010. The show closed on April 24, 2011, after 422 performances. While Green Day did not appear in the production, vocalist/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong performed the role of "St. Jimmy" occasionally throughout the run. The story, expanded from that of the album, centers on three disaffected young men, Johnny, Will and Tunny. Johnny and Tunny flee a stifling suburban lifestyle and parental restrictions, while Will stays at home to work out his relationship with his pregnant girlfriend, Heather. The former pair look for meaning in life and try out the freedom and excitement of the city. Tunny quickly gives up on life in the city, joins the military and is shipped off to war. Johnny turns to drugs and finds a part of himself that he grows to dislike, has a relationship and experiences lost love.

Episode 9 - Cabaret

Cabaret is a 1966 musical with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and book by Joe Masteroff. The musical was based on John Van Druten's 1951 play I Am a Camera which was adapted from the semi-autobiographical novel Goodbye to Berlin (1939) by Anglo-American writer Christopher Isherwood. Set in 1929–1930 Berlin during the waning days of the Weimar Republic as the Nazis are ascending to power, the musical focuses on the hedonistic nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub, and revolves around American writer Clifford Bradshaw's relations with English cabaret performer Sally Bowles. A sub-plot involves the doomed romance between German boarding house owner Fräulein Schneider and her elderly suitor Herr Schultz, a Jewish fruit vendor. Overseeing the action is the Master of Ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub, and the club itself serves as a metaphor for ominous political developments in late Weimar Germany.

Episode 2 - The Last Five Years

Episode 2 - The Last Five Years

The Last Five Years is a musical written by Jason Robert Brown. It premiered at Chicago's Northlight Theatre in 2001 and was then produced Off-Broadway in March 2002. The story explores a five-year relationship between Jamie Wellerstein, a rising novelist, and Cathy Hiatt,

a struggling actress. The show uses a form of storytelling in which Jamie's story is told in chronological order (starting just after the couple have first met) and Cathy's story is told in reverse chronological order (beginning the show at the end of the marriage). The characters do not directly interact except for a wedding song in the middle as their timelines intersect.

Welcome To “The Whole Note”

Welcome To “The Whole Note”

Welcome to The Whole Note. A Weekly Podcast to discuss the thing I love most, Musical Theatre! Every week I will have a special guest and we will talk about a musical of their choosing, give a synopsis of the show by going through the music track by track to tell the story, and then talk about its origins, the actors, the songs, and the revivals if it had any. Finally, we will then give it a Whole Note Grade from A+ to F. Every episode will end with where you can purchase the musical's cast recording and who owns the rights to the musical for professional and amateur productions.
