La Prensa San Diego recently released an article detailing how San Diego County law enforcement and fire agencies have secretly run a local committee without public knowledge that has spent at least $100 million on armored vehicles, facial recognition technology, license plate readers, drones, riot gear, and other security equipment. 

Art Castañares (publisher/editor-at-large of La Prensa) joined us to discuss how the San Diego Urban Area Working Group (comprised of a police or fire department representative from each of the 18 cities in the county) has received and disbursed funds from federal grants given by DHS since around 2008, all without public knowledge and odd city council votes.

 According to La Prensa, "When the UAWG was created in 2008, the group deemed itself exempt from the California Public Records Act (CPRA), the state law which declares that “access to information concerning the conduct of the people’s business is a fundamental and necessary right of every person in this state.”.  This is an episode you don't want to miss out on hearing!
