Episode 17 The Hardest Part
Possibly the hardest part of pet ownership is when it comes to an end, when we have to say goodbye to the friend and companion who has become such an integral part of our life.
No matter how long we have with them, goodbye always comes too soon. That loss can weigh heavy on us, but there is support for those who need it.

In the United States Army, soldiers are assigned a partner – or “battle buddy” – as a friend and ally to assist one another in and out of combat. One woman took that idea as an inspiration to make sure soldiers coming home had someone they could count on and launched Northwest Battle Buddies, an organization training service dogs for veterans.

Episode 15 Diamond in The "Ruff"
It is a very special dog that can handle this high stress work and most of the time the ones that succeed have been purposefully bred to become the best dogs they can be, but sometimes out of shelters or rescues, comes a diamond in the "ruff."
In this episode, I have a conversation with Sergeant Clay Core of the Oregon State Patrol K9 unit about a couple recruits that fit that description.
We also talk about the responsibilities if a K9 handler, the selection process for choosing the right dogs, and the rescue that helped bring a couple standouts into the law enforcement fold.

Episode 14 Iditarod Champion, Dallas Seavey
The Iditarod is a test of courage, strength, and stamina for man and dog alike. Few can succeed in this grueling race, fewer still can repeat their championship performance. And so far, only two have ever repeated that feat five times,. One of those is Dallas Seavey.
Following his record-tying fifth win in what is called The Last Great Race, Dallas spoke with us for The American Canine Podcast to talk about how he got started on this trail, what drives him to keep at it, and how being an Iditarod Champion may just be in his blood.

Episode 13 Matt Haverkamp Foundation
A K9 can be a force multiplier for a police department, adding numerous facets to law enforcement options when they’re patrolling the streets.
But a big problem is the cost associated with a k9 program, not just the cost of the dog, which is substantial, but the ongoing training and veterinary costs.
In this episode, I speak with Nancy Haverkamp and Heather Lane from the Matt Haverkamp Foundation.
Matt was a K9 officer in a small community outside Cincinnati. He was killed in an off-duty car accident in 2005 and to keep his memory alive, his family and friends started the Foundation which provides dogs, gear, and training for K9 units.
