With a sharp sense of humor that has kept him schuckling back and forth at countless synagogues, he’s also spent many years sitting in stillness on a cushion, trying desperately to empty his mind while staring at a blank white wall at the Village Zendo. Despite his extensive life experience, he remains wise enough to acknowledge that he hasn't figured everything out — except, perhaps, for the art of effective crankiness.
Steven’s books include The Last Surviving Dinosaur: The TyrantoCrankaTsuris, The Crankatsuris Method: A Grownup Guide to Effective Crankiness, and the "Snoodles" series, which includes Snoodles, Kidoodles, Poodles, and Lots and Lots of Noodles and Snoodles in Space: A Snoodle, The Zoodle Kidoodles, and One Happy Schmoodle. His latest book, Cranky Superpowers: Life Lessons Learned from the Common CrankaTsuris Chronicles, delivers more of his signature wisdom as he continues to explore and celebrate the cranky corners of life.

At age 17, Walter was a hippie who traveled all over the nation and Canada in an old convertible. He did odd jobs – YMCA instructor, painted water towers, built homes, photo lab technician – and got himself into all kinds of brushes with the law. He even shot himself – twice – accidentally.

His novella, Dewdrops, was originally written for the stage and enjoyed a full-cast staged reading at the Theatre of the Open Eye in New York. He serves on the Board of Directors of Childhood USA, the U.S. arm of the World Childhood Foundation, established by Queen Silvia of Sweden, working to end child sexual abuse and exploitation everywhere.

The scandals, schemes, and scams of American life, from Wall Street shenanigans to the Mafia, from the 1980s to the present day, provide a rich setting for an exciting new kind of detective novel, The Peter O'Keefe series, that is a blend of literary fiction and crime thriller, written by finance, bankruptcy, and banking lawyer Dan Flanigan.
He has had a front-row seat for the past four decades to the mind of the corrupt, the criminal, and the con – and employs his experience and expertise to give his action-packed books a feeling of gritty authenticity. His newest book, On Lonesome Roads, the third installment in the series, is a gripping tale with well-drawn characters, especially when it comes to Detective Peter O'Keefe, a physically scarred and emotionally battered Vietnam vet. This is serious fiction wrapped in the cloak of a hard hitting, exciting detective novel – a story that has it all – terror, murder, addiction, sex, obsession, crime, and doom, yes – but also friendship, fatherhood, integrity, duty, and sacrifice, and love.
Flanigan is a veteran practicing lawyer who gives us an insider's real-world view of the formal and informal workings of our legal system and the schemes and scams germinating in the seamy underbelly of our business world.

S2 Episode 33 The Last Roman - BK Greenwood
This episode brought to you by www.theauthorsporch.com
I moved a lot as a kid. As a result, I attended seven different elementary schools. Books became my coping mechanism. They replaced the awkwardness associated with starting a new school, walking into a new classroom, and making new friends. Books didn’t judge, they didn’t bully, and they didn’t exclude me from whatever activities were going on. Not once did I ever pick up a book and feel rejected.
I was methodical in my reading habits. Before middle school, I stuck to nonfiction. History, geography, and zoology. I would pick a section of the library and check out all the books on a given subject. I covered a multitude of topics; the Revolutionary war, the Serengeti, the Great Depression, Manifest Destiny, pirates, you get the picture. I distinctly remember one weekend checking out three separate books on World War II fighter pilots. Needless to say, the librarians knew me by name. I was voracious and would finish a dozen books a week. I rushed through in-class work so I could read and escape from the world.
When I reached middle school, I discovered fiction. It started with the first book I ever bought, Tarzan of the Apes. I was enthralled. So much so that I rode my bike to different malls, collecting the entire series in paperback (24 books in all). I read each one twice and several three times or more. I branched off into their works by Edgar Rice Burroughs, specifically the Barsoom series (otherwise known as John Carter of Mars). Finding more books to read was like pulling the thread on the tapestry. Jules Verne, Tolkien, Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Larry Niven, Terry Brooks, Harry Turtledove, Clive Cussler, and the list goes on. And of course, who can forget the time someone challenged me to read Dhalgren (at a tender 14 years old). Thanks, Ken.
Finally, my attention turned to more sophisticated fiction and non-fiction. My good friend Matt introduced me to Barbara Tuchman, an excellent historian, and several Russian classics by Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoevsky. English and American classics also found their place.
Somewhere along the line, my thoughts shifted from reading to writing. A long conversation with my high school friend Dustan probably inspired me. In my late twenties, a story began to form that would take 20+ years to complete, a story I am ready to share with the world.
I’ve had incredible support, from my beautiful wife Sonya to my amazing kids, Chris and McKenna. All my friends and family (you all know who you are, but if you need to be called out, let me know). I am forever grateful for their steady praise, honest feedback, harsh criticism, and above all, endless encouragement. Any success I have as a writer will always be erected upon the foundation of their enthusiasm.
