INEC delists over 1.1 million new voter registrations but it’s not a conspiracy
Two weeks ago, INEC tweeted that 45% of voter registrations, that’s over 1.1 million, which happened within a 6 month period were invalid and would not be included in the voter register for the upcoming general election. Twitter went crazy, everyone’s conspiracy theory antennae went up, and INEC has been on the defensive ever since.
In this episode, we will try to break down for you how it’s possible to have invalid registrations and why the 45% number is actually consistent with what INEC has reported in the past.

INEC wants an Electoral Offences Commission but there are issues with the proposed bill
It’s no secret that in Nigeria, electoral offences happen. There’s vote buying, ballot box snatching, bribing of INEC officials, disorderly behavior at a political meeting, illegal voting, threatening a person with violence…these and so much more have been defined as election offenses in our laws and they come with penalties.
Last month, as part of a public hearing on the Bill for an Act to Establish the Electoral Offences Commission 2022 and other related matters, INEC made their case for why we need a separate commission to investigate, arrest, and prosecute election offenders.
We analyze the bill and identify significant gaps that may make the bill ineffective at best, or at worst, a political tool.

How three candidates plan to handle insecurity
Ochanya Told Her Story (but it wasn’t enough for a conviction on rape)
Ochanya was diagnosed with Vesico-Vaginal Fistula (VVF) and on Wednesday, the 17th of October 2018, she died. Before she died, Ochanya was leaking urine and feces as a result of damage she suffered to her vagina and rectum allegedly at the hands of her cousin Victor Ogbuja and his father, Andrew Ogbuja.
Fast forward to April, 2022 and Ochanya’s uncle, Andrew Ogbuja, was acquitted by the State High Court in Makurdi. The court ruled that there was no sufficient corroborating evidence to convict him and that Ochanya was not present to tell her story.
Why didn’t Ochanya’s videotaped interview with the journalists count? What kind of corroborating evidence does the court need for a rape allegation? Does the accused person have to be caught in the act? Do they have to be subjected to a medical examination? What if they confess - does that count as corroborating evidence?
In this episode, we try to find out.

Breaking the cycle of abuse starts with how we discipline children
It’s okay to discipline children but maybe it’s time to rethink how we do it in Nigeria and across Africa. In this episode we talk about how our tolerance for domestic abuse later as adults can actually be set by how we are disciplined in our childhood.
Imagine this.
Your child does something wrong. So you beat her because you’ve decided this is the only way she will learn. Then after all the tears are shed, you tell her that you did it because you love her. And maybe you even feel a little bad about the beating and you’re extra nice to her afterwards and she’s extra obedient afterwards.
Fastfoward to your child as an adult. She’s in a relationship and one day the man gets angry and beats her. Then after all the tears are shed, he tells her that he did it because she did something wrong but that he loves her and he’s sorry. Then he’s extra nice to her afterwards and she loves him even more. And she stays. Until one day she has had enough and she leaves or he kills her.

Our campaign financing laws have been watered down - here’s how
Politicians and political parties need money to fund campaigns. Regulating how politicians and political parties raise funds and how they spend those funds is important because If you leave it up to the politician and political parties, anything goes. In this episode, we take a closer look at our Electoral Act and we noticed that it has been diluted, watered down over the years. Our legislators appear to be introducing more grey areas into every new version of the act and these grey areas seem to help cover up information about source of funds, recipients of funds, amounts contributed, frequency of contributions and requirements to disclose information.

The strange behaviors of Nigerians and Japanese after a football match, explained
Last month, in March, Nigeria’s Super Eagles hosted Ghana’s Black Stars at the MKO Abiola stadium in Abuja. It was the qualifying round for the World Cup and Nigeria lost. The expected behavior after a football match ends is for everyone to simply leave the stadium. But after last month’s match ended, something strange happened: a crowd of spectators began to trash and vandalize the stadium. A complete opposite but equally strange behavior happened at the 2018 World Cup: Japanese spectators, en masses, cleaned up their trash from the stadium after they lost a match.
One word may explain the strange behaviors of the Japanese and our own: conformity.

To solve Northern Nigeria's problems - look to the elephant?
In 1996, staff at Pilanesberg National park, a game reserve in South Africa, had a problem: young bull male elephants were on a rampage. They were going after visitors and attacking and killing the rhinos. This was definitely not normal behavior for elephants. The ecologists at Pilanesberg diagnosed the situation and came up with a plan that restored the natural balance in the park. No rhino has been killed by an elephant at Pilanesberg ever since.
Northern Nigeria has a problem: young men in their 20s and 30s are on a rampage. Can we look to the elephant for a possible solution?

From confraternities to cults and now gangs?
In 1950s Nigeria there was so much excitement in the air as the country was getting ready for Independence from British colonial rule. Political participation and activism had been ramping up for some time and even students were getting into the anti-colonial and pro-nationalist spirit.
As part of their civic duty to help forge a better society, one young man, 18-year old Wole Soyinka, and his friends formed a confraternity, the first of its kind in Nigeria. Their creed: to be anti-colonial, anti-convention, anti-socio-economic class, de-tribalized, non-religious, non-political, and non-violent.
By the 1980s, their “noble” idea had devolved into university cults some of whose members were out to rob, rape, and murder.
Fastforward to today and Nigeria is still dealing with cult related violence but the violence has now spread beyond university walls and is terrorizing local communities.

Last month, on the 17th of January, President Muhammadu Buhari unveiled over 10 pyramids of rice at the Abuja International Trade Fair Complex. One million rice paddies were used to construct the pyramids as part of a media parade to showcase the results from the Anchor Borrower’s Programme (ABP). According to the President, with the ABP, Nigeria’s rice production has increased to over 7.5 million metric tons annually. With so much rice production, why is the average price of a 50kg bag of rice N20,000?

Deal or no deal? 5,000 Naira in exchange for your fuel subsidy.
In November 2021, Zainab Ahmed, Minister of Finance announced the government plans to finally and completely remove fuel subsidy and implement a 5,000 Naira cash transfer to Nigeria’s vulnerable population in order to offset the impact. The argument is that the money saved from fuel subsidy would then go toward other development and infrastructural projects that the country badly needs. It’s a very logical argument in theory. But does it make practical sense?

Abracadabra! Make section 52 (subsection 2) disappear.
On October 12th, the National Assembly approved amendments to section 52 of the Electoral Act that would empower the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) to implement electronic transmission of election results. But for some reason, that same day, they decided to propose a critical amendment to section 87 of the Electoral Act. The amendment would require political parties to hold direct parties instead of having the option for indirect primaries.
Then they sent all the amendments off to the President for his assent. He returned the bill back to them, unsigned. His reasons for not signing came down to section 87.

Our culture versus her body
A safety pin can protect the baby against evil spirits. Prolonged labour means she cheated on her husband. Swollen feet? She must be having a male child. Her age doesn’t matter as long as she is physically big enough to bear children.

About Afghanistan
On Sunday, August 15th, the world woke up to the news that Afghanistan is once again under the control of the Taliban. The US and other allied nations have been withdrawing troops from Afghanistan since February 2020 and analysts had predicted that the Taliban would probably take over at some point. But the speed at which it happened shocked just about everyone.

Twitter vs. Nigeria: it’s complicated
It’s been over 50 days since the Nigerian government suspended Twitter operations in the country. But, Nigeria is not the only country where Twitter is running into problems and on this week’s episode we invited Nikhil Pahwa from MediaNama, based in India, to share the experiences that the Indian government has been having with social media.
Though the inciting incidents around social media are somewhat similar between our two countries, our governments have reacted differently. Nigeria chose to ban Twitter while India is choosing to regulate them…for now.
So in this episode we ask: did the Nigerian government even have the option to regulate Twitter?
