What is Radical Accountability with Nathan Riley - 38

What is Radical Accountability with Nathan Riley - 38

In this episode, we dive into the world of Radical Accountability with special guest Nathan Riley. The conversation kicks off with a shared frustration towards the conventional medical model for childbirth, especially in the United States where 99 percent of births happen in hospitals. The alarming rise in induction and C-section rates, averaging close to 40 percent nationally, sparks a crucial discussion on accountability.

Nathan Riley, a passionate advocate for radical responsibility, challenges the common narrative of blaming healthcare professionals and institutions while neglecting personal responsibility. The episode explores the disruptive potential of making the existing system obsolete and emphasizes the need for individuals to invest resources, energy, and willpower in preventing reliance on hospitals.

Nathan is a father of two, the second of home was born at home. He’s married to his high school sweetheart, Stephanie. He grows food, reads more than he probably should, and enjoys coffee, mountain biking, and being in nature. He and his wife are perennial Burners. Nathan is also a psychonaut, procuring his own ceremonial medicines for fellow travelers.

In his spare time, he supports clients through fertility challenges, pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. He also supports fathers-to-be through the spiritual transformation of childbirth. He manages a private practice called Beloved Holistics, a private contract association. He also attends home births, and he provides collaborative care for midwives across the country who struggle to find a friendly OBGYN with whom to consult on clients. He also recently started training in jiu jitus.

Skin to Skin Series: Introducing A New Type of Doula: The Kangaroula -30

Skin to Skin Series: Introducing A New Type of Doula: The Kangaroula -30

Madison and I talk about the unique job of being Kangaroulas, a unique birth worker that was developed by Dr. Nils Bergman and his wife Jills Bergman to focus on bonding and attachment of baby and mother. We also talk about our unique premature baby stories.

Madison Hendry (aka Mama Bird), transitioned into motherhood in 2014. As a visual artist and recent graduate in 2011 with a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY, she began to see a shift in her artwork, career, and perspective on life. Her artwork has been exhibited and published internationally and included in pioneering events such as Project AfterBirth; the first-ever international exhibition based on the subject of early parenthood.

With the premature birth of her second son, Madison became fascinated with the dynamics of the mother/infant relationship. She realized her touch, sound, smell, milk, and relationship with him were not only beneficial; she was essential and played an active role in his development. The process of having a premature infant taught her to listen to her instincts and her child's needs and respond to them. Madison received a scholarship and completed her Breastfeeding Educator Certification with Birth Arts International in 2018. She went on to become a Certified Birth Doula with BirthWorks Int. And Certified Kangaroula with Jill & Dr. Nils Bergman in 2020.

Madison has over 9 years (and counting) of personal breastfeeding experience. She lives in a 1950s Sears Home in Cleveland, OH suburbs with her husband, tattooer, Angus Hendry, two boys, Angus and Huckleberry, daughter, Evergreen, and a baby on the way.

HOT TAKE: Challenging Mainstream Birth Work Norms and the Role of Doulas - 29

HOT TAKE: Challenging Mainstream Birth Work Norms and the Role of Doulas - 29

In this episode of the Birth Cafe podcast, host Angel Coleman discusses her evolving views on the necessity of doulas, pointing out that not everyone benefits from or values having a doula during birth. She shares her experience and observations to argue against the mainstream belief that everyone should have a doula, stating that some individuals may not fully utilize or understand a doula's services, which can lead to wasted resources. Additionally, Coleman expresses concern over insurance companies covering doula services, fearing it could lead to a lack of appreciation for doulas' skills and increased control over the profession by the healthcare system. She also advocates for doulas to be recognized as patient advocates and possibly reclassified as bodyworkers to allow for more comprehensive training in physical support techniques.

The bureaucracy of healthcare with Dr. Stu Fischbein of Birthing Instincts - 17

Stuart James Fischbein, MD was Board Certified in 1989 and became a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology in 1990. Dr. Fischbein now practices community-based birthing and works directly with home birthing midwives www.birthinginstincts.com to offer hope for those women who prefer and respect a natural birthing environment and cannot find supportive practitioners for VBAC, twin, and breech deliveries. He is an outspoken advocate of informed decision-making, the midwifery model of care, and human rights in childbirth, receiving the 2016 “Most Audacious” award from HRIC and the Association for Wholistic & Newborn Health.

Today we discussed the challenges of regulations that the healthcare system places on providers that cause challenges in providing optimal care and options for their patients.

Music Therapy in the Perinatal Space with Christina Koenig - 12

Music Therapy in the Perinatal Space with Christina Koenig - 12

Today, Christina introduces us to how we can use music therapy during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. We touch on using music therapy to cope with anxiety during pregnancy, music therapy to cope during birth and using it in postpartum to process your birth.

About our Guest:
Christina Koenig, MT-BC, Birth Doula
Christina attended Shenandoah University where she received her bachelor of music therapy and she has been a board-certified music therapist for 3 years. In those 3 years, she's worked with people in hospice care, memory care, medical settings, and special education. Christina recently started doula work, having been trained through The Autonomy Mommy's doula training. She has completed a course on postpartum music therapy. As Christina learns more about doula work, she continues to see how the benefits of music therapy fit so well into the maternal health space! Christina is currently living in Richmond, Virginia (with her two cats) and they love it here! She loves the brewery scene in this city and being an hour away from the mountains allows her to regularly go backpacking, camping, and Overlanding! (some of my favorite hobbies!)

  • Visit the HHS site above to source the formula they need
  • Connect to share milk systems like Human Milk 4 Human Babies and Eats on Feets for human milk sharing opportunities https://buff.ly/3wnKZhK https://buff.ly/3Lol12a
  • Connect to donor milk sites https://buff.ly/2UHjjQZ

  • Visits the CDC Formula Preparation Site https://buff.ly/3wnxOOb
  • Connect with their local lactation support professional if they wish to try and relactate, induce lactation, or increase/support their milk supply

What should parents try NOT to do?

  • Make homemade infant formula (it lacks vital ingredients for a baby’s growth and development)
  • Hoard formula (Instead, only buy what you need. The AAP recommends only buying 10-14 day supply at a time.)
  • Water down infant formula to extend its life (this can cause serious health issues for your baby)
  • Buy infant formula online from predatory marketplaces
