Why is British Housing SH*T? Architects Perspective.

Why is British Housing SH*T? Architects Perspective.

This is the first episode in a series of special episodes on the state of volume house building located in the UK.

This podcast was generated from a LinkedIn post showing pictures of modern British housing and the post received 104 individual comments and over 25,400 impressions.

The post reads:

When you fly into England you see green….then you land on concrete and drive home on tarmac back to your bland housing estates devoid of vegetation and you enter rooms so small you still think you are on an aeroplane.

Houses that are devoid of proportion, firmness and delight, it’s a SH*T show from start to finish.

Now these houses aren’t cheap! These houses probably weren’t designed by architects and if new are probably full of defects…

Why is British housing generally so SH*T?”

I have with me today an Architect in the UK who wishes to remain anonymous as she has clients who are housebuilders.

The intention is to talk with architects, planners and housebuilders and hopefully, the end users to hear from as many perspectives as possible.

Stayin' Alive: The Architect who cheated DEATH

Stayin' Alive: The Architect who cheated DEATH

In episode 11 of season 3, we hear of the heartbreaking struggle of Amy Francis-Smith who despite all of the odds became an Architect, a successful one at that!

Amy and I ask each one of you who listens to this podcast to support the Architect's Benevolent Society by donating. You know it's the right thing to do. https://absnet.org.uk/get-involved/donate/

Amy's story is of someone who never gave up and is an inspiration to anyone in architecture who is considering throwing in the towel. Try having operations without anaesthetic and then you will understand her strength!

Growing up Amy had over 50 operations on her ear and head whilst also being a carer to her mother who was a wheelchair user. While studying architecture she was diagnosed with Mast cell activation syndrome and Ehlers Danlos syndrome and later Crohn's disease which is a lifelong condition where parts of the digestive system become inflamed.

We discuss Amy's story, her conditions and how she worked through her treatment to become a multiple award-winning architect.

Amy helps individuals, professionals and organisations deliver beautiful spaces, grow inclusive cultures and create a more inclusive world. Should you wish to contact

A VICIOUS cycle can make you VICIOUS

A VICIOUS cycle can make you VICIOUS

In this episode, I talk to Su Butcher who trained as an architect and managed three successful architects’ practices during the ‘90s and noughties. She also managed the first-year design studio at the University of Liverpool School of Architecture from 1992-95 whilst taking a PhD in Architectural Education.

Su’s then setup her own consultancy which offers strategic help to construction product companies who want to communicate better with architects, particularly using digital tools. She also advises contractors, consultants and professional associations, and she writes, trains and speaks about technical construction topics and social and digital media in construction.

We talk honestly about:

- How she got into the architecture profession.

- The taboo subject of 'hobby' vs 'business'

- What she learned from running three architectural practices for 15 years.

- The status of architects in the construction industry and why it's like that.

- Why women are paid less than men.

- Why she has been able to meet so many architectural staff who have been abused, are in debt or both?

- Why architects don't get paid enough and how to change that.

- Why most architects' practices are so small (and unprofitable).

- What she would do for the profession if she had a magic wand...and much more.

Will Generative AI make Architects RICH?

Will Generative AI make Architects RICH?

In this episode we are asking the question, will Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) enable Architects to be highly profitable? AI could give architects the potential to automate many tasks and generate designs from a set of prompts or parameters to do more for less.

We discuss GenAI's future, its limitations, software costs, culture, skills and where AI could add the most value. We talk to computational designers who are architects from different countries.

All guests begin with a six-minute AI statement before I ask more probing questions.

Speakers were: Allister Lewis, London, UK - Founded of Automated Data Driven Design (ADDD) for the Architecture, Engineering and Construction Industry (AEC). Tsvetan Hristov , Leicester, UK - Architect, Technologist and Computational Designer at rg+p Ltd. Gabriel B. Lisbon, Portugal - working as a freelancer. Architects, Let's REDUCE scope and do LESS!

Architects, Let's REDUCE scope and do LESS!

In this episode we are asking the question, do Architects lose focus and deliver more than a client asked for? Do we suffer from scope creep and end up doing lots of things that "A" the client didn't ask for and 'B' giving away far too much for free?

Let's do LESS, by doing the RIGHT things and let's make efficiencies on those services the client requires....right?

In this episode we are joined by Natalia Bakaeva an Architect, artist, and placemaker with over 15 years of experience in design and a passion for creating physical forms that reflect her diverse cultural influences and is based in Toronto Canada.

Natalia is a super smart architect who is multilingual and understands the tech industry and she believes that the TECH sector can help Architects WIN.....at long last.
With a background in architecture, urbanism, and interiors, Natalia has worked on various projects ranging from residential and commercial buildings to art installations and public spaces. She has also taught and published on design, sustainability, and innovation. She founded a-nb, a practice that focuses on creating spaces that enhance the quality of life, environment, and community.

Death of the Architect?

Death of the Architect?

In this episode we are asking the question, "Is the Profession of the Architect DEAD?" The basis for this is that for 7-10 years of study, the salaries you get at the end make for a low Return on Investment (ROI), making the professional unsustainable.

This was a recorded debate with the following people:
Mayowa Daniel Aganna - Part II Architectural Assistant (Bristol, UK)
Bryon McCartney - Branding and Marketing for Architects (Ohio, USA)
Aylin Round - ArchJobs (Scotland, UK)
Jim Rooney - Freelance Architect (London, UK)
Mohammad Balila - Architect and Educator (Dubai, UAE)
Ramon Lorenz - Architect (Karlsruhe, Germany)

Please listen to the end as you will the results of the debate.

Sexual Harassment in Architecture and Construction

Sexual Harassment in Architecture and Construction

This episode is a collection of voices from people from the architecture and construction sector talking about their experience with unwanted sexual harassment during their working day.  Most voices have been created using Artificial Intelligence but the words and the people are real.   AI was used to protect the identity of the originator of each story.

Please listen to the end as you will hear a conversation from myself and Chartered RIBA Architect and Chartered Technologist, Ann Vanner, who is Co-Director of Habitat Architects. Ann gives her thoughts on the episode and suggests some positive ways forward.

Ann did her thesis on "Sexual Harassment" so her insight is a positive conclusion to this often undiscussed issue.

Architects Registration Board fee RISES have to STOP NOW!

Architects Registration Board fee RISES have to STOP NOW!

I’ve started a petition!
In the last 3 years the UK's ARB have increased our architect registration fees by a whopping 67% 😳
In 2021 the fee was £119 and in December 2023 you will be required to pay £199.
At this rate it won’t be long before ARB catchup to RIBA membership levels.
That’s an extra £3.3 million in fees over 3 years! I’m not seeing any of that money going to look after “protection of title” or maybe I’m wrong?

ARB has also announced new fees for schools of architecture for accreditation of courses. Previously there was no fee charged. ARBs' role in monitoring professional standards was seen as part of what the registration fee covered. Now they are asking institutions to pay £9,200 per year from January 2024.

In addition, there are charges for approving course changes at a couple of thousand per course. This is an immediate annual addition to ARB's coffers of about £600,000. There has been no consultation about this.

One wonders what these fees and the registration fees (which must amount to about £9 million) is being spent on.
I will demand a halt to any further increase in fees but what else do you want me to highlight that ARB are not doing right and are they overstepping as a regulator into membership issues?

GONE with the RENT: New York's VANISHING Store Fronts.

This is the thirteenth Episode of Season 2 of The Broke Architect Podcast!

This show is brought to you by the Global Architect Alliance (GAA)

In this episode, we talk to James and Karla Murray who are husband-and-wife architectural and interior photographers and multi-media artists based in New York City. For over twenty-five years they have focused their lens on the streetscape through portraits of storefronts and shop owners and have strived to capture moments of city life that often go undocumented but capture the spirit, energy and cultural diversity of individual neighbourhoods. They made it their mission to thoroughly document unique 'mom-and-pop' stores when they began to notice the alarming rate at which the shops were disappearing.

We discuss the reasons why so many stores are disappearing, never to return and with this the complete disaster of the NEON signs that make New York New York. We discuss AIR RIGHTS that allow super-tall buildings and KATZ'S DELI who made great money selling these rights. We talk about the lack of historic preservation and how chain restaurants could one day KILL the individuality of the city.

Is the Profession of Architecture BROKEN?

Is the Profession of Architecture BROKEN?

This is an audio version of my opinion piece which was published by UK National Architecture Press, Bdonline on the 14th of April 2023. This article is behind a paywall, you have to be a subscriber to read it so I've read the article in full for my listeners.

It is an opinion piece and to those who want to question the contents of this audio reading of this article, I welcome it. Don't sit in silence, stand up as I did and help to sort out the bloody mess we find ourselves in. Architects are indeed superheroes and we deserve respect but let's get to a situation where our investment in education makes not just emotional sense but financial sense!

As a way of giving back to the profession donate to The Broke Architect Podcast's fundraiser for the Architects Benevolent Society, any donation you make could help:

  • Architects, Architectural Technologists, Landscape Architects and employees of architectural practices.
  • Dependants of the above.
  • We offer students of architecture, landscape architecture and architectural technology annual membership to Anxiety UK (AUK) for the duration of their course.
