#34 – Own Your Path

#34 – Own Your Path

Don’t avoid your responsibility to make tough decisions. I think some entrepreneurs push decisions off in the name of employee empowerment. Whether that’s fear, indecision, or just a blatant misunderstanding of what employee empowerment is, it’s bad for the business.

Every single time you compromise, or allow others to compromise, the vision, mission, or purpose of your business, you piss on your company flag. Fiercely defend your organizational philosophy and require the same from your team. It’s not against the rules to demand loyalty and buy in.

#33 – Care Enough to be Tough

#33 – Care Enough to be Tough

This topic keeps coming up in my conversations with professionals. I think that today, we are struggling as small business owners trying to figure out the balance between employee satisfaction and enforcing a standard. And unfortunately, I think too often, leaders are shying away from being tough on their employees fearing the employee will quit.

Here’s the thing, you can be tough and have high expectations and standards, without being an a%# hole. In fact, not being tough is the equivalent of not caring about your team member. If you avoid the tough conversations you are not only hurting your business, but you are hurting that employee too.

If an employee continues to fall short, even after you have had serious conversations (not weak attempts at being Mr./Mrs. Nice Guy), then remember, career transitions are not always a bad thing. The emotions wrapped around family and financial responsibilities may cause the employee to think that being terminated is a bad thing, but sometimes, it’s the best thing for them and your company.

Being tough is not bad, in fact, it’s one of the best things you can do as a leader.

Chris Weir Answers – Are Corporate Profits Really that Bad?

Chris Weir Answers – Are Corporate Profits Really that Bad?

It’s become popular to poo poo on corporate profits, especially in politics and academia. Yet, these two groups are the first to expect business to step up and pay more taxes and support their many different causes. Is it really so complicated to understand the only way for a business to keep their people employed, to pay taxes, to fund initiatives; is for the business to make a profit?

The foundation of a business is profitability. Social responsibility, ethics, sustainability; these are all great things and businesses must pay attention to them. However, they are not foundations for which a business should be built. Without profit, the business closes, and those things really don’t matter much.

#32 – Communicate, Communicate, Communicate

#32 – Communicate, Communicate, Communicate

Proper communicate is so off the scales important, it can’t even be measured. Not just communication with clients and vendors, but just as important, internal communication with your employees and team members.

Too often, we think just because our employees are at work every day, they know everything that’s going on. Unless you have communicated it to them, assume they don’t know. And then, communicate it again and again. Reinforce your message with repetition.

And communicate their performance results. Let them know what they are doing good and acknowledge them very publicly. Also let them know where they are falling short but do that very privately. Communication from leadership is one of the most sought-after staples for employees today.

Build a culture that communicates.

#31 – Sales is Transactional – Service is Relational

#31 – Sales is Transactional – Service is Relational

There is a significant difference between sales and services. It takes two very different strategies and thought processes. Sales is a short-term process. Our goal is very simple, turn the prospect into a client. So, our activities and strategies are centered around this transaction.

Once the transaction is complete, we then have to shift gears into service. This is a long-term process. Our goal is retention of the client over time, ensuring they continue using us into the future. So, our activities and strategies are centered around client loyalty, upsell/resell, etc.

In an ideal scenario, these two roles would be filled by different people. It’s very difficult, and generally unsuccessful, to ask a hunter to be a farmer and even harder to ask a farmer to be a hunter. It takes two completely different types of people to be great at these roles.

At the end of the day, you can have the best marketing and advertising, the most beautiful store, and the greatest products or services; however, if you can’t convert prospects into clients, all of those things are a waste. And then you have to be able to retain those clients or, at the very least, turn them into evangelists for your business; or the sale was a waste.

Make this a focus of your business, trust me, you will be glad you did.

What’s on your bucket list?

What’s on your bucket list?

A bucket list is fun to dream about, but I think it is crucial for entrepreneurs and professionals. It gives you something to strive for that lies outside of your business goals. If the only goals we every set for ourselves are business related, we are missing out on a very big life laying in front of us.

Bright Eyed Bird White Wine

Bright Eyed Bird White Wine

On today’s Wine of the Day, we talk about Bright Eyed Bird White Wine.

Bright Eyed Bird is an exciting blend of Paso Robles’ fine “four V” grapes, giving it a complex nose of citrus blossom, hay, lavender, melon, peach, pear, candied lemon and fig. It is a crisp and refreshing white wine with subtle flavors of apple, pear, lemon, peach, melon and ginger. Delicious layered fruits precede a rich and quenching finish. Bright Eyed Bird will pair very nicely with steamed mussels or crab cakes.

Only $16.99 and exclusively from www.winedowntherapy.com.

#30 – Please… Just Shut Up!

#30 – Please… Just Shut Up!

Too many sales people talk too much. They will talk themselves right out of an easy sale. If they would just shut up and listen, the prospect will almost always tell you want they need or want. Exercise patience when conducting sales calls and allow the conversation to move in the direction the prospect wants.

Consumers, B2B and B2C, are far too informed to think we can guide them through a sales call anymore. They have likely already researched you and your product or service prior to you even arriving. And if you come in running off at your mouth, you’ll completely miss it.

Episode 50

Episode 50

The second you choose to go into business, someone is trying to put you out of business. However, we should welcome that competition, not fear it. Competition fuels innovation, pricing, and growth. When you attempt to beat your competition, that does not mean you are insensitive, bullying, or an ass hole. It means you are a competitor.

There is no 8th place trophy in business. You either win the client or you don’t… period.

#028 – Be Happy

#028 – Be Happy

If given the choice between being happy and being miserable, would you choose happiness? What about with your career? Happiness is fundamental to success. Don’t chase money, trust me, money alone is not a route to happiness. When you’re happy you’re not negative, and negativity is self-duplicating.

What do you want your legacy to be?

What do you want your legacy to be?

Today I answer the question, “What do you want your legacy to be?” In business, that is something very important to think about. I am a big fan of reverse engineering. So, by knowing what I want the end game to be, I can work every day to close the gap.

#027 - The Role of Family in Entrepreneurship

Many entrepreneurs find that managing the expectations of their family is harder than running their business. But, if your business means that much to you, you should be willing to take the time to ensure your family is on board. This week Scott and I talk about the struggles we have had throughout our years as entrepreneurs, and even some of the challenges we still have today.

#026 - Be Authentic

#026 - Be Authentic

Being fully authentic starts with being honest and true to yourself. Then you can begin being authentic to your audience because you are actually being you.

If you fake it til you make it, when you make it, you’re fake – which means you haven’t really made it at all.

One of the biggest reasons I started The Chris Weir Experience was to combat the crap coming from every angle these days. It seems like everyone who knows where to rent a lambo or an Airbnb on the beach can make a social video about becoming a success like them.

My goal for us in 2019 is that we all become fully and truly authentic with ourselves and each other. Be the you that you are – because that is always the best version.

Is Video Marketing still relevant since no one is watching TV anymore?

Is Video Marketing still relevant since no one is watching TV anymore?

Video is still the most effective means to deliver a message to your audience, as long as your video is relevant and valuable to the viewer. Start thinking of your video content as the show instead of the commercial – then you are informing/entertaining versus interrupting. It will dramatically change the way you produce videos.

In addition to TV, viewers have so many options to consume video. Netflix, Amazon, YouTube, Social, on and on. Just because fewer people are watching cable or network TV stations, doesn’t mean they are no longer watching video on their TV Sets. You should still be taking advantage of this incredible medium.

#025 - Be Realistic

#025 - Be Realistic

There is a big difference between aiming too high and challenging or pushing yourself. Dreams are meant to be lofty – nothing good is easy. However, just because your momma says you are a great singer, doesn’t mean that you are a great singer.

Be self-aware, be honest about who you really are and what you are meant to do. If not, you will never find true happiness. And don’t think that working for someone else is less than. You are crazy. Being a team member is only subpar if you are ignoring your calling to lead.

#024 - Social Media Advertising – Yes or No?

#024 - Social Media Advertising – Yes or No?

The thing about marketing and advertising, is that our tools are continually evolving. What worked yesterday may not work today and probably won’t work tomorrow. But then again, it might. The secret sauce is figuring that out.

However, the foundation remains the same… and that is attention. Our purpose is still to connect someone who needs or wants something with someone who has it. It really is that simple.

The best way to do that today, is through Facebook and Instagram Ads. I generally do not recommend clients spend money on social media advertising, but you cannot ignore the performance of these two platforms. Some of the best results I have seen in over 20 years in business.

Is professional Photography and Videography still necessary?

Is professional Photography and Videography still necessary?

Smart phones continue to evolve with some pretty impressive photography and videography abilities. Not to mention the lower cost of consumer and prosumer photography and video equipment. So, with all of this new technology being much more affordable, businesses have to evaluate whether or not we should be budgeting as much for these services.

Today on Chris Weir Answers, I’ll discuss what I believe the role of these professional services are in 2019, and how businesses can optimize their budgets for photography and videography.

#023 - The $1.00 Per Day Rule

#023 - The $1.00 Per Day Rule

Proactively engaging with your audience is one of the most difficult things I have found to discipline myself on. I guess I think about it like I am just chatting at the watercooler, which is just a waste of time. However, we must think about proactive engagement with our audience as marketing, not just chatting. We are trying to earn their attention.

If we do not have our audience’s attention, they will never want to learn more about our business. We must prove that we want a relationship, not just say. The $1.00 per day rule will help you get there. Ad your .02¢ 25 times per day, and you will be on your way.

What is Remarketing, and is it relevant to my business?

Remarketing ads can be a highly effective way to reach those who are already searching for either your business or the services/products your business offers. With only 2% of consumers converting on the first visit, it only makes sense that we continue providing relevant advertising to them as they continue toward making a decision.

Are local SEO and Google Maps still important in 2019?

Are local SEO and Google Maps still important in 2019?

I would argue that Local SEO efforts are more important today than ever before. With 44% of all clicks happening on the maps results and 70% of mobile users clicking on the call button on listings, you must make local SEO a priority in 2019.

Wine of the Day - Fissata Blonde Fizzy White Wine

Wine of the Day - Fissata Blonde Fizzy White Wine

Learn more at: https://www.travelingvineyard.com/guide/winedowntherapy/product/fissata-blonde-MOS103/

The Italian term frizzante refers specifically to the strength and vigor of the bubble or effervesce in a wine, much the way allegro refers to the tempo of a musical composition. Our Fissata Blonde is a frizzante wine, meaning that it is a gently sparkling wine with light and delicate effervescence. This style is ideally suited to the varietal it is made from, a Sicilian Muscat.

For the Fissata we looked to Piedmont, Italy’s Moscato d’Asti model as our starting point. We wanted a wine with crowd-pleasing drinkability that was light on its feet but richly perfumed. To achieve this we opted to blend the best attributes of a Sicilian Muscat and California Muscat (from Northern California, specifically from around Lodi and Woodbridge).

Our base Muscat comes from a trusted Sicilian grower with whom we were annually already working with on another project. We buttressed this Sicilian component with the California Muscat. The result is a lightly sparkling wine that oozes notes of white flowers, mandarin orange and peach. It is as playful to drink as it is serious with food, pairing beautifully with everything from vanilla pound cake to blue cheese. This gentle sparkler is also just a fabulous way to end a sultry summer evening.

· Retail Price: $18.99

· Vintage: N/V

· Varietal: Moscato Terre Siciliane IGP

· Alcohol: 11.5%

· Region: Italy

· Winemaking: We blended our drier Sicilian Muscat to the desired sweetness with our Lodi Muscat component, all-the-while “initiating” the wine’s spritz via a process learned in both Prosecco & the Napa Valley, at our world-famous-for-bubbly Hammondsport, NY facility.

Tasting Info

· Color: Pale lemon

· Body: Light to medium.

· Smell: Abundant nose of white flowers, peach, mandarin orange and nectarine.

· Taste: Dominant mandarin orange note on the palate. Also, some dried apricot with hints of ripe melon and nectarine.

Sommology

· Sommology Code: S332

· Suggestions: Spicy dishes (Indian/Thai curry, buffalo chicken), shellfish (crab, lobster, shrimp), breakfast pastries, pancakes, prosciutto, chicken, light fish, ham, brie, biscotti, grilled peaches, peach shortcake, succulent cherry pie, creamy cheesecake, orange sorbet, glazed pastries, nougat, fruit tarts, cream desserts and those incorporating mascarpone cheese. It’s also great with lemon-poppy-seed cake or plain pound cake with caramel sauce, walnuts, banana slices and possibly dried apricots.

#021 - If Everything Adds Up, Don’t Use Algebra

Algebra sucks!! It’s pointlessly complicated. Why would you add letters to a problem you can solve with simple addition or subtraction? Yet, we do this in business all the time. We have an excellent plan, an excellent team in place to execute the plan, and we complicate it with worry, doubt, and stress of things that haven’t even happened. I can’t guarantee results, but I can guarantee that if you keep complicating and not moving, you will not reach your goals.

Should I continue marketing or advertising even if I have a ton of business right now?

Should I continue marketing or advertising even if I have a ton of business right now?

The short answer is yes. You worked really hard to get the attention of your audience and to build the business you have, if you disappear from marketing, it will be harder to get them back the second time around. Start working on depth not width, begin a loyalty campaign. But do not disappear.

Wine of the Day - Armatura Marche Rosso

Wine of the Day - Armatura Marche Rosso

Learn more at: https://www.travelingvineyard.com/guide/winedowntherapy/product/2015-armatura-marche-rosso-italy/

In a nation with as much ancient winemaking history as Italy’s it’s a challenge to find an under-the-radar region, but the wines of the Marche in Central Italy may just be the country’s best-kept secret. The region sits in the center of the country, skirting its eastern edge and bordering the Adriatic Sea. With ideal exposure to the sun and the cooling influences of the Apennine Mountains, this area has a historical predilection to red grape varietals. It is rich with such native varietals as Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Passerina and Pecorino.

Our red blend comes from vineyards situated high in the hills of the southern Marche overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Our grower’s co-op was established in 1969 by a group of 150 farmers that were tired of accepting the oppressive conditions of the local private wine firms that bought their grapes. Since then the winery has grown in size and talent and today numbers upwards of 300 members.

We were fortunate to be able to work with smaller lots of Montepulciano and Cabernet Sauvignon that had been set aside from regular production due to longer maceration - approaching three weeks with the skins. This additional maceration time delivered even more complexity and nuance to our final blend, yielding a wine of fine structure, balance and mouthfeel.

Gold Medal Winner – World Wine Championships

· Retail Price: $22.99

· Vintage: 2015

· Varietal: A blend of 50/50 Montepulciano and Cabernet Sauvignon

· Alcohol: 14.4%

Tasting Info

· Color: Inky, opaque garnet

· Body: Medium to full bodied

· Smell: Earth, black pepper, ripe red and brown fruits with hints of smokiness

· Taste: Earth, black pepper, ripe red and brown fruits with hints of smokiness

#020 – Is College Still Worth It Today?

It’s become popular to poo poo on college today, especially from entrepreneurs. However, is it completely justified? Are there any scenarios, other than medical/legal/science/etc. degrees, that make sense? Is it better to just skip college and go straight to making money? Let’s talk about it.

What’s the difference between Marketing and Advertising?

What’s the difference between Marketing and Advertising?

The difference between marketing and advertising goes far beyond simple semantics. There are fundamental distinctions in strategy, messaging, tone, and delivery. Marketing is long term, branding, and depth. Advertising is short term, sales, and width. Both are incredibly important, but should never be combined.

Wine of the Day - Activist Syrah

Wine of the Day - Activist Syrah

Learn more at: https://www.travelingvineyard.com/guide/winedowntherapy/product/2016-activist-syrah-private-reserve/

Syrah is a wine varietal that enjoys two very distinct styles based on the growing conditions. In general, the Syrah grown in a hot sunny climate produces a dense, fiercely concentrated red wine loaded with spicy meaty notes. Syrah cultivated in climates with cooler nights and less balmy conditions is much more elegant and refined with mineral and graphite notes underneath a blanket of ripe black fruits. Our Activist is the latter style of wine with vibrant aromas, a touch of mineral and notes of sleek blackberry and blueberry fruits.

Grown in the Paradise Vineyard in Santa Barbara County the fruit for this wine was ripened under sunny skies and nicely cooled at night thanks to the Pacific Ocean influence. This year’s Paradise Vineyard Syrah was hand-picked over a two-day period to ensure uniform ripeness and quality. The two different lots were fermented and aged separately and later blended.

The marriage of fruit and complexity lend this wine a significant edge when it comes of food pairings. Have fun with pairings and try it with everything from charcuterie to grilled tuna.
