The Culture Hour Ep 57 Shelley Smith & Meghan Gardner

The Culture Hour Ep 57 Shelley Smith & Meghan Gardner

Continuing the series of CEO responses to a recent Forbes article, I spend time with a dozen CEO, Founders and Presidents to further unpack how and why they are leaning into their workplace culture, training and development more now than ever during the many 2020 crisis.

Listen in for answers from today's guest Meghan Gardner, Guardian STEM Adventures

To get you going, two questions I asked Meghan and her response:

Q: How much did you spend per employee before vs. now on training and development?

A: We have spent about 3x more on staff appreciation gifts, staff socializing time (while being paid), more paid breaks, and more one-on-one touch time and training with them.  As the CEO, I am the only one who went on unemployment so that my salary could help support our staff.

Q: What happened that shifted your thought process?

A: I knew that I could not wait for my staff to tell me that they were experiencing stress or that they needed a break... or that they were scared of the uncertainty. I couldn't see their body language and wouldn't be able to connect incidentally with them so we had to go on our understanding of how we thought they would feel. By being proactive in addressing these issues, we saw staff performance increase drastically.  In fact, more than ever before.

More on Meghan and Guardian STEM Adventures:

Meghan Gardner is the founder and CEO of Guard Up, Inc. and Guardian Adventures, which owns and operates Wizards & Warriors and Zombie Summer Camps, programs and events. These informal educational camps and events are STEM and story-based experiences where instead of watching movies or playing video games about heroes, mythological creatures, mystery, and adventure, the participants get to live the adventure. For the past 20 years, Meghan has headed up the formation of programs and camps for kids, teens, and even adults to play a character of their own design and fighting monsters with foam swords or NERF Blasters, physics, biology, chemistry, and more.

Meghan is the Lead STEM Curriculum Designer for ST Unitas (the parent company of The Princeton Review) in the development of their Mission to Mars STEM Adventures in east Asia and in the USA. She is also a guest lecturer at Harvard Graduate School of Education and other major universities, and an international speaker on the topic of Informal Education and Learning for all ages. She has been interviewed by NPR, the Joseph Campbell Foundation, The New Yorker, Disney Radio, Wired Magazine, and all of the major news outlets regarding her company’s innovative approach to STEM education and using entertaining and immersive stories to inspire informal learning.

In her free time, Meghan volunteers for hospice and works with terminally ill patients of all ages as well as their families. At Guardian Adventures, we inspire our heroes to become lifelong learners who want to make a difference in the world.  We do this by creating a safe, fun, and educational environment where they can learn and grow. As a company, we aspire to be the preeminent source for story-based informal education while acting with courage, honor, and compassion.

Ep 56 The Culture Hour with Shelley Smith and Daniel Koffler

Ep 56 The Culture Hour with Shelley Smith and Daniel Koffler

In the next series of The Culture Hour Podcasts, I spend time with a dozen CEO, Founders and Presidents to further unpack how and why they are leaning into their workplace culture, training and development more now than ever during the many 2020 crisis.

Listen in for answers from today's guest Daniel Koffler.

To get you going, one question I asked Daniel and his response:

What happened that shifted your thought process around workplace culture, training and development spending during a crisis?

We were dragged into a global pandemic (along with the rest of the world) and weren’t able to spend as much time (quality or quantity) with our colleagues, with whom we spend a majority of our waking hours under normal circumstances.   We knew we had to do something to fill that gap, and thought it would be the best use of resources to do that in a way that not only helped address the current challenge, but made us better on the other side.

More on Daniel and New Frontiers

As President of New Frontiers, (www.nfil.net), Daniel provides the overall strategic direction and short/long term planning agenda, while overseeing the financial, marketing and business development aspects of the business.  NF is an executive functioning coaching organization.  NF provides academic, social, transitional and vocational supports to students with a range of abilities and interests, allowing them to maximize their potential—successful, independent, self-advocating adults.   After the sale of a majority of the assets of MetSchools, his family’s education business, Daniel’s focus moved to the special education practice within the MetSchools portfolio (including Aaron School, www.aaronschool.org, and Rebecca School, www.rebeccaschool.org).

This ultimately led to the founding of NF, in response to a recurring pattern of students (with or without learning differences) transitioning to college (and/or other post High School life experiences) without being fully prepared for the new expectations assigned to them at the next stage of life.   NF’s individualized coaching model works on the HOW to address the initial challenges of establishing strategies for success, while ultimately reducing our presence in the equation (as self-advocacy skills improve) so that there isn’t a continuous reliance on the coach—rather, that responsibility is shifted to the individual receiving support.

Daniel is a member of Young Presidents Organization (http://www.ypo.org/) and holds a BS in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing from George Washington University (www.gwu.edu). Personally, he is married with 3 children, including a set of twins.

In my 53rd episode of #TheCultureHour I have a discussion with guest Scott Miller, EVP with FranklinCovey. May 19th you can grab the 30th year anniversary updated version of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey with 1000 added words by Sean Covey.

Scott is in his 25th year with FranklinCovey.com. Scott is a successful author, podcaster and Inc.com ongoing contributor.

An Interview Snippet from Scott
"I think the biggest idea I learned from Dr. Covey answers this question. He wrote the book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Lots of times in interviews we'll have the press called the seven habits of highly efficient people, right? Or successful people. He was very deliberate around using the word effective. And he taught me, there's two kinds of mindsets. There's an efficient mindset and there's an effectiveness mindset. Efficient and effective. One's not bad, but one is better when it comes to relationships...

"The challenge is a lot of high producing, high productive people who write lists and get things done that get then move into leadership. They take that efficiency mindset, Shelley, and they try to move that into their relationships when in fact, if you want to build a culture, if you want to build relationships, you have to move from an efficiency mindset into an effectiveness mindset. Dr Covey said with people - fast is slow and slow is fast...
