The Doctor Doom Cast Episode 20: "You Insufferable Fool!" (Fantastic Four #155, "Battle Royal!", Fantastic Four #156, “Middle Game!”, Fantastic Four #157 “The Endgame Cometh!")

Welcome back to the world-famous Doctor Doom Cast!

Broadcasting live from different corners of Latveria, we dig into Fantastic Four #155, "Battle Royal!" Fantastic Four #156, “Middle Game!”, and Fantastic Four #157 “The Endgame Cometh!”. Oh man, this story is all over the board!

Where to begin? Doom revels in his villainy by stealing the Silver Surfer's girlfriend and maybe even marrying her (although...did he really? Or did he just say that he did?) And is she even the Surfer's girlfriend? The Surfer seems to think so, but she...seems to think otherwise? Doom blackmails the Surfer into attacking the Fantastic Four, and concocts an overly elaborate scheme to utilize (but not directly wield) the Surfer's power?

Our review leads us to questions like, what kind of programming would be on a Doom-based TV network? "Mad About You" reruns? What is the exact location of Latervia? Why do Latverians sometimes seem to have a Scottish accent? Does Doom employ a toy maker to create his various action figure/chess sets? And if so, what's that guy's turnaround time?

We also learn what "zugzwang" means and discuss a somewhat dated reference to one Mr. O.J. Simpson!

Listen now!!! DOOM COMMANDS IT!!!

In addition, Doom further commands you to visit
Super G.A.L.S.: Left Far Behind | Indiegogo and offer up a portion of your laughably meager funds to this effort, so that you and your fraudulent friends may one day possess a copy of the terrific "Super G.A.L.S.: Left Far Behind" graphic novel!

The Doctor Doom Cast, Episode 19: "You Ungrateful Water-Snipe!" (Giant-Size Super Villain Team Up #1)

The Doctor Doom Cast, Episode 19: "You Ungrateful Water-Snipe!" (Giant-Size Super Villain Team Up #1)

Hello Latveria! (and beyond!) Welcome back to the world-famous Doctor Doom Cast!

Join us for yet another exhilarating episode! We review Giant-Size Super Villain Team Up #1, a flashback issue that features Doom and his frenemy Namor debating whether they should once again join forces (since they've both betrayed each other multiple times in the past). This mega-sized issue contains one new wraparound story, "Encounter at Land's End", and some reprints of a few other classics: "In The Darkness Dwells...Doom!" (originally printed in Submariner #20) and "This Man...This Demon!" (originally printed in Marvel Super-Heroes #20, and covered on
Episode 9 of this very podcast! )

We also learn from Bill that Namor was an influence on rock legend Gene Simmons (!), and that there was once a comic book company war for the word "superhero"! In addition, our discussion of Doom's greatest foes reaches a fever pitch due to Bill's hatred of the accursed Squirrel Girl!

All this and more, including our ponderings on how technology continues to fail humanity, the advantages (if there are any) of having our minds placed "Freejack" style within Emilio Estevez' current body, the leaps and bounds (apparently) made in fire extinguishing equipment since the early '70's, and whether or not Craig will one day mistakenly end up on display in a carnival freak show!

The Doctor Doom Cast, Episode 18: "Silence, You Brainless Boor!" (Fantastic Four #143, "The Terrible Triumph of Doctor Doom!", Fantastic Four #144, "Attack!")

The Doctor Doom Cast, Episode 18: "Silence, You Brainless Boor!" (Fantastic Four #143, "The Terrible Triumph of Doctor Doom!", Fantastic Four #144, "Attack!")

Welcome back to the world-famous Doctor Doom Cast! That's right, our fanbase is now GLOBAL!!!!!

On this episode, we review Fantastic Four #143, "The Terrible Triumph of Doctor Doom!" and Fantastic Four #144, "Attack!". Bill's not a fan of these issues, but we give it a go anyway! If nothing else, Craig maintains that these are good Doom issues (if not necessarily good Fantastic Four issues), and since this isn't a Fantastic Four podcast, that's ok!

We follow the good doctor as he dishes out some great insults to his enemies, sets up an alumni meeting (?) to humiliate his former fellow college students, including the previously unseen "Sam" (?), reveals a "hidden fortress" (which of course, isn't hidden, once he reveals it), and switches gears from attempting world domination to attempting world destruction!

Also covered in this episode: Bill's irritation with artists who don't color Doom's eyes correctly, the sad end of "Flunky of the Month" Gort (Is "Gort" short for "Gary"?), the true value of Latverian currency, the fact that there are so few successful middle management types in the world of villainy, and why the janitor at the Baxter Building needed a degree to mop the floor.

All this and more! Listen now! DOOM COMMANDS IT!!!

The Doctor Doom Cast, Episode 17: "Silence, You Incompetent Worm!" (Luke Cage #8, "Crescendo!", Like Cage #9, "Where Angels Fear To Tread!")

The Doctor Doom Cast, Episode 17: "Silence, You Incompetent Worm!" (Luke Cage #8, "Crescendo!", Like Cage #9, "Where Angels Fear To Tread!")

"Where's my money, honey?" This episode of The Doctor Doom Cast is brought to you by The Yancy Pizza Palace. Stop in for a slice, mention us, and see what happens! (And then let us know what happens...We're very curious!)

On this episode of The Doctor Doom Cast, we review Luke Cage #8, "Crescendo!" and Luke Cage #9, "Where Angels Fear To Tread!". The legendary "hero for hire" accepts a seemingly simple missing persons case for $200 a day (a bit cheap for a superhero?) which turns into a bizarre series of robot fights and inevitably leads him to a series of run-ins with everyone's favorite Latverian, Doctor Victor Von Doom!

We see some odd sides to Doom's personality in these issues, and as professional Doom commentators, it falls to us to look at these instances and ask the hard questions, such as, is Doom a deadbeat? And what does Doom carry in his wallet? (Burger King coupons?)

We also wonder why Doom seems to employ Mouseketeers as guards, consider Jon Hamm as Reed Richards in our fantasy casting of a Doom movie, and discuss the potential significance of being mentioned in Phil Fox's "Broadway" column (Is it a valuable reference? Or, to paraphrase Luke Cage, can Phil Fox, "climb a tree"?)

The Doctor Doom Cast, Episode 16: "I Have No Use For Such Musings!" (Submariner #47, "Doomsmasque!", Submariner #48, "Twilight of the Hunted!", Submariner #49, "The Dream Stone!")

The Doctor Doom Cast, Episode 16: "I Have No Use For Such Musings!" (Submariner #47, "Doomsmasque!", Submariner #48, "Twilight of the Hunted!", Submariner #49, "The Dream Stone!")

Latverian rebels Craig and Bill (wait, are we Latverian "rebels", or Latverian "rabble"?) return for more Doom related goodness!

On this episode of the world-famous Doctor Doom Cast, we look at Submariner #47, "Doomsmasque!", Submariner #48, "Twilight of the Hunted!", and Submariner #49, "The Dream Stone!". As Bill notes right at the beginning, this might be the only known instance of a comic book featuring Doctor Doom, The Submariner, and a pimp (although, it's never explicitly called out that said character is a "pimp").

But...Neptune's Trident! While this "pimp" fellow is certainly...puzzling, to say the least, he's somehow NOT the most reprehensible character in this storyline! That title must go to one of Doom's henchmen, the repugnant "Wilson", who sets a new standard in awfulness, even for evil toadies!

We get to see more of Doom as a "man of wealth and taste" art critic (Why haven't we ever gotten a story where Doom attends an art exhibit? Or meets Andy Warhol?) and find that he seems to have a soft spot for the elderly (well, they could have been middle-aged, we're not sure). We also wonder how Doom hires his flunkies? Is there a Latverian HR department? We discuss the odd artwork that went into creating MODOK, and Bill catches a reference to "Godzilla" that breaks apart the space-time continuum and makes us ponder why people looked so much older in the past? (Even when drawn!) People younger than we are now looked twice as old!

The Doctor Doom Cast, Episode 15: "Enter, Lackeys!" (Incredible Hulk #143,"Sanctuary!", The Incredible Hulk #144,"The Monster and The Madman!")

The Doctor Doom Cast, Episode 15: "Enter, Lackeys!" (Incredible Hulk #143,"Sanctuary!", The Incredible Hulk #144,"The Monster and The Madman!")

Live from Latveria, it's The Doctor Doom Cast!

In this episode, we look at Doom's encounter with the Incredible Hulk! We review The Incredible Hulk #143,"Sanctuary!" and The Incredible Hulk #144,"The Monster and The Madman!". Doom has plans for the beleaguered Dr. Bruce Banner (or more to the point, Banner's alter-ego, The Hulk). Doom also continues to have a very loose definition of diplomatic immunity, and declares himself a "prisoner of love" to the returning Valeria. Would these two benefit from couples counseling?

And who would give that counseling? Perhaps the shady Doc Sampson? We spend a little time discussing Doc's questionable medical ethics, compare his creepiness to Doom's, and wonder if Doc Sampson is a worse doctor than Dr. David Blake?

We also talk about the the sadistic tendencies of General "Thunderbolt" Ross, who makes his own daughter watch footage of her boyfriend being killed (after mocking said boyfriend), realize that we know very little about the ranking system within the US military, and remember how we both failed Arnold Schwarzenegger's fitness challenge back in the '90's.

Also, our fantasy casting for a Dr. Doom film continues! Would
Goran Visnjic make a great Doom? We think so! Tell us your thoughts!

The Doctor Doom Cast, Episode 14: "Silence, Buffoon! (Thor #182, "The Prisoner...The Power...And...Dr. Doom!", Thor #183, "Trapped in Doomsland!")

The Doctor Doom Cast, Episode 14: "Silence, Buffoon! (Thor #182, "The Prisoner...The Power...And...Dr. Doom!", Thor #183, "Trapped in Doomsland!")

"Greetings, fools!"  Welcome back to The Doctor Doom Cast, the world's leading Doctor Doom focused podcast!

In this episode, we review the good doctor's run-in with the Mighty Thor! We start with a look at Thor #182, "The Prisoner...The Power...And...Dr. Doom!" and then move on to the thrilling conclusion in Thor #183, "Trapped in Doomsland!"

Thor stumbles upon a protest at the Latverian embassy, which quickly turns into a scuffle between "hippie anarchists" and...conservatives(?) (If you are against those protesting Doom, are you yourself then....pro-Doom?) Thor involves himself in the situation, and uses his alter ego as "lame physician" Dr. Donald Blake to get himself closer to Doom. Thor/Blake then goes on to prove himself to be maybe the worst medical professional of all time, as he reveals perhaps the most unsympathetic and just downright offensive bedside manner ever portrayed in fiction.

We discuss Doom's disregard for hippies, question if he might be a Facebook stalker, and ponder his feelings on print news. Is Doom an avid reader of the Daily Bugle, and if so, what is his reading routine? Does he enjoy the comics section? Is he a fan of "Funky Winkerbean", or perhaps "The Family Circus"? Is he a coupon clipper? Bill augments this discussion with his first-hand insight into the sometimes shady world of print newspapers, including what really happens when someone yells, "Stop the presses!" (Spoiler alert: Usually nothing)

Meanwhile, our survey continues! Ask yourselves this, and let us know your thoughts: Who are Doctor Doom's greatest and worst adversaries? Define "greatest" and "worst" however you'd like. "Greatest" can mean toughest to defeat, closest to Doom's level of greatness, etc., and for the sake of this survey, we'll assume Reed Richards is a given. "Worst" could mean least competent, easiest to hate, most unworthy of being considered a Doom foe; however you'd like to define it. Let us know your thoughts!

The Doctor Doom Cast, Episode 13: "What Is It, Blithering Ones?" (Astonishing Tales #6-#8)

The Doctor Doom Cast, Episode 13: "What Is It, Blithering Ones?" (Astonishing Tales #6-#8)

"Greetings, fools!"  The world's leading Doctor Doom focused podcast returns!

This episode finds us diving into Astonishing Tales #6, "The Tentacles Of The Tyrant!", Astonishing Tales #7, "...And If I Be Called Traitor!", and Astonishing Tales #8, "...Though Some Call It Magic!"

Doom fights the Black Panther, who, as Bill tells us, was briefly known as "Black Leopard"? This begs the question...are there black leopards?

We learn that Doom is pro torture (sometimes?), and seemingly has disdain for hunters (and perhaps a love of endangered species?) He also has a henchman named "Ramon"? Was he the inspiration for WWE legend Razor Ramon? (Our verdict: probably not).

We get Latverians speaking with a Scottish accent, and we continue the search for the elusive letterer extraordinaire Jean Izzo. We also learn that Bill does NOT travel back in time to do research for each show (as Craig does), question just how much administrative work goes into trying to conquer the world, and ponder why the greatest comic book villain of all time (that would be Doom) had to share a comic title with...Kazar.

Also, ask yourselves this, and let us know your thoughts: Who are Doctor Doom's greatest and worst adversaries? Define "greatest" and "worst" however you'd like. "Greatest" can mean toughest to defeat, closest to Doom's level of greatness, etc., and for the sake of this survey, we'll assume Reed Richards is a given. The Doctor Doom Cast, Episode 12: "This For Your Childish Games!" (Astonishing Tales #4, "The Invaders!", Astonishing Tales #5, "A Land Enslaved!")

"Greetings, fools!"

The Doctor Doom Cast returns with a look at some of Doom's "greatest hits"! If you ever need examples to help highlight why Doom is the GREATEST VILLAIN of ALL TIME, you'll find them in the issues covered here today!

This episode finds us diving into Astonishing Tales #4, "The Invaders!", and Astonishing Tales #5, "A Land Enslaved!". Doom has defeated the lackluster Rudolpho and heads off to the French Riviera for a vacation, leaving Latveria to fall into the hands of the Red Skull and his pitiful band of henchmen known as the Exiles, a D-list group which includes such notable luminaries as Cadavus (the "Monarch of the Murder Chair"), Krushki (a shirtless wrestler), and Baldini (who wears a fez and assaults people with a towel...let that one sink in a bit).

You get Doom in all his glory, throwing out terrific insults and one-liners and making a mockery of the Skull and his sad gang of toadies. We also find out that Doom sleeps in his armor and has no use for casino gaming! (Listeners who create deep fakes, how about creating a deep fake version of "Casino" starring Doctor Doom?)

We discuss our feelings on how joyous it may or may not be to place people in mummy cases, and as a special bonus, Bill gives us his review of the 1989 horror classic "Pet Cemetery" starring "The Dollar General version of Paul Rudd", which leads us to ask the question, "Has any plan that involves bringing someone back from the dead ever turned out well?"

The Doctor Doom Cast, Episode 11: "You Pitiable Wretch!" (Astonishing Tales, Episodes 1-3)

The Doctor Doom Cast, Episode 11: "You Pitiable Wretch!" (Astonishing Tales, Episodes 1-3)

The Doctor Doom Cast is filmed before a live studio audience!

Those pesky Latverian rebels (or are they Latverian "rabble"?) can't stop the world's leading Doctor Doom-based podcast! In this episode we move over to the "Astonishing Tales" series, an otherwise fine collection, except that it takes away space that could have been given to Doom and instead gives that space to...Ka-Zar? (Sorry, all you Kaz-ar fans, but more Doom and less Ka-Zar, please!)

We cover Astonishing Tales #1, "Unto You Is Born...The Doomsman!", Astonishing Tales #2, "Revolution!", and Astonishing Tales #3, "Doom Must Die!" Along the way, we see Doom dealing with an uprising in Latveria, led by the largely ineffectual Rudolfo, whose plan involves trying to fool Doom with a Valeria look-alike (which, incidentally, looks nothing like the real Valeria). Rudolfo is backed up by the equally lackluster Faceless One (whose name is representative of his brand of generic villainy!)

We also discuss whether the great William Shatner could have played Rudolfo in a film version of this storyline, the great artwork of the fabulously named Wally Wood, the mysterious letterer extraordinaire Jean Izzo, the failed push of "The Master of Menace" as a nickname for Doom, and the question on everyone's mind: when robots bring an unconscious woman into your home, claiming that said woman looks like your lost love (even though she obviously doesn't), is your first and primary action to hook her up to a hypno-probe? (Bill says "Yes!")

The Doctor Doom Cast, Episode 10: "Silence, You Sniveling Jackanape!" (Fantastic Four #85-#87)

The Doctor Doom Cast, Episode 10: "Silence, You Sniveling Jackanape!" (Fantastic Four #85-#87)

Live from Latveria, it's The Doctor Doom Cast, the world's leading Doctor Doom-based podcast! (Of all the podcasts dedicated solely to Doctor Doom, we've determined we're #1. How, you ask? How indeed!)

This week we wrap up the latest Doom story arc, starting with Fantastic Four #85, "Within This Tortured Land" and moving on to Fantastic Four #86, "The Victims!". These first two issues continue on with the storyline started in Fantastic Four #84 ""The Name is Doom!", with Doom dealing with the meddlesome Fantastic Four as they attempt to investigate Doom's doings and upset the Latverian populace!

Then....let's just say, things take a turn in Fantastic Four #87, "The Power and the Pride!". A manic Doom decides to rebrand himself as sort of a Marvel Universe Mick Jagger, "a man of wealth and taste", as he reveals himself to be some sort of frustrated musician/performer/art aficionado?

We also shop for real estate with Sue Richards, see Reed Richards reach a new low in his chauvinism ("women folk"?), laugh about The Thing's "super breath", discuss Doom's somewhat bizarre dinner selection choices for his guests (ham and doughnuts?), ponder if Sue should have named her baby after Doom, discuss the laughably low regard of Doom's henchman Hauptman, and consider Doom's impending feud with Howard Stern for supremacy of morning radio (will Doom be forced to team up with the accursed Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling?)

All this and more! Listen now! Doom commands it!

Today's episode is brought to you by the good folks at the Yancy Pizza Palace! Stop on in for a slice, and use the offer code "Super Breath" to get their pizza and pop combo deal!

The Doctor Doom Cast, Episode 9: "Not For Me Are The Putrid Pledges Of Diplomatic Immunity!" (Marvel Super-Heroes #20, "This Man, This Demon", Fantastic Four #84, "The Name is Doom!")

The Doctor Doom Cast, Episode 9: "Not For Me Are The Putrid Pledges Of Diplomatic Immunity!" (Marvel Super-Heroes #20, "This Man, This Demon", Fantastic Four #84, "The Name is Doom!")

Live from Latveria, it's the Doctor Doom Cast, the world's leading Doctor Doom-based podcast in the market today!

This week we cover Marvel Super-Heroes #20, "This Man...This Demon!". Larry Lieber and Roy Thomas take over for Stan Lee at telling the good doctor's story, which involves some unabashed retconning of Doom's origin story to include Valeria (the love of Doom's life, whom he had more or less forgotten about?), an appearance by Diablo and his funky wardrobe, and Doom forgetting that he once built a time machine!

From there it's over to Fantastic Four #84, "The Name is Doom!" and the beginning of a multi-issue storyline. Nick Fury (who apparently has more important things to do and is too busy to worry about Doom) pawns off a Doom-related mission on the Fantastic Four. We get a Sue Richards stand in, video calls that work better in the 1960's than they do today, and one of Craig's favorite Doom tropes, Doom lounging!

We also discuss Bill's agitation with colorists who don't color Doom's eyes the correct color, the shady world of PO Boxes, the questionable riches promised by GRIT, whether or not $1.98 for a karate mastery class (complete with outfit!) is a good investment, and the failed (and puzzling) push of the Inhumans!

All this and more! Listen now! Doom commands it!

The Doctor Doom Cast, Episode 8: "Your Prattle Begins to Bore Me!" (Daredevil #37, "Don't Look Now, but it's...Doctor Doom!", Daredevil #38, "The Living Prison")

The Doctor Doom Cast, Episode 8: "Your Prattle Begins to Bore Me!" (Daredevil #37, "Don't Look Now, but it's...Doctor Doom!", Daredevil #38, "The Living Prison")

Live from Latveria! This week, the world's highest rated Doctor Doom-focused podcast reviews Daredevil #37, "Don't Look Now, but it's...Doctor Doom!" and Daredevil #38, "The Living Prison".  The good Doctor has a plan that requires him to inhabit Daredevil! Why, you ask? Well....we're asking as well (it wasn't incredibly clear). Maybe our in-depth review can help shed some light? Hijinks ensue as Doom poses as Daredevil, and Daredevil pretends to be Doom...was this the inspiration for the classic John Travolta/Nicolas Cage film "Face Off"? (Probably not, but it's still fun!)

We also talk about the wonderful artwork of Gene Colan, mock the ineffectual villainy of The Trapster, ponder the fact that there is no "Doom-mobile" (Doom has to make do with a generic bad-guy car?), wonder what kind of cookies and cars Doom would prefer, and speculate on the mechanics behind Marvel's fabled "No-Prize" award. (Is it an actual prize....or isn't it....?)

The Doctor Doom Cast, Episode 6, a.k.a. "Enough Idle Musing!" (The Avengers #25, "Enter Doctor Doom!", Marvel Superheroes episode, "Doctor Doom's Day!")

We're back! After a brief hiatus caused by Latverian rebels, The Doctor Doom Cast returns with a vengeance!

We start with a review of Doctor Doom's appearance in The Avengers #25, "Enter Doctor Doom!". In this issue, Doctor Doom takes a break from humiliating the Fantastic Four to toy with The Avengers, give out gold farthings, and be defeated by...sneezing? The Thing gives a shout out to "The World's Greatest Rock-N-Roll Band", and we wonder, "What does Latverian music sound like?"

From there, we review the "Marvel Superheroes" cartoon episode, "Doctor Doom's Day!". Ostensibly starring The Submariner (although we all know that Doom is the real star of this and any media in which he appears!) and featuring the vocal stylings of Henry Ramer as the voice of Doom and an odd, off-brand version of the X-Men called "The Allies for Peace" ("Allies for Peace! Bah!"), this one had us wondering; is there a legal standard to how much actual animation must happen in a cartoon to be able to legally refer to it as "animated"?

We also praise the work of Dick Ayers, Gene Colan, and Don Heck (some of the most unsung Marvel creators), ponder on Doom's tendency to spy on his enemies (and the potential downsides of such spying), discuss how air travel has not improved since the 1930's, and rock out to the Submariner's groovy theme song. We also add Charles Grodin to our growing list of celebrity listeners, as Bill casts him as Doctor Doom in the first of our fantasy casting sessions!

Welcome to The Doctor Doom Cast! Episode One

Welcome to the inaugural episode of  "The Doctor Doom Cast" (which we may refer to, at times, as "The Doomcast"! The only podcast focused on the GREATEST comic book villain of ALL TIME, the incomparable Dr. Doom!

In our first episode, we tell you a little bit about who we are and our mission, and then start with a look at the earliest appearances of Dr. Doom, beginning with the good doctor's first appearance in "Fantastic Four #5: Prisoners of Doctor Doom!", and then moving on to his first team up with The Submariner in "Fantastic Four #6: Captives of the Deadly Duo!".

From there we close out with a review of his appearance in "Fantastic Four #10: The Return of Doctor Doom!" and discuss the long-standing question, "Was Lionel Richie's 'Hello' video inspired by this issue?"
