This week I spoke with Erica Komisar who is a clinical social worker, psychoanalyst, parent coach, and author. With 30 years of experience in private practice, she works to alleviate pain in individuals who suffer from depression, anxiety, eating, and other compulsive disorders. By helping them live better lives and have richer, more satisfying relationships, she assists them in achieving their personal and professional goals and living up to their potential.

Dr. Annie DePasquale graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia with her medical degree. She completed her Facility Medicine Residency program at Georgetown University in Washington DC. She founded Collaborating Docs in 2020 by Dr. Annie who is a Board-certified Family Medicine physician who first-hand saw an unmet need of her NP colleagues who needed a supervising physician to practice independently. When Dr. DePasquale realized how hard it is for NPs to find a collaborating physician, she knew she had to do something. The hoops the nurse practitioners and physician assistants had to jump through to start practicing were too exhausting for anyone to handle alone. Dr. DePasquale benefited greatly from the mentorship of NPs throughout her career, especially when she was a green new grad, so she is very committed to giving back to the community that helped her so much. Her mission is to make it easy for NPs to help more patients by having the freedom of choice. Collaborating Docs has helped over 1500 NPs match with collaborating physicians.

This week on the podcast we hear from Stephanie Simmerman, DNP APRN. She is originally from Michigan. Dr. Simmerman has lived in Naples, Florida for over 20 years. She graduated from Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Florida in 2007 and started her healthcare career as a registered nurse with Riverchase Dermatology. In May 2012, in the course of her Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) degree, she obtained the highest scholastic achievement in professional nursing, the Doctorate of Nursing Practice. During her advanced nursing preparation, Dr. Simmerman gained practical experience working directly with nurse practitioners in multiple clinical environments and has even developed programs for work culture competence for dermatology practices. Stacey Stenenga was born and raised in a small town in Michigan. Stacey joined the Air Force to see the world. After 14 years of living overseas and in multiple different states, Stacey moved to Colorado to settle down closer to family. Despite being a critical care nurse for 11 years, her income was nearly cut in half from relocating. In 2018, she found the book “Set for Life” by Scott Trench and became a devout student, learning as much as she could about real estate investing. Stacey has since acquired 4 duplexes and is a passive investor in syndication. Stacey’s love for real estate investing stems from supplementing her salary as a full-time nurse. She is passionate about improving healthcare and advocates for legislation to change the harmful work environment that so many healthcare professionals are forced to tolerate.

Christian Costazza, is a RN BSN who was born in Italy in 1984. He grew up with a pretty challenging childhood, losing his dad when he was 10. He was bullied in middle school, went straight to work after high school, and decided that he wanted to change his life by pursuing his BSN in Nursing. He graduated in 2012 with a BSN. He opened the first nurse-led business in his hometown and decided that he wanted more, so he moved to Ireland with basic English skills. After a few rejections, he chose to study and landed a job in NICU. After a while, he moved to England, where he became a cath lab nurse and went through all the roles, from RN to Director of two departments. He then started looking into the personal development space after having a period of burnout in the middle of the COVID pandemic. He decided to move to the US last year. He is currently based in Florida and works on a 1:1 basis with RNs to support them in navigating/avoiding burnout.

April Waddell, RN, BSN who is a CVICU PEDS RN with nursing experience in adult, medical imaging, emergency, PICU and NICU is on the podcast this week. She immigrated from the Philippines to Chicago when she was five years old. Growing up, she was never taught the power of investing in the stock market or learned about compound interest. Building wealth was never discussed; She was taught to study hard so that she could get a stable and safe job. Building financial security was the main focus of her family. As immigrants, her parents were focused on surviving. They did their best and gave her every opportunity they could, and because of what they started and the foundation they gave her, she now focuses on thriving through investing and making passive income. She wants to take you with her and teach you how to do this too. She wants all nurses to reach that next level of freedom and success. She went from 30K in student loan debt to debt-free in 2 years by developing her unique weekly money date system.

She works part-time as an NP and is the founder of Wild Mother Path, a doula business, in 2022, after a career as a registered nurse in a NICU where she saw firsthand many women struggling postpartum to find a groove in motherhood. She saw the same issues in her personal life as her friends brought their newborn babies home and had little to no support as they recovered and took care of their babies. Shira Page is an NP and clinical lactation counselor working in clinician engagement and education at Bobbie, an infant formula startup. Her career has centered around improving the clinical care of people in their most challenging moments. She studied nutrition and dietetics, followed by a Master Degree in Nursing at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Her clinical expertise includes endocrinology, women’s health, and weight medicine. She worked as a nurse practitioner at Mount Auburn Hospital, focusing on endocrine concerns during pregnancy and postpartum. Lyndsey is a 2012 BSN graduate of Oregon Health & Science University. She has spent most of her nursing experience as an ER nurse. Melissa Pauline is a Nurse Practitioner with over 20 years in the nursing field. She graduated in 2003 with her Associate degree in nursing. In the past five years, Melissa has been working in a community hospital in the Metro Atlanta area, taking care of patients in the inpatient ICU setting. Dr. Jessica  Chung was born in the great state of  New  York.  She attended NYC College of Technology, received her Associate's Degree in Nursing in  2009, and graduated on the Dean’s List for academic excellence.

After graduation, she worked as a charge nurse for a nursing home and as a Nurse Case Manager for a  home care agency, both in Brooklyn,  New York. Ashley is the Founder of Working Mom Notes, a supportive platform for working mothers.  She struggled to find resources as she returned to work after having her first baby.  Her goal was to connect with a few working moms and share “notes” with one another on how to navigate life as a working mother. Ashley knows that being a mom is hard in and of itself.  Add in the stresses of balancing a job and the combination can really take a toll. It's hard to find support and work through the challenges of being a working mom, whether it's a choice or a necessity.

Ashley uses Instagram to shed light on the day-to-day struggles and triumphs of working mothers.  She is known for providing real and raw moments to her audience.  Her goal is to build confidence in working women and help them feel they have a network of others that can relate to their lifestyle.  Also within this network, Ashley provides topics of discussion to help break stereotypes.  Examples include discussing salary gaps, work travel, maternity leave rights, postpartum depression/anxiety, breastfeeding versus formula feeding, and how to set boundaries both professionally and personally.  By broaching these topics, it allows women to see they are not alone and feel more confident in their thoughts and actions.

Ashley has a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training and Biology.  She worked in Manhattan for a physical therapy company as an Athletic Trainer performing sports medicine rehabilitation.  She then went on to graduate school and received a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences and a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies.  She is a Physician Associate (formally Assistant) with a specialty in orthopedics and sports medicine.

Just as her platform has grown, so has her family.  Ashley lives in New Jersey, is married, and is now a mother to three beautiful little girls ages six, four, and two. She currently spends her days focused entirely on Working Mom Notes and advocating for working women nationwide.

Nena Hart is a Registered Nurse with a Masters in Nursing Administration and has a history of transforming stagnant operations struggling with their staffing and systems into thriving regions with high-performing teams.

Through more than a decade of post-acute care leadership, Nena has seen the negative effects of staffing instability on census growth, quality and survey outcomes. Nena was able to grow the census in her own region from 700 to over 1500 patients and opened 10 denovo locations, all in under 3 years.

She is a certified ACHC and CHAP accreditation consultant in Home Care, Palliative Care, Hospice, and Home Health. As the area vice president of operations, she led her region to the largest single-parent provider survey in the nation at that time.

She is a Certified Lean Healthcare Professional (CLHP) and is the Owner of Hart Healthcare Solutions, which helps post-acute care organizations take back the operational health of their organization, improve efficiency, stop the vicious cycle of critical staffing, enhance survey outcomes, and ultimately improve patient care.

She worked her way up the corporate ladder for over 10 years and was finally recruited to her "dream job" as a CEO in Hawaii, only to be fired five weeks later.
Left with a huge new lease and no income, she started her own consulting and coaching company, working from home, matching her CEO salary in half the hours, in her leggings.

Purpose People has grown into a six-figure business that has shipped thousands of orders and delivered hundreds of care packages to nursing units across the country since its inception three years ago. Jacqueline King is a board-certified FNP, currently practicing obstetrics and gynecology for 14+ years. She specializes in caring for low and high-risk obstetric patients, as well as preventative and problem gynecological visits. She is the founder of Perfectly Pregnant Collective, an on-demand online education series that prepares expectant women for their journey to motherhood. Tiffany Gibson, MSN-ED, RN, NPD, CPN graduated from Temple University in 2005 with a Bachelor’s in Public Health. Tiffany obtained her Bachelor’s in Nursing from Drexel University in 2008 and started her nursing career as a pediatric nurse. In 2015 Tiffany enrolled in Walden University to obtain a Master’s degree in Nursing.

In 2016 Tiffany maximized her professional growth by becoming a full-time Clinical Nurse Educator and part-time Adjunct Faculty. She also expanded her expertise and education by obtaining a post-master’s certification in Healthcare Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and concentrating on equity and inclusion in nursing professional development and education. As a new parent and overwhelmed by exhaustion, Jayne left behind her job in corporate sales, ready to fully embrace her new role as a mom. She loved her son, of course, but grew increasingly frustrated by his frequent night wakings. She found herself reading everything she could find in order to get him to sleep through the night. 

Years later, when her daughter was born, Jayne applied what she learned once again, implementing healthy and independent sleep habits very early on, and before long, her entire family was able to get the sleep they needed. It was life-changing!

Friends quickly took notice of the fact that Jayne’s children were both fabulous sleepers, and they began coming to her for help with their own sleep challenges. 

Through word-of-mouth referrals, Jayne began helping friends of friends through the sleep training process. In doing so, Jayne realized her passion and skill for helping families to achieve quality sleep for their children, and Snooze Fest by Jayne Havens was born. Jayne quickly established herself as a leader in the industry, building a strong reputation for taking good care of her clients, providing top-notch service along with expertise, and successfully leading families from desperate and exhausted to grateful and well-rested.

A few years later, Jayne's passion for sleep consulting, her background in sales, and her experience as an entrepreneur collided in a new way. After years of research and educating herself on the science of children’s sleep, child development, and sleep training techniques, and after obtaining her sleep consultant certification, Jayne launched the Center for Pediatric Sleep Management (CPSM)—a sleep consultant certification program with a uniquely self-paced course, integrated learning approach, and full-bodied curriculum.

Through CPSM, Jayne leveraged her proprietary CPSM Success Method to train, mentor, and certify others to do this incredibly rewarding work and set them up for success as both sleep consultants and small business owners. CPSM has trained hundreds of sleep consultants to carry this work forward and continues to grow.

Dr. Efrat LaMandre, Ph.D., FNP-C owns and operates her medical practice, EG Healthcare, which provides pediatric, adult, and geriatric care to over 20K patients. In addition to her primary care practice, she has taken conventional medicine to the next level with her signature process The Knew Method. The Knew Method helps patients take control of their health destiny using a Functional Medicine Approach that empowers them to finally realize that their symptoms are not in their heads. As a result, she helps people optimize their health, prevent illness, reduce medication, and feel great. Dr. E is co-chair of the Staten Island Hospital Board of Trustees. She also serves as the President of the Nurse Practitioner Association State Board. In addition, she is Clinical Faculty at Wagner College. She is also the Primary Care Provider for the City University New York, College of Staten Island Athletic Department. Efrat owns a Medical Scribe company, Hawk Scribes, which allows providers to focus on their patients instead of charting. Dr. E is also a public speaker and offers consulting services to other nurse practitioners who are opening up their practices.
