Hey fam, it shocks me how many people are reluctant to share their wins, their superpowers and exude confidence in their own ability these days. This week I decided it's my friggin' birthday so we're gonna talk about some of the awesome things that have happened, are still happening and will continue to happen in my life. And we touch on how slowing down, breathing and responding to my environment has been formative in my personal and professional development in this, my thirty-third year in this reality. Yo guys, it's Mike. Don't you just love when things work out? It's so rewarding when the healthy choices we make in one area transfer to the other areas of life without us even thinking about it. Exercise and diet tend to have that affect. When you eat well, and move well - things just get better everywhere else.  As a drummer myself, I wanted to get the goods from other drummers to learn what the biggest lifestyle challenges were that were ultimately keeping us away from our craft. I had hundred of chats and took notes. The end product? The Music Fit Method. A completely one-of-a-kind exercise program specifically geared towards helping musicians prepare for, recover from and optimize their performance both on and off the stage. We spend a lot of time being told it's all about affirmations. You'll get everything you want if you just affirm it. I'm going to challenge that. I wanna introduce a concept called Interrogative Self-Talk - getting a conversation with ourselves going. It's super cool. Here's why: Our brain is wired to believe. So, how do we get to the place where we can believe in order to achieve? We gotta actually challenge ourselves. Rationally we then put into order and make sense of things and then work out a way to believe and therefore achieve. Try it out. Boom. If you want to create change you have to do something different.  I've learned this over and over again, and in today's show I speak (on a bit of a rant) about how my ritual has helped shape my current lifestyle and general state of fullfilment. There will be times when I'm happy, times when I'm less happy. Even dare I say "sad"! (For those that know me...I hear your "yeah right!"s) Shit will happen and good shit will also happen. Sticking to a ritual to give yourself time to check in with yourself is what will make the difference. Music is one helluva drug. If you want to get a release of dopamine and oxytocin in your brain, turn on a song you love. According to The New York Times, the “reward” part of the brain lights up when you hear music. They say “the idea that reward is partly related to anticipation (or the prediction of a desired outcome)” is a fact in neuroscience. So when you listen to a song, your brain is trying to figure out what’s going to happen next without you realizing it. Then, whether or not your brain predicts correctly, it rewards itself with a shot of good-feeling chemicals. That’s why anticipation is a great tool to use in your song. It’s the thing that gets you high on music. Music can also heal the brain There’s a thing called music therapy where licensed professionals help people with brain damage, heart problems, or with many different physical issues through the power of music. It’s especially useful for people who have trouble speaking or comprehending language, whether because of a stroke or some other brain injury. Therapists use a style of singing with certain rhythms that can help bring back the cadence of speech. The right side of the brain processes music while the left side processes language, so music therapy can help bridge the gap between the two. Music helps create new neurological pathways. According to Harvard Medical School, patients with speech problems are “capable of singing words that they cannot speak.” And that’s why using “melody and rhythm has long been recommended for improving” speech and language comprehension in patients. In today's show, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Ben Nixon, sound technician, musician and educator residing in Calgary, AB. Ben runs his live sound company, Mossy Rock Productions with the same tenacity that's gotten him to where he is in the industry working for major festivals like Calgary Folk Fest, partnerships with Alberta Music and Project Wild as well as a steady gig at the Mount Royal University's prestigious Bella Concert Hall. With that tenacity, Ben has also experienced physical setbacks and as many of us do, times to call into question if it's all worth the physical and emotional turmoil we place upon ourselves. I know what you're thinking, "the life of a touring musician is full of endless booze, party-time all the time and non-stop fun" - really who wouldn't want to tour the world and play music? Well, herein lies the problem. We all tend to think that this lifestyle is something that it really is not. You simply wouldn't believe how arduous the road can be, both physically and mentally, it can take a toll. My guest today, Kathryn Hummel sees that lifestyle from many perspectives. As the fearless leader of Royalty Records, a national record label as well as her own artist management label: Hummel Entertainment, she wears the industry cap strong. In her seemingly limited spare time, another way Kathryn stays involved in the scene is through her contribution of health and wellness articles to the Unison Benevolent Fund blog on things we as artists can be doing to battle through the demands of the lifestyle. She leads by example, stressing the importance of connecting self-care and professionalism in the industry. 014 "The Rock Doctor's Prescription for Peak Performance"
Yo! This week I took the opportunity to get y'all a little replay of my own webinar from last week with Canadian Musician Magazine. We discussed the key points to ensure peak performance on and off stage including tips for overcoming overstrain injuries, treating food as fuel and incorporating healthy mindset and performance behaviours to really level up your game. Here is the youtube link if you'd like to watch: https://youtu.be/BY2cDiXuSZ8 Here is the link to a bunch of cool free information to help guide you towards a healthier lifestyle amidst the chaos that is life. https://www.therockdr.com/freestuff Here is a brief description of the exercise I did if you're unable to watch the video demonstration because you're negotiating traffic and listening only to the audio version of this podcast: **The Party Trick - Your goal is to get your hands to go from underhand to overhand without actually taking your hands off of the stick. You up for it? Take a drumstick/dowel/broomstick and hold either end with your palms facing up. Make like a bicep curl and bring your right hand up towards your chin while letting your right elbow shoot out to the side, pushing down the drumstick towards your right hip. Your right hand should be awkwardly upside down with your wrist and elbow all twisted up too. There may be some mild discomfort if you're as tight as most people through the shoulder and the wrist.  Now, while your right hand is all awkward down by your hip, take the left hand and do that same maneuver. Bicep curl up towards your chin, flipping the hand down with a push towards the left hip. Feels great, right? Now with your hands upside down and all awkward, just let that stretch out your forearms. See? Your hands are now on top of the stick and you didn't remove your hands the whole time. Great work! It's a lovely pretzel like shape you've put yourself in. For an added bonus point or two, try reversing the move without taking your hands off the stick again. What you're doing is the shoulder spiral.
