Talkin' Masculinity with German Villegas

Talkin' Masculinity with German Villegas

Hey everybody, it’s Garrett.

Today’s episode of The Dudecast is a very special one. A couple of months ago, I put together my list of the best podcasts for men, and The Modern Manhood podcast showed up. I reached out to them via email, chatted a bit, and found myself becoming friends with the host, German Villegas, who you’ll note, I absolutely butcher his name the first time I say it on the show.

What’s great about German, and his show is that he features a wide variety of great people talking about all sorts of things revolving around masculinity which is why it was such an honor for him to be a part of my Dudefluencer Summit a couple of months ago.

If you didn’t get a chance to watch it, don’t worry, I’ve got you covered here with this episode. We talk about modern masculinity, what it means to be a man, and conversations around toxic masculinity. It was super enlightening and I love every chance I get to chat with German, this time being no different.

Understanding the 4 Habits with Jonathan and Andrea Taylor Cummings

Understanding the 4 Habits with Jonathan and Andrea Taylor Cummings

Hello and welcome back to the Dudecast, my name is Garrett, and I am the CEO and Founder of Dudefluencer.com.

A couple of years ago, my wife and I started pre-marital counseling, obviously something went right, we got married still. But during a session, she mentioned this Ted Talk, she said you just need to see this couple, Jonathan and Andrea Taylor Cummings. They’re amazing. So I went online a couple of days later, I googled their names and found their Ted Talk about the 4 Habits. Needless to say, their advice, their Ted Talk was incredible. When I started preparing for my Dudefluencer summit, I just knew I needed to talk to them.

Thankfully, they are as kind and welcoming in person as they are on their website so I’m so lucky to share our conversation about improving your relationships today on the Dudecast. It was really eye opening, so if I were you, I’d get out a pen and paper and start jotting down some notes.

And without further adieu, let’s get onto the show.

How to reinvigorate old friendships with Billy Baker

How to reinvigorate old friendships with Billy Baker

Kerstin Gerst Emerson, an assistant professor at the University of Georgia’s Institute of Gerontology. “In public health, we talk all the time about obesity and smoking and have all these interventions, but not about people who are lonely and socially isolated. There are really tangible, terrible outcomes. Lonely people are dying, they’re less healthy, and they are costing our society more.”

As someone who’s suffered from loneliness, and difficulty in building male friendships, I found myself searching for articles, videos, anything that could help me feel like I was part of a community. Enter Billy Baker, writer and author at The Boston Globe. His 2017 article on male loneliness was life-changing not only to me, but Dudefluencer as a whole.

And that’s why I’m so happy to share my chat with Baker with you today. We talk about his upcoming book We Need to Hang Out: A Memoir on Making Friends, male friendship, and Joey McIntyre meditating in silence. Don’t worry it will all make sense.

Lessons from "Coach Dave"

Lessons from "Coach Dave"

This weekend, I found my new favorite show: Ted Lasso. Never before has a television show displayed so much heart, so much positivity that it inspired me to be a better person. Or in this case, a better person with a mustache.

So for this week’s episode, I reached out to my friend, "Coach Dave," a baseball manager who certainly knows a thing or two about good coaching and leadership. I wanted to chat with him about memorable coaching experiences, and how we can turn those moments into something bigger as role models. I’m excited for you to listen to today’s episode, so without further adieu, let’s get onto the show.

A chat with Justin Birckbichler from a Ballsy Sense of Tumor

A chat with Justin Birckbichler from a Ballsy Sense of Tumor

When I first started Dudefluencer, I searched and searched for men and websites that shared my beliefs in masculinity, and life. One of the first I came across was Justin Birckbichler's A Ballsy Sense of Tumor.

In addition to his work through ABSOT, Justin’s has written over 160 articles, appearing in Cure Magazine, I Had Cancer, The Mighty, The Good Men Project, Stupid Cancer, and more. His work with men’s health awareness has been featured by over 60 different companies and organizations, including British GQ, Livestrong, Healthline, The Mayo Clinic, The Movember Foundation, National Foundation for Cancer Research, and various other groups.

Over the course of our 40 minute chat, there's a lot of laughs, but more importantly, insights into men's health, masculinity, and testicular cancer.

Ethical Underwear with Janson and Drac Wigo

Ethical Underwear with Janson and Drac Wigo

Welcome everyone to another episode of the Dudecast. My name is Garrett Carlson and I hope you’re doing well. With the new year upon us, I’ve been thinking about my goals, and my plans for 2021. Obviously goal #1 is get through the end of this quarantine, and with vaccines coming out earlier this week, it looks like we might be on that path.

But one of my other goals is to be more conscious of how I’m personally affecting the environment. That includes fashion.

More than 60 percent of fabric fibers are now synthetics, derived from fossil fuels.” If those synthetic clothing items are thrown away and dumped into a landfill, they will not decay and instead release methane gas into the environment. Synthetic clothes not dumped into a landfill are thrown into the incinerator, causing more CO2 to be released into the atmosphere.

Fabric dyeing is the second largest polluter of clean water, and the fashion industry as a whole produces 20% of the Earth’s wastewater.

Enter Janson and Drac Wigo, founders of the eco-friendly clothing brand Opok. I reached out to them to chat about the benefits of sustainable clothing, what we can do to help the environment, and why men’s underwear fashion matters.

I learned a lot over these 30 or so minutes about just how dangerous and toxic clothing can be and it’s made me reflect on what clothes I want to put on my body. And maybe it will for you too.

For more information about Opok, visit their website Opok.com
