United In Sisterhood - Detrel's Mission To Empower Female Veterans

Welcome back for another gripping episode of the Female Veterans Podcast. Today, we have a rockstar guest joining us - Detrel, an army veteran and founder of the impactful organization, United in Sisterhood. We're going to dive deep into the joys, challenges, and even fears associated with her military service, discussing everything from boot camp down to the battlefields of Desert Storm. And so much more!

Detrel shares the inspiring story of her fight for compensation as a disabled vet, and we'll get real about the struggles faced in finding suitable therapy within the VA healthcare system. Both of us have quite the tales to tell, so buckle up, grab that cup of coffee, and let's get chatting.

About Detrel

Detrel was born into a family with a deep affinity for aviation as her father, a maker of model planes, always aspired to be in the Air Force. Tragically, her father was robbed of life when she was a mere nine years old. This ignited her own drive to serve in the military, particularly the army, pulling her to the great outdoors which she loved so much. Despite her mother's wishes for her to pursue collegiate education, Detrel found her compromise and joined the army reserves. Through this venture, she paid homage to her departed father, fulfilling the dreams of military service that he was unable to, and forging her own path simultaneously.

Overcoming Deployment: One Woman Veterans Mental Health Journey Through Service, Parenting Betrayal, and Death

Find out why this vet pod is a one of the best podcasts 2023. In today's podcast episode, I am joined by Army veteran, Ami Ritter. As two board members of Hope 4 Veterans we had a lot to chat about that organization later in the episode.  But first, Ami shares her experience in the Army. We discuss gender roles and the male and female differences during active duty. We discussed the patriot missile and her work with the patriots. I learn all about her training what exactly her job with the missile entailed. Ami shares with me her experience being stationed in Korea, and we discuss how important serving was for us. Ami shares her belief that Americans should spend more time serving in their communities even if not being in the military and why it would benefit American society. Ami explains how the entire family is impacted by deployment. She explains to me her reason for leaving active duty, changing her M.O.S. and becoming a reservist - spoiler alert- the reason is common for women. She tells me all about her experience in Iraq and is honest about facing mental health issues. She explains what caused her to get out of the military. She details the traumatic experience that happened to her due to her deployment. We dive deep into the challenges she faced and how hard she advocates for veterans and mental health. This one gets raw and emotional. You don't want to miss it. She gives some awesome advice, too. This is one of the podcasts best. Thank you to the sponsor of this episode Grunt Style! From The Air Force To The Public Health Service And How She Overcame Infertility: Carma's Story

Carma's experience in the Air Force was unique. Especially her field training experience. It completely blew my mind. Carma was already a registered dietician when she entered the military as a fully qualified officer. She shares with me some of the difficulties she witnessed and experienced dealing with very rigid leadership. We discuss the impact of what being property of the United States government can have on your personal life, and what prompted her to leave the Air Force and transfer to the Public Health Service. We also learn about her struggles with infertility and how she navigated this struggle and her career. Then Carma gives some excellent advice for transitioning back to civilian life you do not want to miss! Thank you to the sponsor of this episode Grunt Style! The Limited Series Part 2: Kellie Clelland's Episode - In Partnership With The Military Officer's Association of America

My guest Kellie’s story is a little different than many of my episodes. She served in the Public Health Service, one of the uniformed services of the United States although it is not an armed service. Trained military style and deployed to serve, Kellie shares her experience, both the joys of serving and the difficulties of serving in this branch. Kellie explains her training, how it differs from armed branches and she shares how she was able to make her relationship last while both serving  in the PHS and Coast Guard at different locations.  We go in depth about the difficulties of relocation for military spouses, and how there are often unknown barriers to employment. Kellie shares the benefit of working with the Military Officers Association of America and how critical their support was for her. The Dangers Of Excessive Drinking In The Military - Esaia's Story

The Dangers Of Excessive Drinking In The Military - Esaia's Story

Marine veteran Esaia and I talk about the "drinking culture" that can be part of being in the military. We discuss how many who serve are young and not educated in the dangers of drinking or how to manage alcohol intake in a responsible way. Esaia shares the story of what happened when her drinking got her into trouble early in her career. We discuss what led her to spiral out of control and how rehab saved her. Esaia shares the repercussions of going to rehab on her reputation and what she did to survive it. Warning*** this episode touches on sensitive subject matter. Please keep an open mind. Both of us share stories we've never shared before, and through this process Esaia was able to have a change in perspective about what she experienced and release some negative emotions. Serving in the 1980's - Navy Vet And Ms. Veteran America Finalist Theresa's Story

Serving in the 1980's - Navy Vet And Ms. Veteran America Finalist Theresa's Story

Theresa grew up in a military environment. She knew from a very young age that her future was in the Navy. But what she didn't foresee was that she would be a finalist in Ms. Veteran America! Theresa and I chat about her experiences in the Navy, including her dream of being stationed at the former NAS Miramar. We talk about what is was like serving in 1980, and how she believed (what was then) the recent women's rights movement made changes to the treatment of women but in the military, it had little impact. We discuss how that affected Theresa's military experience. She tells me about her transition out and how she made it go smoothly. Theresa had a long successful career working with real estate mortgages. Now, she is helping interested veterans with transitioning into this career in order to improve their quality of life. In addition to volunteering her services with not for profit veterans groups she tells me all about her experiences with M.s Veteran America and I get all the details on the behind the scenes! From The Coast Guard To The CIA And Now An Author And Comedian - Caroline's Story

Caroline is the author of "Fairly Smooth Operator, My Life Occasionally At The Tip Of A Spear" and her story is an interesting one. As a Coast Guard veteran she shares her experience of being a female in a branch that is still almost entirely male. We share and contrast our experiences serving in the two branches of the military that dominate the water. She speaks of the difficulties of having orders to a small base with poor leadership. She shares how she overcame harassment and her transition out of the military into the CIA. She shares (what she she can) about her time working with the CIA, her transition out of government service, writing her book and getting into comedy. We learn all about how she gives back to the veteran community by teaching comedy through the Armed Services Art Partnership. Special thanks to the sponsor of this episode Grunt Style! "You Can't Let This Stuff Build Up Inside You And You Begin To Hate The World" VR's Story

"You Can't Let This Stuff Build Up Inside You And You Begin To Hate The World" VR's Story

VR Smalls served during the 1980's as a Navy Hospital Corpsman. This is a story that is absolutely heartbreaking to me, as well as inspirational. We talk about how VR decided to end her career after being stationed at a command where the commanding officer seemed to develop a particular type of interest in her career. VR also endured sexual harassment, denial of her pursuit to become an officer and more. Quickly losing morale her conduct deteriorated. We discuss what fears led her to decline re-enlistment as well as her transition out. VR shares how she ended up in New York, and what happened that caused her to abandon her dream of being on Broadway. I learn all about how that career change inadvertently led to her founding her not for profit the Veteran Women's Enterprise Center in Texas. Find out more below. She shares the troubles she faced in her marriage while serving and we dive into the difficulties of her transition back to civilian life. Lani details how she began to turn things around in her life. She explains what she did to heal and help others. We talk about her writing and the podcast and she shares some really great advice. "Can You Just Listen Long Enough To Hear Their Story" Jessica Forms Break Through Therapy To Help Veterans Heal

I had such a great time chatting with Jessica a veteran Marine Corps officer, and expert shooter. We talk about how hard it was for her even to be selected to go to OCS,  and the training including the use of sleep deprivation. We discuss the importance of good leadership and the impact it has. I learn about how physically damaging service was for Jessica, and what caused her to leave active duty. She shares her love of competitive shooting. We dive deep into mental health, how the military diagnoses people with metal disorders they may not have and what led Jessica to build a therapy practice serving veterans after her difficult transition out. “I Didn’t Have A Lot Of Opportunities Where I Could Say I Use My Experience From The Military In Civilian Life” Children's Book Author Olympia's Stor

On this episode, I chat with Olympia an Army veterans doing charity work in Arkansas. We talk about her feelings of frustration regarding being unable to use the skills she learned in the military after transitioning to civilian life.  She shares a favorite story from boot camp and we reminisce about A school in the Navy and  AIT for the Army. We discuss her decision to start a new career as a teacher and what inspired her to write a children’s book, "Kendahl’s Plans." We chat about the importance of journaling and she gives some wonderful advice!  I learn all about her business OJA, and the work Olympia does with the Arkansas Food Bank doing a food drives.

“It Was A Smooth Transition Until I Ran Into A Brick Wall. I Didn’t Sign Up For This” A Very Inspirational Episode With Honor

“It Was A Smooth Transition Until I Ran Into A Brick Wall. I Didn’t Sign Up For This” A Very Inspirational Episode With Honor

Honor thought boot camp was a summer camp. Then active duty happened. After being persuaded by a recruiter to join the Navy instead of going into the Air Force as an officer, Honor faces harsh reality as an undesignated sailor. We talk about Honor's experience, life on ship, multiple assaults and how she gained the strength to heal, share her story and release her pain. I learn about Honor's transition out and all about her travel business. What I wasn't expecting was how this episode became so beautifully inspiring, touching and extremely motivational. If you  are struggling right now you absolutely must listen to this one! And if you love to travel then you have to check out Honor's business Utravel247365.

"These Women Do Exist. They Exist In Our Magazine. They Exist On Your Podcast" The Founders of AVOW Magazine Sheila And Christina

"These Women Do Exist. They Exist In Our Magazine. They Exist On Your Podcast" The Founders of AVOW Magazine Sheila And Christina

This is a BIG episode! A full length double interview with two incredible female veterans. I chat with both the editor in chief and publisher of AVOW Magazine, a publication made by female veterans for female veterans. Much like this podcast. I am so pleased to be featured in the Winter 2020/2021 issue. I speak with Christina and Sheila about each of their active duty stories. I learn about the blatant and open sexual harassment Christina endured as well as how Sheila's difficult transition back to civilian life led her to joining motorcycle clubs. She also shares her experiences as one of very few young women in the American Legion. We go in depth about military programming and the need to deprogram as we transition back to military life. This one goes deep on so many topics! This is a very real, candid conversation between 3 veteran sisters. I was honored and inspired by these two Air Force veterans and the advice they share at the end you do not want to miss!!

"I Never Ventured Or Thought In My Life, I Would Go Up There And Testify." Lucy's Journey From MST Survivor To Female Veteran Activist

"I Never Ventured Or Thought In My Life, I Would Go Up There And Testify." Lucy's Journey From MST Survivor To Female Veteran Activist

In the summer of 2020 Lucy Del Gaudio found herself preparing to testify on Capitol Hill before Congress in the wake of Vanessa Guillen's murder at Fort Hood. We talk about how we learned of Vanessa's story and all the criminal activity taking place at that base. Lucy shares her story of feeling uneasy displaying femininity early in her career and the assault that ultimately derailed her. We talk about her powerful journey to healing and how she became an outspoken advocate for female veterans. We talk about holistic healing, meditation, the importance of voting and the powerful veteran women who organized to support the family of Vanessa Guillen and the Women Veterans March in Washington D.C. last summer.  We learn how to "organize our butterflies," and she gives great advice for our female veteran sisters.

*Since recording this episode, Lucy has parted ways with The Heal Netwerk.
