92. Redefining Financial Freedom with Lizbet of @LizbetTalksMoney

Exciting Announcement! I will be leading a salary negotiation workshop during the Riqueza Reimagined Virtual Summit on April 26th! Join my mailing list and stay tuned for a chance to win one FREE VIP Ticket!

Today’s episode is the second installment in my Financial Literacy Month series. Today’s guest is Lizbet Barajas of @LizbetTalksMoney. In this conversation, we talked about everything from paying off debt, to having way too many credit cars (hi, it’s me. I’m the problem, it’s me), to walking away from a job. Lizbet shares how she uses budgeting as a tool for financial freedom and how actually having a plan for your money is not restrictive but is actually a pathway to that financial freedom. As a career coach, I was personally impressed with how Lizbet levered her budget to make powerful career moves without lowering her standards or giving up her passion to travel.

About today's guest:

Lizbet is a first-gen Mexican-American, mom of two, and money coach for moms. With the use of a budget and her travel hacking skills, she's paid off over $80,000 of debt while still traveling with her family.

91. The Ugly Truth About Doubling Your Salary

91. The Ugly Truth About Doubling Your Salary

This episode is a behind the scenes look at the struggles and insecurities I experienced when I more than doubled my salary in 10 months. I talk about the risk that I took in accepting a short-term contract position and how I was able to use that contract as an opportunity to break into and learn more about the tech sector.

With Financial Literacy Month kicking off this week, I wanted to acknowledge that it’s not always a knowledge gap. Sometimes you have all the information you need, but there might be deeply ingrained fears and limiting beliefs that are preventing you from taking action.

85. Career Lessons from a Marketing Funnel

85. Career Lessons from a Marketing Funnel

This episode is all about the job offer funnel! This is a framework I developed while studying the marketing a sales funnel that takes customers from aware of a product to a loyal customer. In your job search, you are similarly moving random strangers from aware of you and your skills, to loyal managers that are incentivizing you to stay on their team. There are seven steps to this funnel. In this episode I discuss each of them in detail as well as the actions you can take to ensure you are moving not just to the job offer stage, but to a place where you are in a values-aligned role and getting paid top dollar for your skills and experience.

84. Turning Casual Conversations into Job Interviews

84. Turning Casual Conversations into Job Interviews

Job interviews don’t always come after you apply to a job. Sometimes, you may be having a casual conversation, but your story and the way you speak are so captivating, that the person you’re speaking starts thinking about ways they could bring you on to their team. THAT is how you can turn a casual conversation into a job interview. In this episode, I share examples of how to do this. I also talk about the power of owning your greatness and why getting comfortable talking about yourself is the key to advancing your career and increasing your salary.

While there are mistakes many people make in looking for a job, this webinar is NOT about blaming you or making you think it’s your fault. No, as first gen professionals, we were socialized into low-paying jobs and into unsustainable work habits. These are patterns that you have the opportunity to break. 73. Job Hopping Every 15 Months with Janzel Manalansan

In this episode I interview my dear friend and first gen tech baddie Janzel Manalansan. Janzel is an early 30’s Filipino-American eldest daughter of immigrants who has leveraged her network and transferable skills to job hop every 15 months. One of the things I love about Janzel and why I invited her to the show is that she is so genuine in her approach to building relationships with people and so fantastic at advocating for herself. She talks about both of these things on the show as she shares her trajectory from public service to law to tech. She also talks about the importance and benefits of asking other people for help and how to grow your career by talking to people you want to talk to and being in places you want to be in.

About today's guest:

Janzel is an early 30’s Filipino-American eldest daughter of immigrants.  She’s the first in her family to go to college, getting her Political Science - Public Service Bachelors from the University of California Davis in 2014.  She’s always been the kind of person who challenges her paradigms of the world and herself, with a focus on communities, whether leveraging, growing or celebrating them. Janzel originally planned on being an attorney to serve local communities, but after trying out both Big Law and smaller firms she pivoted her career to tech, for financial reasons, better work life balance and to follow her heart to San Francisco where her then long distance boyfriend resided.  She and her husband moved back home to Southern California in the pandemic and enjoy exploring coffee shops with their 3 year old goldendoodle Nova.

67. Doubling my Salary in 12 Months with this Strategy

This episode is going to help you get a new job faster! In 2022, I doubled the salary I had been making just 10 months prior. I did this by job hopping twice in one year. First from higher ed to healthcare, then from healthcare to tech. I reduced the time it took me to get each job offer from over four months to 90 days on the dot. This episode is all about the strategies I used to get each of those job offers, including the one thing that I did that was the most effective and, once implemented, was what made the difference in helping me secure the job offer each time. I also talk about the many, many mistakes I made in my job search the first time, and how I was able to course correct the second time around. Be ready to take notes because I will be dropping so much actionable advice!

Remember, doors are open to my 1:1 coaching program! Inside 1:1 coaching, we will address the mindset issues that come up when you’re trying to get a new job. This is crucial, because you can have the best strategy in the world, but if your mind isn’t on board, you’re not gonna get far. Let’s reach your goals together!

64. Part 2: Getting a Job When you Don't Know Where to Start

This episode follows Getting a Job When You Don't Know Where to Start: Part 1! If you haven't listened to it, definitely check it out. You'll learn how to figure out what you're good at and what jobs pay you to do it.

Part 2 is all about narrowing down your list of potential jobs to the one specific job title you're going to start applying to. This will require you to talk to people who are currently in those jobs.  Ideally, you will be talking to 3-5 people whose work title is the same you are exploring. That means you’re talking to 9-15 people total!

And yes, talking to people can feel scary at first, but I promise it gets easier. Most people (especially those who agree to chat with you) are more than happy to talk about their job.

Here are some questions you can ask during your coffee chats:

  • What are the key skills that someone in this job title would need?
  • What is the career trajectory for this role like? What would be the best place for someone who is pivoting careers to start?
  • What are your favorite parts of this job?
  • What are the most challenging parts of this role?
  • What’s the pay like for someone in this job? Are there bonuses or stock options in this position, company, or industry?
  • What advice do you have for someone like me who is interested in transitioning into this role?

If this feels like a lot of questions, remember that it’s called an informational interview for a reason.
After your conversations, always, always, ALWAYS send a follow up thank you message!
Stay tuned for part 3!

61. Re-release: Why WOC Must Quit Their Low-Paying Nonprofit Jobs

This episode is all about the societal forces that socialize women of color into low-paying careers in the nonprofit, education, and social services sector. I also share why it is urgent for WOC to leave these jobs, which are not only paying near poverty wages, but also have unrealistic workload expectations that harm our physical and mental health. All in the name of "giving back to our community" of course. Because that's the lie we've been fed. This is actually a re-release of one of the top 3 most downloaded episodes on the podcast. If you're new here, I am excited for you to listen to it for the first time! If you've heard this episode before, I strongly encourage you to listen to it again. To be clear, CORPORATE AMERICA IS NOT PERFECT!! But at the very least, it is not pretending that the only way people can give back to their communities is by dedicating their professional careers to exploitative nonprofit jobs. Lastly, this episode addresses the intersectional pay gap. Latina earners were paid just 52 cents for every dollar paid to a non-Hispanic white man in 2022. In this episode, I address what the Latina Pay Gap is and why is it a systemic failure and not the result of any individual shortcoming.

Camila has such deep and beautiful insight about the power of authenticity. Because that’s what’s at the core of a personal brand: authenticity, your voice, your experience, and your power.

We also talked about the ways in which assimilation has caused us collective wounds and the ways in which being authentic can help heal those wounds, and what steps you can take today to develop your personal brand and land your next job.

About today's guest:

Camila Cardozo is a brand strategist and content producer for conscious entrepreneurs and brands.Growing up as a first generation Colombian, code switching and changing her authentic self was her norm. By virtue of being from a different culture, she got very comfortable hiding her true self and compromising her realness for the sake of survival. But hiding her authentic self in all aspects of life was keeping her broke and lonely. When she decided to embrace ALL parts of her humanity, everything else started to click.

58. Interview Like a Pro: 5 No-Fail Prep Moves

58. Interview Like a Pro: 5 No-Fail Prep Moves

This episode is about five steps you can take to prepare for a job interview and builds on last week's episode 57: What to Say in a Job Interview. Because yes, you do need to prepare. No matter how good you are at your job or at the job you're interviewing for, interviewing is a whole different skill set. Trust me when I say that everyone on the hiring committee can tell the difference between a candidate who prepared for the interview vs a candidate who did not prepare. So you have to prepare! Luckily, it is not as daunting as this may seem. Preparing for a job interview is 90% preparing your mind and 10% preparing your strategy. This episode touches on both of these so you can walk in confident, calm, and detached from the outcome.

57. What to Say in A Job Interview

57. What to Say in A Job Interview

In this episode, I walk you through helpful guidelines on what you can say during job interviews as your answer to many common questions. If you get tongue-tied at job interviews or feel like you can't express yourself clearly, this episode is for you. I recorded it based on the answers I got from my IG stories poll where over 60% of responders said this was their main concern during the job interview process. Now, if you're looking for guidance on what to say word-for-word, this episode is not it, and that's because that is NOT how you prepare to do well in a job interviews. Adding the stress of memorizing a script is only going to mentally take you out of the conversation. Because that's what job interviews are: a two-way conversation where you are determining if they're a company you want to invest your time and career in.

Tune in to hear helpful frameworks that will help speak more confidently during job interviews and will help you know what to say when you get asked common interview questions. I also share specific examples of how you can turn a career story that you're proud of into five different job interview answers.

53. The Politics of Wellness with Holistic Health Coach Naihomy Jerez

53. The Politics of Wellness with Holistic Health Coach Naihomy Jerez

Your cultural foods are not the enemy! That is one of the biggest takeaways from this episode with Food and Holistic Heath Coach Naihomy Jerez. We chatted about the politics of food and wellness, how to reject racists diet culture and reclaim the cultural foods that have been vilified, and what small steps each of us can take to live a life rooted in wellness. In addition to Naihomy being a phenomenal human with so much knowledge about women's hormone health, she is also my food and health coach! I share some pretty vulnerable things in this episode that I am revealing on air for the first time.

We also talked about how scarcity can show up and derail our goals, the power of mindset, and how generational healing is part of any holistic wealth journey. It also wouldn’t be a First Gen Coach Podcast episode if I’m not tying it back to systems, so we definitely addressed climate change, white women in corporate America, and farmworker’s rights.

About today's guest:

Naihomy Jerez is a Dominicana from The Bronx, NY and a Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach with a focus on hormone health. Naihomy is passionate about helping high-achieving women of color prevent and reverse disease by building holistic health habits, so they can live their BEST life! Naihomy began her own wellness journey in 2016 after having her second son, and launched her coaching business in 2018 after losing 50 pounds without restrictions and keeping it off. She wanted to teach women in her community that reaching their health goals could be simple and sustainable. Before Naihomy became a full time entrepreneur in 2020, she worked in digital advertising for 12 years. Naihomy is also a speaker and published home cook whose main expertise is flipping recipes. She also specializes in food education, holistic wellness, hormonal health, and living her best life!

49. Prioritizing Yourself as a Working Mom and Content Creator with Book Gal Kelly

49. Prioritizing Yourself as a Working Mom and Content Creator with Book Gal Kelly

My sister is a guest on this episode! Kelly Moreno, also known as @BookGalKelly on TikTok, talks about her journey as a working parent and content creator. After taking a four-year hiatus from her career to focus on her two kids, Kelly returned to the workforce but found herself deeply unfulfilled. She talks about the very important question that helped her leave that initial job and pivot in her career, as well as the decision she's made as a working parent to prioritize her own well-being so she can show up as the best version of herself for her kids. Part of that prioritization was dedicating her time to her hobbies, namely, reading romance novels. It was that hobby that led Kelly to create her TikTok account, @BookGalKelly, where she's amassed thousands of followers in less than eight months. Listen to get the full scoop on the balancing act that is being a full-time working professional, a content creator, and mother and wife.

About today's guest:

Kelly Moreno is a working mom of two and content creator based out of South Florida. She balances her many roles by giving herself grace, not putting too much pressure on herself, and not giving herself more than she can handle. She prioritizes living and enjoying life, focusing on the things that matter, and remembering that slow progress is still progress. 47. Prioritizing First Gen Mental Health with Latina Therapy Daisy Gómez

47. Prioritizing First Gen Mental Health with Latina Therapy Daisy Gómez

Your job affects your mental health! I've said this many times over the last few years, and in this episode, first generation Latina therapist Daisy Gómez expands on how those effects show up and what you can do about it. Daisy, who is a licensed mental health therapist from Chicago, found her own well-being impacted by the heavy toll of direct service work, so she pivoted and found a way to use her skills, serve her community, AND prioritize her own mental health while doing it.

That is the biggest theme of this episode: prioritizing your own mental health. We talked about setting boundaries (my favorite!!!), choosing a therapist, and how your own individual healing journey actually has a ripple effect to those around you and allows them to heal as well! It is such a great conversation!

45. See Yourself in Tech with Latinas in Tech Canada Co-Founder Pegleess Barrios

Today’s guest is Pegleess Barrios, a first gen Latina in Tech based in Ottawa. Pegleess has done some very cool things in her career! She founded the Latine Employee Resource Group (ERG) at Shopify while being in a junior role within the company, she is the co-founder of Latinas in Tech Canada chapter, and she built meaningful relationships that led to advancing in her career. But it wasn’t an easy path. We talked about crying in the bathroom, dealing with being rejected from 13 internal jobs, and how she found strength to keep going.

We also talked about Pegleess’ involvement with Latinas in Tech Canada and the importance of community. Lastly, we talked about how first gens with no tech experience can transition to the tech industry, and whether it’s even still a good time to make this transition, given all the layoffs of the past year.

PLUS: Pegleess shared a really cool way to evaluate a company before we apply to see if it’s worth the risk.

About today's guest:
