__
Today’s episode is another Financial Literacy Month conversation, this time with Money Coach Aqura Nicholson. Earning more money doesn’t automatically mean you know how to manage more money. This is something that both Aqura and I had to learn the hard way. In this episode, we talk about the lessons we have learned in our careers and wealth-building journeys. I share how deciding to buy a home was the catalyst that led to me doubling my salary in 10 months, and why this required an internal shift in how I think about money. Aqura emphasizes the need for intentionality in earning more money and the power of financial independence for our communities. We also discuss the misconceptions around working in tech and the transferable skills that can be leveraged to break into the industry.
About today's guest:
Aqura Nicholson is a money coach empowering part-time and full-time women entrepreneurs to master their money right now, so it will serve them at the next income level. Motivated by her own family’s paycheck to paycheck cycle, it became her mission to break this generational cycle and show other women how they can do the same– even if they have debt, struggle with saving, or tend to be overspenders. Aqura makes money simple, easy, and unrestrictive by helping women to embrace a guilt-free approach to earning, managing, and spending money.

Today’s episode is the second installment in my Financial Literacy Month series. Today’s guest is Lizbet Barajas of @LizbetTalksMoney. Lizbet shares how she uses budgeting as a tool for financial freedom and how actually having a plan for your money is not restrictive but is actually a pathway to that financial freedom. As a career coach, I was personally impressed with how Lizbet levered her budget to make powerful career moves without lowering her standards or giving up her passion to travel.

91. The Ugly Truth About Doubling Your Salary
This episode is a behind the scenes look at the struggles and insecurities I experienced when I more than doubled my salary in 10 months. I talk about the risk that I took in accepting a short-term contract position and how I was able to use that contract as an opportunity to break into and learn more about the tech sector.
With Financial Literacy Month kicking off this week, I wanted to acknowledge that it’s not always a knowledge gap. Sometimes you have all the information you need, but there might be deeply ingrained fears and limiting beliefs that are preventing you from taking action.

77. Grieving the Career You Thought You'd Have
Our careers are deeply personal. Not only do we spend about 40 hours per week in our chosen career, there is usually significant preparation and planning that goes into choosing that career. It’s also normal to envision the type of life you’ll have as you progress in that career.
But careers, like most things in life, rarely go as planned, particularly when you’re a first gen professional who is learning to navigate the workforce without that generational knowledge that many of your colleagues have. That means that plans change. And when a plan that you were deeply excited about changes, it’s normal to grieve.
In this episode, I talk about grieving the career you thought you would have. Even if the new path you’re taking is exciting, it’s normal to feel multiple, often conflicting emotions. You have to hold space for all the emotions, even the ones that aren’t super fun.

In this episode I interview my dear friend and first gen tech baddie Janzel Manalansan. Janzel is an early 30’s Filipino-American eldest daughter of immigrants who has leveraged her network and transferable skills to job hop every 15 months. One of the things I love about Janzel and why I invited her to the show is that she is so genuine in her approach to building relationships with people and so fantastic at advocating for herself. She talks about both of these things on the show as she shares her trajectory from public service to law to tech. She also talks about the importance and benefits of asking other people for help and how to grow your career by talking to people you want to talk to and being in places you want to be in.
About today's guest:
Janzel is an early 30’s Filipino-American eldest daughter of immigrants. She’s the first in her family to go to college, getting her Political Science - Public Service Bachelors from the University of California Davis in 2014. She’s always been the kind of person who challenges her paradigms of the world and herself, with a focus on communities, whether leveraging, growing or celebrating them. Janzel originally planned on being an attorney to serve local communities, but after trying out both Big Law and smaller firms she pivoted her career to tech, for financial reasons, better work life balance and to follow her heart to San Francisco where her then long distance boyfriend resided. 67. Doubling my Salary in 12 Months with this Strategy
This episode is going to help you get a new job faster! In 2022, I doubled the salary I had been making just 10 months prior. I did this by job hopping twice in one year. First from higher ed to healthcare, then from healthcare to tech. I reduced the time it took me to get each job offer from over four months to 90 days on the dot. This episode is all about the strategies I used to get each of those job offers, including the one thing that I did that was the most effective and, once implemented, was what made the difference in helping me secure the job offer each time. I also talk about the many, many mistakes I made in my job search the first time, and how I was able to course correct the second time around. Be ready to take notes because I will be dropping so much actionable advice!
Remember, doors are open to my 1:1 coaching program! Inside 1:1 coaching, we will address the mindset issues that come up when you’re trying to get a new job. This is crucial, because you can have the best strategy in the world, but if your mind isn’t on board, you’re not gonna get far. Let’s reach your goals together!

65. Part 3: Getting a Job When You Don't Know Where to Start
This conversation is all about the third step in this process: picking ONE job title and sticking with it.
A very common mistake that keeps people stuck in jobs they have outgrown is that they are not clear on what job they want to get next, so they waste so much time, energy, and mental effort applying to all different types of results.
THAT IS A RECIPE FOR BURNOUT!!!
By choosing one job title and sticking with it, you will be able to apply to more jobs in less time and you do so while preserving your energy and not letting your job search take over your life.
Remember, doors are open to my 1:1 coaching program! Inside 1:1 coaching, we will address the mindset issues that come up when you’re trying to get a new job. 64. Part 2: Getting a Job When you Don't Know Where to Start
This episode follows Getting a Job When You Don't Know Where to Start: Part 1! If you haven't listened to it, definitely check it out. You'll learn how to figure out what you're good at and what jobs pay you to do it.
Part 2 is all about narrowing down your list of potential jobs to the one specific job title you're going to start applying to. This will require you to talk to people who are currently in those jobs. Ideally, you will be talking to 3-5 people whose work title is the same you are exploring. That means you’re talking to 9-15 people total!
And yes, talking to people can feel scary at first, but I promise it gets easier. Most people (especially those who agree to chat with you) are more than happy to talk about their job.
Here are some questions you can ask during your coffee chats:
- What are the key skills that someone in this job title would need?
- What is the career trajectory for this role like? What would be the best place for someone who is pivoting careers to start?
- What are your favorite parts of this job?
- What are the most challenging parts of this role?
- What’s the pay like for someone in this job? Are there bonuses or stock options in this position, company, or industry?
- What advice do you have for someone like me who is interested in transitioning into this role?
If this feels like a lot of questions, remember that it’s called an informational interview for a reason.
After your conversations, always, always, ALWAYS send a follow up thank you message!
Stay tuned for part 3!

61. Re-release: Why WOC Must Quit Their Low-Paying Nonprofit Jobs
This episode is all about the societal forces that socialize women of color into low-paying careers in the nonprofit, education, and social services sector. I also share why it is urgent for WOC to leave these jobs, which are not only paying near poverty wages, but also have unrealistic workload expectations that harm our physical and mental health. All in the name of "giving back to our community" of course. Because that's the lie we've been fed. This is actually a re-release of one of the top 3 most downloaded episodes on the podcast. If you're new here, I am excited for you to listen to it for the first time! If you've heard this episode before, I strongly encourage you to listen to it again. To be clear, CORPORATE AMERICA IS NOT PERFECT!! But at the very least, it is not pretending that the only way people can give back to their communities is by dedicating their professional careers to exploitative nonprofit jobs. Lastly, this episode addresses the intersectional pay gap. Latina earners were paid just 52 cents for every dollar paid to a non-Hispanic white man in 2022. In this episode, I address what the Latina Pay Gap is and why is it a systemic failure and not the result of any individual shortcoming.

60. Networking is OUT. Building Community is IN.
This episode is all about building community! I talk about how to find your people by putting yourself in places where you yourself want to be, how NOT to be exploitative or annoying, and why I don't think that everyone needs to go to "networking" events. I share how I prepare, because yes, even this super chatty extrovert needs to prepare. Whether that's the overachieving Virgo in me or simply the lingering effects of COVID that caused all of us to be out of practice talking to humans, who knows. But preparation is the key to confidence and to having a great time! Remember, it is NOT about "networking." It is not about transactional interactions that both of you will forget about right away. It is about building community. We are community beings and we need each other!

53. The Politics of Wellness with Holistic Health Coach Naihomy Jerez
Your cultural foods are not the enemy! That is one of the biggest takeaways from this episode with Food and Holistic Heath Coach Naihomy Jerez. We chatted about the politics of food and wellness, how to reject racists diet culture and reclaim the cultural foods that have been vilified, and what small steps each of us can take to live a life rooted in wellness. In addition to Naihomy being a phenomenal human with so much knowledge about women's hormone health, she is also my food and health coach! I share some pretty vulnerable things in this episode that I am revealing on air for the first time.
We also talked about how scarcity can show up and derail our goals, the power of mindset, and how generational healing is part of any holistic wealth journey. It also wouldn’t be a First Gen Coach Podcast episode if I’m not tying it back to systems, so we definitely addressed climate change, white women in corporate America, and farmworker’s rights.
About today's guest:
Naihomy Jerez is a Dominicana from The Bronx, NY and a Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach with a focus on hormone health. Naihomy is passionate about helping high-achieving women of color prevent and reverse disease by building holistic health habits, so they can live their BEST life! I am serving up some tough love in this episode and asking you to do some deep self reflection. I know you care about your community and that you care about your family, whether biological or chosen. But do you think highly of them? Or do you think that you, and you alone, have the responsibility to solve all their problems? Because if you think that the people you care about are helpless without you, then you my friend, have a Savior Complex.
The great news is that once you realize this, you can take steps to change it. Remember, when you heal yourself, you heal your community.

49. Prioritizing Yourself as a Working Mom and Content Creator with Book Gal Kelly
My sister is a guest on this episode! Kelly Moreno, also known as @BookGalKelly on TikTok, talks about her journey as a working parent and content creator. After taking a four-year hiatus from her career to focus on her two kids, Kelly returned to the workforce but found herself deeply unfulfilled. She talks about the very important question that helped her leave that initial job and pivot in her career, as well as the decision she's made as a working parent to prioritize her own well-being so she can show up as the best version of herself for her kids. Part of that prioritization was dedicating her time to her hobbies, namely, reading romance novels. It was that hobby that led Kelly to create her TikTok account, @BookGalKelly, where she's amassed thousands of followers in less than eight months. Listen to get the full scoop on the balancing act that is being a full-time working professional, a content creator, and mother and wife.
About today's guest:
Kelly Moreno is a working mom of two and content creator based out of South Florida. She balances her many roles by giving herself grace, not putting too much pressure on herself, and not giving herself more than she can handle. She prioritizes living and enjoying life, focusing on the things that matter, and remembering that slow progress is still progress. 48. The Myth of a "Good Job"
Is it a "good job" or is simply a way to control the workforce? In this episode, I break down the myth of the "good jobs" because what is usually referred to as a good job (family-sustaining wages, retirement benefits, paid leave, etc.) is actually just the bare minimum. I explain what a vesting schedule is and how employers use it to coerce employees into staying in places where they are not valued; give examples of the twisted dynamic that takes place when people are making deeply personal medical and family decisions based on employer-provided benefits; and spell out a brief history of why this is so commonplace.

47. Prioritizing First Gen Mental Health with Latina Therapy Daisy Gómez
Your job affects your mental health! I've said this many times over the last few years, and in this episode, first generation Latina therapist Daisy Gómez expands on how those effects show up and what you can do about it. Daisy, who is a licensed mental health therapist from Chicago, found her own well-being impacted by the heavy toll of direct service work, so she pivoted and found a way to use her skills, serve her community, AND prioritize her own mental health while doing it.
That is the biggest theme of this episode: prioritizing your own mental health. We talked about setting boundaries (my favorite!!!), choosing a therapist, and how your own individual healing journey actually has a ripple effect to those around you and allows them to heal as well! It is such a great conversation!
