Episode 56: Signs you’re not getting a good night’s sleep and how to improve it. Dr. Leigha Saunders, naturopathic doctor specializing in sleep & hormones

Welcome to episode 56! Today’s episode is centered around something quite elusive to me right now— SLEEP. Naturopathic doctor Dr. Leigha Saunders joins me to share her knowledge and expertise on how to get a good night’s sleep and why it’s vital to our health and wellbeing. She shares all kinds of tips, and even has her own sleep course called the Sleep Fix, which you can take advantage of (special code!) if you love the episode and want to learn more. My husband and I welcomed our first baby just one month ago, and we’re so in love. With a newborn in our home comes very little and broken sleep, so this is a particularly ironic time to be releasing this episode about sleep. Will we ever sleep again? You tell me. :) Enjoy the episode!

In this episode, we talk about:

  • how Dr. Saunders became an ND and why she specializes in sleep
  • why sleep is important to our health + main stages of sleep
  • signs that we’re not getting the rest we need and common sleep hygiene concerns
  • how to fix sleep disturbances + what we can do during the day to improve sleep at night
  • the ideal sleep environment
  • & more

All about Dr. Leigha Saunders: Dr. Leigha Saunders is a naturopathic doctor obsessed with all things sleep. In her waking hours, you can find her on a mission to help other women gain energy, balance their mood, regulate hormones and sleep deep at night - particularly as they navigate hormone changes from PMS to menopause. Her goal is to help women reclaim their rest so they can do what sets their soul on fire during the day. Leigha’s ultimate mission is to help women chase their dreams, not exhaustion! Outside of work, you can find Leigha on her paddle board, under one of her mom’s homemade quilts with a coffee or tea (depending on the time of day, of course!), soaking in her hot tub or playing fire rescue with her son.

All about Brenden:

Brenden first got into health and fitness in college when he started running and fell in love with the way he felt. Soon after he started swimming and then doing yoga, continually searching for more and more of that energy and that feeling of tingly feeling of being alive that exercising delivered. At the same time, he was developing a love for food and cooking and thought for a time about becoming a chef, experimenting with different combinations of ingredients and riffs on traditional recipes. At first these two sides battled, with one looking at food through the lens of "what's healthy? What makes me feel good?" And the other asking, "what's interesting and new and different? What's delicious and takes me on a journey when I eat it, what makes me forget where I am and just escape into pure sensory delight?" Over time, he realized he could combine the two into a career in the natural foods space creating food to fuel active living. Five years ago, he founded Bright Foods with the mission of making it easy and delicious to eat whole, plant-based, nutrient-dense food on the go. Bright Bars are refrigerated protein bars that taste like vegan cookie dough, have an incredibly clean ingredient list, are sweetened with fruits and organic agave nectar, and support a healthy gut and immune system. They're now distributed in Whole Foods, Sprouts, Central Market, Amazon and through the company's website, www.brightfoods.com.

Episode 40: Britta Noble, former studio owner & founder of Social Distance Sweat, on owning a franchise & more

Episode 40: Britta Noble, former studio owner & founder of Social Distance Sweat, on owning a franchise & more

Episode 40 is a fun one because our guest is one of my best friends, Britta Noble. She’s a fitness industry expert, past owner of a Pure Barre studio and now owns and operates Social Distance Sweat. We stay (mostly) on track in this episode, but certainly dive right in—and Britta will tell you the truth! She talks about what it was like owning a Pure Barre studio, the good and bad of owning a franchise, her advice to those who want to own their own gym, how the fitness landscape has changed over the years, giving ourselves grace through our different fitness seasons and more. It’s a great one, guys. Let’s get to it.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Britta’s experience buying a Pure Barre franchise and owning & operating a studio
  • the ins and outs of fitness franchises (the good & the bad)
  • her advice for those wanting to start a gym or buy a franchise
  • how she sold her Pure Barre studio
  • her new outdoor sculpt classes, Social Distance Sweat
  • her thoughts on how fitness has changed and what it might look like going forward
  • her own fitness journey and the idea of giving ourselves grace through our different seasons of life
  • & more

All about Britta:

Britta is a fitness lover, instructor, mom of 2 (and 3/4), wife, and general lover of all things healthy living. As the former owner of Pure Barre Preston Hollow (2014-2018), she has taught thousands of Pure Barre classes and also holds her certification in Yoga Sculpt through Corepower Yoga. Her current fitness endeavor, celebrating its first birthday this Summer, combines elements of barre, yoga, and HIIT in various outdoor East Dallas locations. Dubbed “Social Distance Sweat,” the concept came to life when many were craving the social interaction and external motivation during Covid-induced indoor studio closures; today, it remains with a loyal following as a way to enjoy the great outdoors while getting a great workout - all in 45 minutes.

When not encouraging her classes to sink one inch lower in their squat, Britta enjoys exploring the outdoors with her husband (arguably way more fit than she — three-time Ironman triathlete, ultra-marathoner, and CrossFit fiend) and two kids - Summit and Camilla - all while trying to squeeze in as much travel and adventure as possible before Baby 3 makes her arrival in August.

Episode 35: Daniel Nicholson, CEO of Nada Moo, on the story of the best dairy-free desserts

There’s nothing more exciting than a story about a super successful brand that has truly made it, and began with such small humble beginnings, purely looking for a way to solve a problem for their own family. Nada Moo is the best dairy free dessert out there— if you’ve tried it, you know! Based in Austin, Texas, you can now find Nada Moo at most major grocery stores across the US. In this episode (35), I sat down with Daniel Nicholson, the CEO and President of Nada Moo. He’s been with the company for nearly 15 years, so he has some super cool stories to tell about how the brand grew and also some of the ins and outs of being a dairy free ice cream brand. It’s not as simple as you’d think! Alright let’s dive right in.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • what Nada Moo is and what it’s looked like over the years
  • exciting turning points for the company based in ATX
  • how they make their dairy free ice cream taste so good
  • what regenerative farming is and why it matters to Nada Moo
  • how they got into Whole Foods right off the bat
  • what’s next for Nada Moo
  • & more

All about Daniel Nicholson:

Daniel Nicholson graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 2007 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Soon after, Daniel left for Madrid, Spain, as he was accepted into the Fundacion Consejo Espana-Estados Unidos program. The program landed him with a 9-month job with Iberdrola Renovables, where he enjoyed working in the sustainable energy sector, as he had a desire to be a part of the industries of the future.

When the program was completed, he moved back to Austin and began reconnecting with his friends and his Austin network. It was at this time that he was introduced to a product that would change the trajectory of his life. Daniel discovered NadaMoo!, for himself, in 2008 after an introduction he received to the founder and her CFO business partner. Since immediately falling in love with the product and brand, NadaMoo! has become his sole focus for the past 13+ years. He started as the Controller, and after 3 years of this accounting, operations related work, the founder of the company was ready to step out to pursue other opportunities. In that moment, after much thought and reflection, Daniel decided to step into the role of President & CEO, and he never looked back.

Since 2011, the company has grown its revenue over 50x, from being distributed in just a few hundred stores to now when it is in over 10,000 stores nationwide, and it is beginning to be distributed more widely in Canada. NadaMoo! has been the driving force, for Daniel, to help build awareness around health, wellness, and sustainability. These are the problems he and the NadaMoo! team want to continue to solve.

Hensley worked closely with hundreds of studio owners, most of whom wanted to expand their business success but didn’t have an approach or methodology to deliver predictable results. Having listened to their stories and partnered in their journeys, she developed her own methodology to help boutique fitness studios successfully launch, grow and thrive. She’s packaged her 10 years of knowledge working with three of the most well-known fitness brands, into three 12-week programs, targeted toward the three primary challenges I’ve witnessed studios struggle with. Episode 28: Brandi Marino, founder of BEYOND Studios, on being a pioneer in the fitness industry and how she franchised her business

Welcome to Episode 28! Today’s guest is a fireball of a human, an entrepreneur from head to toe whom I’ve looked up to for over a decade. Her name is Brandi Marino and she’s the founder of a boutique fitness studio franchise called BEYOND Studios, which began here in Dallas. Brandi is the definition of a pioneer in the fitness industry especially in Dallas. She’s real, #unfiltered and has a lot to say. Don’t miss this one!

In this episode, we talk about:

  • how she started BEYOND Pilates and BEYOND500 & what inspired her to do so
  • how she franchised BEYOND and why
  • what it means to franchise vs license your brand
  • owning a fitness studio during the pandemic in California & the most important trait to have to truly weather this storm
  • her thoughts on virtual fitness
  • her predictions for what’s going to happen in the fitness world in 2021
  • what is near and dear to her heart these days
  • & more

All about Brandi:

Brandi has been a pinoneer in the fitness industry for years. Her fitness career started in Los Angeles after leaving the medical industry. She worked for many years at UCLA, USC, and Cedars-Sinai in spine orthopedics. She traded her scrubs for spandex and started training a group of neurosurgeons at Cedars Sinai in Beverly Hills. She then opened BEYOND Studios in Dallas, Texas. The motivation behind BEYOND was finding a way to help people incorporate fitness into their life daily. She founded BEYOND with the idea that traditional fitness needed to be turned upside down. She knew if she could provide ENERGY in a studio, clients would be more likely to BELIEVE it is possible to go beyond their LIMITS and be EMPOWERED to make positive changes in their lives. These four words are what you see every day when you walk into a BEYOND Studio. Brandi franchised BEYOND Studios and now lives in Fresno, California near her family and also opened up a BEYOND Studios and BEYOND500 there as well.

Episode 19: Phillip White, Founder of Phit Clothing, on how he created an inclusive activewear brand and embraced his true self

In Episode 19, I interviewed Phillip White, the founder of a stylish, size-inclusive activewear brand called Phit Clothing.  I met Phillip several years ago at a boutique fitness studio in Dallas, and he quickly became a brand ambassador of my company, StudioHop. I got to hear his idea of Phit Clothing back in the day, and I’m so proud and impressed with what he’s done with the brand now. Phillip opens up about how he had the idea of his clothing company, how he got started and he even tells a story about how a certain huge celeb got to see his bomber jacket. We also talked about his background and how he came to embrace his true self, no filters needed. Finally, we touch on the #BLM movement and how it has affected him and caused him to reflect on his entire life and the experiences he’s had. Phillip was an open book in this episode and was really brave to share his story. He mentioned before that this was his first podcast interview and that he was ready to share. I feel so honored that he felt comfortable sharing his story with us. I learned a lot from him and I know you will too.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • a  story about how he got his bomber jacket in front of a huge celebrity

Episode 18: Alex Snodgrass, Blogger & Author of The Defined Dish. Getting real on how she created a New York Times Bestselling cookbook, vulnerability and more

Episode 18: Alex Snodgrass, Blogger & Author of The Defined Dish. Getting real on how she created a New York Times Bestselling cookbook, vulnerability and more

In Episode 18, I interview Alex Snodgrass, the blogger and NYT Bestselling author of the cookbook The Defined Dish. I’ve met Alex a few times in Dallas running in some of the same entrepreneurial networking circles, and she is so kind, honest and real. I’ve also been cooking recipes from her blog and now cookbook for years and love pretty much everything she’s created. Her specialty is making comfort foods a little healthier without sacrificing flavor (in fact, I think her food is more flavorful than most restaurants).

In this episode, we talk about:

  • where she is during this whole covid mess
  • her real thoughts when she became a NYT bestseller
  • what it was like actually creating a cookbook (logistics and how to start one) you’ll be blown away to hear how quickly she cooked and shot 100 recipes. Mind blown.
  • how she maintains a sense of privacy while being really open
  • one of her biggest fears around being in the spotlight
  • a killer tip for us in the kitchen that will change your game
  • her workout routine
  • a new boozy beverage company she just invested in
  • & more

All about Alex:

Texas native and mother-of-two, Alex Snodgrass, began her blog, The Defined Dish, with her sister, Madison, as a fitness and healthy lifestyle blog back in 2014 where she focused on food while her sister focused on fitness. After her first round of Whole30 in 2015, Alex's relationship with food completely changed and she became a strong advocate of the Whole30 program. Alex has since taken over the blog full time where she provides her loyal community with healthy, mostly Whole30 and Paleo-compliant, recipes while continuing to add her Texas twist with bold flavors and recipes she grew up with. In 2018, she received Saveur Magazine’s Reader’s Choice Award for Most Inspired Weeknight Dinners and was announced a New York Times Bestseller following the release of her highly anticipated first cookbook, The Defined Dish: Whole30 Endorsed, Healthy and Wholesome Weeknight Recipes.

Episode 17: Rachael Phillips, founder of Goga & Yoga, on how and why she started a goat yoga company and her experience on Shark Tank

Episode 17 is an interview with Rachael Phillips, the founder and owner of GOGA & Yoga in Austin, Texas. She’s a California girl who moved to Austin blindly, became an Uber driver, then worked at Home Away, and then naturally opened a goat yoga business. I mean, who doesn’t!? She tells us quite a few crazy stories that you won’t want to miss hearing—the first one is all about her professional experience and how she entered the world of goat yoga. Scrappy and bold are two words I’d use to describe her and her adventure in starting her own fitness business involving farm animals. She embodies the “jumping off the cliff and figuring things out” mentality 100%. Rachael and her now husband and mother-in-law run the business together, and she tell us all about her experience of being on Shark Tank last year. Episode 16: Kami Blease, Trainer & Self-Love Coach, on the internal dialogues we all have and tips on valuing our worthiness over our weight

Get ready to be inspired and to start considering what’s going on inside your head! Episode 16 features guest Kami Blease, a fun, upbeat and uber positive vibin’ trainer and self-love coach residing in Santa Monica, California. Kami is the creator of the Worth More Than Your Weight program and she has a lot to say about those internal dialogues we’re all having about our outward appearances. She tells us how she works with women to make them feel better and have more confidence, dishing out tips on how to actively work on listening to your body and NOT your Instagram feed. We also tackle her true thoughts on diets like keto, paleo and intermittent fasting, and she walks us through a day of typical eats for herself. This is a fun one. Hope you love it!

All about Kami:

Kami is a personal trainer & self-love coach as well as a recovering diet and fitness addict. She’s from Austin, Texas but currently lives in Santa Monica, California where you can see her thriving on her IG here. Kami works with busy professional women with a history of failed diets and fitness routines to change their relationship with food and their bodies for good. This stems from her own personal journey and realizing that weight loss was not going to address the deeper issues of her worth and that she needed to shift the focus internally to live the best life externally. She now uses that experience and knowledge to help women look and feel amazing, have more confidence and energy, and create a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.

Episode 10: Sandy Diaz, founder of Badass ladies of DFW & StudioHop member on How Fitness Helps Her Thrive with MS

Episode 10: Sandy Diaz, founder of Badass ladies of DFW & StudioHop member on How Fitness Helps Her Thrive with MS

Episode 10 is a very inspiring one! I interview Sandy Diaz Haley, who happens to be someone I worked with during a college internship and we reconnected a few years ago. Sandy has always been one of those energetic, hilarious, full-of-life people. Someone who’s fun to be around. Sandy was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2014. Her diagnosis came after years of ignoring strange symptoms that ultimately lead to struggling to walk on her wedding day. Although she has had some major lows, she has come out victorious with this disease. She walks us through what it’s like to have MS, how she was diagnosed and how fitness has helped her manage her symptoms. Today, she is a healthy, active and proud advocate for the disease that once made her think she would never live a normal life again.

Sandy really says it best: “There's so much we can't control in life BUT what we can control is our reaction to the hurdles life throws at us. These life experiences and how we let them impact our lives, make up who we are. MS does not define me, it makes me work harder and for that, I'm beyond grateful.”

Where to find Sandy / Bada$$ Ladies of DFW:

Other resources we mention in this episode:

  • News segment on Fox News about how getting active has really helped her disease outlook and overall health

Episode 9: Brittany Grignon, founder and operating owner of Session Pilates on going from zero to (soon) four studios in 4 years in saturated Dallas

“The hardest thing about growing is relinquishing control. Things are going to happen without you being the first line of defense, so you have to set up the team to be able to handle it. It's all about the systems.”
-Brittany Grignon, founder & operating owner of Session Pilates

In Episode 9, I sit down with Brittany Grignon, founder and operating owner of Session Pilates based in Dallas, Texas. We talk about how exactly she got Session Pilates opened,  how she optimizes revenue and creates high demand with just 15 reformers in each location and a little bit about her marketing plan. Brittany opens up about how she was able to take Session from 1 location to soon 4 locations in 4 years in a place where Pilates studios and boutique fitness is rampant (i.e. lots of competition). Expanding a strong brand and replicating the experience across all locations is not an easy task, and Brittany talks about her tricks and tips on how to do it the right way. You won’t want to miss out on this one!

I give you some tips for how to do this the right way if you’re interested in detoxing, and let you know if I’m going to continue this journey.

A few resources I mention in the podcast:
