On this episode of The Future of Thought, Colton and Caelan discuss their amazement with the nature of time, quantum physics, astrophysics, space-time, the 4th dimension, simulation theory, deities, and much more.

Neither Colton nor Caelan are astrophysicists, quantum physicists, mathematicians, or anything of the like. We admit we likely misspoke in several places or at minimum failed to explain theories fully. Nonetheless, we find conversations around a non-intuitive physical world to be absolutely fascinating.

On this episode of The Future of Thought Colton sits down with Matthew Harvey to discuss free speech in America, the role of social media in our dialogue today, the underappreciation of critical thinking education, the dangers of modern news approaches, debates around climate change, and much more.

Matt is a 5th year PhD Candidate and instructor in Political Science at CU Boulder. His research focuses on the intersection of environmental political theory and critical theory - namely, on the political attentiveness to environmental aesthetics in an era of climate change. (An example: how might we as a political community respond to apocalyptic sights like the skies in the American West during the 2020 fire season?). Outside of academia, he enjoys cooking, hiking, gaming, and other nerdy shenanigans.

Note(s) from the speakers

Colton: At 42:32 my reference to 8 thousand pixels was intended as a reference to 8K, which is in fact about 33 million pixels. On a smartphone the human eye arguably cannot see much more than this. On a larger screen however, this number of pixels would be more distinguishable than on a smartphone.

#4 - Free Speech: The Greatest Freedom?

In this episode of The Future of Thought we discuss the primacy of free speech.

Note(s) from the podcasters

*Caelan does not believe sexuality is only a choice but rather it sounded as such due to mixing “sexuality” with gender expression (discounting gender dysphoria) early in the podcast; He simply views it as an expression of one’s self that is deserving of scrutiny.

The audio is slightly different than usual due to our remote recording during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Discord notifications are audible throughout the episode; this should be fixed for the next episode.

Corrections(Many due to rush caused by sound capture crashing and halting of travel due to coronavirus):

  • As of the time of scheduling our upload, the true number of confirmed US cases is over 120,000 and Global cases is over 700,000 but our message remains the same: balance is important.
  • 6:58: At the time of scheduling our upload, the President of the United States has stated a goal of allowing gatherings again by Easter; he hopes to remove some intra-state travel restrictions by this time. “The pendulum” Colton describes appears to have since swung back, as it were.
  • * - Since the time of scheduling this upload, President Trump has retracted his aim of gathering my Easter, and has extended Federal urgency of social distancing until April 30th, seemingly swinging the “pendulum” back the other direction.
  • 17:11: *Antibody* test(not “antibody” test)
  • 23:00: *Excerpts out of a book of which I read a few chapters (Caelan hadn’t read the whole book (Understanding the Politics of Pandemic Scares))
