#48 Becoming A High Performance Coach with Joe Parish

Joe played professional football through his youth and was quite good at it, until his passion for training in the gym started to hinder his performance. He left, was lucky enough to get a scholarship to study and his passion for training in the gym took him to win some bodybuilding competitions. Taking personal training clients through the same process he was on, eventually let to coaching some of his clients into becoming trainers themselves and started his journey to being "The Coaches Coach". Joe shares some of the challenges and he experienced and lessons learned on the way, in our chat. Nutrition For Performance with Rebecca Haslam | #33

Bec is currently working as a Sports Dietitian at the Hunter Academy Of Sport, and a researcher at Newcastle University. She has also completed a PHD in Human Physiology. We covered a bunch of topics around nutrition for sports and performance, things to watch out for in vegan supplements, sweat testing athletes to find their fluid and electrolytes lost and everything you need to know about fish oil.

Topics covered in the show:

  • Essential Fatty Acids
  • Vegan Supplements
  • How much protein do we need?
  • Are BCAA supplements worth using?
  • Can too much protein have negative effects?
  • Sweat testing athletes
  • Nutrient timing for athletes

Notes:

Essential Fatty Acids

Health Benefits: Better heart and joint health. Reduces inflammation, depression and anxiety. Improves memory and cognition.

Omega 3's - Salmon, herring, mackerel, chia seeds, walnuts

Omega 6's - Sunflower oil, walnuts, pumpkin seeds

Vegan Supplements

Rice + Pea Protein for a more complete amino acid profile

Vegan Fish Oil - Look for EPA and DHA ingredients

Recommended Intake of Supplements**:

Protein - Aim for 0.8-3g protein/kg body weight

Omega-3's - general population aim for 250mg-1000mg/day of combined EPA & DHA, some populations might need up toward 2000-3000mg/day but this is dependent on your health status.

**If you are a competitive athlete, always consult with a Sports Dietitian prior to taking supplements. For the general population, it is also recommended to consult a nutrition professional prior to taking supplements to ensure you do not have any contraindications to particular nutrients.

Mental Health with Rhys Dintino | #16

WARNING - We go deep in this episode. This week I had the pleasure to sit down with a previous guest on the show (#06) Rhys Dintino. We discuss mental health, our experiences with both previously having worked in mostly male dominated workplaces and the lack of communication there. We talk about why mental health is not spoken about among males often enough in general, the challenges young boys face growing up with the current culture that shapes what it means to be "manly" and that showing/talking about feelings is looked at as "feminine" or 'weak". They grow up carrying these belief systems and this transfers down each generation. Follow Rhys' Podcast @connectandrisepodcast on all podcast platforms. Follow the HPP instagram page where you can reach out to me @thehighperformancepath.
Thank you all for listening!

Mindfulness | #15

What even is mindfulness? It has been a taboo topic for ages, but is now recently becoming more accepted and practiced. I wanted to bring some scientific evidence to help explain what is going on when people practice mindfulness. And then give some ideas on how you can start practicing.

Strongman Training and Building Clients Self-Belief Through Strength with Jacob Hodson | #14

Todays guest Jacob, is a gym owner, strongman competitor, has 14 years experience training and over 8 years experience coaching.

We go through his journey of being a shy kid who wanted to lift weights to get better at rugby, to winning the title of 'NSW Strongest Male U90kg'. After discovering sitting on a computer and reading research papers at university wasn't going to be the right path for himself, he decided to follow his passion and open a facility with a mate which has lead to where he is today, competing at the Arnolds, triathlons, podcasting and building a strong community who loves beers, burgers and deadlifts!
