Adaptogenic Coffee & Living Your Values in a Profit-Focused World (Lopa van der Mersch)

Adaptogenic Coffee & Living Your Values in a Profit-Focused World (Lopa van der Mersch)

Episode #95 of The Impactors Podcast features #Impactor Lopa van der Mersch, Founder and CEO of Rasa, a life-changing coffee alternative that leads to less stress, better sleep, and balanced energy, as the adaptogenic coffee alternative revolutionizing people’s relationship to their energy.

Lopa van der Mersch is many things: Ayurvedic practitioner. Mother of two. Sustainability advocate. TEDx speaker. Recovering cult member. Her adventures have taken her around the world in search of health, spiritual fulfillment, and deep energy. 2 Years ago, she added a new chapter to her life story: Founder and CEO of Rasa, the adaptogenic coffee alternatives revolutionizing people’s relationship to their energy.

In 2015, Lopa endured the most stressful year of her life — she left a destructive cult, underwent surgery while pregnant, lost a beloved family member, and had an emergency cesarean birth. Beaten down and exhausted, she needed a sustainable source of energy that could naturally elevate her mood without burnout, crashes, or jitters - and that wouldn’t be as harsh on her already taxed nervous system as coffee.

The problem? What she needed didn’t seem to exist — yet. So, inspired by her newborn child and the wisdom of Ayurveda, she partnered with an herbalist and got to work. After countless failures and “almost-but-not-quite” creations, Rasa was born: adaptogen-rich blends that nourish and revitalize the body while providing enough rich, roasty flavor to convert even the most devoted coffee fanatic. Two years later, what started with a mom elbow-deep in herbs in her kitchen has grown into a full-blown energy movement — exploding with tripledigit yearly growth and garnering a following of tens of thousands around the world.

Disrupting disinfection & getting smart about getting clean (Eli Harris)

Disrupting disinfection & getting smart about getting clean (Eli Harris)

Episode #90 of The Impactors Podcast features #Impactor Eli Harris, President & Co-Founder of R-Zero.

Eli Harris may be young, but don’t underestimate him. Driven by an unwavering work ethic and desire to change the world for the better, he’s worked for leading hi-tech companies around the world and launched two successful startups — all before his 30th birthday. Now as president and co-founder of R- Zero, he’s taking on his most ambitious challenge yet: tackling the transmission of pathogens in the COVID-19 era and beyond.

A Santa Barbara native, Eli moved to Beijing on a Fulbright Scholarship after graduating from Phi Beta Kappa from Amherst College. While his studies in China quickly led to positions at respected tech firms like FLIR Systems and DJI Technology, Eli had bigger plans. In 2016, he co-founded his first startup — a pioneering portable energy storage company called EcoFlow. After a $25M acquisition deal fell through, Eli eventually sold his stake and was left unsure of his next move. Then the pandemic hit.

Sensing an opportunity to save lives while revolutionizing the $20B+ infection prevention industry, he stepped away from his role as CEO at Ecoflow and joined forces with two of his mentors to found R-Zero. Their suite of radically affordable, hospital-grade disinfection solutions immediately made waves and headlines. In less than six months since their founding, they’ve already booked $5M in sales, secured the backing of top venture capital firms, and shipped thousands of life-saving products to small businesses across the country — and if Eli has his way, they’re just getting started.

Compassion & making wiser end-of-life decisions (Dr. Jeff Spiess)

Compassion & making wiser end-of-life decisions (Dr. Jeff Spiess)

Episode #81 of The Impactors Podcast features #SocialImpactor Dr. Jeff Spiess, author of Dying with Ease: A Compassionate Guide for Making Wiser End-of-Life Decisions.

Jeff has spent his medical career with people facing serious illness and death, first as an oncologist, then as a hospice physician. He has lectured extensively and has been recognized as a leader in the field of end-of-life care. He has observed, through extensive clinical experience and innumerable conversations with the dying and those caring for and about them, the burden of unnecessary or avoidable suffering and distress engendered by the American tendency to avoid facing death as an inevitable personal reality. His medical practice and writing are informed by his interest in philosophy and theology, and he finds additional insights in depictions of dying in literature, including sacred texts, music, and popular culture. His writing provides information and inspiration, challenging readers to honestly encounter their own mortality to both die better and live more fully.

Jeff explores our options and considers the possibilities that can impact our final days, By avoiding the topic of death, we increase the pain and grief we experience at the end of life, and impact the suffering of those we leave behind.

Jeff argues that if we honestly face our mortality, we will make wiser decisions, die with less distress, and live the remainder of our lives, whether days or decades, more fully and with less anxiety. Using cultural and religious references alongside poignant narratives, this optimistic work informs, inspires, and challenges our cognitive and emotional understandings of our own lives and deaths.

Dying with Ease contains the practical nuts and bolts information about advance care planning, hospice, palliative care, and ethical and legal issues surrounding dying. Dr. Spiess answers such questions as:

  • How can I plan for the last part of my life?
  • What options do I have if my suffering is unbearable?
  • What do religion and spiritual philosophy have to say about dying?
  • What does it feel like to die?

COVID-19 has made many of us more aware of our own mortality. By putting the fear of our final days to rest, we can make wiser and more authentic decisions throughout the rest of our lives—however long they may be. Death may be inevitable, but fearing the end-of-life is avoidable.

Touching The Jaguar & transforming fears into action (John Perkins)

Episode #67 of Season 2 of The Social Impactors Podcast features #SocialImpactor John Perkins, Chief Economist, New York Times Bestselling Author and an advocate for the Life Economy.

In his newest book Touching the Jaguar, Perkins tells the dramatic story of how, when he was a Peace Corps volunteer, his life was saved by an Amazonian shaman who taught him to “touch the jaguar,” to change his reality by embracing perceptions that transformed fears into positive actions.

Despite that experience, Perkins fell back on what business school had encouraged him to do. He became an economic hit man, convincing developing countries to build huge infrastructure projects that put them in debt to the World Bank and other US-controlled institutions. Although he had been taught this was the best model for economic development, Perkins came to see that this was simply a new form of colonialism.

John and I delve deep on what it means to touch the jaguar, why he stepped away from being an Economic Hitman, and what it means to build a regenerative and Life Economy.

We set the scene during out interview together: plastic waste is understood to contribute to species extinction, ecological devastation, climate change, and human health problems. But despite holding the dubious distinction of being the world's biggest plastic polluter, Coca Cola and other industry giants are actively sabotaging efforts to curb plastic waste.

Raz gives his powerful answers to these questions:

1. Raz, how would you say your experience has been fighting (and winning) the good fight against industry interests bent on protecting their profits at all costs?

2. Businesses are big, hard to change, how do they build a new mission or lead a new juxtaposing industry?

3. As David, in this example, how are you building your business and staying true to your mission?

4. What advice would you give to people listening today, to start making their own impact in the world?
