Episode 49: Operating a Black-Owned Champagne Company with Marvina Robinson

Episode 49: Operating a Black-Owned Champagne Company with Marvina Robinson

Episode 49: This Friday's interview is the 26th installment in the Entrepreneurship and Financial Literacy block of podcasts. It will focus on the theme Operating a Black-Owned Champagne Company. Our guest for this Friday is Marvina Robinson. She is the founder of Stuyvesant Champagne @stuyvesantchampagne.

Growing up, Marvina's love affair with champagne began quite humbly as a college student. She and her friends would often pool their limited funds to purchase a bottle of Moet & Chandon, White Star. They frequented a liquor store on Fulton Street and St. James Place within the neighborhood she was raised. They would do the traditional toast, cheers and proudly sip out of their plastic cups. Although this Bottle of Nostalgia was discontinued, it stoked a love for champagne in Marvina’s heart that would burn brightly until this day.

M. Robinson desired her own brand of champagne to serve as the private house label for her upcoming champagne bar. In order to achieve that goal, she worked with a vineyard in France to create Stuyvesant Champagne. The first tasting of Stuyvesant Champagne was hosted by Suite 607 located in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.  This was the first official tasting in the United States with invited guests. After receiving great feedback from the carefully selected attendees, she was able to confirm the two selections that would become the primary offering of Stuyvesant Champagne; a Rose and a Grand Reserve Brut.

One of M. Robinson's fondest memories of champagne occurred in January of 2019 when she visited the famous Les Deux Magots in Paris, France. She sat outside in the cold, under a heated lamp, chatted with a fellow patron and sipped champagne as they did in the movies.

M. Robinson has a zest for life and travels and hopes to bring a taste of home, spice and culture to the Champagne community.  She is one of the few African American women owning a Champagne brand. Her love for her hometown, Bedford-Stuyvesant (Brooklyn, NY), inspired the name of her brand, Stuyvesant Champagne.

She invites you to raise a glass and toast to the freshness of family and beginnings of a strong and fruitful relationship.

If you would like to purchase a bottle of Stuyvesant Champagne please visit www.stuyvesantchampagne.com.

Her latest series ‘Dear Archives’, stages Black/ Asian British women in colonial settings, and is about assessing how ethnic people feel about being British. ⁣

⁣Art history is a critical subject for her, because she realized not long ago that Black-British artists find themselves underrepresented, and majorly mis-represented in historical portraiture, a genre she has always had a personal admiration for. Episode 34: The Intersection of Personality and Creativity in Starting a Cosmetics Line with Desiray Cooper

This Friday's interview is the 11th installment in the Entrepreneurship and Financial Literacy block of podcasts. It will focus on the theme 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐞. ⁣

⁣Our guest this Friday on @theliberatorspodcast is Desiray Cooper. She is the founder of D'esir Beauty Cosmetics @_beautybydesir_. She created this company to include a wide spectrum of products from cosmetics to make-up and fashion. ⁣

⁣Some might describe Desiray as a jack-of-all-trades on a mission. The owner and operator of D’esir Beauty Cosmetics online store, Cooper has several years of expertise in design and merchandising in beauty/fashion as well as culinary arts. Additionally, she has a background in graphic design, makeup artistry, photography, modeling, and fashion design. While she has found she has a knack for each of these areas, makeup and beauty can be counted high on her list of passionate interests.⁣

⁣The turning point on her road to success was when life threw a curveball and she was diagnosed with autoimmune diseases after years of having an eating disorder triggered by trying to fit the high demand of being thin in the beauty and fashion industry. She often states “you have no idea what a battle is until you have to fight for strength in your own body.” Constant attacks brought on by food allergies and intolerances led her on a journey to a healthy diet and lifestyle. She was embraced by a community of people with the same issues. Through this experience, and her son’s constant eczema outbreaks, Cooper was inspired to develop her own skincare products that are safe for many people who make a conscious decision to live a lifestyle free of the “extra” many companies choose to put in their products. Since launching D’esir Beauty Cosmetics in 2015, she has expanded to include makeup and lashes.⁣

⁣Cooper believes focus and perseverance in your dreams and passions is the key to success. Obstacles will always come; you just have to want it badly enough to keep going when everything tries to get you down. Just get back up and keep going, a tenet she lives out through her journey of healing, and being a mom of a son and daughter, and an entrepreneur. She is currently working on launching her own fashion line and is always looking for ways to improve and grow. ⁣

Dr. Femi Fadahunsi is a graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He went on to graduate for the University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston with a Doctorate of Dental Surgery.

Dr. Femi says, "I chose to become a dentist because I, like many others, was self-conscious about my smile. Dentistry was able to improve the way I felt about myself. The impact that had on my confidence, and all parts of my life, was an experience I wanted to share with others. I am grateful when I am able to make a lasting difference in the lives of my patients. Believe it or not, it means just as much to me as it does to my patients when I see them smile with confidence for the first time in many years, or see them free from pain that has been hindering their day-to-day life. Being a dentist is, at the core, about helping others. Whether I am educating patients about oral health, supporting a person as they get past a very real fear of a procedure, or working with a patient to achieve and/or maintain their ideal smile - I know I'm helping. There is nothing more rewarding than that!"

Episode 26: How to Develop a Profitable Brand using Music? with Maya Angelle

Episode 26: How to Develop a Profitable Brand using Music? with Maya Angelle

This Friday's interview is the 3rd installment in the Entrepreneurship and Financial Literacy block of podcast. It will focus on the theme How to Develop a Profitable Brand Using Music? Our interviewer will share her perspective on creating a lasting and sustainable brand around music.

This Friday's guest on @theliberatorspodcast is Maya Angelle @mayaangellemusic

Louisiana artist, Maya Angelle, combines classic soul influences with the urban contemporary sounds of today. Born in Jefferson Parish, LA., she was raised by a family of singers and musicians who provided early exposure to gospel music, jazz, and funk, which she would go on to blend with her own influences Lauryn Hill, Fantasia, Nas, and J. Cole. She embodies the originality and rich lyricism that is lacking in some of today’s latest contemporary music. Maya has been said to take her creativity within her music very seriously. She says, “I take my time with my music; it has to be something I feel. When I feel it, I know someone else may equally relate.”

A singer/musician since childhood, Maya was active in her church choir before she started making her own music. Her first official EP released in October of 2015 entitled Heart of A Lion, quickly following with the Late Night Sessions EP in May of 2016, both speaking of love and heartbreak. Late 2017, Maya Angelle released her single “The Real Me,” following with her single “Ice Water” in late 2018. In 2019, Maya released three EPs entitled Emotions, Mashed in the Covers, and ART.
